When Penny told Charlie that wasn't her boat, she was adamant about having no knowledge of that boat. And she's an intelligent business woman. She'd know what's hers and what's not. And her face spoke volumes.
Pretty impressive to have such an epic and satisfying season premiere after one of the best finales for season 3. Bringing all the characters together, if just for a moment, to have them split. Such good writing. Love your intrigue and enthusiasm Elie! Season 4 may have less episodes, but it's a banger.
Evageline Lily and Jorge Garcia in the audio commentary in this episode described this moment when the group split up as a divorce. Charlie's death really solidfied people's motivation especially Hugo. Did you see Jack's face when he said he was not listening to him and instead listening to Charlie. It penetrated.
"The Beginning of The End" is what Ben called contacting Naomi's freighter...also the name of this episode...also when the writers were able to begin finishing the story.
For the first time in Elie's Lost Reaction history did we EVOR see Elie scream so loud!! I got "Normies" flashbacks watching this because Nikki and Rana screamed so loud at that same scene. LOL 😂🤣
This single episode spawned soooo many questions. When do the Oceanic Six actually get off the island? How does Hurley, Jack, and Kate get off when they are separated? Who are the other 3 survivors who got rescued? What causes Jack to spiral into the crazy persona we saw at the end of season 3? Are the rescuers who they say that are? and many more questions. The first time I saw season 4, it was my least favorite season. However, upon rewatching it several times, it's now my second favorite.
I have a theory about "Dave". Remember that Libby told Desmond (when they met by chance b4 the island) that she wanted to give him her husband's sailboat for his race? When Desmond asked about him she said that her husband was very sick and he died. He said he was so sorry and asked what his name was and she said "David". Dave is short for "David". What if his illness was mental illness and he "deleted" himself? Okay...here's what I'm theorizing... Hurley met "Dave" in the mental institution when Libby was a patient there for what could have been a breakdown after a very traumatizing loss. When Hurley runs into Dave again, it's on the Island after he starts hanging out with Libby. Could it be that he's seeing Libby's dead husband 'cause he's hanging around her? Is that why Hurley only ran into him when she was around? Remember on the island that Dave tried to convince Hurley that they were in a dream and had to jump off that cliff to "wake up" and Dave proceeded to do so, but Libby was able to talk Hurley down. Imagine if that was Libby's David that Hurley is seeing and the "We're in a dream and none of this is real and we need to wake up" is what had been wrong with him, but she hasn't been able to talk HIM down and he "jumped"? That could have been traumatizing enough to cause her to have a mental break and spend time in the mental institution. I've never thought of that "David/Dave" connection before and Hurley seeing him has always confused me. Like, what if Hurley never did hallucinate? I went back and checked the episode when Libby told Desmond her husband's name after watching your reaction to this episode to see if my memory was right that she said it was "David" cause I'm trying to better understand Hurley's experiences. I was excited when she DID say that name! What do you guys think? Do you think Libby's David could be Hurley's "Dave"? If I'm a total idiot and way off, please be gentle in telling me. 😅
As far as the discourse from these episodes (and the rest) there were multiple lost message boards that people would stay on for hours discussing theories. No joke, it was a legit cultural phenomenon

This can happen in relatively simple cases or it can happen on a grand scale, such as speculation that all the characters died in the crash and that the entire series takes place in some kind of spiritual purgatory. There's nothing in the fact pattern to suggest this, but many reactors mistakenly come to this conclusion, denying every fact along the way. This is not a "spoiler". It's as if you had come to the conclusion that Hurley was really an elderly woman who was using a magic spell to make everyone believe her appearance was as we see it on our screens. I wasn't sure what you were upset about with "why didn't Kate say something about Naomi." She said all she could say -- she died, and she covered for them. Kate had no further information that would have added to the dialogue. It was a dark scene so in case you couldn't see the split: Team Locke was Hurley, Claire, Sawyer, Rousseau, Alex, Karl, Ben and several unnamed 815 survivors. Team Jack was Kate, Sayid, Desmond, Juliet, Sun, Jin, Rose, Bernard, and the rest of the unnamed 815 survivors. This is the notorious short season, so if you took a day off here or there, I wouldn't blame you.
Miscommunication? Penny said that it wasn't her boat. That is pretty easy to understand. I think Penny would know if she hired a boat or not. Okay, flashforward Elie came in and cleared things up. Also, Desmond gets flashes. He doesn't see the whole picture. Desmond thinks he saw Claire and Aaron get on a helicopter and leave the Island. But he could still be wrong. He thought Charlie would die as soon as he got into the Looking Glass, but that played out differently than he imagined. There is room for error in his interpretation of what he sees. Also, Mikhail got exploded in the Season 3 finale. He can survive a lot, but not that.
This is a great season, no filler. Several top episodes. You’re going to spend a bit of it finding out who are the 6, and tracking their movements across the island to the point they leave. You already know 3 of them, and they’re already split into 2 groups.
That’s because he’s a dummy.. the show just told us.. SHOWED us that Locke was right and Jack was wrong.. to the point where Jack wanted to kill himself.. and this immature clown still doesn’t get it

