Congrats! And well done. I had a similar journey into it and now been a Software Engineer for nearly 4 years. For anyone that doesn't believe you can be a software engineer, working on complex technical challenges and architectural problems without a degree, they must've missed how the industry has evolved. Heaps of tech companies have engineers with unconventional career histories working on super hard problems at scale. This isn't new. Call yourself a software engineer because you are one! Well done and good luck with the new role
Thank you so much, Anne. I appreciate that so much. Wow, 4 years as a Software Engineer. That's really amazing and thank you so much for sharing these words of encouragement to anyone that reads this. Thank you for the love and uplifting! ❤
@@LawsIntuitive V similar to Jennifer! I did a HTML/CSS course with Code First:Girls outside of work, as I was not financially stable enough for a bootcamp. Then progressed to the Ruby course. My course tutors on both courses were great, and were on hand to offer tips and lightweight mentoring (pointers towards important concepts, key things for interviews). I had planned on doing a MSc conversion course, but to prepare I decided to start interviewing earlier than intended with companies to figure out my gaps in knowledge. Through this I got an offer from the Guardian to join their Fellowship scheme. All in all, I started my first HTML/CSS course session in Oct 2015 and interviewed for the Guardian in Feb / March 2016, starting my first job as a developer that May :) Don't want to get too into it here to distract from Jennifer's channel (plus her experience, choices & advice are all things I'd recommend and think are great to hear!) But if you have questions about getting into software engineering from an unconventional background, feel free to jump into my DMs on LinkedIn. Anne Byrne this comment has given me so much hope. I work in Hr and currently considering changing careers. I’ve been doubtful I can make this move yet this comment has given me so much hope!
I went from making $37K/yr to $125K+/yr by teaching myself how to code, so it's always dope seeing other people make the transition through a non-traditional route, especially my fellow Africans! Major congratulations! You're helping motivate a lot of people!
@Marcus Cole Moore hey, I'm a fullstack Ruby on Rails developer, and it took me about 3-5 months to teach myself while working full-time. I know JavaScript as well. How long things take largely depend on you, and if you have a tutor to help you whenever you get stuck. If you're interested in learning to code and wondering where to start, check this out: ruclips.net/video/gskko9DggXs/видео.html
So im considering becoming a Software engineer, do you really make 125k + a year and is it worth it. Is coding hard and is the trditnal route worth it?.
@nita bineta it varies based on the company. My first job, I was at a cybersecurity startup. Second job, at a healthcare startup. And now, I'm at a media company. So, the projects vary, but the tools didn't.
Very inspirational. I'm just dipping my toe into the tech world at the moment having lost my job due to the pandemic. I've decided that I'm sick and tired of doing dead end jobs where I'm milked dry and seen as completely dispensable by my employers. I'm 30 and I feel like ive wasted so much time just coasting through life and it's now or never for me to change its course for the better. Thanks again for sharing your story.
I left my counseling degree to pursue tech and I hope to become a SE after bootcamp. So glad I’m not alone! Lol I hope I get a job right out of bootcamp! Thank you for this video!
3 months later. Covid-19 is upon us, and I discover this gem of a video. Very motivational and honest. Thanks a lot for sharing. I've subbed, and I'm hoping to see more. 👏👍

You and wonderful and inspiring! I am also a woman from a non-tech background trying to transition into software engineering, and hearings stories like yours is extremely valuable. Thank you for sharing.
You are such an inspiration. I’m also a college dropout and I have the same difficulties with staying focused. I’m currently getting burnt out in my Sales career and looking into tech. This was a big help THANK YOU
First I want to say congratulations on overcoming, fulfilling and fighting to get to where you are. You brought tears to my eyes because some of the challenges you mentioned in your video regarding school I went through the same. I graduated from university with a 1 year old and a Low GPA. I’m now 41 and is looking for a career change. Right now I’ve been Quarantined due to covid-19 and have been doing a lot of thinking about what I’m going to do with my life. That’s when I came across a RUclips video about how not a lot of brown girls are not in the coding industry. I was immediately intrigued. After combing through RUclips inquiring about computer engineers I would only click on people who looked like me. That is how I found your video. I must be honest listening to your story excited me. I’m strongly considering taking a shot at this. Thank you for sharing your story I really appreciate and admire your strength to push through. 💕
Wow what a lovely and inspiring video Jennifer. I was primarily attracted to this video because of its title but your whole story was really amazing to hear and the way you shared it with us just by being your natural self. Speaking out of personal experience as a native Londoner I have to fully agree with you that moving to a new country is a highly valuable learning experience in itself.
FINALLY a Software Engineer sharing her story with some PERSONALITY!! I knew the second I heard the music and diva hair I was going to enjoy this. Thanks for sharing your journey! 1st vid? You were FANTASTIC! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

