Great video! It's nice to have Adrian's perspectives mixed in! I read Elder Race just recently, thought it was great. Not read any of the others, but I have the Terrible Worlds Revolutions omnibus on my bookshelf, and following this video I feel compelled to bump it up my TBR list.

I'm very glad for this. I admittedly have been enticed to read some of Tchaikovsky's work, but have been having a difficult time in selection. I generally hate series novels, so that's a limiting factor, but more importantly, I'm somewhat concerned about how many books he's written in such a short time span. That kind of output usually indicates poor quality, so...

Im happy to say Tchaikovsky is def not low quality IMO. However, his novellas are fun to start with. If you decide you dont know where else to start and want to read his best-- pickup Children of Time. You van read it as a stand alone.

@@secretsauceofstorycraft Thanks for that. If forced, I'd say PKD is my alltime favourite SciFi author so, as you say regarding the variability of Tchaikovsky's work, hopefully I'll find something that hits for me. Cheers.

I really enjoyed this, Whitney. I love the interview questions and it's great to get AT's take on his own work. I agree that he's incredibly versatile and very creative, both with story ideas and ways of telling them. Some might not land but there's a lot of hits and I love that he takes chances and tries new things. My taste is pretty much in line with yours. Ogres is probably my fave, but I really enjoyed Elder Race and all the Terrible World books. I think Walking to Aldebaran was a Beowulf reimagining. I've not heard of Saturation Point, Made Things or any of Abaddon books, so thanks fro bringing them to my attention. I also like Adrian as an audiobook narrator. I was put off the Expert System books because of the narrator and wish AT had narrated them. Great video! I love Tchaikovsky. I'd love videos on single authors tracing their arc. Our reading biases are very similar though I am not a fantasy fan. Loved the novella review. I've started to notice a repetition of tropes - class, evil corporations, dying world, climate change, etc. Probably inevitable for writers. There are so many climate change books that our local mall bookstore has an entire section. Note: Changing history via time travel was solved by Kage Baker (I've written about her "Company" series) by dedicating a unit to search for recorded history (which cannot be changed).

    • @Yesica1993

Greta list Whitney. I will be interested to see what you think of Eversion as I think its a very clever book. It starts like a historical novel, then jumps into other genre's including steampunk, before brining everything back to a great SF read where all the previous bits make sense. Very clever. And may I suggest you add Bob Shaw to your list of English authors. Often overlooked, but he has written some classic SF novels along the lines of 'if I changed one thing how would that impact our society'. Try Vertigo which is a great example and a quick read. Happy 2025.

David Drake's Redliners, Starliner, Seas of Venus, Northworld* Sea Hag** are stand alones you might like. Redliners: burned-out company of strike troopers sent as security detail for a colony where the colonists were drafted by address not skills and it all goes wrong at landing. Starliner: War is breaking out and the MC, newly assigned 3rd officer of largest cruise ship, has to help save the ship from being captured to be used as troop transport. oh, almost forgot: David Weber's Mutineers Moon. * Northworld, hard case police officer elevated to godhood while on a mission to a warring planet. ** Sea Hag is slightly more on the Fantasy side but it's basic premise is military vets killing a monster to save lives.

Can I add one comment? I I came across a section of women writers in my library and was stunned they are so obscure. Pamela Sargent - Seed Trilogy, "Venus" trilogy (predates Stanley's Mars) & more. Kage Baker - Her Company time travel series is the best - 8 books, literary, captivating, exciting, romance and world building. Patricia Anthony - unusual First Contact. Brother Termite (aliens run the govt but to what purpose? - James Cameron has the movie rights), Cold Allies (aliens come during WW3), Happy Policeman (the world ends except Coomey, TX - inspired the Dome), God's Fires (aliens crash in Portugal during the Inquisition, finally (Yeah!) Sheri Tepper (sci-fi, ecology, mystery) Thanks!
