    My local team is the Portland Thorns. One match pre-match, the scoreboard read “THORNS” for the local team. The visiting team, instead of their name, had the Old English/Old Norse character “þ”. I commented “wait, the Thorns are playing against themselves?”
    Very few people got it. Those that did really appreciated it.

    My brain really *really* wanted 1,101 to be binary for something... I had the right idea (different number system) but Roman Numerals never would have occurred to me.

      Yeah, I started by thinking 1101 was binary for 13 and maybe for luck reasons they put it in binary.

      That's interesting. I never thought of the name Liv as a roman numeral because they're normally all upper case. I also don't really look for roman numerals where they're not expected. As one might do.

    Finally one I got immediately!! Not a football fan at all, but I went to Roman numerals straight from the gate. Liverpool was obvious, but I had to guess Manchester City because I couldn’t think of anything better for MCI. It is a bastard of a question, but sometimes you just luck into the right thought path…

    This is the second time I watched the episode and now i groaned.
    I thought the numbers actually had been spelled out as as scores and it was the TV/Stadium people that made a funny "haha".
    No, it was the question writer that read it like that.

    I'm going to echo others and say that until that last sentence I also thought it was some kind of joke that was actually being put on the scoreboard intentionally to be nerdy, but that last sentence suddenly reveals it to be a perfectly normal scorbeoard display and it was just how Sergei chose to interpret LIV - MCI.

    If I understand correctly, the scoreboard does NOT ever have the actual characters "5" and "4", right? It has "LIV", which is fifty-four written with Roman numerals instead of in decimal notation. The _spoken_ question is therefore perfectly accurate (although the text at the start of the YT video is questionable).

      Oh yeah! I thought the scoreboard-managing people were having fun and set the scoreboard to LIV 54 / MCI 1101 as a nerdy joke, but no, it's just the fact that LIV and MCI are displayed... That makes more sense now.

      Some clubs do have numbers in their abbreviation, just mostly not in England. For example Schalke 04 (S04) or Mainz 05 (M05) in Germany

    Why did Brad Pitt's name appear on a US college basketball game broadcast that he had nothing to do with? It turns out that the scroll line was listing upcoming games, and was using 4 letter abbreviations for the schools. Bradley University was playing Pittsburgh University.

    Tom literally gave them the answer at 5:50 (I did not know this before, but I got it instantly when he said that)... and I was so frustrated that they were not getting it when he gave them the answer

      Yeah, I was real confused until Tom's very last sentence where he says the question editor just saw "LIV-MCI" on TV and thought of Roman numerals. Up until then I still thought it just said the Arabic numerals on screen _and_ LIV-MCI and I couldn't wrap my head around it.

    Interestingly there isn't a common set of 3-letter acronyms for teams - Arsenal for example can be rendered as both ARL and ARS depending on how prudish the broadcaster is. Man Utd also tends to be rendered as MU on Sky

      The national and international federations do have a shared set of official codes though, meaning Man City will be MCI whether in the Prem, UCL or Club World Cup

    No, but the scoreboard doesn't read as the numbers, then. The question said 'the scoreboard already indicates 54 and 1101' not 'the numbers 54 and 1101 are already up', so that's not right, as that says that those are in numeric form at that moment

    My hypothesis hearing the question: the score board is showing LIV and MCI because they're abbreviations for the teams' names or something along those lines, which is 54 and 1101 in Roman numerals.

    Watching on TV, ahh... For one peculiar reason, if you're familiar with NBC Sports' Premier League Coverage, this won't work in the U.S. The 54 is stable. But the other number is off by one. This is specific to the games shown on TV with NBC Sports' own presentation. And considering the teams involved, you're pretty well assured of seeing it on TV!

      The numbers are just the Roman numerals "LIV MCI" though, not the Arabic numerals. So the screen just said "LIV 0:0 MCI".

      Id would have been much better, if the person responsible for the board wrote 54 and 1101 on the board as an inside joke. That's my point :)
