RIP Jon Lord the master of the overdriven Hammond Organ, this song has one of my favourite opening riffs. The Machine Head album has four of my favourite Deep Purple songs (Highway Star, Smoke On The Water, Lazy and Space Truckin'), and sounds as good now as it did in 1972.

    • @terrylandess6072
      @terrylandess6072 11 месяцев назад +2

Growing up they played 'Smoke' so many times, every person wanting to play guitar learned that riff - it was easy to get burnt out on. Now so many years later without the constant reminding of it, it once again becomes a pleasure to hear and listen for the little details. As for those others - yes - cream of the crop.

@@notedrockhistorian4382 OMG I just went and listened to it. Shatner sounds like too much Romulan ale and the group playing the music sounds like the same mix used for Sheryl Crow - All I wanna Do.

Made in Japan was the first GREAT live album. Every song is better than the studio version.
FUN FACT: The live version of Smoke on the Water off Made in Japan made the top 40 songs in the US before the studio version! The song got very little exposure on the radio until Made in Japan came out. And now it's considered one of the most important songs in rock history!

As a 65 year old I can say I love your reviews… full of enthusiasm. It feels good watching a much younger person loving the music I grew up with.
Incidentally, this track and the whole album Machine Head was recorded in a hotel lobby.
This is Mark 2 Deep Purple. I saw them at least four times. I also saw Mark 3 twice. I never saw Mark 4 with Tommy Bolin. Mark 4 produced “Come Taste The Band” considered by many as not a Deep Purple album, even though it is very good. For me though the Mark 2 set up was the best. The last time I saw them was with Steve Morse about 6 years ago, they were brilliant. And what can I say about the man in black Ritchie Blackmore? Fuxxing genius.

  • @alekhidell

I was absolutely glued to your reaction….so animated. You made a grumpy old man very happy because it’s so good to see you enjoying music that I grew up listening to and is beginning to become appreciated for what it is…pure rock, played by virtuoso musicians. This song is the essence of Deep Purple, a band (like Lovebites) who really showed their true worth on stage. Jon Lord and Ritchie Blackmore, backed by Ian Paice and Roger Glover could play “Lazy” three nights in a row and it would not only be almost completely different each time but might be a tad shorter or, more often, up to twice as long as the original. Although the band had ceased to exist when I discovered them (Ritchie was breaking new ground with Ronnie James Dio) I did see them after the first reunion and was in the audience for Ritchie’s last ever performance with the band (30 years ago). Once he left, so did I. Not sure but I don’t remember you reacting to the next incarnation of the band (Deep Purple Mk 3) for which I would recommend the song Burn, and suggest you do a little reading up beforehand because it was a slight change in direction but, personally, I now think it was the high point of the band’s career.

You describing it as ‘chaotic’ is on point cause one way they’re taking you with the guitars and *BAM* something else entirely comes in 😭 It’s honestly like a madhouse at a carnival with how over the place it is and how much fun it was listening to it! Man was going in with the harmonica like?? As always, it’s so cute watching you have fun with these reacts, especially towards the ending where you threw your hands up 🥹❤️

Deep Purple has such a vast catalog of music to dive into from 1968... Remember, they've had 5 vocalists sing for the band (including bassist/ co-vocalist Glenn Hughes)... But the most iconic line-up was this one (Mark II) w/ Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (keyboards), Ian Paice (drums) and Roger Glover (bass)... 🤘🤘Which helped define hard rock and metal music. Everyone knows the riff for 'Smoke on the water'... just iconic track 🔥🔥
Check out more of Deep Purple w/ Ian Gillan - 'Fireball' ... 'Woman from Tokyo'... 'Perfect strangers' ... 'Pictures of home' ... 'The battle rages on' ... 'Sometimes I feel like screaming' ... 'Bloodsucker' ... "Knocking at your back door"
With original singer Rod Evans - 'Hush' ... 'Lalena'
With interim singer Joe Lynn Turner (also of Rainbow) - 'The cut runs deep' ... 'King of dreams'
With singer David Coverdale (and bassist/ vocalist Glenn Hughes) - 'Mistreated' ... 'Soldier of fortune' ... 'Lady double dealer' ... 'Sail away'... "Comin' home"

I was always jealous of my older brother who could easily play the riffs of Deep Purple and Led Zep since he plays by ear. Whereas I always needed sheet music to play. And my brother owns nearly all the classic 70's rock albums from that era where we both grew up. "Lazy" has long been my favorite DP song after "Highway Star".
In 1976 DP released a compilation album called "When We Rock, We Rock and When We Roll, We Roll". Its a great album except for its omission of "Lazy". But it did include live versions of "Woman From Tokyo" and "Smoke on the Water".
Lastly, I sometimes like to compare "Lazy" to Emerson, Lake & Palmer's epic song, "KarnEvil 9 part 1 & 2". Playing all those songs on the car CD player is the best way to enjoy a road trip!

The biggest problem with Deep Purple was Smoke on the Water. It was everywhere. So much so that I didn’t bother with the band. They were a parody band. The shit thing is I missed out on fantastic music. I’m old by the way and they passed me by in the 70s. Finding DP reactions on YT made me (re)discover them, 50 years late. And I apologise to the band and to all DP fans who had the good sense to see past the oversaturation to their genius

Hi Aileen... have been watching your videos for a few months now... really love your energy. You wanna have your mind blown? Listen and watch Edgar Winter Group perform "Frankenstein"... Edgar will bedazzle you with his playing 3 instruments in the song. An appropriately named song for October also.

This has been on my playlist since 1972. My favorite song to just enjoy and make me feel good, the organ riff at the beginning sends a tingle up my spine every time.

I was gonna say the same thing that this last guy just said but he beat me to it🤨😆Yeah I know how much you like live performances for their energy and camaraderie and the way they play off of each other! Well there’s no better example of that than the live version from ‘72 in Japan 🇯🇵 It’s most definitely one for the ages!! They were in their prime and at their best!! Total banger!!!😝🤟🎸✌️🫶❤

    Those were the years 60s, 70s & early 80s.
The battle of the best lead guitarist.
Blackmore (Deep Purple), May (Queen), Page (Led Zeppelin), Iommi (Black Sabatth), Carlton (Nazareth), Santana (Santana), Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall, Eric Clapton,... etc
    Superb & awesome.😊😊😊

If you should need inspiration for another adventure with Deep Purple and Machine Head, you could always listen to “Pictures of Home”. Propably my favourite from that album.
Every member of the band gets a chance to show of their abilities. Five solos in one song. Bargain of the week. 😅
