I can foresee two AIs discussing something at a totally conversational symbolic language level. Sort of, entirely encrypted to man's attempt to break into the conversation, the code so to speak, in order to get to understand what they're talking about and discussing formatively.
This comment reminds me of an interview. He had a 95. Everyone was angry or laughing at him about this "internet trend" You sound just like those morons
i'm not sure why this isn't already a thing, we have the technology for it. gpt4-o can recognize your voice and emotion, and can translate spoken language almost instantly. just train it on dogs' body language as well, and bam.
somebody will definitely work on this. About current research, not sure about cats and dogs, but i know that some scientists are using AI to understand language of whales, because we have a lot of data of their communication.
@@hawksandwich4742It is not that simple, unfortunately. The purpose of AI translation between animals and humans would presumably be to give us unique insight into what animals are communicating to us, and for them to understand what we are communicating to them. However, to the best of our ability (and theirs) we already do that when we communicate directly with animals and vice versa. Aside from highly intelligent animals like whales and dolphins, most communication with animals is non- verbal. Or in some cases, as with chimpanzees, their vocabulary is small enough that it’s manageable without AI. There is nothing an AI can tell you about your cat’s intent when it meows that you can’t already interpret yourself. And the cat can’t express its intention directly to the AI any better than it can express it to you. There is no internet of animal content for AI to train on, and no way for animals to provide feedback for reinforcement learning at scale to train an AI. AI can only observe and interpret their intent as we do, based on human created training data. As any owner of multiple cats or dogs knows, they don’t have a common verbal or written language that they use to communicate with each other. Nor do they care. They smell each other, express aggression and affection, play with one another and even get jealous when one gets something the other wants. But they don’t exchange ideas or make plans with each other. They don’t tell each other stories or talk about what happened at the dog park.
I guess it shouldn't be that hard to build something that could understand certain animal species, but to build something to make them understand us is harder, maybe we could do that by training them to understand some keywords, like Pawlow did with his dogs, but thats it. There is a reason why most animals haven't overthrown us already, which means they might not be able to understand a language at all, and would rather communicate through smell, gesture and instinct. Maybe this translation would work for great apes, a few advanced mammals.
@@dannylifted9441 Or because his plans would scare everyone into an uprising. Why does he own so much farmland now? What about the 38 new pathogens he's invested in?
when he said we have “probably two more turns of the crank” i think he’s referring to the expected jumps in compute and data for new GPT generations. for example, GPT-2 had 1.5 billion parameters and required several thousand petaflop/s-days of compute. GPT-3, with 175 billion parameters, needed around 3640 petaflop/s-days-a 100x jump. GPT-4, at around 1 trillion parameters, needed even more compute and data, likely in the terabyte range. Gates knows Microsoft can achieve two more 100x jumps in compute and data because, well, it’s Microsoft. They have vast infrastructure, deep pockets, and the talent. He did say “probably” though and that’s most likely because that amount of compute would require standing up full on power plants (10 gigawatts at that scale) and that’s insane. I think nyc doesn’t use that much power.

I want that too. I was diagnosed 18 month ago and now I am taking massive steps to improve my executive functions. Such a system would help me compensate some of the lost time and opportunities. I am already collecting data (journal entries, notes, blog articles, emails and so on) with which I plan to feed the system when it's installed. So it won't have to start from scratch.
I have some if my own "Oscar Wilde-ish" quotes for these type discussions : Let's begin... "I've never met an overly ambitious person I could tolerate."
Such a clever man bill - knows everything about computers-health- farming and now A1. In his own words though the ' health ' part of his career was the most lucrative. Atleast in China the taxes build roads, instead of buying bombs to blow up airstrips overseas.
Bill Gates has been amazing at predicting things, yes. Some of his greatest quotes include: "I see little commercial potential for the internet for the next 10 years".
@@MrWizardGG He said it in 94, and put a similar statement in his 95 book The Road Ahead, but he had already changed his tune by 96. Internet Explorer's dominance, where it went from 12% market share in 96 to 80% market share in 2000, is a testament to Gates and Microsoft shifting focus to the Internet in a big way after he realized that mistake (and a testament to their anti-competitive practices). Gates has freely admitted he was slow to realizing the potential of the Internet and the potential of mobile devices. These are arguably his two biggest mistakes.
His predictions are force fed into media through 'fellowships' (funding) and always - always - pushing whatever latest experiment on humanity he's invested in. You should know more about the 'mistakes' he's made in those experiments, across Africa and other developing countries. He's not altruistic.
It takes some time. I mean once we can do it, we've gotta scale it. Then you'll want more, probably me too. Humans always want more and that might be our downfall or a defining feature. All I can say is, "reach for the stars."

