Lord Valentine's Castle has been on my shelf for 40 years and I haven't got around to reading it yet. House of Suns was great, but I think I like the Revelation Space series more.
House of Suns was one of my introductions to Space Opera and it blew me away. One of, if not my favorite (i need to re read it as its been awhile). I think it has the character exploration your hoping for. As for Neal Asher, his Polity stuff is a great mix of Space Opera, Military SF and Cyberpunk. And the Cormac books have a great character arc where the main character learns a lot about his world and himself over time. Great video and suggestions!
Thank you for watching! Ah man I'm so excited about all of those suggested books, and I can't wait to jump in! Thank you for inspiring in no small part this video, your channel (and your library) are amazing 🤩
Terminal City by Reynolds. A bit of EVERYTHING. House of Suns, a favorite. Also Against A Dark Background and The Algabraist by our lamented late Iain Banks and Eon and Eternity by our equally lamented Greg Bear.
Great list. I read House of Suns, which I enjoyed quite a while ago. I thought I read Lord Valentine's Castle, but I don't see it marked as read in my list. Your description of it sounded like something familiar to me. I've been wanting to try the Honor Harrington series, but haven't gotten around to it yet. My favorite space opera series that I've read so far is the Vorkosigan saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. Those books were a lot of fun.
Thank you for watching Staci! I have only read the two prequels to the Miles Vorcosigan saga, the books focusing on his parents. They were absolutely AWESOME and I think Bujold is a real genius 🔥🔥🔥
Anyone that cuts a video on top Space Opera that fails to put E.E. Smith's Lensmen series at the top is a poseur. Smith _invented_ Space Opera, and NO ONE has done it better than him (try as some might, with Yoshiki Tanaka being the best one going with _Legend of the Galactic Heroes)_ even with the advantages of being feature films, long-running prestige television, comic adaptations by master comic authors and artists, audio dramas, etc. Because Smith, in the Lensman series, _invented the modern day Combat Information Center_ used by modern navies worldwide. No successor has any anything like that level of influence.
This video is not a ranking or even a dissertation on the intrinsic value of space opera books, so I really don't understand where did you get that idea. I asked for reading suggestions by giving specific parameters and mentioned the results. That is all. I don't like the tone of your comment, honestly. I implore you to keep such vitriolic, and completely unwarranted, takes away from this community.
The Gap Cycle by Stephen R. Donaldson that’s my favourite. Good video man
I was reading about it just yesterday! I should absolutely check it out, Thank you for watching! 😀

Wow 40 years? 😁 I'll try to read (or listen to it) during the spring. I have to read Revelation Space then. And thank you for watching 😊
