What I really enjoy about your lessons is that you are a very young man and you’re digging so deep, so far back into history for these ideas. When these guys were playing organ licks like this, nobody was even thinking of playing the guitar that way. Fantastic and original playing; you, George Benson and Danny Gatton, that’s it!
Great lesson, and thanks for mentioning Danny Gatton! I think he used to turn the tone pot all the way down and click on the tremelo on his amp, and with various hand damping and hybrid picking, he got a great sound of a B-3 through a Leslie. Thanks again!
Just discovered your channel - absolutely superb! Hands down one of the best R&B style guitarists I've come across. Will be slowly working my way through your old videos! Keep it up!
Dig your page man! You are where I am right now musically, 60's and 70's soul/funk. Yea, I dig McGriff and Jimmy Smith and also recently discovered Les McCann/Eddie Harris. In going down the Cornell Dupree "rabbit hole" also discovered Donny Hathaway, who I am currently nerding out on. This video is especailly perfect for the guitar just adding color to a funky soul tune. Letting the keys take the lead meldodically, with the guitar adding color.
Rick I really enjoy your videos.... the content and explanations are great. I am excited to learn these licks... Super cool.... thanks for all your hard work and dedication to helping those of us who are aspiring to improve.
Oh man i'm off to my room for the month to try and get these awesome groove licks down!!Plus i just got a B3 pedal from EHX so man i can't wait!!Thanks so much!!
TastyGuitar.com its calkwd the Organ Machine B9 coupled with a Lester K pedal(imitation Lesley rotating speaker)it opens up a whole new ''rabbit hole''!!
Hey Rick, I saw these licks back when you first made the video. Not sure why I didn't learn them then. They are fantastic. Have you heard of Wilbert Longmire? He was a guitarist from Cincinnati that passed away about ten years ago. He was a bit of a smooth jazz star around 1979 thru 1985 when he put out 3 albums on Bob James' Tappenzee Records. Later he did a straight ahead organ trio CD with drummer- Bill Stewart and Columbus, OH organist- Hank Marr which was on Jamey Aebersold's Double Time label. Wilbert was slick and did a ton of bluesey double stop- hammer on soul jazz licks. Check him out if you can. Plenty of good material for your channel.
Benson said he developed his now famous picking technique totally by accident because he would practice in his bunk on tour with McDuff and he would have to position his wrist in a somewhat unorthodox manner because of the cramped quarters. He probably never imagined back then that thousands and thousands of guitarists around the world would end up trying to emulate his picking technique. Nice video...although I was expecting the 'ole B3 Organ sound effect trick (chorus pedal with the rate turned way up - learned that from Chris Amelar's "Guitar F/X Cookbook" way back in the late '90s - big fun). Although probably not such a great sound to teach these organ-style licks with. Have a good one!
Fatty McFatterson great story! as amazing as Benson is, this kinda feel started to get into my playing by listening to an amazing Danny Gatton/Joey Defrancesco album called Relentless.....you are a fountain of information Fatty!
My apologies! I just found your channel and have subscribed. Thank you for all of these very fine lessons - really enjoyable and inspiring techniques and very well demonstrated.
These organ licks really do lend themselves to guitar. You're getting a lovely tone out of that Ibanez (is it?), too. What amp are you using with it? Thanks!
If I could play like this i'd Never say another word! Just buttery, like he just got done eating fried chicken(greasy fingers) keep on keepin on "Slick Rick" lol
These are funky but not FUNK : they remind me that most early r&b and rock n roll hits were played by ’older’ jazz-oriented session men who used thick heavy flatwounds and amps set for a very wooden tone : even when they spanked the notes, it only briefly flared into modest distortion. Their sound was more pitch and less percussion : and the heavy strings meant it easier to do little slides and hammer ons rather than big bends....glad to see that someone continues to emulate that tone because FUNK guitar, itself, is hardly a dying art..

Timothy Daniels thanks Timothy! Not a very young dude though lol, Nixon was in his first term when I was born
Its great when you play just the lick a few times without an explanation ( 6.00) so it sinks in and trains the ear thanks
Excellent grooves and moves!
By far the funkiest and the best teacher on RUclips.
thanks for watching every vid!

Great video! Have you tried any organ effect pedals?
thanks, I have, they are ok but I used to a synth guitar setup that had an amazing B3-ish sound

I have been looking for these type of lessons!!!! Do you have any for lap steel sounds?!!
Cristian Tapia glad you found this! But sorry no lap steel lessons
Oh Hellz YEAH!
Great lesson! A valuable and FUN technique. Now do saxophone licks, please. As your time and inclination dictates, of course.

+promerops actually no amp used, just running direct to board with a tc nova system
I agree it does sound better with hybrid picking, it sort of imitates the percussive clicky sound of those Hammond organs
If I could play like this i'd Never say another word! Just buttery, like he just got done eating fried chicken(greasy fingers) keep on keepin on "Slick Rick" lol
Kenny Burrell too
Some of this reminds me of Ivan "Boogaloo Joe" Jones style of playing.
Please part 2 3 and 4
Albert Collins!!!

Your fingering on the tabs for lick 3 is wrong. It gives 5th position fingerings but you are playing in the 8th position.
nope, check again, first note is at the 5th fret
