FUCK YEAH UNICORN OVERLORD MENTION
But a personal recommendation is also Tactics Ogre. It's story is even more complex.
TO was my intro to the entire genre and is still at the top of my list for tactics games. That said, I haven't gotten around to playing the Reborn version.
Tactics Ogre is just soooo good man.
Tactics ogre goes hard
As for promo on unicorn overlord.
Promo it because vanillaware always go bankrupt making every game and in this case the team paid out of pocket to fund this game because the sega/atlus money ran out.
They're devoted to always releasing a polished game and for the sake of the devs. They should at least break even.
And they're still too stubborn to release it on pc
Holy shit, you’re the biggest creator I’ve seen talk about this game! I just completed platinumed it in about 80 hrs, and loved every second!
Next stop, the trails series.
It depends on how well Garnt can sell it to him
@@Yachii Joey said he'd catch up to Garnt this year, but who knows
If you hype him up too much he's not gonna play it lol
Its so good. Im on cold steel 3
@@ashlamovich6395 yeah like how everyone told him to watch Arcane and he refuses to touch it with a 10 foot pole.
My JRPG series recommendation is Xenoblade Chronicles! All 3 parts are on the switch and they can be played independent of each other(but playing them in order does have its benefits).
Edit: this recommendation isn’t specifically for Joey, but for everyone that’s interested in JRPGs and hasn’t played them yet:)
i dont think he'd like the second game that much.
Sad cause it's the best one @@Timotarius_
@@Timotarius_ Why not? It's my favourite.
@@joannis46678Pacing issues and anime clichés.
I love you.
Read the title and my mind automatically went to sweat onigiri lmao
My dumbass was thinking of Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth..
@@galaxy_kitten95 I would hope not, I have played every LAD besides the zombie one. I finished Infinite Wealth and I just sat there wondering why it felt so lacking. Kiryu's story was good but the Ichiban story and the combat felt underwhelming imo.
@@ThingsYouDontLike well you know, its long thats why people like it
@@attackofthecopyrightbots I was expecting Hundred Heroes.
Dude, your videos are awesome, keep it real

Unicorn Overlord is sitting wrapped on my shelf for when I get time. Excited!
Huge fan of Vanillaware games here. Thanks for mentioning Unicorn Overlord!! This game was a blast to play, and after beating the main story.. I kind of miss it, lol.
Keep up the awesome work and videos Joey love the video
I've been hooked on this game ever since I first saw images of it appear on youtube! Currently playing it at the moment and enjoying every bit of it! So glad to see you are a fan of this game too!
Played this game when it first came out. I was really surprised and impressed by just how fun it was. Glad to see you talking about it, it deserves more attention!
Definitely adding to my to-play list! I love the artwork and can tell it’s had a lot of care put into it! Already was sorta interested but after this, I’m sold! Thanks, Joey! 💖
Oh hell YES!
Unicorn Overlord is absolutely goated! Beautiful art, beautiful music, and so many cool small details that truly makes this game something special.
My man!!! Loved this game, and this unique genre!!
thank you Joey for helpin me discover such a banger
Amazing video Joey of a new tactic Jrpg game out there, fantastic job too.
I was wondering why I haven't heard much more after they announced Unicorn Overlord because I love a lot of Vanillaware games: Dragon Crown, Odin Sphere, Muramasa: The Demon Blade (Odin Sphere was actually published by Atlus in it's first release as well if you weren't aware, same with Dragon Crown. Looks like Muramasa was published by another company which I guess explains why it was shafted not to be released to other systems other than the Vita after the Wii release. T_T I was so upset about that.) So thank you for bringing it to light again.
Need to be released on Steam too.
love the art, i just can't handle the grind.
Without realizing it, my very first JRPG was a PS2 title called Okage. I have never heard of anyone who's played it before, but supposedly it got a port to either the PS3 or PS4, so that's something. It's a comical story of a boy who has his shadow possessed by a shadow king...named Stan. Yes, the most boring, non-threatening name ever, lol. I forget why Stan possessed him but the whole adventure, I believe, is about finding a way for Ari (the main character) to break the curse of Stan. But Stan is not much of a threat to Ari and is usually mocked by the other characters.
I never did finish the game, though. The final area is a misty labyrinth in a library...and with random encounters. I clearly needed to grind more levels before going in because I died before I ever found my way out to the main boss. I vaguely remember viewing a map of how to get out and seeing just how big the area was, then noping the hell out of finishing it 😂. If it's at least on PS4 (doubt it's on PS5), maybe I'll give it a shot again. Supposedly, they corrected the most egregious issue with the game, no way to skip the VERY long talking segments! Like, if you died, you had to listen to the pre-fight character banter all over again. You could press X and rush through it, but not skip it. That too made the final dungeon a slog.
