    Gideon's not just crazy with the whole freezing all his exes and wanting to date all one day. It's theme.
    Scott forgets all his mistakes, never carrying any baggage and never learning from his mistakes. His growth comes from learning to internalise lessons and not constantly run away form all his flaws. What's the total inverse of that? A person who never lets any part of the past leave, insists exes for Leagues, and who wants all his old relationships to happen concurrently forever. Gideon can't let anything go, and so he can't change or learn.

  • @sauleiwanderapfelstrudel

    Not gonna lay, I really like that the movie stated that self respect is greater than love. The whole movie (and book) is about unhealthy relationships and how much they can damage you, it just felt so cathartic

    • @dominicadriaanse535
      @dominicadriaanse535 Месяц назад

      Saw you comment and have to say, self respect is self love and acceptance. Scott can't fight Gideon until his accepted the worst/bad parts of himself. Becuase how can you love someone else when you can't infact love/accept parts of yourself.

    To me, Gideon's use of the glow always read as extreme emotional abuse. Cut people off from their friends, gaslight them, trap them in a cycle of dependence and depression, keep them bound to you forever in a prison they think is their own making.

    My personal interpretation of why Scott was killed but the others weren't is...intent. Scott never intended to kill anyone, thus did indeed never kill anyone, while Gideon DEFINITELY wanted Scott dead, and thus Scott died from being run through instead of just respawning like everyone else

      my interpertreation is its a weaponising of a person's inability to grow, Gideon using it to stop people from growing past their negative qualities and bettering themselves and becoming stuck into being themselves at their worst, so Scott becomes more cowardly and selfish and Ramona becomes less self-aware and mroe jugemental of others and herself becomes cowardly. Notably, Gideon himself states the Glow doesn't effect him and we see he is pretty much ALREADY at his worst and knows it and doesn't give a SHIT.

    also if i had to explain why Scott's re-spawn rules work like a playable character, i would say is probably because he's the one being challenged by the evil Exes (thus making him the playable character), so he probably re-spawns normally in any other situation

      My opinion on Nega Scott is that he's truly the last Evil Ex. Scott was technically Ramona's last boyfriend, so there had to be some kind of embodiment of him. Namely of Scott's immaturity, selfishness, and past mistakes. The fight between the two ends in the way it does because Scott realizes he was a bad person and gains self respect, therefore "defeating" Nega Scott (his past self.)

    Everyone spends a bit of time in afterlife limbo after dying, and then respawns, and Scott would have respawned, having lost his last chance to fight for Ramona.

Gideon six ex-girlfriend, which are sealed away in crystals, are also a reference to the plot of the game (the six female descendants of the old wise people were kept in similar looking crystals and the seventh was Princess Zelda, who was captured at the mid-point of the game.).

    One other (grim) movie Nega-Scott idea. From the premise that Nega-versions of oneself embody your own worst nature - Scott saying Nega-Scott is a pretty decent guy is Scott excusing/downplaying his own faults. Saying he doesn't need to change because those qualities aren't toxic but actually kinda endearing.

    The idea of the Comic Scott Filter still kinda works, its just the intent that changes. Narratives like to point to leaving childish or immature mindsets behind being preferable, but usually because those mindsets ARE actually toxic to a character. With Scott, having come to terms with his negative side just means he can put that filter and personality to good use.
    Just a thought while I wait for the conclusion to Dom vs Sub.

