2:09 This part always made me think of disgusting, rotting, stone walls. Such horribly, decrepit death in every corner. So foul and dry that you choke.
Out of the whole series, Diablo 1 still has my favorite soundtrack. The guitar-struck tunes are moody, and eerily atmospheric; it comes complete with an ominous and foreboding tone that harbors towards the grungy side at same time.
"I can see what you see not, Vision milky then eyes rot, When you turn they will be gone, Whispering their hidden song, Then you see what cannot be, Shadow move where light should be, Out of darkness out of mind, Cast down into the halls of the blind." The very 1st poem i learned in my childhood.
2:06 onward is one of my favorite pieces of music that Blizzard has ever written - after the opening with the drums beats and guitar riffs, it then slows down to an ominous tune followed by indistinct voices and moans. It's like you've just heroically marched down from the final level of the dungeon after cleansing it of lesser demons, only to be met by silence and darkness which seem to say, "that was just the beginning."
Yeah, this part sounds like "Dark Fantasy" to me. That kind of unspeakable horror, the evils that come from the kind of darkness that light has never penetrated. That terrifying silence you're talking about. It's so good bruh

It goes without saying that the music and ambient sound of this game is legendary. I had to force myself to make it through the dungeon level since I was so terrified of it as a child. The minute I heard this music I couldn't go any further. Finally managed to conquer my fear later, but bloody hell this game was scary.

All of Blizzard is like that currently, generic trailer-esque music during the cutscenes with dramatic suspense choir, uninspired one-liners... Thing is, if you always expect cinematography to make up for not having prose up to the top, and viceversa, none of them are ever memorable. Briefings used to be as memorable as cutscenes because they both focused on their own terrains.

People say D2 is better than the first Diablo, but for me that was never the case. Diablo is the most atmospheric game ever, it had the most hostile and toxic environment. Every enemy felt so deeply evil, and the character could only breath fresh air outside in this forsaken little village. Every single human character in the game had a certain level of Madness in him and I never trusted anyone, not even Cain fully. The Soundtrack is the best ever made for a Game.