Locke says he always did what was in the best interest of everyone. Small correction. What he thought was in the best interest of everyone in my opinion. And so he did what Kate did by killing Wayne. She thought of her mother, she decided for her mother without asking her opinion. Locke thought of the survivors, he decided for the survivors without asking their opinion. I don't see why he deserves more leniency than her, when he made this mistake several times and she only once. But hey, people are free to have their own opinions. Charlie is dead. So Hurley sees ghosts ? It can't be just in his head since the other patient sees it too. Sometimes they say that people in these kinds of centers have a different approach to reality. Maybe that's the case for this patient, for Hurley, who are able to see what others can't. In that, they are special.

@mcbekon9019 I love lost. Probably my favourite show ever but Fringe is close second lol. It's brilliant and rarely dips and the acting is top tier. Then a couple of years ago I watched the Leftovers and the top 3 changes between all three of those shows constantly haha
The Fringe series is also one of my favorite series. I feel nostalgic for the time when I watched that series. It's a pity there are few such series now, if there are any at all
If Hurley... the most wholesome & fair of them all... the audience insert... apologizes for going with Locke, saying that he should've stayed with Jack... Then that speaks volumes to me. Locke's choices are not good ones. He can be both right about the island *and* wrong in how he behaves. He keeps things lively though.
I said I'd let you know about the freeze frame if you don't get it in this episode, but hadn't realized that you would potentially watch this episode before you read that comment. So, I'm going to slow walk this...watch the interrogation room scene again. When Charlie presses his hand against the glass, just before the glass explodes and water floods the room, you can see that there is a message written on his hand. It is a three word message, but it isn't "Not Penny's Boat" this time.
Matthew Abbadon. The internet was going crazy the day after this episode due the word Abbadon. It can mean `the destroying angel" or "a place of destruction".
There was also something else at the time that was cause people to theorize but I don't remember why... Hurley said he saw Charlie's ghost by the Ho Hos (if you live outside North America, Ho Hos are chocolate cake things) and during the game of HORSE, they only made it to H-O before Jack stormed off. So there was something about the letters "H-O" that had the armchair theorists going nutty but I cannot remember for the life of me what it related to.

@@Capo_Renzo Yep, that is an astute position and noticed the same. It's the writing that creates that energy to choose sides with characters. LOST is not a sport but in the end it will sort itself out.
It's only poor writing when you don't agree. Not sure how it's poor when you know what happened to Hurley with Locke. It is possible for Locke to be right in believing in the island *and* wrong in the ways he goes about things. Those can both be true. SPOILER I mean, you know he's amenable to coercion. How do you reconcile what you know? He's being used, misled. You know this. So what is Locke right about besides the general overview? Is that carte blanche to do whatever he wants? To deceive and manipulate? Locke has a path... even though it's frustratiing. And his path is mostly failure. His failure is important for others success. It's his fate to do the wrong things... so everything happens as it always did. Jack wasn't wrong. They were meant to leave the island. If he didnt make that call... the rest wouldn't happen as it was already meant to. All those things, whether I like them or not, are the steps to the end. Just like Freighter was supposed to come, etc... But it not bad writing for Hurley to regret going with Locke... after how Locke used him.

Not that this is a big deal AT ALL, but this just confuses me, (also for some reason I see other reactors do this as well) - when you see the final black out with the LOST text, that is OBVIOUSLY the end of the episode. But for some reason you don’t seem to notice until you see the credits 5 seconds after. LOL Like obviously not a big deal at all but I’m just curious, are you not seeing the LOST title with the “boom” sound effect? That means the episode is over lol. It’s just so weird because I see a lot of other reactors not realize that that means the episode is over and then when they see the credits, they’re like “oh man that’s the end of the episode?” Just confuses the hell out of me haha

