Great review..after 35 years of splitting wood for my wood stove..a masdive heart attack dropped me like a big oak log...so now its time to get a splitter...chamion looks like what im gettin...thanx boss
They have now made some improvements, the oil filter now has a compression fitting rather than a hose clamp. I think they got rid of the hose clamps on some or all of the fittings. It is now 2/23/2022. Check out the new ones at Home Depot. I'm with you, I don't like plastic parts and they could have protected the engine and gas tank better. They also could have protected the pump and oil filter. Great Review. 😃
Yes sir my son bought a few years ago and loves it. What a nice surprise a video from the Boss. Hugs to Frankie &Tildy. Blessings to you & Laurie. 😊🇺🇸.
What can I say, an Honest man giving an honest opinion 10 out of 10, I like this man because he is based on reality. If I wanted a neighbour this would be the man. I cannot comment on the log splitter as we do not have the option to purchase in England...
Quick review. Boss loves it. Many positives. Any Requested Negatives: 1. Left side- in horizontal position needs simple DIY (2-2" x 4" w 2" x 6" between ) shelf to protect hoses, etc. from falling slit logs. 2. Right Side: plastic levers for choke, throttle, and on/off. In sun & cold- will break. He'd replace plastic with metal & would have been happy to pay $50 for it.
Hi Boss,That shelf unit is a must do when you have time, I just don't see a better splitter out there for that price. Great honest review and we thank ya.
Great review. It's nice to hear a review that is honest and doesn't sound like the person is being paid by the manufacturer to push their product. I wish I could find it for what you paid. It's now selling in my area for 1400.00, an increase of $500! Yup, inflation is killing us in Feb 2022.
Boss of the Swamp on Thursday. KEWL. Thanks for the review, nice to get info from someone whose opinions can be valued and believed. You do good work our friend, God Bless and may he keep you....
I have the same model but I think its a 28 ton . Mine has two side identical platforms and it rules !!! Always starts never had a problem with it , the same as with my champion generator . When I was looking for reviews on RUclips , that's when I came across the boss and the review of your champion generators . I spent the whole week watch every video that I could find of you and Frankie and have been a fan ever sense . Thanks for all the enjoyment bubba .
Excellent personal review. I like this type as much as a product review. I’m glad after two years it’s still meeting your needs, that says a lot. Thanks for taking the time.
Jim, I always appreciate your opinion and reviews on products. You test it, evaluate it, and give your honest assessment. I've purchased a few different items based on your reviews. Thanks for being a voice I feel I can trust.
Hi boss I love my champion 27 ton splitter as soon as I saw your video on it I thought Yep that’s the one I’ve use mine a lot got it for 899 with a military discount thanks for the midweek video
I'm glad you did the review. I'm buying the 25 ton tomorrow (on sale for $899) but I have a problem.... SNOW! The roads are muddy and my truck isn't 4wd so I have to take my jeep which means I have to tow it 90 miles at 45mph. Its gonna take forever.😁
There' another RUclipsr who shows you their shield made out of wood to protect the oil filter. I just made one of those today for my 27T Champion. I also went and installed an hour meter that I got off Amazon. It has a wire that you wrap around the spark plug wire 5x's and insert it into the meter. It tracks in 0.10 hr increments. I put it on to help monitor when I need to do the maintenance on it. Thank for the video.
Have the same splitter it's been great I built a protector for the engine components. The operator side I feel doesn't need any protection since I can handle it.
Hey boss man I am thinking hard about buying a splitter . Thank you for this update. I have a Champion generator and it works great. HAAAA it is Thursday and you posted a video. Made my day.
I’ve got a 10 ton Panther splitter that I got 35 years ago. I had to replaced the seals in the hydraulic cylinder once, also replaced the control valve once. Still got the original Briggs engine. It’s split a lot of wood, still going strong.
I have a 27 ton Champion splitter that I purchased 4 or 5 years ago. It's design is a little different than the one reviewed here but I have had a similar experience - starts without much complaint and splits without failure. If I have one complaint about the design of mine it's the placement of the wheels. The wheels are positioned right where you want to stand which results in you having to lean over while working with heavy logs. It's killer on the back and limits the amount I can accomplish in one day. Consequently, I try and recruit a second person so the leaning is reduced. Overall, a great tool.