I’ve watched so many videos on software development because I’ve been considering this career for myself. I have a long road ahead but you’ve given me so much confidence. Thank you for this video! So proud of you!
Love hearing different stories of how people work in tech! I just uploaded my first video on How I became a software developer! Hope to see you all in there!
I just discovered you. I started to learn in 2017 after I quit a job I didn't liked. Then I quit learning, I had a job that I liked but not fulfilled me and now I am unemployed mom of a toddler starting again to code. I don't want to give up! I want to learn and become a web developer. I am scarred a bit and I really want to be a developer!
I rarely leave comments, but your video was very inspiring. I’m Congolese as well and I’m gaining interest in software engineering. So thank you for posting this. You really motivated me ☺️
Hey! The biggest take aways for me we learning about yourself, investing time into a new skill and taking a risk. Inspiring, love it! Thank you for sharing :)
I heard the intro and I clicked and subbed so fast!!! I’m Nigerian and that song by Donat Mwanza is my FAVVVV!!! Can’t understand a word but I love it all the same. Your story is truly inspiring. I’m looking into a career change in the future especially moving into the Finance/Tech space.
Your journey is already an inspiration to many and I know there’s so many more people who will be impacted by it in a positive way in the future! Even with openly sharing about adhd and dyslexia. Career changes are hard and a lot of young people get into degrees without actually discovering what they’re passionate about. So thank you for sharing and looking forward to seeing how your journey blossoms even more!
You don't know important it is for me to see someone who looks like me sharing their coding story. I'm coming from a social work/nonprofit background and am starting to learn how to code! Much love from Dallas, Texas. Please keep posting videos!!

It is still kind of mind blowing how many people are becoming self taught programmers (other STEM fields like chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, still want advanced degrees, which require a minimum of 4 years of college). Yet, someone can learn how to become a programmer and get a job inside 3 months. Considering how much skills you need to get a technical job, that is impressive (never mind competing against people who have a CS degree at age 22). I am trying to become a self taught programmer , yet I have no desire to go through the process of going to interview, after interview, so I have some small chance of being offered a job. I wonder if I should just make you tube tutorials until someone offers me a job.
Big congratulations to you, I am currently looking into getting into tech as I have always had the passion. All the videos I have been watching are based in the US so I was really happy to have found tour video. 👍😊
So inspired! Love your decision to move to Belfast. I'm about to start an apprenticeship 300 miles from home in software engineering and it feels good to know that such a big move can work out.

Hope that you and yours are well. I would love to know more about your journey as you continue in software engineering. Can't wait to continue to watch all your videos.
You made the right decision honey, no one can do it all., we all have weaknesses and strength. Follow your instinct because it's God speaking to you, He will lead you to become what He created you to be. make the best decision for you, not other people. Follow your path and you'll be amazed how your life will blossom. You couldn't get a business degree, but you became software engineer, how awesome is that. God bless you sweetheart.