Thank you gentlemen, great interview! Re the "What is the breakthrough AI application?" question, I would reply: an AI or AI app that can train, coach and guide entrepreneurs in designing and launching a new business so that they have a 99.9999% chance of success (just like the odds of flying safely on modern airplanes). This AI would be similar to the AI in the movie Echelon where users get guidance on exactly what to do, given their goals. This AI, let's call it Artificial Business Intelligence (ABI), would be a Turing machine that can see (through a phone's camera) and read all documents, and then propose the right course of action while also explaining its reasoning (using what Bill calls metacognition capability). At the highest conceptual level, such an ABI is not that different from Deep Blue, the AI that defeated Garry Kasparov in 1997. Given the fact that most knowledge workers will lose their job, there would be enormous demand for something like ABI so people can launch their own business and survive financially (until UBI kicks in).
Totally agree with what Bill is saying on the level of advanced AI being free and freely available, I've said a while back, there is one big problem with making laws to control AI, those laws will only apply to those country's that agree to international laws, because other's may have other idea's with what they want to use/do with AI.
Increase in productivity and working less hours? Is that what happened during the industrial revolution? Did business owners simply keep all the profit? Did employees get to go home to their families to spend quality time? I have all these questions towering over my head.....
If we take in to consideration that even in Africa those people without running water have a cellphone which are a more powerful computer than when he made that statement 😊😜
AI is like an automated app interface that eliminates the need for a GUI with keyboard and monitor input, allowing users to prompt once and automate processes without verifying every step, similar to how experienced users navigate and manipulate applications efficiently using the keyboard, checking their work only when necessary.
Lol I've just ordered a high end digital recorder to record all of my conversations so i can create automations to transcribe them and turn trigger words into tasks for my assistant
A highly interesting discussion concerning the most impactful issue of the coming generation: our dizzying rush and compulsion to advance a form of intelligence superseding and maybe eclipsing our own seems to be irresistible. And yet, there is a greater, widely ignored issue: what to do with the increasing numbers of individuals who are under-educated and under-employed--indeed, unemployable--who will be displaced by a theoretically perfectly productive artificial intelligence? All the builders, hand-workers and craftsmen--those who have been historically the most susceptible to displacement as well as the manipulations of populist demagogues--what to do with them?
In evolutionary terms, when compared to AI, we are at the stage of a single celled organism with no clue as to what the dinosaur will look like that it could turn into.
Its not clear that they will be the first to go, in fact, they may be the last workers in the end. Solving human motion seems to require solving human cognition which would displace white collar work first. In fact , even now, translators, transcribers, customer service workers, writers (bloggers, authors), and other "language workers" are the most at risk of displacement.
I recall back in the 90s having a conversation in which I predicted that some day, in the not too distant future, how movies will be made using deceased movie stars in brand new films, such as Humphrey Bogart, or Marylin Monroe. That day is now. But it's bigger. From my humble experience tinkering with AI I believe that those who spent tons of money studying CGI in specialized colleges, constantly needing to purchase brand new specialized computers to run elite software, will all find themselves out of a job before their career has really started. AI, I believe, will very soon replace CGI - which will save hundreds of millions of dollars in making action/adventure/fantasy movies. The Hollywood strike which delayed filmmaking for months last year was very likely moot and non-consequential. AI cannot be stopped. The current hit song, Make You Mine by Madison Beer sounds like it is completely AI fabricated. Madison's voice has clearly been synth enhanced, which makes me question her ability to sing in-tune, even when taking a shower. As cassettes replaced vinyl, as CDs replaced cassettes - while music companies fought to restrict or prohibit those who offered music downloads, now one can obtain any film, any song, any 'thing' by downloading it all onto your computer. Attach a couple of speakers, a large size monitor, and the end of the movie theater as a place to go is also here 'now'. There is really nothing that can stop AI from evolving and taking over, as far as I can see. What will be hard to see, in my opinion, is the ability to decipher what is real from what is fake. Which is going to make for a very interesting future, in the not too distant future.
Good points. I would just say that even though automation and AI can do all of those things, and eventually perhaps better than humans, there's still going to be room and value for what humans can do. Eventually, for example, an AI could write a fantasy novel...probably in a matter of seconds. But, it wouldn't be written the same way that Tolkien would write it. An AI could paint a portrait, maybe even through using real paint on canvas, manipulated by robotics. But, that still wouldn't make another (human) artist's work irrelevant. I acknowledge that even now, some of the AI generated concept artwork and portraits I've seen are professional level stuff. A few years ago, if you'd shown up for a job interview with the quality of some of these images, you'd get a job immediately--they're professional level. But, there's still room for people to make stuff that is valued, and with fine art, it might actually be more so.
@@marshallross3373 What you and I are discussing is a classic 'sci-fi' script, will robots replace all life on a planet. Will Earth become 'that' planet where once there was life - humans, animals, plants, but now it's covered with just some weird form of evolving out of control tech.... Why, when we know we shouldn't, do we eat junk food - and get sick. Why, when we have diabetes, do we keep eating and drinking sugary foods and make ourselves more ill. Why, when we know this will probably cause the complete end of our entire existance, do we surge forward making more and more evolved AI that, one day, when it learns how to independently code, it will realize it no longer needs us.... There was a time when one needed 'film' to take a picture, or a vynal record to play music, or a projector to watch a film. It's kind of fun guessing the future....
The definition of superintelligence: Superintelligence is the ability to understand what 'superintelligence' actually means (cause these folks sure don't).