If you use it vertically you won’t have to worry about the controls or oil filter and oil hose. Of course you explained you prefer using it horizontally. I used mine vertically when I was splitting large diameter rounds and heavy pieces. Just sayin... good stuff as always.
Thanks for the review on the log splitter. Always good to hear from someone you can trust and believe. Best of he as lth to you and your lady. God bless you both. Dave
Woo hoo!! This is a pleasant surprise!!! A vid from The Boss on a Thursday night! 👍 GREAT way to start the weekend! Looks like an AWESOME machine, great idea with the protective shelf! I'm with you on plastic....sucks in cold weather!
What some people don't know is most Champion,Troy built, Swisher and many more splitters are using Honda engines. Same difference for Husqvarna and Poulan, many people think Poulan is French and made in Quebec Canada lol, not realizing its actually a Huskie..I'll be moving up to the 27 ton when my smaller champion dies , which will be never lol....Great vid as always....
I have the same splitter I think 3 years now I really like the upright for big logs I put my tractor loader next to it sit on a log and split and put it in my loader then go stack it I have been very happy too
Good to see what you are up to mid week. I will confer with my brother in Oregon and see what his splitter is like. Now that I feel a bit educated on a least one type. Thanks for the surprise video!
You know I love your channel, and yours is an excellent review. For me wood is a necessity because I heat, cook and make hot water with it. We have no other means of doing this here by choice. Wood is plentiful and cheap here in Chile. The problem for me is my arthritic back and body. I am the same age as you are and saw the writing on the wall that I needed to up my wood splitting game. As a "YOUT" i used to split a lot of wood by hand. Not anymore. It is not possible. So I needed a good splitter that picked up the logs and I also wanted to have a splitting head that split on the push and on the pull since I do not like the wait for the reset. I had one that was tractor mounted when I was a kid on the farm. The head reset automatically and was slow but dangerous too. I spent a pretty Peso to have a splitter custom built here in Chile. I will not put a link here because that would not be polite. It splits both ways and has a log lifter too. The splitting table is waist height so I am not bending over at all. That little difference in height from hip to knee tears me up. Also I foresaw the problem that you had with your splitter and made a larger table to hold the wood while I was splitting and preventing drops of wood. This also lets me concentrate on splitting a hopper, or lift arm, full of wood while not having to worry about throwing the wood on the ground and pick it up again (using my back) later. So I have in inflow table and outflow table of sorts. The nice thing is that it is all on a tricycle wheel set up and is a little bigger than yours but equally easy to move. I did pay more for my splitter ($2,492) but it is really durable too and I had my Mennonite fabricator build it with the intention that I was going to try and break it. SO it is industrial strength. My grand kids will have this wood splitter to use for their whole lives with only likely a new engine if 20 years or so needed (i they take care of it). They do sell log splitters here in Chile but they all have similar short comings that will not work for me for the remaining years (or days) I have left in this world. Thank you so much for sharing your review. It looks like what you have is perfect for you. Sorry for being long winded but I like my splitter so much it is hard not to brag. Jim in Chile.
Boss I put a 12 foot ladder with 2 planks attached on saw horses and I fill up the planks with the wood and slide them down to the splitter, it will protect the engine if put along the side
I’ve had the exact same splitter for 2 years and it has worked flawlessly. My only complaint was the size of the yellow wings on the front and back side of the splitter, especially the little one on the operator side. You wont need a shelf to protect the oil filter if you make that little wing about 3x the size it is now. AND you wont have wood falling off of it anymore. I even noticed at the end of the video you had split a big round and had to use your body to keep it from falling, and then had to move it to rest it down below while you split the other half. A bigger wing will eliminate every bit of that. Keep on keepin’ on, mountain man!
Yes a shelf would safeguard the hoses, maybe a hinged type device? I’d also consider a portable platform / table level with splitter. Just thinking......
Thanks for your valuable insight and wisdom sir. Ruggedmade makes a nice log lifter kit that bolts on to splitters and you can use the larger table on the other side to protect the hydraulic filter.
Your a good man . I'm glad I came across your videos they are my favorite out of all the dudes that have channels . You have a good personality and sense of humor . I know if we knew each other we would be good friends . You be cool and I'll see yah Sunday brother.
