When I was 16 years old, which would have been in 1971, I saw Jessie Collin Young and the Youngbloods play at the Satsop Rock Festival, a three day event in rural western Washington. On Saturday morning, we woke up to the announcement that the promoter had skipped out with all the proceeds, leaving the performers high and dry. Most bands refused to play, but three bands agreed to stay and play for free to fill out Saturday and Sunday of the festival. This was Jessie Collin Young with the Youngbloods, Wishbone Ash, and War. Each group played an extended set of several hours and went round robin, repeating many songs over and over for the next two days. I never got to thank you personally for that, Jessie, so let me do so now. Thank you. It was a rewarding experience I've carried my entire life, and showed me that some things are more important than getting paid. I went out and bought your live album the next week, and have loved all the music you have made.
Satsop Rock Festival and Tin Cup Races was to be the Northwest's Woodstock. I rolled in on a Harley. Threw tarps over the bikes to sleep under and get out of the rain. Got nailed by a Stater on the way in for no helmet. They were on all the back roads coming in. A guy in a farm truck full of watermelons tried to run the crowd down. Was never sure what set him off. But we ate a lot of watermelon. Northwest natives were fighting for their rites to fish for salmon and were being jailed for fishing. They came to Satsop and cooked and sold salmon and fry bread to raise bail money for the protesters. Never forgot how good that tasted. Of course the music was amazing and thousands of people, except for one farmer, living in harmony. Over the last several years I've had a chance to play/jam with Banana. Youngbloods guitar player. Now with cotton white hair and going by Grandpa Banana. Check out his YT Videos.
Jesse's voice is embedded in my soul. A true living legend. Everyone knows, loves, and understands the importance of "Get Together". But everyone must check out his catalog of Youngbloods & solo work to appreciate just how talented and precious his work remains to this day.
Hearing the story from Jesse's lips about how he wrote this song for the grunts on the line in the jungle was this Vietnam Veteran's most treasured moment. Thank you for making this happen. And thank Jesse for his help getting me through my hour of Drarkness, Darkness You can make the mountains ring, or make the angels cry.
Jesse Colin Young!!! You've hit a peak here. So great to see him and hear your exchange. I love the fiddle in this song. It underscores the mood well. ❤
I lived for the Young bloods. I am now 70 years old and darkness darkness was my song. I played it over and over and over. There was no getting enough of it and it breaks me down completely and into tears even to this day. It didn't hurt that at the time My last name was Youngblood it isn't now but it was then.
💜💜💜 This! Thank you so much for this reaction Rob and Amber and Thank you so much Mr Jesse Colin Young for all the BEAUTIFUL and INCREDIBLE music you brought to this world!
Thanks for bringing me full circle on this gem of a song. I have been a Jesse Colin Young fan for 50+ years. This song was a favorite of my friends/brothers serving in Viet Nam who turned me on to it in 69 or 70. It was heavy to hear Jesse say he wrote it for those in Nam. They heard you sir; yes indeed they did. My service was stateside later. This song always had a special meaning to me and always will. Too many didn't make it back. Some sadness at their loss but joy at the memories we shared. RIP Tony, JD, Harold, Donnie, Smitty, Junebug, Chefo. Will meet you again on the other side. Save me a place. Peace out.
The studio version of this was one of Mom's favorite songs, to the point where she specifically bought it when iTunes first became a thing. It really takes off after the first verses. I've long called it 'Depression Anxiety: The Song,' and the story behind its writing fits that mood perfectly.
I can't tell you how much time I spent listening to Vets tell their dark stories from the war and just giving them a sounding board for their memories.
Ridgetop is one of my favorite songs ever. But it almost got me fired one time. Some wannabe musician coworker had a meltdown over "commercial crap" and attacked me and destroyed my radio.
@@glenntrueman8209 I have the studio version on my playlist (the only version I'm familiar with). So, I checked out the one you mention. It's a total transformation and, really, very nice. Thanks for recommending.
SO TOUCHING....DEEPLY FELT! Many of our relatives lived through these times...and, some did not. SO raw....THANK YOU, JESSE, for sharing your talents with the world!! HUGS!!
This song peaked at #86 on the Billboard Hot 100(on its re-release). Good to see Jesse is still sharp at 82 years old! You've heard their "Get Together". That song is unfortunately as relevant today as it was in 1967.
I graduated HS in 1970. It was a very scary time! Most of the 50,000 solders that lost their lives in Vietnam were teenagers drafted right out of high school! All males were required to sign up for the draft within 30 days of their 18th birthday. All 3 networks broadcasted nightly casualty reports and war footage. Once a year there was a lottery. Every ping-pong ball had a date. First date picked had highest priority for getting drafted. My birthday came up 60. The next year my kid brother was 330. For anyone my age, these songs are very personal. Woodstock is very personal.
What a pleasure watching Jesse on your channel, and hearing this great song. Another great band from the 1960's that has a very similar sound is It's A Beautiful Day. They have a haunting folk like sound, and also use a violin. Check out their song White Bird.