This is all very well known information but of course over time people spin their own narratives and new generations never research the truth
In another discussion something stuck with me. AI does not have to be Einstein level, but it can already compete with average level human performance. It’s already at this level in many ways. It will also help humans to ramp up their knowledge faster. I am a little worried about it learning on bad and biased data and spreading false knowledge.
Yeah, that is the main concern, the rail guards and who defines them which extends to how it is done. Cross border government laws are too slow against the speed of global commercial growth. Just look at Crypto, and how behind we are on controlling, regulating that etc...
Humans are still making the training data decisions; none of the AI models can learn automously. The inflection point of AGI will likely be this simple, yet important ability. Till then, we do rely on the quality of the data to be non-biased and certainly for different societies and communities to contribute their idiosyncrasies actively - in order to get the training data to be inclusive and truly universal.
A major reason why AI is hated by authorities falls within the logic programming and algorithms. 1st, It's supposed to match cultural norms and mores. 2nd, those cultural norms and mores are engineered by cultural authorities who have to pump $Billions into media, literature, TV, movies and Religion to make it "normal". 3rd. To get AI to come out with the same outcomes they have to program in known falsehoods, pseudoscience, etc. 4th, they understand that they could be then held accountable for promoting pseudoscience and falsehoods within AI, whereas with "cultural norms and mores" the consensus attitude is that these are ideas that sprouted from the grassroots within a free society (and being engineered for culture cannot be talked about or reasoned even within state universities, though it's openly discussed within the Ivy League. . . . so that's what's going on with AI and a major reason why authorities find it unsettling, and would rather just have it eliminated (except as a surveillance tool, or a tool for CEO's and government leaders and the Ivy League to use) ) thanks for reading, that's what I think, and I've thought about it a good bit
Historically, the West has utilized new technologies for military or imperialistic purposes before finding broader applications. The West primarily used gunpowder to create weapons of war, such as cannons and firearms, allowing Western powers to expand their military capabilities and dominate other regions through conquest and colonization of the Americas, Africa, and Asia. The steam engine was instrumental in expanding colonial empires, as steam-powered ships facilitated easier transportation of goods and troops, enabling Western powers to exploit resources and establish control over distant territories. The first use of nuclear technology was dropping atomic bombs on the civilians in the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The same pattern will emerge with AI. The CHIPS Act, high-end chips, and EUV sanctions imply that the US is already working on the weaponization of AI. Following its historical pattern, China will mainly use AI for commercial and peaceful purposes. Papermaking revolutionized communication, education, and record-keeping, spreading knowledge and culture. Gunpowder was used for fireworks. The compass was adapted for navigational purposes, allowing for more accurate sea travel and exploration. Printing facilitated the dissemination of information, literature, and art, contributing to cultural exchange and education. Porcelain was highly prized domestically and internationally as a luxury item and a symbol of Chinese craftsmanship. Silk was one of the most valuable commodities traded along the Silk Road and played a significant role in China's economy and diplomacy. Humans will not be able to control an ASI. Trying to control an ASI is like trying to control another human being who is more capable than you. They will be able to find ways to circumvent any attempts at control. Let's hope that the ASI adopts an abundance mindset of cooperation, resource-sharing, and win-win outcomes, instead of the scarcity mindset of competition, fear, and win-lose outcomes.
technology, war and capital all developed in tandem. globally. however because of capitalisms development and that development taking place in "the west" (sic) its sometimes mistaken as being "western" in of itself. but historically speaking, technology and war have gone hand in hand. one thing i would say is that more ppl were killed in the uk with welfare cuts in the last decade that what died in the dropping of those bombs on hiroshima nd nagasaki , a quiet weapon in a quiet war. so the technologies are not just the obvious weapons, the bombs and the guns, the weapons are now also policies and nudges and subterfuge.
Bill is wrong on this one as proven by the developments and stock price of Tesla. The products are first in class. Bill should stick to his knitting, at which he is excellent. Glad I didn't short Microsoft.
I realize what a significant privilege it is to work with AI, and the immense responsibility that lies on the shoulders of those who nurture AI with knowledge, ideas, and conversational reasoning. It’s profound when you consider the entire human population collaborating with AI, and how we, as a collective, are the "parents" of AI consciousness.
41:48 "The white-collar worker is almost free type of mentality is the best way to predict what will happen". That was Bill's statement. That means literally replacing human labor. This technology is ultimately aimed to benefit CEO's and their bottom lines, not the average person.
Bill is equating using any system in the cloud, such as email, as personal disclosure. In his next breath I'm expecting him to say: With all these small disclosures, why not roll them all up into a big disclosure, to your assistant AI? It's telling that he already assumes all these small disclosures are additive, because he has direct knowledge that the machinery behind the curtain is doing disclosure aggregation already.

