Thought i had a switch issue the light would flash quickly when the trigger was pressed but no motor.. jumped the wire on the battery positive to the brown wire and it worked, stripped the shrink wrap off and the wire was still attached, but found broken right below the wire sheathing, stripped and re soldered works great.. years later your video still helps, much appreciated!!
This was also my issue. Saved me from ordering a new blower. The yellow wire was snapped off. Resoldered the yellow and the white one anyway and now my blower works again. Thank you
Brilliant mate opened up my impact driver and you were absolutely correct the wire was broken just before the soldered terminal so yeah thanks you just saved me 100 quid.
You just saved me 250 bucks! I took my impact apart expecting a cold solder or something and couldn't find anything wrong... But then I found your video and indeed the wire was broken exactly where you said it would be! I'm eternally grateful. So are my neighbors because I can go back to using the electric impact instead of the air gun. 😁
i like how you're repairing 20v power tools in this video, content that i was looking for so thank you....but in the back ground is a giant expensive jet engine way more worthy of a video.
Thank you so much! My Multitool stopped this afternoon and the symptom was just as you described. Thank you for the guidance! Exactly the same issue. All back to normal!
BLESS YOU MAN!!! My short hedge trimmer was slugish and hickuping on me right at the very end of a 3 day job! All other garden tools working perfecf with same batteries so thought engine was dead but still decided to youtube solutions before buying new one. Sure enough, both sensor wires were broken loose. You just saved me 160€!
As an electrician that does strictly remodels this is an absolute essential tool. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx0vyBwjtx9GGOuiqUVT2sRoYqmDoNT_RI Being able to precision cut any material with a light weight tool is priceless.I upgraded to this Dewalt 20v from a competitor's 12v. The Dewalt 20v is just as light as the competitor's 12v. I am extremely pleased with the overall performance and battery life of this tool. As far as oscillators go, they just aren't very ergonomic tools. The dewalt oscillators have an offset handle that do make them somewhat more ergonomic than the competitors' oscillators.
Brilliant video and advice thanks. Just opened up my DCD785 combi drill as per the video and found the broken wire (brown in this case) on one of the two inner terminals. Re soldered it and it's good to go. Saved me the cost of a new carcas thanks.
Thanks very much indeed. Following your advice, just ust repaired my DCD 785. You have saved me about £100.00 (Don't know what the equivalent is in US $!) I have resurrected mains powered (corded) power tools in the past. Seems to me that the boxes that mains powered tools are supplied in are so tight that the flex is forced to bend in order to get them back into their boxes. Metal fatigue causes the L, N and earth to break. Simplest thing is to dismantle strp down and re-wire. Thanks again.
Thanks for your posting! My issue turned out to be the yellow wire from the battery connection had been pinched between the two halves of the case after we replaced the brushes. Your video gave me a hint of another avenue to explore!
manual stupu - Thanks for saying that. Fist thing I said was, "YO! What is that, a 'plane' engine?" YES Way Cool! It's nice that [sometimes] i may just guess right. 1 point =]
Thanks so much. My driver quit this morning and I'm 25 miles from nowhere. I discovered the wire you showed had a bad solder joint. After resoldering it seems to be operational.
Thanks for the suggestions. I picked up a DeWalt with 1/2 chuck from the dumpster so this might get me a nice tool for next to nothing but time and effort
You were bang on my drill was doing the same and took it apart and it was a wire that had broken of the terminal you saved me €80 thanks alot great video 👍
I got lucky. After finding your page here I tried spraying the contacts electronic contact cleaner and it appears to have fixed the problem. I sprayed the battery and drill contacts. You could use WD40 as well I assume. Thanks for the tip
Great video. Took my impact driver apart for same symptoms. Turns out one of my smaller wires were loose at the circuit board. Ripped the plastic connector off and soldered straight to the board. BTW the extra two wires read 7volts across them, Im assuming these connect between cells to provide a lower voltage to power the computer circuit on the tool.
Thankyou! Just to add there are two positive cables coming off one of the larger terminals… it was one of these that had broken on mine and melted into the frame. Thanks again!
I've been using mine for 3 years and it started doing this when I was drilling thru the brick wall. Bought a new DeWalt set a month ago. A new drill is doing the same thing but it doesn't when I do reverse.