  • @loneronin6813
    @loneronin6813 5 лет назад +11

    While I do love the way the comic handled the Nega-Scott plotline and it was well done, I also really like the film's way almost as much. I like that he actually just talks it out with his darker half and not only accepts it, but befriends it. I haven't seen the movie all the way through just yet, but I like to imagine that the conversation took hours where Scott and Nega-Scott had a serious, heart-breaking, tear-filled, but fulfilling and worthwhile, able to accept one another as buddies.
    I've actually had experiences in my life where enemies have become people who, while not my friends, have come to a point where both them and I gained some amount of respect and understanding of one another. While I don't really relate to Scott at all when it comes to the drinking, way of handling and mixing relationships, or having friends for that matter, but there was something I did have in common in a way. I was bullied to the point where the kids from school who also happened to live in my neighborhood would sometimes track me down after I would get off the bus and sometimes it would turn into fights.
    By senior year of high school, I was an emotional powder keg, and my way of handling bullies and attackers had turned from not backing down but remaining otherwise indifferent to using humor against them, which apparently only seemed to spur them on. At the time, I was too naïve, socially inept, and mentally affected by their traumatizing abuse that I was blinded to the fact that in retrospect, my using humor to repel them was only really me pushing their buttons and validating their desire for a fight. I was my own worst enemy on that one I guess, and given that I went to a horrible school where even the faculty members didn't do anything about bullying cases and refused to see my condition (an advanced case of Tourette's Syndrome) as anything more than me somehow, "Disturbing the class," I couldn't go to them for aide, and so I had to learn to be my own advocate the hard way, and it didn't usually go well.
    These problems continued through my early college years because although I had begun to learn from my mistakes slowly but surely, a lot of my bullies from high school went to the same college I was attending. The first thing I did was make the staff aware of my troubles and did all I could to have them do something about it. A meeting was held between the staff and the bullies who continued to harass and start confrontations with me...and I wasn't even allowed to be in the room while it was conducted. I never got the chance to explain my side to those who were called in to hear what was supposed to be what would determine my future there. The worst of my bullies convinced them that he was trying to, "make friends," with me, and every last one of my bullies got off free of punishment because the situation was deemed as an unprovable case of, "He-said-she-said."
    I was done putting up with it, and I knew that had I stayed there I would have either gotten into trouble for further fights, or possibly even been pushed over the brink of insanity. I eventually left of my own accord, and the school erased my grades, which had gotten so bad from a combination of frequent illness, serious insomnia, and poor attendance to classes that resulted from my previously mentioned problems. I ended up going to a joke of a community college near my hometown, where I almost got my associate's degree before I suffered a serious back injury that now has left me with chronic back pain and all my money went to medical bills for various treatments that didn't work, but that's a different story entirely.
    How does this connect back to how I relate to certain aspects of Scott's character? Just like Scott did, I was handling my problems by charging in head-first, both fists swinging, all the while thinking that I was standing up to my tormentors the only way possible. In the end, I was only making myself a bigger target on top of losing myself and my sanity to my problems. Like Scott, I eventually was able to work out things in my mind and learned to find myself again, accepting and owning up to my past mistakes along the way. Sure, I haven't had some kind of glorious final battle, but I did become a better person for it.
    One thing about that portal they both jump into together, I have my own thought as to what it may symbolize. The way I see it, that portal that seems to lead to who knows what is possibly representative of two people who love each other despite going through past ordeals both on their own as well as together are jumping into an unknowable future with infinite possibilities...together.
    Anyway, this has been a really wonderful series of videos on these comics/this movie, and since The Dom took the time to share a bit of himself in said videos, I wanted to open up a bit of myself and my own way of relating the protagonist of this comic series, for better or worse. While I apologize for my comment being so ungodly long, I don't feel sorry for sharing it in the first place. To those who have taken their time to read up to this point, thank you for your patience and I hope you all find happiness and success in your lives. ^_^

    I think Nega Scott can be more fully understood if you take the game into account. In the comic, Scott accepts that the shitty stuff he's done is a part of who he is and merges with it.In the movie, he confronts his bad side peacefully, accepting that it is there but simply moving on. In the game, he doesn't come to terms with it at all, murdering his bad side and never growing as a person. Scotts ending in the game is a downer, with him breaking up with Ramona and never finding love again. This is reinforced by Ramonas ending, where when SHE defeats Nega Scott(interpret able as her coming to terms with and accepting Scotts past) their relationship works out. It's honestly my favorite part of Scott Pilgrim as a whole, and the most interesting to think about personally.

    To answer something about the books' and movie's chicken-and-the-egg symbiotic relationship, there was a behind the scenes clip of Bryan O'Malley visiting the studio and saw some of the productions notes for the costumes. He was impressed with the dress Ramona wore for the final act, thinking it was something Ramona would definitely wear, and modeled the outfit she wore in the final book after it.

    22:40 I think it's because Scott just gave up and had no motivation at that moment. The main character getting a pep talk after the villain is beating him in final battle (if you need an example, Thor Ragnorok "you are not the god of hammers, what are you/ Electrocutes Hela" moment). Scott regressed in vol 6 and now is about to just give up...then Ramona shows up.

    I think the Nega-Scott is another video game reference tied to its real life origins. He is a "Shadow", the repressed emotions and thoughts of a person which left out of control can cause serious issues with a person's mental health. On when Scott confronts it and accepts it he is able to obtain the facade to face life's hardships (or "Persona"). The concept comes from a particular school of psychology.

    I think book Nega-Scott is a lot simpler than what you're trying to make of him. Scott literally explains it in dialog. He states that killing Nega-Scott would erase his memories of Ramona, and what had happened. Scott basically has an ability to split off a part of his memories, and manifest it as an independent being, which he can then defeat in order to erase those memories. In other words, it is Scott himself which is summoning Nega-Scott as a coping method.
    Nega-Scott is NOT a product of the glow, as Gideon himself notes that Scott's mind is unusually empty, which is why he had to fill it with the fake memories. Every time Scott's mind is shown, it is represented by an empty desert, which references the fact that Scott has been removing all the memories from there. Contrast with Ramona's head, which is far more populated. It would also explain why his head made for such an excellent roadway for Ramona to use.
    Just before Scott merges with Nega-Scott, he recalls memories of Ramona, probably because they are at close proximity at the time, and that specific Nega-Scott represents Scott's memories of Ramona. Realizing that there are some good memories in there, he basically decides he doesn't want to forget Ramona. Merging with Nega-Scott basically gives him back all of his memories, including ones he had previously erased. This is why, after merging, he ends up remembering everything. All the memories he previously suppressed, by defeating previous Nega-Scotts.
    The implication here is that every time something bad happened, or he did something bad, he created, and then defeated, another Nega-Scott.

