I have a fantastic canoe set up. I started gradually setting it up in the last couple years, I honestly think i couldn't make it any better even if I tried. Its got all the state of the art gear and I wouldn't do anything different other than getting a different type of canoe. I've got a 12 foot canoe that is made from aluminum and weighs only 34 lbs, so I can stow it on the roof of my Honda civic but I hate that because I have to take the gear out every time I go out and come back. Wish I had gotten a 60 -70 lbs plastic canoe and a trailer.
Just was given a canoe and think I'm going to set it up for a comfortable fishing ride and decided to check out RUclips, as I'm watching this video I noticed this voice sounded very familiar, LOL it's my old buddy Frank!! Hey Buddy it's Ruben, great video what a small world and maybe we can have a canoe race someday.
I found myself in a pickle wanting a canoe for downriver paddling and had fishing canoes that sucked at river paddling. I bought a lowe basscatcher pro mod-v boat and serious downriver canoe. Buying the 17 foot boat opened up unlimited hp lakes and swamp use with a side of river action. Mounted bow mount and transom mounted electric motors and features a 50 hp tilt and trim. Got really fed up if you need a trailer to portage a canoe or kayak to go fishing.
With the 2x6 underneath the solid swivel seat mount, I believe stability was improved. Not to mention, with EVERYTHING on center, including myself, adds even more!
Bath mats are a cool idea. I used some grip tape on the bottom of my canoe and found some rubber mats at Harbor Freight that look like sewer top diamomd plate that work great to rest my battery box on.
Great setup. I just picked up a mad river canoe and plan on doing a few mods so I’ve been researching lately. While I was watching your video, I thought maybe you could figure out a way for attaching a removable hook to the battery and hooking on to the motor mount as a counter weight instead of all those zip ties. Just a thought. Not sure how much the battery weighs compared to the motor.

As I explained in the video, I got rid of that hardware and used the Scotty rod mount hardware. I also cut the bevels off the wood pieces to make it a spliced square joint instead.
hi there. nice job on the mod. I have a question for you. I have an old town 146 amd I was thinking about removing the front seat and even the middle console, and modding it. did the bottom of the canoe lose stability? because the way it's designed those seats support the floor of the vessel. thanks in advance.
Sorry to reply so late. Not sure about removing the front or rear seats but the middle consol was suspended from the gunnels and didn't make contact with the floor at all. As far as stability goes, I've not given up any with this mod. But again, I paid particular attention to keep everything on center and this helped tremendously. My 146 has a fairly wide beam and a flat bottom so it's more stable than most I think. Hope this helps.
Awesome vid Frank, gives us some great tips for my canoe mods. I have a vid on my channel too of my 16ft canoe with a 55lb thrust minn kota. I think I'm a bit over powered what do you think?
Watched your vid man. That thing is cruising! I will prob rig up a tandom battery set-up someday so I can get 24 volts and then maybe put a beefier motor on mine. I give up speed to troll longer.
The comfort comes from the quality seat. It's the stability factor that increases tremendously, just by having everything, including myself, in the center.
I went with those Attwood swivel mounts. A plate with a bushing gets screwed down to the seat, and then there's a seat mounted piece with the stem and spring on it. These brackets hold up tremendously well but the design of the seat hinges is what gives out over time if you feel like leaning back and stretching alot like I do, LOL!

I thought the rod holder/anchor idea was neat. Thanks for sharing your setup!
Thanks JJ!
love your canoe I'm off to pick up my old town guide tomorrow hope its as stable as your boat is thanks for video
thanks man! Good luck!

Nice video Frank! I didn't hear any glory given to Jesus for all that goodness though? 🤔♥️
The Gospel of John, when you're ready, friend.🔥
How did raising the seat height affect the stability ? lots of great thought here thank you

Nice setup. Where did you get the transom mount from?

Good fishing there still?

Great Video dude, really like the setup. by sitting in the middle do you feel more comfortable?

I too would like to upgrade to a 36" shaft.
How did your seat hold up? Any impact on the structure?

brilliant
Thank you man!
Lot a height for no stabilizers . I think your gonna really regret it if she tips .
very nice i like it
4 or 5 lb deep sea "cod sinkers" lead... make greatttttt.. kayak/canoe anchors ....
heh, cause you think you're worth it
