    The incomparable Jon Lord. One of the finest keyboardists in rock history. Then of course Ian Paice on the drums is just amazing. Richie Blackmore has come to be known as a legendary guitarist, with Roger Glover on bass guitar. That just leaves those amazing vocals by Ian Gillan. Wow! What an incredibly talented group of musicians. Deep Purple has gone through many personnel changes, but this lineup is most definitely my favorite.

    I worked for the local newspaper the Leicester Mercury in the early nineties, and my Line Manager shared that he knew Jon Lord, he lived in his street I believe; anyhoo he said he and his mates used to call round to ask if Jon wanted to come out and play footy; Jon's Mum used to say he was busy practising piano; he couldn't understand why Jon didn't want to at least sometimes play football; years later by chance he bumped in to Jon, went to his mansion and saw his Rolls-Royce outside, beautiful beast it was; he said he understood then, and understands completely why Jon was so focussed on the thing he was good at; he said "Here's me scraping a living, always fighting to keep the wolves from the door, and theres Jon, having done what he loves, comfortable and worry-free; good on 'im, just wish I'd done something like that!"

    Deep Purple is always worth a listen and thanks for doing one from an underappreciated album, great song. To hear them utterly cut loose, try either Highway Star live from Made in Japan or if you heard it already, try from Made in Europe, try the live You Fool No One, one of Ritchie Blackmore's best solos ever. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

    February 2nd, 1985, Richfield Coliseum.
    Me and three friends from high school are at their "Perfect Strangers Tour", second row, center stage. I was able to get good seats because one of my sisters was in the Belkin Ticket Club. And I didnt tell them. I told them we were in the second row on the first level, on the side of the stage. They freaked out when I handed them our tickets when we got to the doors.
    Best concert I ever saw! My ears rang for 2 days.
    Jon Lord, the keyboard player, was less than 15 feet in front of me, surrounded by multiple keyboards, ROCKING them (figuratively and literally) back and forth. I have an 8x10 of him in action in my rock and roll dining room.
    I was looking up at them, waiting for them to topple over and possibly crush us.
    The music critic, legendary Jane Scott who wrote for newspapers and Rolling Stone Magazine, was sitting 2 seats away.
    It was really an amazing night... :)

      Agree with you about the studio versions. I hate live albums. Especially live albums from the 70s, where the jamming and guitar solos (yuck!) go on forever and ever making the songs three times as long. With some admirable exceptions like Thin Lizzy, Kiss and Wishbone Ash.

  • @Jessica_Roth
    @Jessica_Roth Год назад +6

    Thanks for doing the full version. (There's a radio edit that cuts off the outro.)
    Jon Lord (RIP) preferred to use his organ, but he can certainly jam on the piano as well, as you see here. He had classical training and would work in all sorts of things into his solo spots in concert.
    The star of this song, IMO, is Roger Glover's throbbing bass. Unfortunately, as I've mentioned, this was the final album ("Who Do We Think We Are") before guitarist Ritchie Blackmore's ongoing issues with singer Ian Gillan led to Blackmore firing Gillan and Glover (who had been together in Episode Six before this and who had been brought in as a pair to replace the original singer and bassist, from the lineup that did "Hush").
    Still, as I noted on your Rainbow "Since You Been Gone" reaction, eventually Glover and Blackmore buried the hatchet, and that led to the 1980s reunion, with "Perfect Strangers".
    You still have so many classics from this "Mark II" lineup, from "Highway Star" to "Child in Time" to "Pictures of Home" (and I'm only scratching the surface here), but if you want to change things up a bit, you might try a bit of the "Mark III" lineup, with David Coverdale (the Whitesnake guy) and Glenn Hughes taking the places of Gillan and Glover. "Burn" is an absolute classic, and arguably the best guitar riff Blackmore ever thought up.
    Or you could skip ahead to the "Mark VII" line up from the 1990s and give a listen to "Ted the Mechanic", perhaps. It's all good.