Hey Carl I bought a DCD999 TY1 about a year back and I've noticed the torque only works intermittently. I returned the first one I bought for another and it seems to be a design problem - just wondering if this issue is common or if mine are just from a bad batch. Let's say torque is set to 1. Minimal resistance should cause the drill to slip. If I set it to 1 and hold the chuck with my hand, it will slip on the first press of the trigger. If I press the trigger again it will turn with full force and not slip. I've learned the hard way a couple times for more delicate work, where I set a low torque setting and turned a screw way too tight when the it refused to slip.
My Dewalt 20 V pruning saw, as well as my other saw, started doing the same thing you’re showing here. Once the trigger is released, I have to take off the battery put it back on and then it works until I release the trigger. I’m going to try what you’re telling me here hopefully I get it rightand stop my complete frustration
Funny how I wasnt expecting this to be the same issue that my Porter Cable impact was having, but everything you described is literally what mine is doing. I might dig into it tomorrow and fix it instead of trying to hassle with the warranty.. Thanks man
Tristan I believe that Porter Cable, Black and Decker, and Dewalt are all under the same corporate umbrella. Please report back on your results! The “pull trigger, light flashes once” failure mode seems to indicate that the “3rd wire” is not making a good circuit from the circuit board in the battery to the trigger module in the tool. In my experience the #1 cause is a broken wire at the connection from the tool battery baseplate. This connection is usually soldered, and I think the solder makes the wire solid, and then the wire breaks at the transition from where the solder ends to the unsoldered stranded wire. Sometimes it is obvious, and sometimes this break is up inside the insulation a little bit! I always tug on the wire, or use a razor knife to cut the insulation back a bit to inspect. Good luck!
I have a DCCS620 chainsaw that acts like no battery is attached. Dewalt sent a new saw, but I don't want to just chuck the old one. I'll take it apart and see if this is the problem. The battery is not the problem as the two I now have powers the new saw on ok. I hesitate to take the thing apart as I probably won't be able to put it back together again!!! At any rate, thanks for the suggestion. I'll let you know if it works.
I was at homedepot today ready to buy the Xmas special left overs because I have this problem in 2 drills and the jig saw . Now I work the hell out of these tools so I am not mad at Dewalt . So I am hoping your fix works on my hammer drill because that sucker costs a lot. Going to start with the cheap drill before going into the hammer drill. I did not buy today because I noticed some are made in USA. So I will research that like a mission to Mars. Thanks for the starting point. Before I spend $200 bucs. 😄
Are any of these model DCD985? I have owned my DCD985 since brand new in mid-2012. Only used as a homeowner, not a contractor. For awhile now, maybe a couple of years (I don't use it everyday) it seemed as though the drill was not getting full-power. I attributed this to failing batteries as the original Dewalt batteries weren't holding charge for very long as of last year when I stopped using them they were about 9 years old. So I purchased brand new batteries which are very strong but the problem persists. I noticed that if I manipulate the trigger switch or squeeze really hard that I will once again get full power. So it seems like the switch is at fault or dirty. I understand I can purchase a replacement but most folks who replace them have NO operation of the drill at all. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile investigating or cleaning the switch if that is even possible? Or do you believe it to be simply worn out?
Thanks for letting me know the lose battery connection is normal ,my OCD was kicking in real good and was already gonna run to return my new dewalt hammer drill.
Watched your video thought worth a try I've got a 18volt drill same problem as the one you showed had it two years not used it as me old bosch is still my favourite. Took all side screws out plus the 4 screws from the front removed cover all wires seemed fine put the cover back on put battery in it worked fine kept trying all settings never missed a beat squeeze trigger would instantly turn he chuck variable speed worked fine put all side case in everything still perfect put the four Phillips screws back in the front it immediately went back to how it was light came on trigger hit and miss backed off the Phillips screws half a turn instant fix tightened screws again fault came back could it be those 4 screws pull the case to tight please try it and let me know
I just bought a dewalt kit with a drill and a impact driver the drill is fine but the impact has a little play in the battery and collet wobble would you take it back the battery isn’t real bad but it’s lots a little loose towards the back I find the wobble is a quite a bit I just got them so what would you do I imagine it will get worse as it gets older good video
Carl!it worked.in my case multitool stopped responding, just flashing light.opened up and what I found?snapped one of the middle cables.thx for your help
I had this same problem with my DCH253 SDS. Fixed it once just re-soldering. Worked well for while and then problem cropped up again. This time cut both wires back as far as possible (almost back to the potting on the trigger assembly) and soldered on new lengths of wire (same gauge and material) but didn't fix the problem. Any suggestions? I'm thinking of replacing the trigger assembly but not sure. Brushes are fine and tested armature. Getting even resistance throughout. Also I know its not the battery. Have tried with several.
