      why should the log recording be artificially limited? Other cams give you those stops without raw. (using 10bit video) I think it's a marketing thing.

    I love my c200b. It’s perfect for
    What I do. RUclips and low budget client work the 4K 8bit 420 is more than enough. And when I’m doing larger budget stuff the Raw is incredible. People complain about no middle 10bit codec. But it’s perfect for what I do.

      what do you use for a monitor? Atomos? can you still do auto focus/face tracking while using an external screen?

    Really a great analysis, and great job in the video. I am a life long Canon user, and I own a Canon C300 II, 5D mark IV..and all the L series lenses. Having said that, I bought the Panasonic Eva1. I will tell you right up front, the Canon C200 is a lot simpler to use, and the auto focus alone is head and shoulders above EVA1. In every other category, the Eva1 kicks the C200's butt!!! It's not acceptable to pay the same price and not future proof your camera. Great point about Raw recording and outputting in 4:2:2, but two down side is massive storage requirement, very tedious post production process vs EVA1..and by the way, side by side, even the canon raw falls apart next to the EVA1 image. It really breaks my heart to say this. I have been a life long Canon guy, but to me ...Canon is taking us for granted, and short changing it's users for their own profit. That's not acceptable to a loyal long time customer like me. You also didn't mention the horrible mp4 format recording....but aren't we going backwards? I own an inferno shogun ...and I use that with Canon and Panasonic....and Panasonic kills Canon raw image even using the external recorder. Now if you are doing run and gun, you tube and docs only, the C200 is great. Just my two cents. You really did a great job with your video. Earned my follow :)

      I know, your comments is 7 months old, but I'm looking into the C200, FS5 ii and EVA-1.
      What would you reccomend, and why?

  • @andric72
    @andric72 6 лет назад +5

    Coming from Ursa mini pro, using this camera is so sweet!!! Perfect, every thing is in the right place. Most of the time the UMP log is quite inconsistent (shifting colors) while I like the density of C200. And is incredible how good is 420 8bit XF-AVC. far better of many 422 10 bit cameras!!

      This is the camera to get for video from Canon, why people get the 1DX Mark ii which is basically the same overall price as the C200 for video is beyond me.

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  6 лет назад +5

      If you shoot pictures the 1DX makes sense because it gives you great video and also one of the most amazing cameras for photography. The 1DX is like the best of both worlds,, but if you're only going to use it for video then yes it makes no sense getting the 1DX because the C200 is 10x better for video.

      @LoverOfTech 6 лет назад +1

      CoveringFish that’s absolutely fair if photos are something that you’re gonna take, that’s the benefit of a hybrid shooter. I’m more against the ones using it just for video and no photos are all, makes no sense

      Hello everyone here can you explain more why the canon c200 is better than 1 dx mkii I have canon 1dx mkii and I have the best quality that I’ve ever seen, I don’t really use it for photos because I use my canon 5d mk3 and my Sony a7r3 mainly for my photography,
      I’m just saying if the c200 only does 2k raw why and how is that so much better than 4K and my hacked cinestyle, and clog at 4K
      Please don’t bash me just want your input tks

    I use C200 for wide variety of jobs, from weddings in 1080p, to commercial jobs in RAW, it is IMO the best camera on the market, including Arri. The colors are very very close to Arri, but everything else is better (much faster) to work with.

    Great review Armando! You made me want to instantly buy this camera... I have been using Canon since about 20 years, starting with XM-1 (I used it more than 10 years and then gave it away to a young cameraman in Madagascar who is still using it!), followed by the XM-2 (problems with the electronics right from the start), then my absolute favorite XH-A1S which I am missing so much. I had to buy a new camera, because the new laptops don't have a IEEE1394 connection anymore and tape-based operation is not ideal in the hot and humid climate of tropical countries where I live. I bought the XA-30 which I consider a big mistake - I never know what I am doing, no indication, and everything hidden in the menu! I am looking for a camera which has all manual controls and 3 continuously variable adjustment rings for zoom, iris and focus like my XH-A1S - but with state-of-the-art 4K quality... It seems this is the C2000 - now I have to find the money (or wait until someone wants to sell his used model...).

    Let me just say, sir, that this has been one of the best reviews of anything that I have looked up on YT. I found this to be to the point, not nit-pickey, not wandering down rabbit holes, and without gimmicks or overbearing personalities. For that I say, thank you. I wish more reviews could be like this one.

    Great review Armando. I bought the first C200 sold in Australia and I love it. It is super easy to use run and gun. Just switch it on. DPAF is sooo good. Even the 8 bit looks better than Sony 10 bit. Low light rocks. I work in the humanitarian space and this camera is perfect for hostile and complex environments. I team it with my Canon XC10 which is also great, especially for sensitive areas where I just want to look like a normal aid worker. lol.
    Thanks again.

