Guys Ask, Girls Tell: Periods

  • We all know about Aunt Flo. You know, the Crimson Wave; Shark Week. That thing half the population gets, but remains a mystery to the rest.
I’m talking periods - that time of the month, not the punctuation.
We gave Journal men the option to submit any questions they have about menstruation. Surprisingly, despite the anonymity, there were no trolls. The questions ranged from, “Is it a consistent drip or more of an all-in-one-go situation?” to “Does your period ever make you feel empowered? Like do you start bleeding and then put on Shania Twain's hit "Man, I feel like a woman" or any other female-proud jams?”
To answer these pressing questions, we rallied together a panel of experts: uterus-havers. As you can imagine, there was a lot of hysterical laughter.

Sometimes I get so angry when people tell me that "being on your period" isn't a proper excuse for staying home in bed. I used to get fevers and get cramps so bad that I'd throw up. I'd lie on the floor for about 2 hours just crying because I'd become pretty much physically immobile. And then people told me "come on, doesn't this happen every month?" YES EXACTLY so leave me alone, I know how to handle it by now. Luckily I went to the doctor and got pills so my cramps are a lot more manageable, but it still pisses me off when people don't understand that I sometimes feel fatigued and just wanna sleep.

+threasa arangamparambil so let me get this straight. If someone has, like, a serious disease or if they were born with a missing arm they have no right to complain about how much it bothers them? Do you think we spend all our time complaining about our periods? Do you think those two comment were us complaining about out PERIODS??? I'm 19, I've had my period since I was 12 I know how to fucking handle it by now, what I was complaining about is people like you who don't GET that even if it happens every month IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY! It's like saying "hey, you've broken your arm before right, why are you complaining?" Maybe because it hurts. It's not like we think it'll change anything but it's nice to talk to someone who knows what it's like. I rarely ever complain about it because it won't change anything, but I will damn well complain about people who tell me it's no big deal. I'm just minding my own laying at home throwing up once a month. YOU WANNA SWITCH? No? Then SHUT UP!

    • @MilieNopeNotHere
      @MilieNopeNotHere 8 лет назад +118

+threasa arangamparambil don't tell me to power through, do you really think that that's not what I'm doing? I get a 40*C fever once a month, I throw up, I cry but I don't complain about it I just let it happen because what can I do. But when people tell me "come on, let's get a drink, it's just a period why don't you just power through?" I get fucking pissed because you don't know what it feels like. And even though you say that it's not to be taken personal it is freaking personal when you tell us to "just power through" because people like you are exactly the problem that we complain about.
Neither one of us complained about our periods, we complained about ignorant people. So please don't tell us to just power through, because that's exactly what we're doing.

i got my first period in eighth grade. i was in 9th period technology and my stomach hurt really bad but i thought it was just my usual pain (i have a digestive problem). anyways, i had to pee so i went to the bathroom and sat down and as soon as i saw my underwear i screeched, periods were completely out of my mind at the time and i thought i was dying because back then my stomach issues hadn't been explained and i thought there was something horribly wrong with me. next thing i know, i'm hearing the male earth science teacher in the women's bathroom's doorway saying "is everything alright in there ?" luckily, i remembered what periods were and answered back a horrified "yeah".
so, i began to assess the situation. i was wearing a white dress and i started freaking out and just my luck, when i checked the back of it there was a line about the width of a quarter on my butt. yeah, really fun. i started freaking out, it was spring and i didn't have any other clothes at school (ex. jacket, coat) and there was no way i was gonna walk around with blood on my arse. luckily though, i think the world decided to throw me a bone, when walked out of the bathroom and i saw this guy that i didn't know _that_ well back then because he's 2 years older than me but i had a tini crush on him at the time. now, you would think that this would be a horrible situation, that i would be mortified, etc. but even though it was embarrassing af at the time, i'm glad it happened.
he kindly informed me of the mark even though i already knew and offered me one of his sweaters to wrap around my waist. he was super nice and even gave me his chocolate that apparently was in his lunch that he wanted to save for later. he helped me find his older sister and she hooked me up with some tampons so that i'd be okay. long story short, he was super kind and even walked me back to technology, telling the technology teacher that we had to help a kid who'd gotten sick in the hallway so that i wouldn't be in trouble for being so late.
i'm fairly good friends with him now but i've fallen in love with him over the years. he's kind, funny, creative, cute, and talented, i mean, what do you expect ? kinda sucks cause i don't think he'll never see me that way but atleast i got to know him. weirdly enough, i have my first period to thank for that.
so, uh, thank you womanhood...i guess