Jesse, gotta tell you. We named our second son Colin in your honor along with the name sounding Irish. Great tune. Spent a lot of time with this tune. Great version here. Glad you all enjoyed this!
OMG. Saw him open for CSN&Y. Seattle 1974 ,and several other times, this song brought out the old cricket lighter ,it was before Bic. They did several encores before CSN&Y did there 42 songs. I'll never forget those lighters though , in the Darkness
I was extremely impressed with his voice... I remember the young bloods from back in the day but I never heard that song and I am very impressed with that... Read reaction guys... Keep being awesome !!!...
This was great, and a wonderful way to honor Jesse and his musical contributions over the years. I remember him (solo) and the Youngbloods well from when I was a kid and beyond. Thank you!
Amazing! So great to see the legendary Jesse Colin Young! Both of my older brothers were in Vietnam when "Get Together" and "Darkness Darkness" came out. What a treasure! Thanks for a great interview and song! ✌💙✌
I'm a 63-year-old who only just 'discovered' this somewhat under the radar album within the last couple years and really dig it. Nice to see you all...get together. Sorry about that.
Jesse is a Master and an extremely gifted musician. Thank you for sharing him and his wonders. Please react to If You Don't Know Me By Now by Melvin and the Blue notes. I feel that Teddy P's version is the best. His voice is so soulful.
Jesse is one of my absolute favorites of all time. Elephant Mountain is one of the best albums ever made. I am so happy to see that he is doing well. One more word - Quicksand.
Jesse Colin Young! What a great guest. I hope you got to do more interviews with him and let him tell more stories in them. I grew up with Get Together and Darkness, Darkness.
Robert Plant covered this song ,yes he did ,,,,, I have Jesses albums Light Shine , Love on the Wing, American Dreams On the road that I got many years back and they are full of great compositions /// I'm glad you made it to this Rob Squad Reaction Jesse and you' re looking great and we hope you will make it back soon .../**/
Saw Jesse open for CSNY, August 17, 1974 at Foreman Field, Old Dominion University. I think this is his best vocal track. Or maybe "Get Together". Great voice in any case. Maybe being a VN vet gives this one the edge. Great to see Jesse. What a treat.
One of my favs no matter who covers it always brings a tear to my eye….Robert Plant…Richie Havens…..Ian Mathews……Mott the Hoople…..Screaming Trees…..but no one does it better than the original …love his albums Soul of a City boy…..Love on the Wing…and Together…..and so manny more
This song has gotten me through some rough times, very cool to hear this version and with the man himself as a guest. Elephant Mountain is an excellent album, the studio version of this song should def. make an appearance on this channel! ✌️
I have a Jesse Colin Young solo LP. My turntable hasn't been hooked up for a while, so I haven't listened to it for a while. I couldn't find it on CD the times I have looked. Looking in wiki, I think it might had been called Young Bloods. It had a painting by Escher for the cover. I remember a cover of Nobody's Dirty Business on it.
I'm particular to his "Songbird" album, or I should say cassette...because I used it to smooch with my honey in the back of a VW Beetle in the 70s. It was around the same time as Elton John's Madman Across the Water album, and I swear I think they were of equal high quality and songage...for lack of better words. "Songbird", "Daniel" and "Before You Came" were my favorites. He should do "Before You Came"...which, now that I think about it, is about the sunset of an Indian nation, which thrived before we came, sad to day. On Elton's album "Indian Sunset" is about the same thing. [Twilight Zone theme] I saw sweet-tongued Jesse at Park Center, now called Grady Cole Center, in Charlotte, back in the '70s I guess it was. He has taken on a little gray since then, but who hasn't? :)
Jay & Amber, You both should try an old song my sister turned me on to. It is called. D.O.A. by the group called Bloodrock off the album called Bloodrock 2. 😮
Listen to the 1969 version the original version of darkness darkness when his voice was better and he could understand what he was singing, and because it had to do with early Vietnam or in that era because it was Vietnam at that time every time you heard it, it would break your heart Because you know that they were out there in the jungle thousands of miles away in a place that they never thought they would be in ! Please give it a try 1969 recording of darkness darkness by the Youngbloods !
You really need to listen to Lisa Torban's version of Darkness, Darkness. Try and get the one with footage of the Titanic on it. Absolutely haunting !!
Hi guys. Could you play a song from Richard Harris? The song is MacArthur Park. It's from the 60/70s. Yes, he was an actor. He was in the musical motion picture Camelot. He was also in a film called The Man Call Horse. The last movie he did was the first two Harry Potter movies. He played Dumbledore. Believe it or not, it is him .😊 I miss him. He was such a great actor.
I love his version of "Jambalaya" (originally a Hank Williams song from the early 50's), very fun. And I do think that J & Amber should listen to the studio version of Darkness, Darkness. Much more wild & impactful than this nice version they just heard.
Listen to the original Youngbloods version when they performed as master craftsmen, Jesse's voice was at it top, Banana's arrangements and guitar are pure genius as well as David Lindley as guest on fiddle . The song was never done better: ruclips.net/video/2xC2JZ6NLv8/видео.html