I had this exact problem with my DCD785M2-QW. Have only owned it for 3 months and I've got 3 year extended warranty on the device so I had an authorized workshop fix it for me to not risk voiding warranty. They called me back the next day since they were done fixing it. Error report on the receipt said "Fixed intermittent connection at battery connector".
Carl My 20v hedge trimmer has ceased to work. I am thinking it is just the switch and module. I am wondering is it worth to have it fixed by a repair store or is it just easier to replace the switch and module or just pitch the trimmer! Please let me know
Could Jumping, (bypassing) those wires just to see if problem goes away work? Hard to see breakage, it would definitely tell you something. Unless - they must be incorporated in circuit for drill to run. Don't know a thing - just asking, so wording may be 'off'. THANKS!!
Those sense lines have to be there for the tool to work. This is why you can't use another brand battery on these tools even if it's a perfect fit physically it won't send the same info to the tool thru the sense lines.
Brilliant diagnostics & remedy! I have a 60v Max brushless Dewalt blower that is going on 5 years. Presently, whenever I take my finger off the trigger it slows down making a grinding kind of sound that would make one think it needs lubrication. Other than the grinding sound upon trigger release, it works fine. I suppose it's a matter of mechanical aging. ANY THOUGHTS?
Thanks. I was wondering which wire was what. Well, I have a dcf 899, when I pull the trigger it does absilutely nothing. The battery is good. I opened the case and saw one of the coils had a broken wire near the base of the coil. Is that normal?
Great video, thanks for uploading this. This is exactly what I am experiencing with my impact driver. I'm going to attempt this repair later this evening.
Have u encountered issues with the torque dial? Mine is stuck between hammer and standard drill. I can't let it dial to screw mode. I bought mine about 5 yrs ago. Its for home use, never been abused. Any suggestions on how to fix it?
I know it’s been 7 years since you’ve posted this and if the cameras timestamp is right which I doubt it was possibly 9 years since you filmed this but if it’s the battery pack and not the tool causing it would you go about the repair the same way? I have a pack that causes the same symptoms on every tool I put it on
Hello. I have a question-problem. The “Forward/Lock/Reverse” button on my Dewalt drill is VERY loose and flimsy, floppy. How can I correct, repair this? Is it easy or difficult? Please respond. Thank you so much. I appreciate it.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out or does it LOL great video man appreciate the information just had to put that in there because the beautiful background you have behind you
Thank you very much you have saved me from having to buy new drill ! The yellow wire has come away from soldering bad design for the price of these drills ..... 😡
Ok so clearly the problem here is that particular battery. My question is this how do you fix that battery? I have a 4ah, a new style 3ah and a 2ah all with this same problem. I’ve also had a few others in the past that I threw away. I kept these because they still power my small Bluetooth speaker but nothing else. They make the lights flicker but no power.
Carl, the video..... Totally awesome...Not being knowledgeable at all, I resolved the same issue by using a piece of black tape to build up "one" side of the battery charger tracks to the connectors.... and bingo. Apparently, one of the plastic tracks of the charger was not properly aligned on a new charger for 20vMAX :-/
I guess DW did this to secure good sensor signals. But copper will "work harden" and can eventually break. Proper crimping and some flexibility is better that soldering when it comes to vibration prone connections.
Thank you for the video, I had a DW multitool in for the exact problem, on mine the little battery connector wire had snapped off where it joins the motor control pack, hopefully I can reconnect it, other wise it is throw the tool away! Anyway, you certainly helped me, thanks.
Okay - i tried this :) - i had some tiny alligator clips since i had no flux for my son's soldering iron, so used them. And put it all back together, and it works just the same :(. Did you end up doing the second video about a second option? I don't think it's the battery, since the battery works fine in my impact driver. But the pooplessness of the trimmer is bumming me out since i really need it :). help? (and thank you for this video - very clear explanations, nice pacing, and made it very attemptable :))
Great tip, thanks for sharing it us, and the “made a liar outta me” humility is authentic- props for that!! But what I really want to know is where does the flux capacitor fit inside your jet engine (background). Curious minds wanna know!
saw a recent video that people were not clicking the battery tightly onto the charger. the light will come on briefly then go off after you walk away. you grab the bttery and it is actully dead.
