homage to the wonderful art of Oscar Howe (1915-1983) Yanktonai Amerindian artist who depicted Native American traditions through a modernist aesthetic painting style. Known to his people as Mazuha Hokshina, or Trader Boy, he elevated himself from illness, poverty and prejudice, to a position of international admiration and respect as an artist and teacher. Born at Joe Creek on the Crow Creek Reservation of South Dakota.

1 Oh Great Spirit,
whose voice I hear in the winds
and whose breath gives life to all things,
listen to me.
Oh Grand Esprit,
May the sun rise in splendor
May the earth appear in light
A wind wears me
Look it is sacred
A rainbow hoop wears me
Morning Sun
A Salish chant to the sun
Morning sun,
come my way
take my pain
down below,
Morning sun,
I thank you
soleil du matin,
Viens à moi
prends ma douleur
jette là en bas,
soleil du matin,
Je te remercie

Oh I am thinking
I am reminded
Of my homeland
A faraway place
My homeland
3 La grande mer
A rompu mes amarres
elle m’entraîne au loin
M’animant d’une joie profonde
L’âme parvient
à la terre des esprits
elle va à la rencontre
de tous ses parents rassemblés
depuis les débuts de l’humanité
Emplis de joie
Ils vivent dans cette si belle contrée
Où s’entremêlent
Lacs, rivières, prairies et forêts
Voici le paradis

5 Il se tenait
sur le côté
du chemin
attendant
que nous passions
pour entrer
dans la nuit
et chanter
sur le sommet
de sa colline.
Ce n'est plus pareil aujourd'hui
pourtant mon coeur chante encore
6 We call to the power of Thunder Beings
We call to the Power of Mother Earth
We call to the Power of East and West
We call to the Power of North and South
Behold, the time has come
The time has come to unite as one
Behold, the time has come
To encircle the Earth with our love.
8 This is the song of the Hills
In the hour when they talk together,
When the alpen glow dies down in the west
and leaves the heavens tender;
In the pure and shadowless hour
When the Mountains talk together
et quitte le ciel tendre;
A l'heure pur et sans ombre
Quand les montagnes se parlent
Sur un chemin de beauté,
vers une vie nouvelle
je marcherai
Dans la beauté je marcherai....
I circle around
the boundaries of the earth
wearing the long winged feathers as I fly
We shall live again