I mean .. the dungeon was already menacing af .. but this place was dark! When I entered and could barely see my souroundings but got glimpses of enemies twice the size of those in the previous levels .. and that damn music .. damn that level gave me goosebumps when i first played it
The guitar riffs, the horns, the bongo like hollow drums, the voices, it all reminds me of some ancient ruin. This place will always remind me of goatmen and fat demons. The sense of exploration mixed with a genuine reluctance to see what was around the corner really sold this place, even for way back when. It'll always stick with me, somewhere in my memories.
The way the confident and adventurous beginning just unexpectedly fades out into fear and terror and madness is so good. Like all of a sudden you realize you're lost in the dark, surrounded by demons, and completely screwed. I feel like it actively tricks you into thinking it'll just loop back to the beginning before it drops the floor out from beneath you.
I notice all the songs for each of the levels kind of start out triumphant or badass even, then descend into a sort of horror tune that sometimes doesn’t even have a beat to it, before ascending back to a cool song at the end. The only one that doesn’t seem to do this is the theme for Hell. It just…descends into madness. As it should.
So many years playing this game... still so good "I can see what you see not. vision milky then, eyes rot. When you turn they will be gone. whispering their hidden song. then you'll see what cannot be. shadows move where light should be. out of darkness, out of mind. CAST DOWN INTO THE HALLS OF THE BLIND." -So creepy as a kid
Love the part at 1:25-2:00, like an ancient witch doctor tribe from the depths of the darkest jungle dancing around a bonfire, falling into unconscious trance and chanting to summon a primeval spirit
I think that we all need an epic black metal band which would sing about diablo's lore. Something like Summoning fused with D1 soundtrack. I would kill for this!
I don't know why but the catacombs were my favorite location in diablo 1, possibly in the entirety of diablo. Back then, I was a kid, and actually only had the demo: I could only play up to level 3 on the version I had, so I spent hours in the first dungeon, and I saw the little advertisement of the full game, showing off pictures of hell so many times. Eventually someone got me a copy of the whole game, and I finally got to play it as it was intended: I got to the catacombs, and it was something so bizarre and weird, it was such a tone shift: not just visually, but you had the fascinating little crypt shortcut, instead of fighting zombies you had the goatmen. The music was a huge factor: it was just so unique. The tombs had this dread-inducing tone of fear that made the levels feel threatening, but this music was just _alien._ It felt like you were on an adventure proper: you'd proven yourself in the crypts above, and the game was ready to begin in earnest. The other layers didn't really give me that jarring sense of contrast, so they didn't stick with me as much
Earthstar Review I played it this week. Made it all the way to hell, but i was locked out by a bunch of steel lords and i dont have enough money to keep buying pots ;x;... *sigh* new run for me... I missed the skeleton king quest anyway. i think my disc is too scratched...
I think the CIA uses baby crying to torture in interrogations. It's because humans instinctively want to find the source of the crying so they can comfort the baby. So this track is pure genius and that adds to the horror element.
They also fucked up the lore in D3. In D1, heaven and hell were real world relevant. Now it's some weird stuff where there is no Creator God and the opposing forces of Lucifer/Diablo and his fallen angels/demons, but instead some fantasy stuff where there's something more evil that existed before Diablo and some other force of beings that existed before God... wtf?? way to fuck it up Blizzard.
Anu and Tathamet? What a fuckin joke! Fuckin blizzard. The people who contributed to making D3 should be ashamed of themselves. Bad lore, bad artwork, bad gameplay.
I absolutely love this, the war drums in the first two minutes send chills down my spine and adrenaline through my veins. As if my primal instincts are triggering.
This was my favorite music in diablo 1! I played it a ton, and got all my friends into it. I love the electric guitar in the music. First time i ever heard an electric guitar in a game music. Love it, and i love this game, diablo 1 beat all the others!
Mine too! This is my favorite theme from D1 and 02:06 moment is the most atmospheric thing I've ever heard (I have to mention Doom 64 soundtrack here). It's not only the game soundtrack. It's like a journey through childhood nightmares which still fascinate you. You're still scared of them... but you love them! And miss them so much somehow...
This still gives me goosebumps. Fuck this scared the shit out me playing as a kid. Hats off to Matt Uleman using this as the basis for some Burning Crusade dungeons
Despite so many years passed since the release of Diablo 1 - its music remains the best in the whole series. Diablo 2 was a great game because it added and improved so many things compared its precessior but the atmosphere, style and music in Diablo 1 are still the best. It's very sad the third and fourth game has nothing common with the first two games.
Best music in the entire diablo series right here. Now that i look back, diablo 1 was the best of all 3. Too bad i didnt think of that when i hawked d1 for d2😣
Blizzard need the next generation to take over.. Take in the nerds, not the "career" people, or actually take in a few of them but never make them majority. The inspired people should come first. Only then u can find your way back to darkness.
I can see what you see not- Vision milky, then eyes rot. When you turn, they will be gone, Whispering their hidden song. Then you see what cannot be- Shadows move where light should be. Out of darkness, out of mind, Cast down into the Halls of the Blind.
This one give me chills because when fight your way out of dungeons thinking it will be easy and there are just more bright dungeon levels and then you land in a new level the atmosphere is changed completely dark and hostile. And music kicks in like the game is saying "oh you are asking for it!"
Imagine a first person horror adaptation of this game. Seeing the Butcher up close and King Leoric...or I guess Diablo. If they could carry over this atmosphere to that it would be truly terrifying
🥶 1:30 is the equivalent of walking through a haunted tunnel or dark hallway, alone, *_and being hit_* with the chilling realization that the howling wind you've been hearing for over a minute now, not only ain't so, but a host of wailing souls and angered spirits instead, finally taking notice and flooding towards you. Such moment then leaves you two options, basic and primal to our species: 😨 *Flight or Fight* 😡 As a kid, I used to picture my Warrior undergoing just that: being hit by a tidal wave of dark spiríts in a corridor, torchlights being snuffed in their wake. Aidan falling to his knees maybe from exhaustion, or perhaps because he recognized some of these presences trying to overwhelm them. Feeling a bitter mix of fear, anger, and pity before struggling to get up and continue on his quest. Man this game's awesome.