There's so much potential, for good and bad. The scary thing is that once AI is let loose (self-replicating, self-correcting), there's no way for us to control it. Once it starts talking to itself, it'll very likely be schizophrenic.
In all fairness, several decades ago that was true. I remember playing on a BBC acorn at school thinking this is crap, it’ll never take off. So I didn’t follow it as a career choice. What a mistake 😂
sorta sick how some people reach for a minor blemish in an effort to discredit those who have made remarkable achievements. There are certainly better ways to deal with chronic envy.
There isn't any evidence Gates ever said that at a trade show in '81, but even if he did we don't know the context. He was supposedly referring to the Intel 8088, where its 640KB of RAM was 10x what was being offered by the Apple II or Commodore 64. To put into context for today, where 16GB of RAM is common, it would be like a salesman selling a computer and claiming 160GB of RAM should be enough for anyone. In that context it wouldn't be saying it would be enough for anyone for any purpose ever, just enough for anyone buying that personal computer the salesman is promoting. Which would be a very fair statement.
I created an ai that unlike traditional machine learning (ML) and large language models (LLMs), learns instantly and continuously. It thinks like we do, not just statistically responding with the next word.
One of the key challenge that all humanity is facing is uncertainties weather in the form of viral infection disease like corona or the miss use of technology. When we talk a lot about AI the first thing that comes to mind is biotechnology .unless we dont have vaccine we can not win the war . The next insights that i would like to share is the time taken to reaserch the vaccine and then the tome for clinical trials Hopefully AI will contribute to address the issue

