Zion is probably one of my favourite fallout experiences, easy. The location, characters, story, lore (man in the caves) and just, history of the national park and it’s mix of early post war to modern day post war make the park a great vacation from the Mojave.
@@giovannicervantes2053 It is nice to see how many people are inspired to go to Zion after playing the DLC. As someone who has been there a couple times before myself, I have to say that despite how hard they tried in this DLC, there is only so much you can do to try and capture even a fraction of the beauty of Zions National Park in a 2010 game engine, seeing it with your own eyes is another experience all together
I don't understand why the fans didn't generally like this DLC. Post-apocalyptic tribal villages was one of the cooler new additions to the lore in Fallout 2 and I was so happy that it was revisited.
Personally I wasn't a fan of some of the story twists at the start of the DLC like having the caravan you came in with all die or dealing with boring discount native Americans over seeing a society based on a prewar religion only for it to actually be destroyed. Also the DLC had way too much go to X location to collect objects Y and Z. which was something I felt New Vegas tried to avoid in quests due to how uninteresting it is. The DLC also feels really short and perhaps rushes you from one objective to the next without giving you time to explore properly (also only 1 vendor and no storage area made it hard to keep all the items you wanted, at least for me). But despite the paragraph of grievances I have with the DLC, I think it still is a solid experience overall. It had some neat quests and very interesting characters and stories like with Joshua Graham and the Survivalist. Like all DLCs you had some items and perks to play around with as well. Also considering it wasn't constantly slogged down with tedious mechanics like Dead Money was, it is already better than that DLC in my book
and the area is so damn pretty, I remember having my jaw drop when after playing most of the game finally seeing a color other than brown(in an era of gaming were most of the color pallet was brown)
It had no content. As soon as you arrive and meet the tribes you're on the final quest to decide whether to fight or flee. Textbook example of wasting a perfectly good plot, setting, and characters. It could have been so much more
@@Abysia yeah. Theres a bunch of side content, but with a limited number of NPCs it made it difficult, especially when they were blowing memory on the caravan group thats meant to die immediately.
I remember as a kid trying honest hearts and being confused why everyone in the dlc was hostile. I talked with a friend of mine at school and he told me the same problem. Neither of us new we had accidentally attacked Follows-Chalk
I remember doing that with Waking Cloud. I think as a kid, seeing a half naked bald woman running at you with a bear gauntlet is a little intimidating.
I feel like everyone's first experience with Honest Hearts is murdering Follows-Chalk, thinking he was also an enemy, being told to grab a map, doing so, and then going "what the fuck?" when the ending scenes play
@@nickhard7615 Pretty accurate. When I first played Honest Hearts I was shooting at the white leg on the cliff, and I probably tagged Follows Chalk by accident in the confusion. I only knew I had made a mistake when I saw he was named character. I rightly assumed he was supposed to be important, then reloaded a save.
The more cut content being documented, makes me wish for a total remake using the cut content and cut multiple choices. I wouldn’t care how long it takes, this game deserves more.
The story of the Survivalist for me, is my favorite bit of lore in the entire Fallout universe. It encompasses, for me, almost in it's entirety, the bitter reality of what surviving in a post-apocalyptic world would be like. Losing everything, but just trying to hang onto anything good you had left.
That comment about the Survivalist logs pushing players to support Joshua is such a big one. Every time I play Honest Hearts, I usually think, "OK, we'll do this the less brutal way this time," but every time I read the Survivalist logs I feel a massive amount of fury towards the White Legs. It would be too disrespectful towards Randall Clark to just let Zion be overrun by those who only wish to plunder.
There's a time for peace, love, and prosperity, and there's a time to stand your damn ground. The Sorrows deserve to have a home. The White Legs and the Dead Horses can waltz back wherever they came from, but the Sorrows only have Zion Valley. I'd rather for them to lose innocence than to lose their dignity.
In my current play through of Honest Hearts. I was clearing out a White Legs camp for that quest to stop them from planting traps. And I went into vats. Saw the last one had a service rifle, was a little suspicious. Killed him, saw it was The Survivalist’s Rifle. I then decided to kill them all and keep Salt-Upon-Wounds alive for the best ending.
Everytime I think about this DLC. I wonder why they attached those weird quests to Joshua Graham and the tribes when the main story is clearly Randall Dean Clarkes. God what a masterfully written character.
Using console commands, I respawned Ricky back into Happy Trails after telling him to leave. Another caravan guard is spawned and dies in his place during the ambush. Because of this, Ricky survived my ambush and with a console command to make NPCs follow you like companions; I was able to bring Ricky with me through the whole DLC. It took some save-scumming to keep him alive, but I was glad of Dead-Eye's company in Zion!
I actually really liked Joshua's introduction. He doesn't need to prove he's a badass and doesn't care if the Courier thinks he is one. He has a job to do, and the courier can either help or get out of the way. This sets him apart from the more theatrical Caesar and Lanius, who need to go out of their way to cultivate the authority Joshua naturally exudes. The scene also emphasizes his more utilitarian attitude vs Daniels's idealism.
I really enjoyed the serious view on religion they took in this dlc. As he said most games just use it as the butt of a joke or dismiss it outright, which I think is lazy.. It's central to the story of virtually every culture in human history, why can't it be examined honestly the same way politics can be.
I did legit kill Follows Chalk on my first time playing Honest Hearts. Obviously I reloaded... who the heck would be confused and think that Chaos in Zion is the whole DLC!? XD