@@notsuredc girls...using a tampon is not you losing your virginity. That makes no sense. Are you worried about the hymen? Its a thin bit of tissue some women have that surround the vaginal wall. It is not a coverings. Furthermore when it "tears" if it does if you have one you most likely wont even know. A gynecologist cannot even look at you and tell if you've lost your virginity. You only lose that by having a penis in your vagina. I have used all three, pads tampons and a diva cup. I dispised pads because they smell and are bulky in your underwear so people know you wear one. Tampons are completely safe unless left in your vagina for days which is why they recommend 6-8 hours because they know 12-24 hours is safe but people always push past time limits. Periods have only recently become more talked about. Tampons also do not hurt, nor do they move once inserted. It is completely fine to choose whatever works for your body, but dont be ignorant

I thought it had been because I had been standing, and sitting in uncomfortable chairs. At my senior school they gave the girls a talk about periods in year 7. In year 10, both girls and boys got sex education, which covered 'growing up', Pregnancy, and the birth of a baby, and VD. (Sexually transmitted diseases. Some girls thought the boys shouldn't have been there when the teacher was talking about periods. I said to one of them 'What are you going to do hen you're married? Pretend you are ill every month?

But it is way better to be congratulated on something than being treated impure on those days and be all secretive about it and lie to people and pretend being alright on the outside when you are literally dying inside. At least, some people acknowledge it and at the least try to understand. I am a woman myself.
If only I had those kinds of people around me who would say, even if I don't understand your pain, but I acknowledge it. You are in pain and I feel you and see you. I wish for you to recover fast and have strength to go through this.

    My first period story:
I was on family vacation, (it's September of my 7th grade year of school, btw) and I went into the bathroom to get dressed and there was blood in my underwear. So I changed and then went into the master bedroom where my mom was finishing getting ready (makeup and stuff like that) and I asked her "do you have a pad?" She sighed and was like "no I didn't bring any. I just finished my period. go ask your sister". I had asked my mom for a pad while my dad and siblings were out doing something because I didn't want people to know, I was kind of embarrassed, so it was just my luck that my sister had gone with my dad, so I had to wait until they all got back to ask. When I asked, my family started laughing... and then my sister said "no, I forgot them. I needed to bring them because I'm supposed to start soon, but I don't have any". That's just my luck... LUCKILY my mom had an emergency one in her purse that she had forgotten about at first but found it before we left for the day. It was too big, but it was something. So, before we went to the Grand Canyon (which again, just my luck, we're going to be walking around ALL DAY) we went to the grocery store and got some pads for both me and my sister. So yeah. That my first period story. That was quite the uncomfortable trip

Oof my period story isn't completely insane like others, but it was bad.
It was 3 a.m. and I woke up, thinking I just peed my pants. I was so tired that after I used the bathroom, I didn't even notice the blood in my underwear.
*I went back to bed and woke up five minutes later practically whisper screaming.*

Does anybody else get that feeling of dread when you know you're going to get your period sometime during the week and you don't which day because it changes every time? And then you go out without using a pad or tampon cuz you're sure it's not that day and yes it is and you have to go home because you left your supplies there because you're too stupid to carry that stuff with you? I was 11 years old. My mom was in France with my dad, and my sister was at work. I came home from school and felt weird (damn cramps) so I hung out in a pile of blankets by myself. Later, my brother takes me to swim practice (I was on a swim team). I’m early cause I thought dry lands was that night but it wasn’t. Like 15 min before practice starts, I go to the bathroom. I wipe and realize, oh shoot that’s blood. I spend the next few minutes in a panic, then put on my warm stuff to call me sister outside (I don’t have service inside the building). My sister doesn’t pick up, at first, she’s at work. So I call my mom. It’s like 3 am in France, and she still managed to pick up. Then I got called back by my sister, who ended up telling me to call my brother to pick me up, cause she won’t be home for another half hour. My brother picks me up, far earlier than expected and seems confused. I hadn’t told him why to pick me up, and neither did my sister, so I had to explain to my brother that I had gotten my first period and needed to get home. I had no supplies either, cause two months prior the doctor told me I probably won’t get my period for a while longer. It was one hell of a Friday night.

Even if my mother had been more encouraging about tampons, I would have wanted to use pads for the first few months until I got used to the idea of periods. She told me I'd have to see a doctor if I wanted to use tampons, and I had visions of the doctor using a scalpel to remove my hymen! I finally plucked up the courage to use a tampon at age 17, and regretted all the swimming lessons I missed for over 5 years. My mother grew up in the days when a woman was expected to 'prove' her virginity at marriage with a good show of blood on the bed sheets.

He asked me how often you get a period and I said every month. He was shocked.