    I know after my upgrade from the A6300 to the A73 that the Canon C200 will be my first and pretty much only proper video only camera for RUclips and weddings. Ashame it doesn't have the ability to shoot ProRes RAW and also you can't use the HDMI and SDI out at the same time. Nonetheless this is a much better camera for video than the 1DX ii which for the live of me make no sense for video with the awesome C200. great video review man💯

    I had used this on a couple very good short films, the 10-bit 422 can be done..., but it is not to destroy the c300 MK2 , it is exactly because You or a thousand guys out there will not be paying for it..... ! Bigger, noisier, more expensive after they had added it on ! But this video of yours is amazing good and I enjoyed and I had forwarded it to a hundred guys !!!! Keep it up !!!!

    We currently use C100s, and are considering upgrading to the C200. We don’t have a need to shoot in raw, or even 4K....so would the sensor on the C200 still give us enough improvement on the overall image quality to justify the upgrade? I guess I’m asking if has a significantly better sensor than the C100 has?
    Great overview video by the way! Thanks

  • @joelee24
    @joelee24 6 лет назад

    First of all I am not a video guy and have almost zero knowledge about it, your review is very complete and quite easy to understand I enjoy watching it. I've watched lot of review on video cameras, multi function DSLR/Mirrorless and pure video cameras, most of them are not built like a regular video camera, they are more like a still camera, user has to install add on kits to make it handle like a regular video camera and that cost lot of money, only the Canon like yours built and handle like a regular video camera. I don't know the cost of the units, but if I were to shoot video in regular basis I would consider something like yours instead of those 'boxy' ones, and I believe high end video cameras like yours can handle stills equally well if it does take still.
    One more thing, I don't know why, 99% of the review on video camera are shot with 'flat profile' (please excuse my ignorance on terms), the image is so flat and dull very boring, only your review shown the natural color, it is the norm these days to shoot like that ? and I agree with you that Canon produces natural skin tone, I am not a Canon fan but I've seen photos shoot with Canon film camera is just like that.

I raise a question: if you could choose, for a RUclips channel, to buy a video camera, which one would you choose between the Canon c 200 and the Canon XF705. Taking into account the image quality, functions, handling and similar prices. Thank you for your proposals.

    Great video, Armando. Auto focus is an amazing thing and even more amazing is that “only face” feature I didn’t know!!! The only thing for me is that I have the R with an RF lens, and that uses EF lenses..., so I’d have to buy EF lenses and that’s a further expense ☹️. Waiting to September 24th to see the new cinema camera that will use RF lenses! Thanks

    Great review and I agree with 95% of what you stated. As far as using the monitor outside, we've been shooting a documentary on the ocean for the past almost year with the camera, the solution is so simple. Turn up the luma on the screen to +2 and add a Hoodman H400. Works a charm in nuclear daylight. The only drawback is the Hoodman slightly covers the right or left edge of the screen to occasionally your audio meter is covered but most of the time I am shooting b-roll so I set and forget audio levels with a safety channel so no big deal for me. You cna slide the Hoodman ovewr to reveal but then you are cropping a bit of the left hand side of the screen then. Not perfect but makes it workable for a lot of scenarios.
    I agree, I shoot with the C300 MKII a lot also and I much prefer the C200 to the C300 MKII, it's smaller, lighter, easier to cradle, better monitor, hate the clamshell on the C300 MKII and the AV cables that snag on everything and get in the way. Wish that Canon would make a still photo L better, newer version of the 17-55 2.8 IS. I love the 18-80 T4.4 but it's expensive, have to have the Zacuto right hand cable, T4.4 is too slow for certain scenarios and I like 2.8 better and the balance when cradling makes it too front heavy. I would gladly pay $2,200.00 for a new 17-75 2.8 IS II STM L lens Canon, get it together. Servo is cool but not a huge requirement for run and gun documentary style shooting for me.
    The lack of a 10-bit 4:2:2 codec is a none factor for me. The C200 is a RAW camera with proxy and MP4 added as an afterthought, which is fine for quickie, RUclips video or long long interviews. But CRL is where it's at. If you need 10-bit 4:2:2, but a different camera, right?
    Oh, yeah, and Canon PLEASE enable CRL in UHD, not just DCI. DCI is useless for most of us who aren't shooting narrative, it's just an extra step to get rid of the 17:9 black bars. I would REALLY prefer to shoot CRL in 3840 x 2160.