All of this really makes me wish that New Vegas gets completely remade one day with all of the stuff cut from the dlc and base game restored, and the dlc load order shenanigans fixed
Obsidian has released so many bangers since New Vegas, not sure where the sentiment comes from that they're not the same. Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny and Pentiment are some of the best RPGs of the past decade.
Honest Hearts Makes FNV for me. I appreciate how they portrayed the New Cannanites as a whole. Usually anything involving my Religion in media ends in the butt end of a joke. Who ever wrote the script did a bang up job. Showed how human everyone is and how we can all fall. Keep up the good work Triangle City
@@hyndquart5241 oh no, the reddit warrior has mean words to say to me. tbh idgaf about anything a 6 year old account with 10 subs says, especially if they're still uploading from their playstation.
I don’t have enough words to thank you for what you've done for Fallout New Vegas, a game I hold very close to my heart, in all these years. Your research, mod work, datamining, editing, narrating, everything is phenomenal. ❤️
I honestly like HH the best out of any of the DLC's. It doesn't overstay it's welcome like some of the other DLCs, and it's genuinely the most fun area to explore in the game for me.
The religious context involved is super interesting. Personally I find religion to still hold value when you get down to its root instead of listening to everyone shouting about it. So when I had to choose between Joshua and Daniel, I still chose Joshua. Despite understanding Daniel and his views. I found daniels views to be too hopeful and unrealistic when it came to the fallout world. The tribes stayed innocent like they were, because they were isolated in Zion, moving them would’ve resulted in the same problem later on, or simply caused more problems for the tribes. I also didn’t like the idea of giving up their home because they were pressured. Joshua’s views in my eyes while being more wrath than peace, was more of a result in my eyes. They kept their home, got rid of the threat, they may have lost their innocence. But in time, while staying in that environment, they’d eventually regain it. But in my eyes it’s still something they needed to do to survive
I can't side with Daniel because he's naive, you can't run forever and at some point you have to stand and fight. Might as well do it while you have tactical advantage at the time as well.
Hearing Joshua Sawyer's thoughts on the religiousness and religiosity between Joshua Graham and Daniel was interesting. As someone who is a lay theologian with a background in Christian theology (even though I don't personally consider Mormonism to be a branch of Christianity), I enjoy hearing about how religion inspired the dichotomous choice between Graham and Daniel. Sawyer stated that a player who doesn't share Daniel's worldview, i.e. the value of nonviolence and innocence, will typically not side with him. However, as a Protestant fundamentalist who understands the theological and spiritual significance of forgiveness and innocence, I too side with Graham rather than Daniel. The Dead Horses and the Sorrows have a biblically ordained right to defend their homeland and protect their tribes. Daniel's plan to evacuate Zion Canyon doesn't solve the problem; it simply prolongs it.
I really could never side with Daniel after I tried it once, once I learned they would salt the earth of Zion and reading the survivalists logs I just feel that Daniel has no right to remove them. Zion, even though it's dangerous, is one of the last pieces of beauty in the Fallout universe, destroying it is not an thing I want to happen
Being Catholic, I'm of the belief that Graham is entirely in the right, and I would argue that compelling Graham to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds is also the correct way to go.
@@seydasneed Spoilers ahead yeah, a few people have basically said that its the right thing to do anyway, the reason being that if you pay attention the dialogue joshua has a strong belief in self defense and mercy. Basically you're keeping joshuas beliefs in mind when you spare salt apon wounds and I mean its not like the 80s dont murder him anyway lol
I really wish New Canaan was a location you could visit in this DLC how its talked about by Jed and the almost legendary status it is given as a thriving community in the heart of an otherwise chaotic land filled with warlords raiders and tribal gangs was really intriguing to me
I love honest hearts. All the other DLCs are so dark and oppressive. Not that HH didn't have dark themes in it (far from it). I just think the environment is beautiful and fun to explore.
First time playing it, I thought we would stay with the Happy Trails caravan NPCs but they die on the first encounter with the White Legs. Lee, rest in p-... I mean, Jed, rest in peace.
I don't get the complaints about Joshua being disappointing. Some of the biggest badasses in history are basically normal people who did extraordinary things and then went back to being normal people. Honest Hearts was a very grounded DLC and felt that way when I went into it. Nothing ridiculous like a midnight science fiction feature, just people being people
It is absolutely CRIMINAL how underrated this channel is. I watched every second of this. Thank you for the awesome content and all of the effort you put into it!
I fell in love with this game, and played it for at least 200 hours. Did every ending possible, and loved it. Put the game down for a bit, then played it again after all the DLC came out. Holy shit, meeting "The Burned Man" for the first time was so cool.
Really telling how great a game can be when people are talking about it 10 years later. I mean, just the number 62 episode of this series speaks volumes about this.
I always loved Honest Hearts, but this video gave me an even greater appreciation of it. I watched The Mission in a college history class and it truly is a fantastic film; in hindsight I can see how much it parallels and inspired HH.
I remember asking Sawyer about this dlc during one of his streams and if they had to cut a lot of stuff out of Zion, he said not particularly. They did what they wanted to do with it.
This was the first DLC I remember spending a lot of time in cause my character wasn't too weak at the time and it was a birthday gift along with the rest of the DLC 2013 was a hell of a time that I miss to this day