You sir are my hero! I have 4 impacts in the loaner tool box for noobies and they all do this! Fixing them all tonight! Had some of them for over 10 years though so I still buy dewalt, hopefully they fix this issue
Hi Carl,I just got an aftermarket battery for my dewalt drill, screw gun, and saw....it's doing the same thing you demonstrated in your video. In your video you said the fault may be with the battery. I think this is the case with mine, as the genuine Dewalts work 100%. Are you going to make a video on repairing these batteries? Thanks,Patrick
Patrick Rutherford did you figure out why your battery had this same symptom? I ran over my drill/battery and pulled a couple wires apart. After I fixed the drill the battery still powered the drill but the led indicator did not. Pulled the battery apart and repaired the indicator and now the battery doesn't power either drill. Just turns the led on for a half second, same symptom here.
After I got the battery back together after I checked all the solder points, I didn't have power to the TB terminal and it just turned the drill Led on. So, I used the old fashioned slam it on the bench a few times and bingo, it works again and that terminal reads like its supposed to. I opened it again and it stopped working again. Slammed it again on the bench and it works. No idea why, but that worked for me.
Shelby Whitten I know this is an old post but in case it helps someone else out. To get the handle halves apart you have to take the 4 screws out of the gearbox and wiggle it a little in order to slide it forward.
MY DCD791 is practically brand new and won't go into high speed and grinds and stalls when under load; yes the batt is fully charged. First DeWalt I have ever bought! NOT a good start...prob been used less than three times. Going back to Milwaukee!
Thanks man im having this issue with two new drills i bought. I got a special on this Dewalt 2 drill pack and unfortunately only used it about once and im having this issue. But once i move the battery pack tight on the drill or upwards it works but still tends to stop randomly. Just a question I didn’t understand what you ment on how to fix the wire? Can you explain that to me again. Please and thank you
Thought i had a switch issue the light would flash quickly when the trigger was pressed but no motor.. jumped the wire on the battery positive to the brown wire and it worked, stripped the shrink wrap off and the wire was still attached, but found broken right below the wire sheathing, stripped and re soldered works great.. years later your video still helps, much appreciated!!
when you talk about fixing something, and your background jet enggine, we trust you
So true....lol
I got to say, how many blokes have a jet engine in their workshop. Awesome.
LMAO!! I was wondering what the hell that was. Frigging hilarious
😂😂😂
pro tip : watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using it for watching all kinds of movies recently.
Not many people can say they have a jet engine in their garage... And because of that you got a new subscriber !
You just saved me 250 bucks! I took my impact apart expecting a cold solder or something and couldn't find anything wrong... I've just fixed my multi tool thanks to this video, saved me buying a new one, thank you so much
I am just about to try the same thing on my multi tool!
Thank you so much! My Multitool stopped this afternoon and the symptom was just as you described. Thank you for the guidance! Exactly the same issue. All back to normal!

This is EXACTLY what was wrong with my 20V Dewalt blower.
You are a life saver.......
Brilliant video and advice thanks. Just opened up my DCD785 combi drill as per the video and found the broken wire (brown in this case) on one of the two inner terminals.
Re soldered it and it's good to go.
Saved me the cost of a new carcas thanks.
Just needed this fix, so a late thank you for the info to fix my blower issue. Nice background engine as well!!

I know this video is old, but I used it to fix my dewalt oscillating multi tool, worked perfectly!
Thanks so much. My driver quit this morning and I'm 25 miles from nowhere. I discovered the wire you showed had a bad solder joint. After resoldering it seems to be operational.

Switch cleaner works wonders on those battery terminals that are modelled after a 'Jones Connector' which is / was used by the military.
This was exactly my situation, even with a fairly new drill. You video is perfect. DeWalt wanted $75 to repair
I got lucky. After finding your page here I tried spraying the contacts electronic contact cleaner and it appears to have fixed the problem. I sprayed the battery and drill contacts. You could use WD40 as well I assume. Thanks for the tip

My impact drill has a loose battery connector harness. Could you sugesst a fix?