IMO, the smaller, mid-budget JRPGs are the best the genre offers nowadays. One of my favourite developers is Nihon Falcom. I've put probably around or close to a thousand hours into the Trails and Ys series over the last decade. The Cold Steel games has the best turn-based combat system I've ever played. Great evolution of traditional turn based battles with a bit of tactical elements because you can move characters around the battlefield and positioning is sometimes essential to surviving boss fights. And the best thing is trash mob battles are quick, so the combat never feels boring and tedious.
Does Coldsteel have major gameplay changes? Still at my 5th game (Azure) and so far there's just little things added each game.
@@ShotterGames Falcom seems to prefer iterative evolution rather than making giant overhauls. The combat is very similar, but has a different feel because the Cold Steel games are 100% 3D with a free camera. The battlefields also aren't grid based anymore so movement is more free.
The combat changes and evolves with all 4 Cold Steel games and Trails into Reverie. It's mostly with new mechanics added to what is already there, but one of the mechanics in the 2nd game was removed for the future games.
TLDR: The combat is very similar, so you should do fine if you are familiar with the Sky or Crossbell games.
@@ShotterGames Yesn't. The switch to 3d removed the grid but it honestly doesn't change too much and It is still has the craft and quartz mechanic. However starting with cold steel Quartz got simplified by a lot and balancing of crafts got change a lot that instead of arts being generally stronger you start to user much more crafts since they got stronger instead. Besides that Cold steel will introduce a new special combat section that plays bit different from usual combat but can't get too much into it since it's big spoilers. I guess if you want drastic change you have to wait till Trails of daybreak since only there did they start to introduce a hybrid turn base/action base system but still usually only for mobs and for bosses it's still just turn based.
Unicorn Overlord caught my curiosity from a random short I saw, and I decided to pick it up. Good to see more info on my almost blind purchase. :D
finalyyy someone taking about it
It’s sooooo good!!!
Hell yeah!!! Unicorn overlord was so much fun!
I am currently playing 13 Sentinels and was itching for games at this level, so glad you recommended another one to me
Unicorn Overlord glazing makes me happy now if only it would come to PC
Unfortunately, they seem to be a really small team with a barely big enough budget, so a PC release just isn't possible at this time. I have a PS5, but I honestly prefer playing such games on my PC.
@yashasvirallabandi9070 Also Vanillaware is not too fond of mods in their games so that's another reason why they opt out on putting their games on PC
Niceee just caught the upload! Woo!
Glad to see Vanillaware getting more love from you, Joey! They've been one of my favorite developers ever since I picked up Muramasa for the Wii way back then.
Love tactics games, love Vanillaware games. But man, do I wish they were longer, or weren't so against making sequels to their existing properties. These games are so good I just want more of them all the time!
Great game. Glad that you talked about it and hope more people pick it up.
Was looking at unicorn overlord last night , somehow felt this would be about it, seems really good and heavily slept on
I also love how it has a demo to try it out
Glad Joey give update of what's he been up to.
Yeah love JRPGs...gotta give these a try now :D Thanks Joey
Been thinking about buying this so it's cool to see a video on it
Aye! Unicorn Overlord! I love that game! Played it when it came out, it was amazing.
Sounds cool, I might check it out.
So fast i cant even see the comment that came before me
Is this just a clever way of saying “first”?
@@thevictoryoverhimself7298 🤓👆
Why did the comments come?
Ha! I guessed it before you said it. I've been a big vanillaware fan with odin sphere being my favourite. Almost finished Unicorn overlord now and I'm 80 hours in ^_^
More videos like this please
i definitely support more of joey talking about video games
The whole squad based unit system moving on the overworld in real time gave me flashbacks of yu-gi-oh The Falsebound Kingdom, the most non-yu-gi-oh yu-gi-oh game ever.
Godaaman that megaman edit😂
I bought this game and I'm so excited to play it! I've been interested in it since the various trailers premiered at game presentations.
now time to do a playthrough
I knew you'll mention this somehow, especially since you said you love 13 Sentinels so much on TT.
Im pretty close to broke right now, but I played the demo a couple months back and absolutely loved it. I look forward to getting to play the game in full as soon as possible
I mean, if it becomes available on PC, i'll try it?
Honestly it's the same with 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, great game but unable to be played by pc gamers who does not have a PS4/5 or Switch. It's just sad. :(
Read title and saw "ATLUS" in the thumbnail, I know what game this is gonna be... And it's sick. This is the only game I've ever gonna a whole new system for.
This makes me want to download it......the way joey describe the game make my adreneline going
Great video! Please make more gaming videos 🙏
The Legend of Heroes: Trails. Better than any anime I’ve ever watched. It feels like an anime, yet it is a video game. You get to explore the world, talk to characters, read the text at your own leisure-just like you do in manga-listen to all the voice acting, battle when you want, hear fantastic music throughout the series, and most impressive above it all, it has the best worldbuilding of any video game; and it’s not even close.
Please Joey. As a JRPG fanatic you must. You owe it to yourself!
He did mention he was thinking about playing the series on an episode of Trash Taste but that was a while ago and we never got an update. Complately agree with your description of the series , best I've ever played.