I think the CIA uses baby crying to torture in interrogations. It's because humans instinctively want to find the source of the crying so they can comfort the baby. So this track is pure genius and that adds to the horror element.
Its a baby
They also fucked up the lore in D3. In D1, heaven and hell were real world relevant. Now it's some weird stuff where there is no Creator God and the opposing forces of Lucifer/Diablo and his fallen angels/demons, but instead some fantasy stuff where there's something more evil that existed before Diablo and some other force of beings that existed before God... wtf?? way to fuck it up Blizzard.
Actually, this stuff was in the novels WAY before Diablo III came out.
Anu and Tathamet? What a fuckin joke! Fuckin blizzard. The people who contributed to making D3 should be ashamed of themselves. Bad lore, bad artwork, bad gameplay.
Paris catacombs theme.
2:08 demonically elegant
this scared me as a kid, i didn't want to go into the catacombs
Imagine in real life....that would be terrifying
I absolutely love this, the war drums in the first two minutes send chills down my spine and adrenaline through my veins. As if my primal instincts are triggering.
4:35 Could hear this all day...
Always wished there would be an extended version of this segment.
This is what I came for
Horseman of War
This was my favorite music in diablo 1! I played it a ton, and got all my friends into it. I love the electric guitar in the music. First time i ever heard an electric guitar in a game music. Love it, and i love this game, diablo 1 beat all the others!
As someone who usually plays a sorcerer, the catacombs were always my favorite zone. The music made it even creepier and fun to play through.
02:06 Bump it! bump it! this is my jam! YEAH SON!!!
The composer must have been listening to Alice in Chains at the time. The parts with the guitar and wah-guitar reminds me of them.
This song is a great mix of industrial RocK from that time. Maybe, even ahead of its time. Definitely a Nine Inch Nails influence.
this song theme for the catacombs part is creepy and dark AF. Perfect mood for that game level
2:07 I can listen forever
1 dislike from diablo him self.
Now the butcher, Lazarus and 8 Succubus joined him.
Nah it's from the Diablo 3 stans
God, those annoying Goat Archers...
I love the transition at 2:07. It added to the dark, moody feel when reading about the Halls of the Blind.
"And so locked behind the gateway of blood and past the hall of fire, Valor awaits for the hero of light to awaken..."
1:30 part is so cool, hearing the sword swing and slash dmg in it
The smell of this franchise's death surrounds me
"may the spirits of Arkaine protect me"
D1 OST is very unique. Top 5
This still gives me goosebumps. Fuck this scared the shit out me playing as a kid. Hats off to Matt Uleman using this as the basis for some Burning Crusade dungeons
epic guitar at 1:30
i wish it had last longer than just few seconds
Despite so many years passed since the release of Diablo 1 - its music remains the best in the whole series. Diablo 2 was a great game because it added and improved so many things compared its precessior but the atmosphere, style and music in Diablo 1 are still the best. It's very sad the third and fourth game has nothing common with the first two games.
Best Action-RPG theme ever. No other arpg was and is able to top that masterpiece of arpg history.
"Rest well Leoric, I'll find your son".
no WRPG will have a more atmospheric soundtrack than this
I was just talking to a friend about this game a few hours ago. No joke. Talk about the universe listening......
od 2:10 trzęsę się ze strachu... i podniecenia na myśl o tej wspaniałej grze
Podniecenia? 🤨
This 'music' is fucking terrifying, I love it! It's definitely very hellish that's for sure.
Best music in the entire diablo series right here. Now that i look back, diablo 1 was the best of all 3. Too bad i didnt think of that when i hawked d1 for d2😣
Looking back on my past gaming life- trade-ins are always a mistake. Always.
Blizzard need the next generation to take over.. Take in the nerds, not the "career" people, or actually take in a few of them but never make them majority. The inspired people should come first.
Only then u can find your way back to darkness.
"Oh I'm Sorry did I break your concentration?"
i hate those enemies that spits acid
I can see what you see not- Vision milky, then eyes rot. When you turn, they will be gone, Whispering their hidden song. Then you see what cannot be- Shadows move where light should be. Out of darkness, out of mind, Cast down into the Halls of the Blind.
imagine this in Virtual reality.
a diablo 1 vr with realistic eyes in the darkness with this music would be terrifying
this game is a gem, a timeless masterpiece
I love this track
My god, this sure was creative with this soundtrack. Abstract ambience at its finest.
the laughing gives me chills
from 4:11 best music.
This one give me chills because when fight your way out of dungeons thinking it will be easy and there are just more bright dungeon levels and then you land in a new level the atmosphere is changed completely dark and hostile. And music kicks in like the game is saying "oh you are asking for it!"
The smell of Death surrounds me.
1:30 guitar tabs, pls
I won't go church with a hole into it again
roots, kaka roots!
They don't make games like that anymore. Thanks Mat.
Imagine a first person horror adaptation of this game. Seeing the Butcher up close and King Leoric...or I guess Diablo. If they could carry over this atmosphere to that it would be truly terrifying
1:28 that guitar was made by the gods
Rugal Bernstein: It sounds very much like Robin Trower.
0:13 i always imaine a goatman playing that epic e guitar solo
And at 2:06, with a devilish grin while strumming
🥶 1:30 is the equivalent of walking through a haunted tunnel or dark hallway, alone, *_and being hit_* with the chilling realization that the howling wind you've been hearing for over a minute now, not only ain't so, but a host of wailing souls and angered spirits instead, finally taking notice and flooding towards you.
Such moment then leaves you two options, basic and primal to our species:
😨 *Flight or Fight* 😡
As a kid, I used to picture my Warrior undergoing just that: being hit by a tidal wave of dark spiríts in a corridor, torchlights being snuffed in their wake. Aidan falling to his knees maybe from exhaustion, or perhaps because he recognized some of these presences trying to overwhelm them. Feeling a bitter mix of fear, anger, and pity before struggling to get up and continue on his quest.
Man this game's awesome.
