    glad this video helped your falllonyourbuttasana! with the "chatauranga arms", what i mean is to get very low in preparation for the pose, bend the elbows 90 degrees as you are sitting down on the arms. if this pose is intimidating, keep the arms that bent. but then you will be very to the ground. so...once your feet are off the floor, straightening the arms will give you the lift and core stability for the final posture.

    (a) lots of hamstring stretches
    (b) don't think about straightening the leg by pushing at the knee, but rather by pulling the heels from the hips
    (d) you can do this with bent knees ;)

    Hi Shana, I always love your videos and get so much from them. My question is about the part of Bhujepidasana (the way Ashtangis do) between the crossed leg balance and firefly, where you put your head near the ground. Do you practice that? I could use your insight with that piece of it. Thx. Sue

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  2 года назад

      Hi Sue! Though everyone thinks I'm an Ashtangi, and though I have taught workshops at many Ashtanga studios around the globe, I'm actually not an Ashtangi. 😬 I don't practice that version, but do you have specific questions about it? Maybe I will work on it and make a video for you!

      this one, crow (yoga crow arm balance instruction - shana meyerson of yogathletica for yogaearth terraflow), and eka pada koundinyasana (yoga arm balance split - eka pada koundinyasana 2 with shana meyerson YOGAthletica).

I have a question: you say to use chaturanga arms, but do you then straighten them in bhujapidansana as you do in titibasana? It's hard to see what you're doing from that angle. Thanks.

      sorry i didn't reply to the first comment...i didn't see it! some great shoulder openers are eagle (garudasana) arms and cow face (gumukhasana) arms. backbends and twists are great, too, for opening the spine.
      remember on this one, getting the shoulders under the knees is ideal and makes the pose easier. but as long as your knees are at least above your elbows, you can still do this pose. :)

      hey jim! i have that in some of my vimeo videos, but haven't made that for youtube. will consider it! mostly it is a function of open hips and achilles tendons...and good knees!
      you may want to consider my vimeo, as it is full-length classes that prepare you in all aspects for any posture.
      the one-off tutorials i do here on youtube generally assume an all-around practice that prepares you for the flexibility, balance and strength elements required for accessibility.
      try it! your entire practice will change!

      thanks!
      if you really want to expand your practice, i recommend my full length-classes on vimeo: vimeo.com/ondemand/yogathletica
      doing one-off poses is great, but the classes build the flexibility and strength to get you into all these things i show on youtube.
      as to this pose...most likely the tightness is in your hamstrings, rather than your shoulders. or maybe both! i have all sorts of leg stretches on my legs playlist: ruclips.net/video/puMWvd6kN8M/видео.html
      maybe start with paschimottanasana: ruclips.net/video/5v9xN7LX1lI/видео.html
      more than anything, keep working this one if this one is your goal. it comes in time. :)

    Hey Shana,
    Love all your videos. I have the hardest time getting my leg over my shoulder in almost every pose. Im a flexible, semi strong yogini and can't figure out how to get my shoulder snuggled in for this pose or eka pada sirasana. I feel so close but I'm missing something. Also this is pretty intense on the wrist and I have tendinitis, any suggestion to help keep them safe?

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  9 лет назад +2

      hi, Cara Winget. thanks for your note and so awesome to hear that you are enjoying the videos. :)
      for getting the leg over your shoulder, a couple questions:
      1. can you do it when sitting down (such as in astavakrasana, ruclips.net/video/meizGcM4MrE/видео.html)? or is it hard there, too?
      2. you tried the thing with using the webby part of your hand for leverage to squish you in? that really helps?
      if the answer to (1) is no and (2) is yes, then you may want to work on your hip openers (ruclips.net/video/DSzyn87J5-I/видео.html) to help create flexibility to get lower down in there.
      also, be sure you are rounding your spine when snuggling in. we don't round our spines often in yoga, but this is one place that we do. once you get your shoulder way under there, then the spine can start to elongate again. that will not only help the spine, but give you more leverage to lift the leg, as well.
      with the wrists, that's a bit of a harder one.
      general rule is to turn your hands outwards a little (and make sure they never turn in!), using the direction of the middle finger as your gauge. in some other poses, you can come up onto fist knuckles to neutralize the wrist, but it wouldn't really work in this pose.
      the wrist discomfort is something a lot of people need to work through to overcome.
      we don't extend our wrists very often in life, so it's a weird action already. now add your whole body weight on top of it and therein lies the problem.
      generally, over time the pain will go away...if it's something you can work through without excessive or unbearable pain, or the chance of actual injury, it may be worth it.
      hope that helps! :)

      and forward bends: ruclips.net/video/5v9xN7LX1lI/видео.html
      Overall...I recommend that you have a strong and comprehensive practice.

    • @YOGAthletica

      hi windyrain, as a beginner, i would say the best place to start is with sun salutations. you can see my video (beginning yoga sun salutation instruction - shana meyerson YOGAthletica) to help. salutations are great for building arm strength, spinal and shoulder opening, core engagement, and leg lengthening/stretching.
      arm balances and inversions are really fun, but they are great after you've mastered the basics.
      as to crow...did you see my crow video (yoga crow arm balance instruction - shana meyerson of yogathletica for yogaearth terraflow)? that is the most fundamental of arm balances and a great first one to master.

    • @YOGAthletica
      @YOGAthletica  9 лет назад

      +Dora Lazi it's true that we all have natural body proportions that will make some poses easy and others hard...i have long legs and short torso, so it makes sense that it would be naturally easier for me.
      the good news about shorter legs in proportion to your upper body is that they are easier to lift. your longer torso brings you higher in the air and shorter legs don't have as far to travel to get off the floor.
      now, to do this pose, you don't actually have to get your shoulders behind your legs. you just have to at least get your legs above your elbows.
      also...you don't have to give up on the pose! often poses will come if you just keep trying and trying. i literally have poses that i worked on every day for YEARS before i got them. never give up. you can do it. maybe today, maybe next week, maybe in ten years. but you can do it!
      meantime, enjoy trying. :)

      +Ziad Xiad try doing it with blocks behind your feet...it makes it easier to "reach the ground" so to speak...i just posted a photo of a student doing that on my yogathletica instagram account...

      awesome! ❤️ in all yoga traditions we call it titibhasana in America. but different countries may approach the spelling differently. 🙏

      sorry! i have tried my best to fix the sound in later videos...it's hard, as my camera has no external mike connection and empty rooms with wood floors tend to echo. sorry!

      I am so sorry about the sound! I have tried two new mics solutions for my newest videos and have struggled against the echo always. I do what I can. 🙏

      Hi again. I appreciate your effort concerning the sound. However, furniture and some textures would help a lot I think. Greetings from Sweden🇸🇪

      This was one of my first videos. Since then, I started covering my floor with mats and blankets to tamp some of the echo. I have also switched both my cameras (twice) and mics (twice). There is no easy solution. :/