I refuse to play that game because of the translation shenanigans.
@@Arassar thats a pretty stupid reason
I played through cold steel 1, 2 and 3, but just couldn't finish 4.... it drags on for so long....
I am just so glad I waited a couple months to get a physical copy. Now I need to play/finish the game and will come back to watch the video.
Just give me a couple years, ok?
Will definitely have to check this out after I finish Okami and the Elden Ring DLC
All I know about Vanillaware is the big Booba Witch and their Beautiful Background art and art style/character designs
Omg it's like FF Tactics I love it already!!!!
The gaming man
Ah, it was on my to play list for awhile but I completely forgot about it. Perfect time for a reminder I guess. Also, you want a jrpg-ish roguelike card strategy game with a surprising amount of team building, I recommend Chrono Ark. The story is amazing and the art is too.
I remember watching my dad and his buddy play Princess Crown when I was single digits in age. Since then, I've had a special love towards vanillaware games.
My Man.
Finally someone talks about what a great game this is!!!!
I remember seeing a few fire emblem creators play or talk about unicorn overlord, especially around the time the demo dropped, but good to see more people talking about it
The moment I read “Nobody is talking about”
I knew it was hip- I mean Joey
Fantastic game. Strongly recommend it if you like building teams in your RPG's. There are so many different solutions to the problems the game presents, you can go absolutely wild with challenge runs even after you beat the game.
This is the game that made me change my mind about selling my switch.
Unicorn Overlord? Sounds like something I would play. I'll give it a try.
Muscle mommies are my favorite fantasy race, thank you Joey
I see that Promise Ring record, my guy never misses.
Ironically I was in the middle of playing Unicorn Overlord. The moment I heard him say the Title name I popped off. I love this game glad to see it talked about!
well glad to know more about it now i just need it to go on sale
dont f´´´´´g forget the trails or tales series ! JESUS
i think one of my favorite rpg game is limbus company. it is a strategy "gacha" game. it is a game i highly recommend.
My Mann!
Unicorn overlord is a huge hitt and all the talk in turbase strategy circles
Theyve been talking about JRPGs on TT for the past few months, maybe I'll check some out
Don't know if Joey played the best jrpg of all time, the Suikoden series. But the successor of the series finally came out recently! Eiyuden Chronicles is amazing. These series also let you recruits characters, 100+ characters in fact. You start off as a nobody and eventually the more you recruit, your party grows into a small town, then a city, then a country. And then go to war with everyone of them! Every characters have their place and role in your country and army
I haven't gotten around to Unicorn Overlord yet, but I've loved Vanillaware for years. You can almost always guarantee a quality time from them.
Damn, was really hoping it was one I didn’t know about lmao
Getting this video on my feed when I was playing 13 Sentinels is crazy.
This is an updated version of the classic Oger Battle from super Nintendo if you ask me
I won't lie I was hoping for a new game recommendation, But Unicorn Overlord was an amazing experience :D
ooh my coworker would love this game. Will send him this link to check out.
It feels like it was yesterday that Joey condemned the whole production of a certain anime movie because of a disgustingly abhorrent producer and now games.
I plan to finally start Unicorn Overlord soon. I played the demo and it definitely got me hooked since I'm also a huge Fire Emblem fan for the tactical/strategy gameplay. I didn't had time to play it before when it was released because I was so focused on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and even Stellar Blade
I played the demo for almost 4 - 5 hours immediately pre-order my copy in my local game store
The part about building units of characters sounds like a vastly improved version of The Last Remnant, which got rather mediocre reviews on release (in my memory, anyway) but was one of my favorite JRPGs at the time. I hadn't heard about Unicorn Overlord before but I'll definitely have to give it a go.
Joey after u were the one who made me get a copy of 13 sentienls after u mention it numerous videos lol
I got it and completed it. Truly loved the story, thanks for the recommendation
Got unicorn overlord after hearing it is released by altus had to get it.
I am almost done and will recommend eiyuuden the devs who originally handled suikoden.
Already playing my guy lmao!
You should definitely try Trails.
MORE GAMES!
YEAH BOY!!! VanillaWare let's goooooooo
This activates my neurons o_o definitely will check it out sometime.
ALSO!! if you guys like this type of game, I HIGHLY recommend checking out the "Valkyria Chronicles" series. It's like fire emblem with guns and tanks.
oh yeah dude sick I played that. very cool game
Anything made by Vanillaware is sure to be a banger. Dragon's Crown is one of my favorites of all time
Brother, Unicorn Overloard sold very well. It def got a bit overshadowed though due to when it came out
Yes its Good, i have the collector’s edition ✨
I completely agree. Fire Emblem was the first game that really made me fall in love in tactical JRPG. Unicorn Overlord was fantastic and the next game that made me really excited after that. Strongly recommend!
I was interested in this game because of Vanillaware too (loved Muramasa) . But for some reason all physical copies are sold out near me in Australia. Might have to grab it digitally after your review
Yes I played the demo and I wanna get it soon!!