Thanks for all the great music Jesse. Elephant Mountain in particular a favorite album for me in 69'
Love it too.
Elephant Mountain is a superb album, one of the forgotten gems of the 1960s. I don't even care if you review it but you must give it a listen.
I’m a child of the’60’s and The Youngbloods have been one of my favorite groups ever since then.
This makes me want to rosin up my bow and join Connie in that string arrangement! ❤

So awesome to hear his story. What a lovely man
Saw Jesse in concert in 1975 at the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey. I had a front row seat and he was great and he had a great band with him.
I saw him and band at a little daylong mini-festival at a racetrack around the same time. It was my favorite act at that concert.

You have to listen to his tribute to native Americans, "Before You Came".It has a great guitar solo!!!
Very nice. But the original studio version is far superior. Please listen to that take to get the full effect.
Great song … the original studio version is my favorite. BTW, Mott the Hoople do a hard rock cover of this song that is excellent.
Wish it really was the Youngbloods version.
Two songs I recommend.mr.sun , mr.moon by Paul revere and the raiders.and the rapper by the jaggerz

While I enjoyed watching this, I think the studio version is more fierce and intense.

Try TINA S and her rendition of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata
Ask him who played the fiddle on the original.
It was Charlie Daniels if I know my history.
Sorry I may be wrong. But Charlie Daniels was the producer of the album.
My favorite Jesse song is "Sunlight" - it's beautiful and here's a link - ruclips.net/video/BztpSYvTyRM/видео.html
So this is original version...i thought this was by or written by robert plant
STEVIE NICKS Fleetwood Mac Sara
This is lame compared with the studio version, which is gold and magical.