    I am really surprised that the common RL interpretation is that dark to make scott into a serial killer. - Personally when I had watched the movie I just interpreted all the fights as Scott having to overcome insecurities when randomly meeting Ramona's Ex Boyfriends for stuff that in his mind makes them better than him, like beeing a Vegan, Great Actor, or being able to do awesome Bollywood Dance moves, while he himself cannot do any of that stuff, and overall being rather a loser.

    I actually really like the idea that movie Scott has more power with self-respect than love. While his whole story revolved around getting Ramona, and the hardship he needed to face in doing so, he was ultimately doomed to fail until he managed to stabilize himself emotionally. Without that self respect, he would have lacked the confidence to go into any of these fights, or to rebound when pushed deep into a corner.
    It also probably makes more sense the comic Scott gets understanding, while film Scott got self-respect as their respective upgrades:
    - The comic spends a lot more time analyzing Scott on a social level, his friendships, romances, family, etc., so mastering understanding would mean he has achieved the point where he realizes what his actions have done to the people around him.
    - Film Scott is relatively bereft of these past crimes, and more focus is put on his childishness and lack of direction, hence why fighting for Ramona was so important for him. Finding self-respect means that he has self-actualization and drive in life of his own accord, which is really well shown - in my opinion - by how he disposes of the thugs Gideon sick on him much more quickly on his second go. He has more confidence in his actions and a much more personal stake in this.
    It's all very context dependent, but I like the direction the film went with it, especially considering the change in character focus it has compared to the books.

    On how Nega-scott came to be: I've always thought he was created as a side effect of Gideon's messing and the glow combined, which is kind of fitting as Nega-scott is portrayed as a shadow, something that a light causes objects to cast. I mean, just think about what Scott would have been like during the memories that were repressed. Imagine all those memories confined into one place under a light source that allows people to enter and exit a mystical place that is powered by emotions at will, wouldn't something like that eventually have enough raw power to escape from that place, and since they are Scott's memories they manifested as him
    Edit: (while I'm here) I never saw the glow as just depression, rather all of the easier to manipulate emotions (depression, guilt, sadness, etc.) that could keep someone under Gideon's emotionally manipulative control

    The idea that, at least in this context, self-respect is a stronger force than love makes sense to me. A kind not coming from any sort of bravado, but from trusting yourself and growing as a person.

    to put it up for the record, I think The Glow is not so much DEPRESSION, but rather a weaponised form of forcing people to be unable to grow, to never be able to better themselves and learn from their mistakes, and instead double down on their worst traits, ignore their faults and run away from anything that challenges them. It basically ssuppresses self awareness, stops someone from recognising their bad traits, and causing them to become stunted, entitled, selfish and unaware of their toxicc qualities. The Glow makes Scott mroe cowardly, more unwilling to accept his faults and to reinvent scenarios where he's a hero, and it also makes Ramona judgemental of others, unwilling to accept her own faults and hand in events and makes her more likely to run away when things get tough. Of course, the glow doesn't CREATE these traits, it just makes them stronger and suppresses anything that would make the characters become aware of themselves and strive to be better.
    And my take on Nega-Scott is that he represents Scott's self awareness, not his memories or whatever but his acceptance of his bad qualities, and a desire to be punished for them. Merging with scott means scott accepts his past mistakes and strives to change, without ignoring them or just blaming and punishing himself.

  • @Randerson2409
    @Randerson2409 5 лет назад +2

    Actually, the theory of Scott confronting the personificaction of his sins, this rings true in both the comic and film. Speaking as someone in that situation, we can create constructs that personify our own failings.

    I don't believe the Negascott is related to Gideon's glow or Gideon using Scott's subspace highway. The glow most likely made the Negascott worse but that's a demon Scott's been wrestling with since middle school most likely. All Gideon did was mess with any of Scott's remaining memories like the Kim Pines high school boyfriend incident.

    I hope you touch on the alternate movie ending since I think it adds a lot more to the end of the movie than the one they went with. Also, I kind of think having the extra life is what prevented Scott from turning into coins. He was sort of in his head because he was reloading, or he just needed to hit start. I like to think if he didn't have the extra life already, then he would have turned into coins.

    Your explanation of the glow is ultimately my biggest issue with the comics; it is where O'Malley's newness as a writer really showed. I get much of the comic can be taken both literally and non-literally, but the glow ends being too convoluted, contradicts other parts of the story, and ultimately makes the story a bit of a narrative mess. It feels like O'Malley needed a good, experienced editor to help him trim its part in the story back and to ensure it what focused on what he really wanted it to say, as opposed to him trying to include everything about it. I do like the comics, but it is clear O'Malley was still finding his feet when writing them.
