    Imagine a scorebug looking so bad, so ugly, and so confusing that it gets changed in the middle of the game, and gets changed in the second half. Well, to open up the 2019 NFL season on Monday Night Football on ESPN, in a battle between the Houston Texans and the New Orleans Saints, that's exactly what happened. The scorebug looked so bad and was hated by everyone that it got changed in the middle of the game. This is the in-depth story behind that

    Rumor was that the reason they were able to make the change so quickly is that even internally, the issues were brought up before the game, yet some higher up still wanted it, but the people actually producing the game knew it wouldn't work, and had the other version created in the event they were vindicated by the fans.

      Bally Sports did this too when they took over Fox Sports. That WOULD get confusing, especially for college sports when dealing with obscure teams you may not necessarily know by logo alone. I have to wonder who thought THAT was a good idea and approved it, speaking about Bally. Kinda makes the nicknames era of MNF mentioned here look like the best scorebug ever in comparison.

    Ngl, I feel like the reaction to this score bug was a bit over-the-top. I agree that making both the down and distance graphic and the penalty graphic pretty close to the same color was unnecessary as hell, but I could distinguish between a regular play and one that was flagged pretty easily.
    The fact that the word “flag” came up to replace the down and distance graphic made it pretty clear in my mind which play was which, not even mentioning the other indicators that point to a flag being thrown.
    I can understand taking a play or two to understand what the broad cast was doing since the two graphics were pretty similar in color, but idk how people were so confused for an entire quarter or even a whole half.
    I think it was the right decision to axe the lime coloring for the down and distance graphic, but it never confused me.

    I hate this scorebug, bro. From the very start, as I was watching the footage, my eyes kept getting drawn to the bottom right corner by the down and distance change because it looked like a flag on the play. Even after I knew there wasn't., I kept checking.

  • @jasonfischer8946
    @jasonfischer8946 11 месяцев назад

    The scorebug is really overanalyzed. I want to see the score, time, quarter, timeouts, possession, and teams, all clearly and all at the bottom of the screen out of the way. No cutsie animations, no elaborate logos and fonts. It's not Looney Tunes. It's a football game.

      yeah i don't get it either, if it was a penalty, it would say flag, thats what you look for, not the color. i watched this game when it happened & i wasn't confused at all, i didn't even notice the 2nd half change because the color didn't mean anything, what it says matters

      when we see yellow as football fans we associate it with a flag. So when you see a flash of yellow out of the corner of your eyes on every play you think there's a flag.
