it's a modded strat... granted it's *really* modded, but thats what the vast majority of guitar players do: they take a guitar and modify the shit out of it to their own liking... or if youre Brian May you make your own completely from scratch from an old table top and fireplace

His original white with black stripes guitar- which later became the famous red with black and white stripes- was built by Eddie from spare parts, but the guitar used in this clip was from his Kramer-endorsed line. They built them to his liking, and I believe he painted them. He used to visit their factory in Neptune, N.J. to see them built.

No one was doing the tapping and other crazy things he did. A true master at his art. Like you said. Being from that generation, we love seeing new generations loving what we found to he just normal. Our music. Keep rocking. Oh, his ex wife said his fingers never stopped moving when he slept. Lol. Seen van Halen 4 yrs agp. HE STILL HAS IT

Unreal!!! It's good to hear/see this again. It's been a while. An important thing to mention in this vid is that at 7:34 begins an entirely separate piece of music called "Cathedral" which is actually my favorite piece by him. This man literally changed everything. These types of sounds, which are common place now, were never heard before. Just amazing! There are actually quite a few other pieces touched upon in this live solo, but the two played in their completion are "Eruption" and "Cathedral". Thanks for posting. The 5150 tour, the first with Sammy Hagar, was a big deal back then.

The best comment she makes on watching EVH doing Eruption live is "I didn't know what I was getting myself into". That pretty much sums up the first time I ever heard Eruption even just on tape for the first time. Someone brought it to me at school when I was in JR High and put a set of head phones on me and told me to listen. I was known as the "Guitar guy" in my school at that time. So my friend thought I needed to hear it. I - Couldn't - Believe - my - -ears. How was this even possible? I thought to myself. This is other worldly. Almost like the guy in Back to the Future when MJF put the head phones on his head and let it rip. I was so inspired and just had to get a hold of everything by these guys.

I'm glad the bridge is finally being gapped. Music is the universal language that binds us.
I wanted to share this type of experience with the black culture for over forty years. THEY make us hate each other to feed off of our negative energy.
    Jimi Hendrix got it,
    Bob Marley sought it,
    Living Color brought it,
    Lenny Kravitz taught it.

14:15 THAT is rock and roll, m'girl. They LOVE what they do. In nearly every rock concert there are 3 solos. The lead guitar solo like you've seen here, a drum solo and a Bass solo. Everyone gets to showcase their talent. The piece of music you heard here, Eruption, isn't exactly how it is written. It changes every time Eddie plays it. The base written music is still there, but he always improvises around it. Sometimes I think he doesn't know what he's going to play until he plays it.
2 other great guitarists you should check out are Joe Satriani and Steve Vai

When the music stopped at one point, I screamed out Eddie's name & pointed out that the security guard was keeping all the picks. So, Eddie walks over to the guard, taps him on the shoulder & says, "Give this to that blonde right there." & pointed to me. Got my pick! Then Sammy Hager started picking at Eddie & said that if he was going to start just giving out picks like that, he's gonna have to give everyone a pick! LOVE Eddie, he's just the BEST!

@Mike C no, Queen is not actually Queen without Freddie or John. Freddie was a freak of nature and a god and can't be replaced but I also love Brian May and Roger Taylor and wanted to see them before they are no longer around. And as far as I know autotune wasn't invented until 1989. I am speaking of artists from early 70's and 80's. I mean, I saw Elvis so.....I am talking way back lol

He still plays this. Only he's had 40 years to practice, and his mastery SHOWS! Check it out!
He's still a cutie too. The years have been VERY kind to his appearance. ;)

The technique he is using is called hammer on and pull off. Many other guitarist before Eddie Van Hallen used the same technique but Eddie took it to a whole new level.

Eddie taught himself how to play guitar but also took lessons from country singer and former Beach Boy member Glenn Cambell who was considered a very good guitar player himself.

When asked how long it took for them to gel as a group, David Lee Roth replied, "None. We were all classically trained musicians." - Somehow I don't doubt that.

Thank You for this reaction. I'm glad you liked it. If I may I would suggest that you react to the Van Halen song "Ain't Talking' 'Bout Love" for your next Van Halen Reaction. Also it's best to stay away from Van Halen music recorded between 1985 to 2005, trust me. Unfortunately during the filming of this solo you reacted to; he was very drunk and stoned when this was recorded so this solo is not even his best on RUclips. I have seen Van Halen 12 times in 40 years. I know what I'm talking about. Ed is sober now and the Solo at the Hollywood Bowl in 2015 is the best EVH solo on the net. Eddie's has influence MILLIONS of guitarists from Bedroom Bangers to Stadium Guitar Gods. The first Van Halen album literally SAVED ROCK AND ROLL from Disco and Punk, this is very well documented by many music historians. Eddie's idol was Eric Clapton when Clapton played with the band Cream. Ed's style is oozing with the Blues; Cream Style. Because the Van Halen Family was a poor family, Ed could not afford effects Pedals. He stayed home every evening for many years crafting his style in 6 to 8 hour practice/creation sessions. He learned to create the sounds that the effects stomp boxes made, but organically, without the effect itself. This dedication and determination, combined with the ability to hear details that no-one else can, are instrumental in creating this true Genius. Eddie is self-taught and does not read music. But make no mistake, EVH is the greatest Rock guitarist of all time. He is SO MUCH MORE than Tapping and Tremolo. There is not a more prolific and influential player that has come before or since. Love your take on the new to you music that you react to. I can't stop watching you videos! Please keep them coming!

Thank you for knowing Eddie and talking sense when speaking about him. My opinion is NO ONE compares to Eddie. Elvis started Rock & Roll and Eddie saved it.

Just like at Gazzari's - thinks that "Van" is dude's name. Cute.
The guitar player is Edward Van Halen and Alex Van Halen, his brother, plays drums.
And, yes, when Eddie plays, magic happens. Flapping the springs in the back of the guitar body or plinking the strings above the nut. . . or "Eruption" (the studio version). Or this one.