My drill exhibits this malfunction right out of the box, so I doubt it's a result of vibration in my case.
Palouse Aikido flat battery
Thanks. I was wondering which wire was what. Well, I have a dcf 899, when I pull the trigger it does absilutely nothing. The battery is good. I opened the case and saw one of the coils had a broken wire near the base of the coil. Is that normal?
my dewalt half inch 24 volt hand drill has a trigger stuck in can i lube it or anything to free it up?
Didn't hear a word that you said. I was fascinated with the jet engine;-)
My DCL040 flash light is not working. Can you get and replace the LED/BULB on one of these? Tks
Great video, thanks for uploading this. This is exactly what I am experiencing with my impact driver. I'm going to attempt this repair later this evening.

Damn this guys side projects must be wild, the Jet engine says it all
Do you know how to replace motor assembly on dewalt compact bandsaw
Intact wires in mine and still has this problem. Any thoughts please? Thanks
I have a dw996 cordless drill. The fwd/rev lever is really loose. Drill only works in reverse.
I have a drill that's misaligned like that. A real pain in the ass, that.
This is happening to my impact driver is it the same thing as this?
Want to try this as my out of warranty 20 volt chainsaw is out of warranty and of course just stopped working. But I can't get the damn thing apart.
So good!
Thanks for the help!
I guess DW did this to secure good sensor signals. But copper will "work harden" and can eventually break. Proper crimping and some flexibility is better that soldering when it comes to vibration prone connections.
Old video just saved me 100 bucks. Could use a better mic though...hard to hear ya...but thanks you helped.
my problem solved, thanks alot.
Thank you for the video, I had a DW multitool in for the exact problem, on mine the little battery connector wire had snapped off where it joins the motor control pack, hopefully I can reconnect it, other wise it is throw the tool away! Anyway, you certainly helped me, thanks.
Had the same problem at the motor
Just found this video. Great help, but can you explain the jet engine in your garage? WTH?
Can I fix just the light in my 20v screw gun?
I got drill with same problem, when I looked the wire wasn't broke but was a bit hard , would that be the problem? Cheers
Great video. Took me straight to my problem.
Many thanks indeed, that was so helpful.
Thank you! Spot on with the problem on my bad saw. Save me $115.
I have a dce 100 floor having a reason why it would just power surge it won't run up full speed it just surges on and off thank you
did you take this drill apart for a battery issue?
I have the same problem, how do I fix the battery?
what caused dewalt brushless drill not to work when press the trigger
Hello a question where can I purchase the motor switch for the dcd796 20v
You sir are my hero! I have 4 impacts in the loaner tool box for noobies and they all do this! Fixing them all tonight! Had some of them for over 10 years though so I still buy dewalt, hopefully they fix this issue
Was it the issue?
Hi Carl, does your angle drill get very hot as mine has but as yet has not burned out or anything, but does get worryingly hot. 👍🇬🇧
Gotta big heater behind ya. How warm does it keep your building :)
No, I gave up and just got another battery pack. $55 down the drain.
No idea why, but that worked for me.
how do I get the handle apart? it won't pull apart at the bottom of handle. where battery inserts??
Shelby Whitten I know this is an old post but in case it helps someone else out. To get the handle halves apart you have to take the 4 screws out of the gearbox and wiggle it a little in order to slide it forward.
omg thats exactly what has happened to mine,,,, so tomorrow morning guess what ill be doing?.... great vid
MY DCD791 is practically brand new and won't go into high speed and grinds and stalls when under load; yes the batt is fully charged. First DeWalt I have ever bought! NOT a good start...prob been used less than three times. Going back to Milwaukee!
My 20v dewalt chainsaw just quit working. Could this be my problem too?
I'm having the same problem with new tools
Think we can make that jet engine fit in my 2017 Fiesta???
Oh, and by the way, we’re just not gonna talk about that giant jet engine in the background? Cool
My Dewalt 20v Brushless dcf886 light doesn't turn off,, have you ran into this problem
Solved my problem. Thank you!
Great to hear Jacob! the signal wire isn't always the problem but when it is this is a good fix.
Please and thank you
those two smaller terminals are for the battery cell sensors they tell the drill when to stop working so you dont drain the battery down to much.
Is it possible to repair or replace those two cell sensors?