That's interesting point of view, I was also thinking about it - most LOST fans watched it when it was aired, so it is logical, that they are older than Elie for 2 decades. Elie, props - you made one decision and got so many oldies ;) (me including).
I love John's faith. He never waivers from what he believes is right. Good. Not standing up for his methods, necessarily. I just respect his fighting for the cause he believes in. I personally had to kinda study him. That's a deep and complicated character. SEASON FOUR!!! 🎉❤💃 Just a note... this season, try not to think of other issues while you're watching a particular scene. (31:30 Charlie's message..yelling "They need you") Concentrate on only one thing at a time. Or you're sure to miss pieces. Ones that could be crucial. 👍
Rose gets on my nerves here. Flipped on John pretty quick after being cool and having a nice island healing bond. After Jack was about to blow his brains out, she ignores it and it’s basically screw John. I get backing Jack, he did save her life. But it’s weird how she just flipped on John when she knows that the island is a special place and doesn’t want to leave anyway.
I don't know... she just watched Locke murder an unarmed woman, in the back. And shoot the gun and threaten Jack. (So the gun was loaded just awhile ago.) So she knows what drove Jack to it. She's always been more team Jack. And she's right... Locke is a murderer. As are quite a few there. Does only Locke get to kill for his reasons? Locke killed coldly... at least Jack's attempt was driven heatedly (Boone, the sub, Naomi). In my book, Rose & Bernard are the best inner compass on the island.

The parachutist at the end of this episode, Jeremy Davies who plays Daniel Faraday, has been in several movies and shows. However, I immediately recognized him when I saw his name credit appear in the video game God of War, where he voiced Baldur, one of the gods that appear in flesh form early in the game when he comes knocking on Kratos door. Even the character design appears to have been taken from the actual appearance of Jeremy Davies.
After everything you've seen, you still think Locke is a bad guy and not be trusted. My God. It's like you're watching a completely different show than the rest of us. And the boat doesn't belong to Penny. It was never up for debate with the audience. For the viwersr, we know that Jack is wrong and Locke and Ben are right. After two flashforwards it's clear as day.
I think it may be due to a different generations view point. I can’t remember anyone seeing Locke as a threat or having bad intentions back when this first aired. It may be that the generation today has become more skeptical and suspicious of a persons intentions.
@@nickstark8640 I watched this when it first aired and I've watched the show dozens of time, even contributing to Lostpedia as that site was being written. Trust me, lots of people were fed up with Locke trying to sabotage them from getting off the island over and over again and manipulating Sawyer into murder. We definitely thought at this point that Locke was heading down a dark path, maybe not villain but certainly not good ... that being said, I don't want to say how opinions of Locke did or did not change beyond this episode because I don't want to spoil things for Elie. But at this point, a LOT of people were not on board with Locke. Especially considering in flashforward, Hurley says "sorry i went with Locke," which implies Locke is on the wrong path.

When Locke killed Naomi, he was following instructions as well. Since you have seen this series before, you know who Naomi was associated with. You also said Locke was continually sabotaging their ability to leave the Island as something negative. Didn’t we just see Jack admit they never should have left the Island?

I wasn't sure what you were upset about with "why didn't Kate say something about Naomi." She said all she could say -- she died, and she covered for them. Kate had no further information that would have added to the dialogue.

Team Jack was Kate, Sayid, Desmond, Juliet, Sun, Jin, Rose, Bernard, and the rest of the unnamed 815 survivors.
This is the notorious short season, so if you took a day off here or there, I wouldn't blame you.
Miscommunication? Penny said that it wasn't her boat. That is pretty easy to understand. I think Penny would know if she hired a boat or not.
Okay, flashforward Elie came in and cleared things up.
Also, Desmond gets flashes. He doesn't see the whole picture. Desmond thinks he saw Claire and Aaron get on a helicopter and leave the Island. But he could still be wrong.
He thought Charlie would die as soon as he got into the Looking Glass, but that played out differently than he imagined. There is room for error in his interpretation of what he sees.
Also, Mikhail got exploded in the Season 3 finale. He can survive a lot, but not that.
That guy that parachuted at the end, Daniel (Jeremy Davies) played Baldur in God of War 2018. He was also in Saving Private Ryan
I like that look on Jacks face during Hurleys speech. He did not know Charlie was dead until that moment which is why he was crying.
Season 4 is my 2nd favorite season. The upended timeline and the breakneck pace of a shortened season are a near perfect mix.

Locke says he always did what was in the best interest of everyone. Small correction. What he thought was in the best interest of everyone in my opinion. And so he did what Kate did by killing Wayne. She thought of her mother, she decided for her mother without asking her opinion. Locke thought of the survivors, he decided for the survivors without asking their opinion. I don't see why he deserves more leniency than her, when he made this mistake several times and she only once. But hey, people are free to have their own opinions.
Charlie is dead. So Hurley sees ghosts ? It can't be just in his head since the other patient sees it too. Sometimes they say that people in these kinds of centers have a different approach to reality. Maybe that's the case for this patient, for Hurley, who are able to see what others can't. In that, they are special.

The Fringe series is also one of my favorite series. I feel nostalgic for the time when I watched that series. It's a pity there are few such series now, if there are any at all

Locke's choices are not good ones. He can be both right about the island *and* wrong in how he behaves. He keeps things lively though.