Before I laughed, I had to make sure the intro music wasn't playing in the background of my computer..Congo vraiment😂 Inspiring video and Congratulations for getting into Tech! I'm in my final year majoring in Mechanical Engineering and been loving coding in python to implement machine learning models with data from the field... I think the path to becoming a " software engineer ", unlike other traditional engineering fields like mechanical or electrical, has really evolved in a way that a degree is no longer a must to get into the field or a position with the title. You can teach yourself programming and write good code and maybe even better than someone with CS degree.. Yes you might not be doing time space complexity or stochastic gradient descent as you start... but..Anything is possible with time!! You learn the appropriate tools as you go along with a career I guess... Maybe I'll end up becoming a software engineer with a ME degree... Glad to hear you shifted to big data, hope you're enjoying it!!... Wait... hope I enjoy it when I also join after my degree 😂...Na lobi ebele boye...Bon...Thanks for sharing and All the best!!
ahh, vids from before March 2020...👀👀👀 Anticipation for the new year full of promise...🤦♀️😒 So glad i found your channel Love. You go Girl!! Way to follow your heart. No you sure didnt lie 🤣🤣 Really appreciate the details of when and how you began different languages, the journey, and your mindset going through it. Best wishes!
Only difference between our journeys is that I’m a African American male trying to go into computer programming and science and it’s a state away first time for me leaving and your a African British woman doing computer engineering in the uk our lives mirror so much, off topic I think your my twin flame or soul mate thank you for the video
I just got started with Java on Udemy. This gives me hope. Thank you. I’m doing HTML CSS and Javascript on the side. Almost done with that though. I’m mostly doing a lot of practice.
nduka juliet it’s cheap and very resourceful. The courses are well made. I like how my java class was structured I learned a lot and now all I do is make project for practice. Usually the course with the most reviews is the best one to take. It’s way better than code academy. Coursera is great too but I don’t have $50 per month for it. Udemy it’s one time payment $10 to buy a single course. But those 2 are great in my opinion. Tbh Java is like 80% practice. Reading and course are great to understand the fundamentals. Without them u will struggle with coding. The rest is just finding project and exercise to sharpen your skills. Be ready to put in hours. I was doing 2 hours a day sometimes more. At least 20hrs a week. I would watch a chapter/ section which is like 2 hrs then right after do questions on that chapter then a few days later move on to the next section. It was fun. I love the headache
You know thank you so much for this video...i wanted to become a software engineer but din't want to pay to the colleges and neither i wanted to waste my time....And you won't believe but i'm not gonna lie it's been 3 to 4 days and i was searching something like this nd here i am....so thank you
This was inspiring do to my struggles of focusing all of my life and it was once said I could have delexia (if I spelled it correct). I've learned to teach myself at my pace on a lot of things. I am actually interested in cybersecurity, and if you have any bonuses based on our disabilities, pls share, and thank you.
I would never recommend that a young person drop out of university! It’s very very important to prioritize your credentials because the future is one where having the most education will benefit you! Especially when you are young , your opportunity cost of getting a law degree or medical degree or engineering degree is not very high!
There are loads of extremely successful people who have dropped out of uni. Depending on the career path, uni can be helpful but it's not for everyone and it's not the only answer in life. Success comes in many different forms and the world is constantly changing. There are more opportunities and resources present now than ever. This young lady is a prime example.
Jennifer Opal so far so good! I’m using a mixture or khan academy and sololearn. So far I have a pretty basic blog set up with html and css. I’m trying to get a good grip on those before moving on to JavaScript. I took a class on JavaScript when I was in high school. I’m 22 now and haven’t done anything with it since.
Omg! It's like looking in the mirror and watching the video I wanted to make but never did. I'm at the, how should I start my self learning, fork in the road.
Yeah Thanks for the video, looking towards changing my role as an accountant to becoming a tech person, any idea where to start from. HTML is the first which am doing from Udemy. Looking forward to a response. Thanks
I want to be a software engineer, but my university background subject is Arts(Humanities), How can i be a software engineer? Please help me, how? any degree provider or training institute where can i study software engineering.

Major how is the learning going at udemy? Am looking for a very good resource to learn java.
nduka juliet it’s cheap and very resourceful.

Eza esengo Makasi ko mona congolaise engagé na ba technologies ya sika. You're great, you'll make it wherever go
I would never recommend that a young person drop out of university!
Agreed, so long as students control their debt, ruling-out super expensive tuitions as much as possible.
video starts at 3:45
@lee I laughed at this! 😅I rambled a lot. Blame the nerves! Hope you enjoyed the video regardless.
Jennifer Opal i did! Teaching myself to code as of a few days ago and content like this is so inspiring
@@aaleeyahhh97 That's so amazing! 🤗 I'm so happy to hear that and thank you. Is it going OK so far? What are you using to learn?
Jennifer Opal so far so good! I’m using a mixture or khan academy and sololearn. So far I have a pretty basic blog set up with html and css. I’m trying to get a good grip on those before moving on to JavaScript. I took a class on JavaScript when I was in high school. I’m 22 now and haven’t done anything with it since.
Anyone can get in. No one survives. Very competitive space. Btw this is not software engineering it's web development
Do you have any updates? I’m doing the IBM course Data Analytics. Do you have any updates on your role?
You are an inspiration.
Amazing!
You look good. Congratulations from Kenya
@Michael Dunga, thank you so much. 😊 Hello to you in Kenya!
I couldn't sleep at night, so I came to see you again
I’m currently learning to code to, on a random note how did you make friends in a new city?
I’m currently learning to code to, a random question ,how did you make friends in a new city?

Thanks
