A big up to Mum and Dad for taking their kids on this type of adventure. Much respect. And the things Dad's have to do to get the family across a freezing river!
ha ha, wouldn't want it any other way mate ... Nice helping the kids and wife across the stream, kids would have been sweet if it wasn't so bone cold... I think their poor limbs would have seized and they would have been swept to the ankle deep rapids.
So admire Soph for getting out there and doing it all with her knee injuries. I had spinal surgery two years ago and have permanent nerve damage in my right leg so also find some things hard. After a couple of falls while out tramping I get a bit nervous on rough terrain but Soph is really inspiring. Your whole family is amazing! Really enjoy following your adventures.
Yea she is so tough. She;s also had 2 spinal surgeries as well as the 2 knee Ops' shes finished riding all the Alps to Ocean trail on Tue about 300km, she is a trooper. Everyone has their limits though and Soph is pretty good at listening to her body and not going up big hills lol...
@leopardsgowild wow! Even more in awe now. I saw her biking and thought of she can do it so can I - although I have started running ... on flat ground 🤣
Naw thanks! I'm pretty determined to not miss out on adventures and whenever I'm out there I am so grateful for the opportunity because I have clear memories of not being able to do anything (several times). I guess it's about being realistic with goals and being careful. I'll always walk with a pole and sometimes I'll be going down hills backwards. Nerve pain is really debilitating and everything is a balance. I've got to keep moving to keep mine at a manageable level, but too much stress can be hideous in terms of the pain. Cold is also heightens everything. Stoked to hear you're running. Just remind yourself of where you've been, what you've experienced - that way every activity is a win! 🎉😊
@sophleopard9162 so true! I have the issue I can't entirely feel the muscles in my leg so have no idea when they're tired. Have had a couple of pretty good falls when my leg has just given out. We are hopefully spending two months in Europe and Scandinavia over Xmas so have huge goals for that. Keep on keeping on, love watching you guys
Wow. What an adventure. Well done everyone for making it. Wonderful to see the kids enjoying themselves surrounded by nature. Great effort Sophie and Dad for carrying the pack. Treasure the memories🤗🤗
The kids did great they all enjoy the forest and time at the hut, sometimes the walking can get a bit tiring for them but it makes the hut the much more special
Absolutely magic Leopards!! Building life long memories for your kids and building a relationship with them that is worth more than all the stars in the universe.
You're all creating everlasting memories while entertaining those of us who are parked up at home. Looking forward to the next video on the Hooker Valley track!
Yea it was a cool place to park up, some great views. I feel like good food is almost a must after something physical like carry packs in the mountains lol.. Hope ya'll are staying warm and dry.
What a great mini break away from the caravan. Love these nice river valley tramps. You should consider an overnighter to Lakehead or Coldwater hut at St Arnaud, and maybe a trip into the Leatham valley where you can access 4 huts from the truck. Maybe Big River hut near Reefton. At least those river crossings were each end of the walk, and nice to have a warm fire. A pruning saw is great for chopping up some firewood. Jade was keen with bare feet on the frost, some good work ferrying the kids across.
Cheers Garth, yip Jades feet were pretty cold after the frost then the river, walking across those stoney river bottoms makes it even harder when it's really cold aye. I was glad there was an axe in the hut, it meant we could smash up some of the bigger pieces for some overnight logs.
Absolutely amazing countryside! As former teacher of middle school for 25 years, these are the sorts of things the children would talk about for ages after summer break...memories for a lifetime...I can hear them now, "Do you remember when...!" Just perfect! Bruce and Otis
What a cool thing to do, that's a nice looking track. What happened to the other hut guest, did he avoid the camera or decide to leave? 🤣I bet those noodles on the way back were about the best tasting noodles ever. Well done to all of you!
& just like that youve figured out winter rvlife!!!! we never doubted u and soph!!! toby is an animal lol!!! epic travels , see yah in the next 1 fam!!!!!
yea bro, this was actually in May, before things got really cold, I imagine its a freezer in there now... lol... Kids feet must have been so cold after that crossing, mine were.
yea mate, the kids loved this hike, it was so cold, would be very interesting to see what it's like in here Mid winter... Could be a fun adventure. We went in during May so still relatively warm for the area.
Those river crossing were so icy will all be direct snow melt as well, you only have to walk another couple of hours to where the river begins. Hope ya'll are well, give our love to Linda.
Hi. Late to the party with seeing this. What lucky children to have you to give them such adventures. I've just started tramping again after a couple of years hiatus. I think I will be heading to this hut.
Oh thanks for the comments, we are gratefulf or adventurous Children def a great lifestyle a nice easy hike into South Temple hut for sure, freezing in the winter.
Yea it's such a great resource to people to be able to go into no mans land and enjoy the outdoors. Some of these huts are in places that would take you 3 or 4 days to walk to so you can go extremely remote, some of them you can 4x4 drive to, others are about an hours walk, so it makes it really accessible for all abilities, there is over 1,000 of these in the country. Weekends are likely to be busier so of the really popular places you need to book ahead so you don't arrive and realise there is no bed for you.
Yea such an amazing place, amazing to walk so long and not have anyone else on the trail, except the one person at the hut who had no idea 5 others were coming.
I knew how beautiful place you live in. I am also new zealander who live in australia. I always say I will go back. My son already moved wellington. Your children is really beautiful. I love you all. Good luck
It's a long time since I've been in country like that where you're so dominated by nature. My feet went numb just watching you standing in that river helping the kids across. It almost looked like you threw Toby across. I used to love that feeling of taking your pack off, like you are about to float off the ground.
ha ha, yes taking the pack off, is so good, the kids were commenting about that as well, feeling like they were so lite. It's some big country in there aye, being dominated by nature is a good way to describe it, you feel very insignificant in places like this.
Oddly never done south temple, done north many times. North hut got taken out by an avalanche and the swing bridge where you started got taken out by a flood. Good times
Oh really I didn't know there used to be a hut up the otherside... Apparently good rock climbing in the North Temple which is what the other cars were doing.
You sound like a NZ'er but you use the term hiking. For myself as a NZ'er i prefer to use the word Tramping which is unique to New Zealand. It would be a shame if the word tramping slowly disappeared from use. I encourage all NZers and even tourists to use the word Tramping.
New Zealanders also use the term hiking. I also use the term tramping, bush walk, overnight tramp or hike. Interesting this is what you took away from the video.

What a great family adventure. Great to see Sophie’s knee is doing ok. Stunning scenery and a great episode
Thanks team - it's feeling really solid which I'm stoked about. Love adventuring and I'd hate to miss out!
Thanks guys loving the US adventures me and Soph would love to follow in your footsteps in the years to come

Awww thanks so much, Jade is desperately wanting to go on another tramp she loves it, I feel like it might be really cold now...

Yea we've only done 1 other overnight hike before it was awesome then to, nice stripping back to the essentials in an overnight hut.
What a cool thing to do, that's a nice looking track. What happened to the other hut guest, did he avoid the camera or decide to leave? 🤣I bet those noodles on the way back were about the best tasting noodles ever. Well done to all of you!
no he stayed and was good company thanks Callum who was actually a DOC worker on his days off, he thought Toby was funny...
@@leopardsgowild Toby is a hard case
We really appreciated those hot noodles!
Another great video - well done with those freezing river crossings …..
Thank you, they were so cold, kids did well to get across and an experience to remember

How great is it that they have these little huts available. Id imagine its tough get a night to yourselves when its mid summer.