  • @CanditoTrainingHQ
    @CanditoTrainingHQ Год назад

    10:38 isn't true. You could shoot exactly the same shot, in CLOG 3, 10 bit, and recover the exact same amount of highlight information if the initial iso and F stop are the same. Raw doesn't recover clipped highlights, and raw doesn't increased dynamic range vs 10 bit log. It's misleading only because the raw automatically shows as a normal image rather than a flat image first, so basically you can imagine the LUT is already showing up on the software end for the computer. There is no real gain from raw other than white balance and color info, which is meaningful, but not that relevant to many.

    I watched a lot of pro/con videos on C200 and one thing that rarely gets discussed: the camera’s fan exhaust is located on operator side of the camera where a person’s ear is generally located when the camera is on a shoulder rig. The fan intake is on the opposite side where the grip is. Why didn’t Canon flip the fan so the intake is on the operator side? Or put the exhaust on the back side of the camera?

    Great video. Question… I’m thinking of buying the version that is the body only, but does that mean the autofocus will not be included? In this video I got the impression that autofocus was only available with the touchscreen monitor. Thinking about it further, I guess it would make sense that the auto focus would not be included because the monitor facilitates changing focus points, etc. I just want to confirm. Kind thanks.

    Key features why I would consider this camera: Autofocus, internal RAW recording (I wish it was 4K...ugh), battery life, build quality, The EVA1's only real feature is that it records internally at 5.7K at 4K. Essentially, that is the ONLY reason why I like the EVA1.

    OK, it's August 2020. What would you buy? Backstory: long time stills photographer using Canon gear so have EF (and older) lenses. Want to learn to shoot video at a high level in my retirement. Autofocus I think is essential as my eyesight is not as good as it once was up close. I've had real grief using my Blackmagic 4K because of it... So, is the C200 worthy of the price in 2020? PS: have watched a TON of your stuff and it's all top notch. Love the channel.

    Great video, thanks a lot! I am in the process of buying a C200 myself and have a really stupid and noob question but.. i will ask anyway simply because I dont know about it or how this camera works. When shooting RAW, are any video profiles or LOG modes selectable or can/need to be applied (like when shooting MP4), or because its RAW, basically is just RAW straight out of the sensor with no procession and end of story? Thanks again :)

    Well you mentioned the conflict between the cinema level cameras, but the biggest problem with Canon is their DSLRs also compete with and overlap their cinema line. That makes them less inclined to apply features that other manufactures aren't bothered by. That inherent conflict is what holds Canon back and why the lose sales to other manufactures. Sony has the same issue, but appear to do a much better job of balancing the two. Canon really needs to space their cameras a bit better.
    As to the top handle, that goes back to the days of the camcorders, long before RED was invented. You also forgot to mention the negative of the ridiculously expensive CFast cards

    C200 or Eva1?
    I'm leaning towards the Eva1 to be honest but my only problem is autofocus which is a real need for me because I'm a one man band.
    Also the 5.7k sensor super 35mm looks really sweet and also the lightness of the camera it self for a whole day of shoots its gonna be perfect. I'm a gh* series user and coming from there makes more sense for a panasonic cinema line as i'm not familiar with canon body. Although I shot with the c200, it's sweet!

      @@cncmediapro Again, it really depends what I'm going to be filming. I'd buy both, because they're both going to have advantages and disadvantage. First off, if you think the R5 is going to have the Dynamic Range of a Cinema Camera you're going to be in for a big surprise. Also, built in ND Filters is GOLD! It seems like you're trying to make a decision on what camera you should buy, perhaps I'll ask you what you plan to use it for?

    Hi Armando. Thank you so much for the review. I have the same pro's and con's about this camera. But your enthusiasm about it, might do the trick;-) Do you have any experience with the Panasonic EVA-1 i wonder? I'm doubting between EVA and C200, because my last camera was a Panasonic (AG-AF101) and i also heard a few great things about it.

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  6 лет назад

      I played around with it for a bit but not enough to feel comfortable giving an opinion about it. The biggest selling factor to me between both of these cameras was the internal RAW that the C200 offered. I just don't want to carry additional accessories if I don't need to and with Panasonic it's external. The other is the Dual Pixel AF, as someone who shoots a lot by myself I wanted reliable AF that would work without having to stress about it. Obviously built in ND filters and the whole package is awesome so it was a no brainer to me and having it for almost a year now my feelings have not changed, good luck with your purchase!

    Did you tried sigma 18-35/1.8 auto focus with the c200? Just a little curious about it.
    REALLY like your mention about the face only focus, the first time see in the youtube c200 review, I even start to laugh while looking that part, that's a good job for canon... if we could (of course not) forget about Canon's stupid C300 ii protecting... Hope after C300 iii, there will be some more function(such as kind of 10bit) for c200, and I also hope to see the full frame c300 iii...(maybe too much).
    BTW, SDI 3g output 10bit 422 1080p, HDMI output 4k 8bit 422. Cheers!