2012/2013 were the years I first played this game. I bought the game summer 2012 and I swear this was the only game I played for the next year. I replayed it multiple times to understand the whole story from each side and I still think about those days all the time. Such a good time in life
It would of been interesting having a choice at the beginning of which of the caravan team you could save, having them as a companion, with your choice of them bringing variation/difference on side missions and outcomes due to their personalities
Imagine the cut weapon bug spray having a unique version that you could craft and you would use Benny's light and maybe some unique limited edition bug spray in the map or something.
This is honestly the one dlc I gladly play with every new character I play, the world space, the weapons and outfits, the characters, its honestly such a good DLC and it makes me sad seeing how much more love they had to add to it
I was very underwhelmed by Honest Hearts when I played through it, but this video gave me a better understanding and appreciation of how much work and passion went into it.
As someone who has been to Zions National Park several times, I have to say that it was great seeing an in game depiction of the park. Although of course, being a minimized game recreation, they could only capture a fraction of the beauty of the park, notably the in game Zion tends to have too much red rock. Zion in real life has a lot of black and white rock along with the red rock. There is also plenty of vibrant foliage, more than you’d probably think for a desert. But of course you can’t really fault the devs due to the limited time and resources they had, but I’d say this is all the more excuse to see Zion in person yourself if you ever are near the Southern Utah area
I love HH, and it DID make me travel to Zion national park to see it myself. As a fan of FNV who reads up all the lores and stuff, this video is an amazing work. Hope to see more! Also, I really liked that usage of FTL soundtrack in the middle of video.
it's actually pretty accurate in scale to the real Zion national park. I went there in summer 2020 on a cross country motorcycle trip, basically my prelude to Vegas. the whole ride through the main road was around 20 minutes, even in traffic that stopped for a minute or two sometimes.
I love Honest Hearts so much. My favorite DLC, and I wish there was more post-end content, but revisiting it feels so empty and barren. It makes sense, as everyone left, but man....
Amazing work man! HH blew me away when I first played it, just as a refreshing change from the destruction of the wasteland. So much so that I've wanted to visit Zion ever sense then. I've watched some of your videos off and on and was SHOCKED to realize you're under 50k subs, criminally under rated. Keep on keeping on!
Thank you very much for making this video. Honest hearts is my favorite of the New Vegas DLC. Follows Chalk is a sweet boy, Waking Cloud I unfortunately didn’t utilize much, Daniel… he means well. Joshua definitely steals the spotlight; Keith Szarabajka is a fantastic voice actor. He gives Joshua an air of sternness with a tinge of Conviction or wrath. I really enjoyed the themes of religion and tribal conflict being in the front and center. It’s just kind of sad that Bethesda really worked Obsidian to the bone to get this out.
I have a real soft spot for this dlc even though its so simple. I just think the atmosphere, characters, and story of this place is so beautiful, immersive, and unique that it grabs me. Whenever I'd play a new vegas character one of the first questions I'd ask myself is, "Would they side with Daniel or Joshua and to what degree?" And I've been able to get a lot of variation from my different characters. To bitter old men happy to destroy an enemy, young starry eyed girls thinking death isn't the answer, to a scarred tribal superimposing her own trauma on this new conflict and using it to confront and grow past that. It's kind of sad people don't love it as much as I think it deserves especially because I thought its depiction of religion was so well handled. I know this video was a draining process to make but I appreciate it so much, thank you and keep up the good work.
My first impression was unimpressed but the longer I played it the more I became impressed with it. It had a lot of interesting factions and Joshua Graham is a very memorable character with an iconic look.
Brilliant. Thank you for your effort. By now you've covered dozens of hours' worth of content and it's a huge achievement for the whole fallout community. Thank you for your work.
This is probably my favorite of the dlcs as it felt like I unlocked a new open world instead of just an area, you cannot return to Dead Money's area, and while you can return to The Divide and the Big MT, this one felt the most populated, with a plethora of new characters and things to find
I swear, every single time I think I’ve heard everything about FO:NV’s development, I find out that it only scratches the tip of the iceberg. It is absolutely *criminal* what restrictions Bethesda put onto Obsidian to allow development. Just imagine what NV could have been with one more year in the oven. Or two years. Just imagine what Honest Hearts alone could have been. We got such a solid game with 18 months development time. And Bethesda even robbed them of a bonus because the game scored one below their agreed upon Metacritic average. Bethesda needs to be shamed as much as possible for the rest of their existence for what they did to FO:NV and Obsidian studios.
Honestly I love Joshua's depiction in the DLC. He's still intimidating at times, but you can see he's discovered his humanity since leaving the Legion.
HH is my least favourite DLC for FNV but it has its main saving grace in The Survivalist. One of the best pieces of non-story content ever written. Thanks though, for devoting so much time and effort to this often overlooked part of the story.
Honest hearts is probably my favorite New Vegas DLC. I owe it to the fantastic writing of the survivalist and the fantastic writing and voice performance of Joshua graham's character as well as the thoughtful and genuine approach towards religion post-war. It scratched a moral and philosophical itch that very few games manage to.
This was my favourite DLC. I enjoyed playing (and enjoyed the loot) from Old World Blues and Dead Money, but they felt like different games/out of place...if you were playing them as normal missioms throughout your first playthrough.
oh god what a fucking BANGER of a video. thank you for the work you do man, you make such amazing content out of all the people in the fallout community. Please, keep doing what you do for as long as you can.