I have a County line 25 ton from Tractor supply, it didn't come with any racks, I ordered 4 of them, and mounted them like on yours, then 2 more next to the other 2, it covers the engine, and the pump on other side, do have to set it in the vertical position to fill gas tank or mess with engine, but no problem, beats a log breaking something.
First time with any splitter and I went with Champion and I’m glad I did. I’m hard core and use two chords for winter heating. Usually split by hand but I’m 72 this year. I deserve it! $1275 at Home Depot. 2024
I had a pc of wood fall down a put a big dent in my gas tank. I would also like to see the oil filter facing down and it should also be protected along with the pump and engine on the other side. I had Home Depot put it together and they put the two hyd. hoses on back wards. It would not retract, I had to turn the hoses around and then it ran the way it should. Home Depot did not care to contact me. Champion customer was very good to me. Thanks for the review.
Fascinating...all the way through that review I was thinking "ok, but what does it do" so then you showed how it worked at the end. I have never seen one - we don't have them here that I know of. It's too hot and we don't have the trees so much any more. So thanks for the education
Thank you for the honest review. One thing I noticed is that you have to pull back the hydraulic arm to bring the cylinder back. The craftsman cane back by itself. Do you miss that feature? Thank you.
We decided to go with the 40 ton Red Rock from Princess Auto, not because we thought we needed all that power, or are compensating....We just liked the space behind the wheel to work, the Ariens you were almost standing on the wheel. It's big, it's heavy but it's stable and lots of room to work out the back.
Thanks for the review Boss! Sold my Huskee 22 ton about 6 months ago - had it for 10 years and it still ran great. But I find myself handsplitting nearly everything and decided to reduce the number of machines I have to maintain - but, I'm sure as I get older, I'll be buying another! Cheers!
I guess some viewers have a short memory. I remember you saying last Sunday you would probably do the splitter review mid week. About 8 yrs ago, I bought a Champion 22 ton splitter and it worked well every year. I left it with my son when I sold my cabin 2 yrs ago. Mine had metal levers though so it looks like they cut some corners since then. I paid 999 Canadian then, so you got a good deal and 5 ton more splitting value. I used to save those huge pieces until the end so I could split vertical into chunks I could handle horizonal. I built a wooden cover over the work area and a box over the engine for weather protection. Mine didn't have the extra side shelves but yes, you need a shelf over that filter and hose area for sure. Thanks for the review.
I had an issue with the hydraulic hose popping off the nipple fitting on the inlet of the fluid filter. Seems that the nipple fitting/hose clamp connections are a shortcoming. Ended up upgrading to Gates hose...we'll see.
build a table right up flush with the yellow piece. with raised edges or some 2x2 on the edge. looks like im going to get the 27 ton. thanks for the review. happy splitting.
Thank you Boss, I hate when someone reviews a product and haven't even used it yet. I have a Champion generator that I use on my homestead, an older one that I got used and it starts on the first pull almost every time.
Boss, have to tried sitting on a 5 gallon bucket with the splitter vertical ? No bending over doing it that way. I move about 10 to 15 logs within reach and split all of them. Then stack, and start over
I have also noticed that other log splitters have coiled wire that goes around the hoses to protect them. Your right about the oil filter and the other side. I also dented my gas tank, not happy about that. I don't like plastic either. I picked my 27 ton Champion splitter at my local Home Depot, in Allison Park, Pa. and guess what they did. They connected up the two main hoses wrong. The cylinder would not go back. I called Champion customer service and told me how to change them around. I also was told that this would come with 5 gals. of Hyd. oil, they only put in 4 1/2 gals. and they keep the rest. So far so good, and Champion CS people are great. A Big Shout out to Freddy R. for taking care of me. Thanks.
I’m glad you like your splitter. Having operated a hydraulic splitter for many years, when I switched to the DR kinetic splitter, there was no going back. The fly wheel splitter is superior to any hydraulic splitter, if your time has any value. Also, although you have a log holding “shelf” of sorts, it is nowhere as large as the table on the DR.
