Charli, I know nothing about design or e-commerce but am blown away by the content and presentation of this video. From the (realistic) time scales to the effort and detail that goes into executing a concept well, your video captures so many nuggets that stimulate thought and further investigation. Thank you and best wishes for your future projects.
There's an episode of the Netflix docu series "Abstract" about Jonathan Hoefler and his process for Typeface Design (season 2 last episode) and it's suuuuper interesting, it also goes over some of the points you do in your video. Great content! V useful. Also the font looks great!
this series and this episode is really awesome. In design school I watched that on my own time and it really fueled my interest for typography in class
Thank you so much, i thought about developing my font further and have been looking for such video, you cover everything and explained things to tackle on the journey of creating a font, thank you so much for this❤❤❤
I also took Teela’s class! I took the PC version, but just bought a Mac so now I’m going to be learning Glyphs. I just listed my first font on my website yesterday and can’t wait to make my next.
Thanks for sharing the process with us Charli. Your font came out really nice! Teela’s font-making course has been on one of my back burners for a couple of years now. Congrats on finishing and launching!
I'm considering taking Teela's course. I have no design background at all so was wondering about how many hours total do you think it took to complete your font. Thank you for sharing.
Great job on making your first font! I find myself much more interested in how you built a list where you made 45 sales in the span of 5 days. How did you do that?
Extremely interesting and informative. Found you by chance. The font looks great. Also really appreciate that you don't have ads in your videos. Great option to go with Patreon instead. All the best.
I like to find fonts on creative market - but i purchase from the designers website usually. As a designer and graphic artist I usually. Recommend this to clients as well.
Yay! So happy to see you post about the font making process, I'm in the middle of making my first one as well? An elegant serif font. I'm using Fontself Maker which I think is much cheaper and easier to use (Glyphs looks a little bit scary haha). It's basically a plugin for either Illustrator or Photoshop. I was able to get both for a bundle price awhile back, super worth it especially to dabble in my first font. Really hope you make a script font next!
Super video. I am illustrating a book and the author noticed my handwriting on the notes for the illustrations ans asked me to actually hand write the title and some other elements within the book. I am also trying to learn ConvertKit to build an email list but I am having some trouble with the technology. It’s all me, though. Not the program. Any advice would be very welcome. 😊
That’s so funny, I also purchased Teela’s font course in 2017 as well and I’m just now finally getting around to making it! I’m only at the beginning though.
What would be the appropriate approach towards your customers that purchased your fonts earlier and now you are after releasing an update with more glyphs?
Hi Charli, idk it will be read or not, but i hope you read it.. i have some questions related the topic you shared here: 1. If i didn't get license for my font, then i sell it, how it will be effected to me and my font? 2. What board size for procreate to create font?
a license isn't something you 'get' for something you design yourself. it's something you create! You can find license templates online to document what kind of usage you're allowing with your product. If you don't consider what usage you'll allow, you're selling yourself short and leaving a lot of money on the table! board size in procreate doesn't matter at all. you're going to be creating vectors in illustrator later anyway. the bigger the better i'd say 🤷🏻♀️
Efficient explanation of your font creation 🔥👌🏽! Even though it took time to create it. Do you think is a must to get glyph to produce fonts? I would like one day, if you could to explain the confusion of licensing about fonts. By video or your podcast "design for life" , by the way, it's great! I wish I discovered much earlier on and not this week. Good luck! 🙏🏽
theres lots of different software to create fonts! I just chose Glyphs because it's what the course instructor uses. How can I help with font licensing? What's confusing you? let me know and I can try to explain!
The terms of using them. For instance, 100% free, free por personal use, for comercial or business propurses (social media counts as business or personal use). What if a designer buy a font. Can she/he allows to their clients to use them? Or it's only use for the designer? Or it is the clients that they have to buy the font? At the moment, I am researching on that. Simply I am confusing, in case anyone can be penalise, have issues or get in some kind of trouble. I don't know like Shepherd Fairey with his "Hope" campaign to put an example of trouble. Thank Charlie! 🙏🏽
Just out of curiosity, is there a particular reason why you chose Astropad instead of Sidecar (Apple's 'official' solution?) Also great work and thanks for all the videos!
Hey Hi there, recently started following you and so amazed by your work. Just seen one of your video on Design System in Figma solike can you make a video on whole process of creating or could you share the resources. Love from Nepal :)
Awesome! If you didn't already watched, I will recommend you the Abstract episode with Johnatan Hoefler on Netflix, he is a typography designer. I understood all the work that need to be put to create a new font
What if i make and sell a font to a dozen people and and then i happen to see it all over the Internet few years later. Given that some fonts are very similar and then created to outlines, my question is how can I be sure thats my font and how can I take action of people stealing my fonts. I feel this will be a very long journey clamping everyone down stealing my work.
@@charlimarieTV oh for sure I won't stop. Do you have any insight if for example, someone used a glyph or two letters joined/stylised together which you know you created and haven't seen it elshwere on any other font. How would you tackle that? The end user coukd typically say that they made it and it just so happen to match my style lol
I hate to be that guy but someone has to explain typeface vs font so here goes... Typeface - overall style of lettering where as Font - variation of a font. I.e: bold, italic, regular, Etc. That being said this is awesome. I like your explanations and rationale.
@CharliMarieTV, is there any chance I could hire you to make a font for me? You can sell it afterwards provided I can use it. It's an engineering type text that a friend of mine writes in, and I'd like to gift him his own font.
Sadly Glyphs is Mac only. And apparently their reasoning is "type is a Mac only business", which is like saying designing is a Mac only business. Baffling
I’m sure you could find a font software for a different operating system just by googling! :) the software mention was just one small piece of this video