So, I'm going to slow walk this...watch the interrogation room scene again. When Charlie presses his hand against the glass, just before the glass explodes and water floods the room, you can see that there is a message written on his hand. It is a three word message, but it isn't "Not Penny's Boat" this time.

It can mean `the destroying angel" or "a place of destruction".
There was also something else at the time that was cause people to theorize but I don't remember why... Hurley said he saw Charlie's ghost by the Ho Hos (if you live outside North America, Ho Hos are chocolate cake things) and during the game of HORSE, they only made it to H-O before Jack stormed off. So there was something about the letters "H-O" that had the armchair theorists going nutty but I cannot remember for the life of me what it related to.

@@Capo_Renzo Yep, that is an astute position and noticed the same. It's the writing that creates that energy to choose sides with characters. LOST is not a sport but in the end it will sort itself out.
It's only poor writing when you don't agree. Not sure how it's poor when you know what happened to Hurley with Locke.
It is possible for Locke to be right in believing in the island *and* wrong in the ways he goes about things. Those can both be true.

I mean, you know he's amenable to coercion. How do you reconcile what you know? He's being used, misled. You know this. So what is Locke right about besides the general overview? Is that carte blanche to do whatever he wants? To deceive and manipulate? Locke has a path... even though it's frustratiing. And his path is mostly failure. His failure is important for others success. It's his fate to do the wrong things... so everything happens as it always did. Jack wasn't wrong. They were meant to leave the island. If he didnt make that call... the rest wouldn't happen as it was already meant to. All those things, whether I like them or not, are the steps to the end. Just like Freighter was supposed to come, etc... But it not bad writing for Hurley to regret going with Locke... after how Locke used him.

Not that this is a big deal AT ALL, but this just confuses me, (also for some reason I see other reactors do this as well) - when you see the final black out with the LOST text, that is OBVIOUSLY the end of the episode. But for some reason you don’t seem to notice until you see the credits 5 seconds after. LOL Like obviously not a big deal at all but I’m just curious, are you not seeing the LOST title with the “boom” sound effect? That means the episode is over lol. It’s just so weird because I see a lot of other reactors not realize that that means the episode is over and then when they see the credits, they’re like “oh man that’s the end of the episode?” Just confuses the hell out of me haha

Rose gets on my nerves here. Flipped on John pretty quick after being cool and having a nice island healing bond. After Jack was about to blow his brains out, she ignores it and it’s basically screw John.
I get backing Jack, he did save her life. But it’s weird how she just flipped on John when she knows that the island is a special place and doesn’t want to leave anyway.

I don't know... she just watched Locke murder an unarmed woman, in the back. And shoot the gun and threaten Jack. (So the gun was loaded just awhile ago.) So she knows what drove Jack to it. She's always been more team Jack. And she's right... Locke is a murderer. As are quite a few there. Does only Locke get to kill for his reasons? Locke killed coldly... at least Jack's attempt was driven heatedly (Boone, the sub, Naomi). In my book, Rose & Bernard are the best inner compass on the island.

The parachutist at the end of this episode, Jeremy Davies who plays Daniel Faraday, has been in several movies and shows. However, I immediately recognized him when I saw his name credit appear in the video game God of War, where he voiced Baldur, one of the gods that appear in flesh form early in the game when he comes knocking on Kratos door. Even the character design appears to have been taken from the actual appearance of Jeremy Davies.

And the boat doesn't belong to Penny. It was never up for debate with the audience. For the viwersr, we know that Jack is wrong and Locke and Ben are right. After two flashforwards it's clear as day.
I think it may be due to a different generations view point. I can’t remember anyone seeing Locke as a threat or having bad intentions back when this first aired.
It may be that the generation today has become more skeptical and suspicious of a persons intentions.
@@nickstark8640 I watched this when it first aired and I've watched the show dozens of time, even contributing to Lostpedia as that site was being written. Trust me, lots of people were fed up with Locke trying to sabotage them from getting off the island over and over again and manipulating Sawyer into murder. We definitely thought at this point that Locke was heading down a dark path, maybe not villain but certainly not good ... that being said, I don't want to say how opinions of Locke did or did not change beyond this episode because I don't want to spoil things for Elie. But at this point, a LOT of people were not on board with Locke.
Especially considering in flashforward, Hurley says "sorry i went with Locke," which implies Locke is on the wrong path.

@@jeffwontshutup Saying Locke manipulated Sawyer into killing the man responsible for his parent’s death doesn’t make sense to me. Locke was basically told by Richard that Sawyer should kill him. When Locke killed Naomi, he was following instructions as well. Since you have seen this series before, you know who Naomi was associated with.
You also said Locke was continually sabotaging their ability to leave the Island as something negative. Didn’t we just see Jack admit they never should have left the Island?