Zion is probably one of my favourite fallout experiences, easy. The location, characters, story, lore (man in the caves) and just, history of the national park and it’s mix of early post war to modern day post war make the park a great vacation from the Mojave.
that's really the coolest part, it feels so steeped with history, from the prewar tourists and rangers to the postwar tribes, it just works
Made me want to actually go to zion and if I get the chance I will
@@giovannicervantes2053 It is nice to see how many people are inspired to go to Zion after playing the DLC. As someone who has been there a couple times before myself, I have to say that despite how hard they tried in this DLC, there is only so much you can do to try and capture even a fraction of the beauty of Zions National Park in a 2010 game engine, seeing it with your own eyes is another experience all together
@@bobbyferg9173 I saw a bit of it from videos and my God it's absolutely astonishing

Theres a bunch of side content, but with a limited number of NPCs it made it difficult, especially when they were blowing memory on the caravan group thats meant to die immediately.
its simply the least content of any of the other dlcs. its not bad just not the best and therefor some ppl wont like it
I remember as a kid trying honest hearts and being confused why everyone in the dlc was hostile.
Man I ripped off 2 rounds luckily missing before he talked to me.
Yep, same thing happened to me first time I played Honest Hearts.
i love how the ambush dialogue indicates how sick everyone is of each other after however long it took them to get to Zion
The more cut content being documented, makes me wish for a total remake using the cut content and cut multiple choices. I wouldn’t care how long it takes, this game deserves more.
Same here, I didn't know that DLC had this much cut content as well, if I knew how to use modding tools I might try something myself