thanks for watching Maria!
Thanks for sharing the process with us Charli. Your font came out really nice! Teela’s font-making course has been on one of my back burners for a couple of years now. Congrats on finishing and launching!
I hope this video gives you the motivation to get back into the course and finish your own font Karen! I'd love to see it! :D
Charli, you are a very impressive and inspiring designer! Well done and congratulations on your font. Goodness, you are a hard worker.
thanks so much, that's so kind :)
Never knew it took so long to create a font but it paid off. Great font and super video!
Thank you for all the info, Its been helpful working on my fonts, I will be watching this video again!

How did you do that?
today i saw your 2 years ago video and now i am your fan and subscriber.
Hi Charli! Any quick tips on doing a font for non-English? (Using an alphabet that doesn't have r, u, p, q, f, v and has more accent marks on vowels)
Extremely interesting and informative. Found you by chance. The font looks great. Also really appreciate that you don't have ads in your videos. Great option to go with Patreon instead. All the best.

Loved this! You should make a video showing your favorite fonts/fonts designers ✨
Great idea! I did a video like that yeeeeeeears ago it'd be fun to make an update :)
I’d love a video on that topic too.
Great video miss
Thank you Charlie, lots of valuable info that I was looking for!
Thank you Charlie Marie! This is so interesting and I would love to try taking Tesla’s course!

Dope!! I’ve wanted to make one for so long!
do it Jason! It was such a fun experience 🙌
I appreciate all your educational value as a Creative. Yuh not even know.

how do you import your fonts that you created in illustrator over to Glyphs?

Did you check out my pdf guide to cataloging your website and creating a design system from it? charlimarie.com/design-systems
Ahhhh, I've been looking forward to watching this video; even made tea!!
Yay! Enjoy your tea :)
@@charlimarieTV Hehe, enjoyed both the tea and the video.
Nice work!!
thanks!
Hello, can you say how to check a font which i have created is not done by other, means how to check my font already exists or not?
@CharliMarieTV : Great video, Charli. Love your channel. Side note: Your doppelganger is English actress Lily James. You are identical twins!
Thanks for sharing!
thanks for watching! :)
I need to commision simple font. Do you give quotation for the price?

very interesting miss
I want to sell my handritten fonts ...plzz suggest
Does it make good money? I just wat to know if I will recover all those expensive apps as well classes that I have to take.
it depends! definitely not guaranteed. it's not a 'passive income'. you have to put in the work to sell it.
Thanks 🙏

Don’t let that hold you back from creating! You can take legal action if you like but it probably wouldn’t be worth it.

You didn’t have to really tho did you! Haha. Even in your explanation you used font the same way I did “variation of a font”.

I don't! I used Astropad to essentially make my ipad into a graphics tablet (like a Wacom)

No tutorial just humble bragging, yikes

wasted time because I don't use a MAC. would have been good to add to the title.