Good video as always, if a splitter is in my future you just made it easy being a very trusted source! Leaving fuel for the winter is not such a bad thing as long as you have the fuel valve shut off and drain the bowl under the carburetor before you tarp it. Thx for sharing JC!
good info Boss ,, have plans to get a log splitter in near future ,not decided on gas or electric as yet,, have used both with no real pros or cons of either ,,property to be used on will have power but anywhere use and portability has a place also...I guess I'll have to flip a coin when the time comes....If you have any suggestions please toss them out this way....
Boss beautiful log splitter. I hope it splits many cords of wood. Here's a tip on sale synthetic oil at Walmart, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Castrol and Quaker State in Canada it's $28 for 5 liters. It will be easier to start in the winter and easier on the motor in the summer. Also nothing but premium gas. Hold on you already new this, great review.
Have had this splitter for 3 yrs now. Split about 10 cords with it. The engine is dependable and starts good. The log holding tables are way too small and required major enlargement on both sides. The larger tables also work to protect the engine and hydraulic pump. Only other mod was a ram retraction limiter because I only split wood about 15 inches long. Appreciate the review.
Thanks for sharing as I'm in the market for one. A local farm store has a champion 25 ton model with the same 224cc motor for 799, may have to jump on it.
That's a heckuva splitta -- and a dang good review! The Champion is lighter than the others which makes it easier on the back when maneuvering by hand.
I only split wood the first two years by hand. The conifers aren’t bad. The oak is another story.. LOL. Nothing like a good log splitter.... Glad it has worked out good for you. At a great price. Do you ever stand it up and split? Have a fantastic day Boss..!!
Nice review BossMan. I looked at the Champion and liked what I saw. Biggest thing I was concerned with is the Champion Engine. I just haven't used them so a little skeptical but glad you like it....which is good enough for me!
Boss, You convinced me to go and buy the Champion 27 ton splitter. It is brand new and on the 3rd day I hit the kill switch to take a break and when I tried to pull the rope I could barely pull the cord to start it. It was like it had some kind of compression lock up. Just wondered if this has ever happened to you yet. Changed the oil on it after the first 3 or 4 hours and the oil was full when I checked it.
I've had no issues with mine whatsoever. I don't know much about engines but not being able to turn the engine sounds like one with no oil in it - but you checked that. I hope you find the issue and it's a simple fix.
The ram seems to move pretty quickly. It drives me crazy waiting for the ram to come back if it's really slow. The price isn't too bad either. Some splitters cost double what yours was and do exactly the same thing. Thanks for the run down Boss.
Another great one.Why not change out the table on the drivers side for one like on the other side. Looks like you could even just mount a piece of plate there as it appears to be flat. Thanks JC
good review boss. I do all my splitting with a 5 ton electric , 6 years now . Pretty happy with my quiet rig. The shelf idea is a great one to protect the oil filter etc. :) I made a few mods to my split er and it easily cut the strain and made each split cycle faster and safer. Getting ready for the winter ahead always feels good. thanks for sharing , as always :)
I have the 34 ton Champion and I wish I had bought the 27 ton. The 34 ton is a bit of over kill for me, it's too heavy and hard to move. I think the 27 has a faster cycle time too.
Great review..after 35 years of splitting wood for my wood stove..a masdive heart attack dropped me like a big oak log...so now its time to get a splitter...chamion looks like what im gettin...thanx boss
I've had no issues with this splitter and I work the heck out of it. Sorry to hear about your ticker. Keep on keepin on.
We can always count on a honest down to earth review from you my friend 👍

Well said. I dug it out of the snow the other day after a very long sit and it fired right up. No complaints :-)
The splitter has served me well and I did end up getting a dent in the oil filter but luckily it didn't spring a leak.
Nice one JC! A little treat in the middle of the week too. 😊

Your attitude on the "plastic JUNK" is exactly RIGHT ON! A good buy on an older one in GOOD shape is a BUY!
I have the same splitter and love mine. Due to a bad back I use mine in the vertical position while I'm on my knees.
Wow...what a nice treat! I’m looking for a log splitter too. Thanks for the review Boss.
I have the 20 ton model I bought it 2yrs ago its been awesome it starts great and works awesome

What ever works. Have had a Tractor Supply 22 ton splitter for 12 years and have no issues at all. Works well and paid for itself in the first year
Have the same splitter it's been great I built a protector for the engine components. The operator side I feel doesn't need any protection since I can handle it.