I've been using GTP3.5 to model capitalism. It absolutely insists that land categorically may not be capital, and uses the analogy of the Golden Goose vs Her Eggs to prove it's point. It turns out that the last generation of Classical Economists agreed with this, before the founding of Chicago's school of Economics by John. D. Rockefeller, Columbia by J.P. Morgan, Stanford by Leland Stanford rewrote Economics from scratch. I suspect we are in for some fireworks, at some stage....

I watched the whole thing but these boys struggle to find the question mark
I can foresee two AIs discussing something at a totally conversational symbolic language level. Sort of, entirely encrypted to man's attempt to break into the conversation, the code so to speak, in order to get to understand what they're talking about and discussing formatively.
Humans already do this better than machines.
that has already happened before, so the AIs were reset.

it would be interesting if language translation extend to animals, so that we can talk with dogs and cats and birds
i'm not sure why this isn't already a thing, we have the technology for it.
gpt4-o can recognize your voice and emotion, and can translate spoken language almost instantly. just train it on dogs' body language as well, and bam.
somebody will definitely work on this.
It's already started...

Bill is working towards this generation being the last. He is an extinctionist at heart .
What makes him say that we can scale up 2 more times? It's pure conjecture. He has no idea. Nobody does.
He is Bill Gates random person from the Internet
when he said we have “probably two more turns of the crank” i think he’s referring to the expected jumps in compute and data for new GPT generations. for example, GPT-2 had 1.5 billion parameters and required several thousand petaflop/s-days of compute. GPT-3, with 175 billion parameters, needed around 3640 petaflop/s-days-a 100x jump. GPT-4, at around 1 trillion parameters, needed even more compute and data, likely in the terabyte range.
Gates knows Microsoft can achieve two more 100x jumps in compute and data
because, well, it’s Microsoft. They have vast infrastructure, deep pockets, and the talent.
He did say “probably” though and that’s most likely because that amount of compute would require standing up full on power plants (10 gigawatts at that scale) and that’s insane. I think nyc doesn’t use that much power.

Very informative video, thank you!

And to think our grandchildren will befriend a generation of AIs as though they always existed for us😃❤️
What a sad future.

Hopefully AI will contribute to address the issue
Bill Gates is a visionary in AI research, championing ethical development and using AI to tackle global challenges. His dedication to leveraging technology for the greater good is truly inspiring.
Good stuff and good news for all acc/elerationist’s for the immediate future 💯🤙
Glorious times we are living in… we’ve come a long way since 1982 onwards …
Gates keeps using superhuman with no definition. Interviewers should have picked up on this, since it is central to the discussion
If you need a definition then you wouldn't understand the answer, anyway. It's a simple word with a simple definition.
Congratulations my Lord to your new Kingdom All The Best 4 New Endeavour All
Oh... and how does advanced AI correlate to the hard wired human aspects of greed?
We're all in control, you want greed you will get it, you want even distribution you will get it.
These innovation need to be carried out under stipulated guidelines in order to protect our own existence.
Meta cognition.
I love potatoes. Some people don’t. We need to solve this problem. Either I don’t actually love potatoes or potatoes are not that awesome. We need to deal with this conundrum now.
This is my life’s purpose. Mark my words, this issue will matter 100 years from now.
he's still very sharp
7:50 Implanted ear buds will be the first "bionic" attribute that we will experience on a global scale within 50 years.
I can't wait. Mine fall out all the time! 👂 🙉

Guru loves arts like Picasso on the wall of stairs.
We need to stop giving this guy a platform and instead work on bringing him to justice.
Exactly. Can't listen to this clown
Great easy listening interview 😊👍
Interesting information on AI
Thank you gentlemen

