You didn't mention the controversy over the novel the "Helmsman" making the finalist list for best novel in the 80's. There were fifty sequentially numbered money orders for Worldcon memberships with Hugo ballots enclosed.
The list of Hugo and Nebula award winners is such a wonderful jump-off point to get into good series and authors. I love getting into the science fiction of the past and feeling the societal context color the way stories play out. I think that great science fiction always explores some new concept or even a common one in detail to really feel out the implications of it. Like how The Forever War explores the implications of Relativity in an interstellar war.
As a matter of fact I do know something about the Hugo Awards...I attended 12 of the last 30 Worldcons. You gave a very good overview of the award process, it is very complicated until you participate a few times. If I had found your channel sooner I would have looked for you at Chicon.
Conventions are fun but even more fun when you have a few friends to hand out with. I was by myself at Chicon but did get to meet several BookTubers. I'm not going to China next year but maybe Nasfic in Winnipeg. When Worldcon is overseas they have a smaller con in North America.
I've seen the labels on some books and have been curious about the Hugo awards. This was a great video explaining it and some problems with it. It's a shame people have tried to cheat the system but it sounds like it held up good. It's nice that the fans have a say but I imagine it's hard to keep up and read all of the nominations. Thanks for the explanation
A good primer on the subject. A couple of small corrections/additions. Best Series requires the latest work in the series to be published in the time frame - not the last, witness the wins for Murderbot and Wayward Children, both of which I personally was happy about not just because they are great series but because they are series and not trilogies. Controversies: As you say there are many of these over the years. The First big controversy was the banning of the Futurians in the late 50s (IIRC) Was not aware of the Scientologists push for L Ron. There biggest problem was that Battlefield Earth is a STRONG contender for worst SF novel ever published. Sad Puppies was quite a complex affair as is well covered by Camestros Felapteron in his Debarkle blogs (which were nominated for Best Related Work) I agree with you on the difficulties of judging many of the non prose and drama categories. How does the average fan judge the value/worth/competence of and editor? Some of the other categories also either need a shakeup or to be 'rested' due to eligibility criteria or lack of competition, or interest. I realise that as fan based awards the Hugos are as much about recognising the fans as the pros. The Interactive category is one that probably needs to be added permanently not just because of the popularity of the category, but to help attract a younger audience for Worldcon.
WOW! You know so much, too bad I didn't have you consulting before I finished the video :) And I'm glad to hear others struggle with the categories too. The idea of "resting' one is very interesting.
@@secretsauceofstorycraft That’s the thing though, I am a Publisher and after perusing their site, there doesn’t appear to be a clear link to nominate. I was able to nominate for the Hugo award for the first time this year! That’s got me excited!
When I was a teen, I initially thought that the awards were named after Victor Hugo. :D
I had no idea either, until I did this video

I'm glad I found your site, very informative.
I DIDN'T know! This was very informative! Thank-you 🌌🚀
Glad it was helpful!
Very interesting video. I see the Hugo Awards will be in Glasgow 2024 so I will be trying to go to that one for the first time.

Great job on this explanation. You have a fun and enthusiastic energy that definitely brightens my mood.
Wonderful to hear! Thanks for saying so.
Thank you for clarifying this for me.
Anytime
It was *G.R.R.Martin* who said "The Hugo's response to the Sad Puppies proved them right."
Think about that.

And history repeats itself in 2024.
As Larry Correia just wrote, thar schadenfreude tastes lile ice cream.

Used to be the premiere award.
Yeah it did
Still unclear on where publishers can nominate for nebula award.
Publishers know. They pretty much provide copies of a few of the books they want to the judges as I understand it.

"Fans" ie rich north americans and europeans. I am.a fan, I cant pay that
It is a sad reality and its not helping them much
Still a shame that project hail Mary did not win. I have read the winning book and it was not as good, I forgot the name of it, by maritine.
I agree….
