The real strong part and underrated part of Robert Cray is his rhythm playing. It would be great to cover that as everyone just wants to cover his cool and unique lead style. When I hear either his lead or rhythm playing I know right away its Robert Cray.
Robert Cray was a big influence on my blues style. As a strat player, I really liked his tone. You have nailed his style in these licks. I don't know if he used hybrid picking, but I did because its what I thought he was doing.
Great lesson!! I do love Cray's blues playing and Rick here does it better than justice!! These licks are something I can take away and solidify into my own playing!! Thanks, buddy! I still can't believe you're a day over 35...........some some elixir shared from that fountain you have out back would be much appreciated as well!! :>) Jim C.
Nope, but the most important thing is to use pickup position 2 on a strat(all the way to the bridge position then up 1). Then a pretty clean tone, but I think I set my amp to the edge of breakup.
please Rick, where can i get tabs for these licks!!Oh yes,i just subscribed and got all your great licks in PDF including the R. Cray ones at page 25-26,!!!!Thanks so much!!!

Hey Rick, can't you talk a minute about settings to get more of Robert cray thing? I know he mostly uses neck/middle position, but my sound is always too bassy. Over whatever amp, pickup set etc. I'm currently playing a set of Duncan antiquity IIs to get max quack but I'll take any suggestions into consideration
Use the second position on strat 5 way switch, so one up from the bridge position, thats the tone. I just went straight into my amp, Magnatone Varsity reverb

Agree. You've nailed the tone and feel, sounds like an isolated guitar from his recordings!

Thanks Jim, yeah not sure if he uses hybrid picking either but his tone and feel are always just right.
Love the sound of that guitar.
