27:20 - That's what I call a "reset moment" on the real hardware. Of course that's an extra pain through emulation, but on the Amiga or DOS, these are the moments we know we've lost the battle or that it's not worth the time/consequences of raising the dead. So rather than wait to be killed off, or worse to slightly live which causes even more hoops in order to get back to your old save, that it's better to just perform the fingered salutes to reset the machine. control-alt-delete for DOS, shift-commodore-amiga for the Amiga. Faster just to completely reload.
Wonderful review, as always. I got a real kick out of the two Savage Frontier games. I always felt the graphics were at their finest, both on DOS and the Amiga. I enjoyed the outdoor map much more than in most of the games. You're right that you're kind or aimless in this one, but as long as you're going around and mapping it all, I was always fine with the change of tone. I found your hacking experiments to be really interesting, stuff I would have never even thought to try. Cool to know that behind the limits is a mostly functional combat engine that just needs to be told it can cast the spells, or use certain weapons. Thanks for showing this one off!
Thanks Shot97! I'm glad you enjoyed the review. Yeah, I've heard that most people think Treasures of the Savage Frontier fixed many of the issues with Gateway. Too bad SSI didn't make a 3rd one!
On my first playthrough I never found Amanitas and would've agreed with you about the aimlessness back then. However on my second playthrough I did, and if you visit Amanitas in Secomber he will direct you to the each statuette. The game does tell you to do that, actually.
This was a favorite of mine, even more then Death Knights. But I never got to finish it. And there was one gold box game where you we're collecting pieces of some kind of artifact to..
There are so many filler fights in this one. It's the first gold box game I've played so that may be the case for the lot of them. I'm not sure. It's fun though. The fight with the 20ish Zhent soldiers and six manticores has been the worst though. My mages managed to cast spells despite being hit and one shot of manticore spines destroyed all of one of my mage's mirror images. The level cap should've been much higher, since my mages capped at about halfway and cleric level 3 spells are pretty much trash.

Oh wow I remember playing the D&D Gold box games they were great.Wish a remake of them in 3D would be great too.

There is underwater scenario in The Dark Queen of Krynn too, just after the initial dungeon, the place with sea dragons.

Have you played Bard's Tale 1 remastered yet and if so what did you think of it ?
i like a lot ssi serie. got them all on GOG.com. They are like an old version of baldure gate.