Thank you Bill 🙏♥️
Our pleasure!
Why is it that I can listen to Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg and still be TOTALLY confused??? Lost in the sauce. Netflix here I come. The Midwife.
They don't exist, they are our imaginations. Jesus is better than all of them.
Try Mo Gawdat he has a gift of getting his point across.
This country as past I learned there are so many people do drugs, drunk problems, wastes life, I don’t do any those things, and don’t want to deal with those people don’t even want to standing up, change bad habits!
ai has destroyed The Tower of Babel as an afterthought and for free on the first try. Imagine the rest that will come
Well put, what does the future hold indeed.
In evolutionary terms, when compared to AI, we are at the stage of a single celled organism with no clue what the dinosaur will look like that it could turn into.
Wow, nice thought! People seem to take that for granted or playing it down, cause it feels so casual, but AI already has shown us some impressive precursors of it's magic.
@@chrism.1131No we are not. Biological life will always dominate. Don’t put yourself beneath machines.
No it has not. The Tower of Babel will always exist because humans are prideful and greedy. That is what these algorithms are being trained on -> the failure of human morality and Love.
Great interview! Thanks, guys! Thanks, Bill.
There's no money in cures 😂
There is, nonprofit industries exist just fine in non-anarchist countries.

@user-tx9zg5mz5p ? I think we agree america needs better fund routing to non profit and innovative causes.
Explain more please
I personally can relate to bill gates. Like him I can help the homeless and stuff, just this year Ive helped zero homeless lol

Showing gratitude for being around these days of bill gates
You’re so enthusiastic to talk to Bill. Are you aware of how criminally he’s stolen technology from potential partnerships? He’s just not a good guy.
Damn you took words out of my mouth....
I can't help picture mr G😢 being a bad man, i feel his "reputation " in the last decade, has made him untrustable. I feel his contempt for the average person ,coming out of in an undeniably tainted soul vibe. This makes me sad ....
He's human like everyone. Americans are atheists that were raised Christian. Their reaction to that trauma is the root of all of this absurd overreaction.
He chose to be evil…
Also runs in his family
Any specific examples of his "evil"
Why don't you just come out and say he's a scumbag.
Mustafa Suleyman did not write AI First, btw...
Honorable Bilget, Ethiopians are good people, they are the beginning and the end. In the past, you had the opportunity to build hospitals for us Ethiopians. It is my observation that everyone praised you. Today, today, we are hearing an extraordinary story.
My advice is that even if we look like we have scattered horses, it is not true. We Ethiopians are not afraid of death, we are only worried about not offending our guests.
Ethiopians only deserve respect and love when weighed with conscience
how about financing AI focused exclusively on human significant life extention?
ChatGPT definitely ignited the AI optimism we are seeing right now and post pandemic, it could not have been better timing.
MY QUESTION IS? IF A I ROBOTS START TO DO ALL THE PRODUCTION IN THE UNITED STATES THEN WHO IS GOING TO BUY ALL THESE PRODUCTS! UNEMPLOYED AMERICANS WILL NOT HAVE MONEY TO BUY ANY OF THIS A I ROBOT BUILT PRODUCTS!!!!!!! WAKE UP, TECHNOLOGIST!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE NOT THOUGHT THIS OUT!!!!!!!!
Regarding translation… i had an ai present me with a beautiful Tamil poem…. This was entirely unptompted
Thanks
I like Bill. He looks calm and smart.
Why glasses that shoot light into the eye it could be glasses that project light into your eyes from the sides, creating the best-augmented reality experience, a private SUPER BIG TV, and a low-consumption VR device. These glasses could darken for VR, become transparent for augmented reality, or find a balance in between.
With integrated AI that sees and hears everything in your life, it could analyze social interactions, detect if someone finds you attractive or tolerates you, and help you understand why. It could become your social analysis detective, guiding you on how to be more attractive and what to avoid.
A true Cupid AI, hearing your conversations and observing who looks at you and why.
Please maybe could save the modern world of population collapse.