Must be my lucky day cause it’s only Thursday and I got a video from the boss...life is good...thanks JC
Hey boss man I am thinking hard about buying a splitter . Thank you for this update. I have a Champion generator and it works great. HAAAA it is Thursday and you posted a video. Made my day.
Nice tool, great to see it's performance is up to par. Momma and the kids be warm this winter.
Love the review. When I went to price one out, it was $1299 at Home Depot. Amazing they increased the price by nearly 50% in just 3 years!
Not as high as lumber yet :-/
@@thebossoftheswamp The splitter is 1399 now, I'm thinking about grabbing one tomorrow!

Got the same splitter and loving it so far. Splits everything I give it and fires up on demand. Great price and a great product.
I live in a large city and have no use for a log splitter but I now want one! Thx for the early mid week video and great review!
Thanks for your valuable insight and wisdom sir. Ruggedmade makes a nice log lifter kit that bolts on to splitters and you can use the larger table on the other side to protect the hydraulic filter.

Greetings from PEI, Late week treat!!. For my purposes I have a five ton electric, I'm splitting spruce. I do hand split when the weather gets cold.
HAVE I DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN? ITS NOT SUNDAY! IS THIS A NEW VIDEO FROM THE BOSS? YIPPEEEE YIYO YIPPEE KI-A. WAHAHAHAAAA
readin my mind Ruby
He DID say last Sonday he was going to post this vid later in the week.
Awesome splitter man. Have an amazing weekend, Andreas from Off Grid Sweden 🇸🇪
Good review. Thanks. A suggestion - grab a 17 MM socket and flip that small shelf over. You'll be glad you did.
Thanks for the tip!
Thank you.
Can't say that I miss it at all.
Looks like a real nice splitter!
I've had no issues with mine so far. I'll keep an eye on that though. Thanks.
What a nice surprise! A video from JC on Tuesday. I know what the problem was, you miss us. God Bless my friend. Take care
build a table right up flush with the yellow piece. with raised edges or some 2x2 on the edge. looks like im going to get the 27 ton. thanks for the review. happy splitting.
Cool! That's the cat's meow. Thanks for the review.
My Troy Bilt 27 ton splitter uses the Honda GVC engine, pump is UNDER it, HUGE improvement over the layout here
Thank you Boss, I hate when someone reviews a product and haven't even used it yet. I have a Champion generator that I use on my homestead, an older one that I got used and it starts on the first pull almost every time.
I hate that too and don't get me started on the unboxings haha
Boss, have to tried sitting on a 5 gallon bucket with the splitter vertical ? No bending over doing it that way. I move about 10 to 15 logs within reach and split all of them. Then stack, and start over
We do the Same I split sitting on bucket.. Husband brings me wood and stacks it as we go. Team work to make it go fast😊
@@vickylong4803 Yes, sometimes my wife helps me too. It does make things go so much faster. 👍
I prefer to stand than sit and split :-)
Thanks.
I notice the paint still looks like new on the wood hold where the ram is.
Great video JC, thanks for sharing
Thanks for the review Boss !! I'm going to purchase a new splitter sometime before next spring, so this review helps with the decision process.
Thank you JC...😎👍🇺🇸
Great review 👍👍 glad it works well for you. Also glad to see you still have your red shirt
Thanks for sharing as I'm in the market for one. A local farm store has a champion 25 ton model with the same 224cc motor for 799, may have to jump on it.
That sounds like a good price.
Shelf add on is a great idea.
"There she be" captain!
I always enjoy your videos. 🇬🇧
I never cared much for the vertical splitting. I guess it's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.
Nice review BossMan. I looked at the Champion and liked what I saw. Biggest thing I was concerned with is the Champion Engine. I just haven't used them so a little skeptical but glad you like it....which is good enough for me!
So far so good and my generators are running flawlessly too.
Been waiting on this review . Well done . Thank you .
Looks like a great wood splitter for the money!
I got basically the same one it's a county line from tractor supply....its got a nice Honda motor on mine
I have the 34 ton Champion and I wish I had bought the 27 ton. The 34 ton is a bit of over kill for me, it's too heavy and hard to move. I think the 27 has a faster cycle time too.