I've been saying this forever! We NEED Fallout New Vegas: Director's Cut
@@conmereth Time to learn Creation Engine then :D
The story of the Survivalist for me, is my favorite bit of lore in the entire Fallout universe. It encompasses, for me, almost in it's entirety, the bitter reality of what surviving in a post-apocalyptic world would be like. Losing everything, but just trying to hang onto anything good you had left.
Randall Clark is my favourite Fallout character/lore piece. I'd write how I feel about it but I'd just be echoing your sentiments.
Yes, exactly! It quite literally was his will for sorrows to retaliate if needed

Joshua Graham's voice actor voices most of the male Dark Elves in Skyrim
He also kind of looks like colonel sanders.
I read Joshua as Jef at first and thought "ya Jed does seem pretty cool"
I really enjoyed the serious view on religion they took in this dlc. As he said most games just use it as the butt of a joke or dismiss it outright, which I think is lazy.. It's central to the story of virtually every culture in human history, why can't it be examined honestly the same way politics can be.
FNV managed to handle religion and political philosophies respectfully and in interesting ways. Not bad from a couple of CRPG nerds.
To be fair, Fallout 3 did something similar with its quest and the Children of the Atom, but it wasnt nearly as in depth as Honest Hearts.
this literally, it's really lazy and looks dumb doing that
I did legit kill Follows Chalk on my first time playing Honest Hearts.
Obviously I reloaded... who the heck would be confused and think that Chaos in Zion is the whole DLC!? XD
Literally me lol, reloaded after I got to the sorrows camp and won the shootout
I have a bad habit of killing my companions in the base game, and well, FC and WC got the brunt of my fuck ups in my first go around
All of this really makes me wish that New Vegas gets completely remade one day with all of the stuff cut from the dlc and base game restored, and the dlc load order shenanigans fixed
Fnv directors cut
As long as it's remade by Obsidian. Bethesda would, without a doubt, add nothing but trash and ruin all the preexisting content.

I honestly like HH the best out of any of the DLC's. It doesn't overstay it's welcome like some of the other DLCs, and it's genuinely the most fun area to explore in the game for me.

Dead Money: "Am I a JOKE to you?"
Can't say same about OWB and LR, those are kinda too long at times 😅
When I first heard Jed Masterson’s voice, I immediately said *”OH MY GOD ITS LEE!!”* lol I’m such a TWD fanboy.
Zion made me shed a tear with how beautiful the map was, i played dead money and honest hearts back to back and the contrast is insane.
Well said 🖤
I really could never side with Daniel after I tried it once, once I learned they would salt the earth of Zion and reading the survivalists logs I just feel that Daniel has no right to remove them. Zion, even though it's dangerous, is one of the last pieces of beauty in the Fallout universe, destroying it is not an thing I want to happen
Being Catholic, I'm of the belief that Graham is entirely in the right, and I would argue that compelling Graham to spare Salt-Upon-Wounds is also the correct way to go.

yeah, a few people have basically said that its the right thing to do anyway, the reason being that if you pay attention the dialogue joshua has a strong belief in self defense and mercy. "That's it? That's the DLC? That was just half an hour of killing tribals!"
Most people's first playthrough.
I really wish New Canaan was a location you could visit in this DLC how its talked about by Jed and the almost legendary status it is given as a thriving community in the heart of an otherwise chaotic land filled with warlords raiders and tribal gangs was really intriguing to me
They couldn't do it for New Vegas and that was the main game. They would never be able to get New Canaan running the way it would need to.
I wouldn't imagine it to be "thriving", really. But it would be a generally peaceful and chill place compared to the rest of the wastes.
I’d love for the next “out west” Fallout to be about New Canaan.
The devs really said "the time for talk is over" *cuts content* "the lords work must be done"

@Martin the Warrior oh my God that was fucking beautiful
A side to the story that showed us what the white legs would have been like would have added a lot. Buy by far the more cinematic into would be best.

The joke about Salt Upon Wounds’ toast had me dying laughing, amazing video as always!
I remember asking Sawyer about this dlc during one of his streams and if they had to cut a lot of stuff out of Zion, he said not particularly. They did what they wanted to do with it.

the most hyped video of the year finally releases
So thankful for all the work you've poured into this channel. Always a pleasure to see your uploads
These videos are so damn incredible it’s almost insulting to call them just “cut content”. Please keep up the amazing work
I love HH, and it DID make me travel to Zion national park to see it myself.
Hey man, just wanted to say that these cut content videos are absolutely awesome! I can't even imagine the amount of work that goes into making these.
Ive been waiting for the other DLC cut content for quite some time. THANK you for putting all the effort in to bring this to us!
I love Honest Hearts so much. My favorite DLC, and I wish there was more post-end content, but revisiting it feels so empty and barren. It makes sense, as everyone left, but man....
Do they still leave even if you convince them to stay? I haven't been back after I've left.... maybe I need to start a new playthrough!
@@RealBradMiller I'm not sure, because I always told them to leave in my playthroughs.

I adored HH for no other reason than The Survivalist. That character is so good.
Honest Hearts is so underrated imo.
I love how anything concerning Fallout on console boils down to:
"How about no."
Thank you for the time you put into this.God be with you.

100% agreed.

Thank you for covering this game. It's my favorite Rpg of all time and it's something I would play a thousand times over more than Fallout 4.

You put in so much time on this video definitely longest one I’ve seen from you. Such a underrated channel
Bro I just had a long ass week and still have a long Christmas but I get to rest now, I love kicking back to these videos.
HH is my least favourite DLC for FNV but it has its main saving grace in The Survivalist. One of the best pieces of non-story content ever written. Thanks though, for devoting so much time and effort to this often overlooked part of the story.
The response from JE Sawyer that you quoted about adding voicelines to Caeser was a response to a question I asked on Formspring. Gave me a laugh.
THE KING IS BACK! LONG LIVE THE KING!
