Google removing ”don’t be evil” from it’s code of conduct is solid evidence of where the company is going
Theres also also a great book by the same name about how that happened by Rana Foroohar. Highly reccomend.
The fact that it was in there in the first place was very dubious.
Since how old that change is, it's more like where the company has successfully got to
@@quazar-omega Honestly with how forceful they are with location tracking, targeted ads, and overly-curated recommendations, it really feels like people have fully become their product against their wills. Doesn't help at all that Google is 1 of only 2 smartphone firmware makers.
They're tyring to DRM the internet now. They're pure evil.
Oh god I thought this was an apology video for a second...
🎵Hey... it's been a while since you saw my face...🎵
Ukeleles have been disgraced.
People have been saying a few weird things about me lately...

When I use quotes and still see results that say stuff like "does not include -term- : must include _term_ " or whatever bullshit it makes me want to scream.
Qoutation marks to explicitly look for that and only that have become functually utterly useless to me. It just dosn't work no more, either giving me results with words or entire paragraphs inbetween the terms or giving me results with synoniems
This is the thing that drives me nuts more than anything else. I can actually still find answers on Google, but when I'm trying to find car parts for my "Buick Lacrosse" NO I DON'T WANT A HONDA WATER PUMP, I'M NEVER GOING TO BUY THAT, IT'S NOT A LEGITIMATE SUBSTITUTE. It's so flipping infuriating because there's zero chance I will purchase the promoted items--it's not a case of making it look more attractive, or giving me a better price--the price could be zero and I still wouldn't want parts that do not fit my car. They have zero chance of making a sale this way unless they trip me up and trick me into buying it by spamming it at me. It's moronic. And it just keeps happening.
Meanwhile, Google can generally find answers to my computer questions reasonably fast.
It's amazing how the internet is basically three companies now but is somehow less navigable. Consolidation is the ultimate evil.
Yeah, because consolidation means monopoly, and monopoly means no reason to try to retain customers, because where else are they going to go?
@@jaschabull2365 While I get where you are coming from its not qutie correct in this case. The datasets are becoming WAY too huge and corrupted due to all of the "fake sites" popping up and spamming the system...and ofcourse the whole censorship and promoted propaganda thats going on

@Nel16 Yeah, true. Though in terms of search engines, it seems pretty safe to say Google's got a full monopoly, other search engines exist, but none have usage even close to Google's.
It's completely broken now. Sometimes I can't even find the "images" tab because it changes places every search.
Omg I HATE THAT AAAA
right??
It's so annoying that I always include 'images' if I'm actually looking for images cause that tab is just never there😅
oh my god, right? And life is too short to try and find it
how many times i clicked on maps accidentally xD
Man, the "adding reddit at the end to see content from humans" line really hit the nail on the head for how shit google is now. I honestly didn't know i wasn't the only one who did that.
I thought I was the only one doing this.
I was wondering how everyone else could manage their search, guess they don't either.. xD
Google nowadays reminds me of the time I learned to use a dictionary. Except that now the word's description is filled with ads & misinformation, or there's just no description. Even now looking at google image results gives out a load of AI generated pictures that I DO NOT care to see.
@@lyosha2925 Or articles and blogs that are pretty much spam and filled with filler content. It makes my mind melt. At least Chat GPT can be straightforward and comprehensible, even when it does spew misinformation; it's my personal choice when no forums appear for my specific inquiries.
@@Cdoddsy Same. Apparently it's pretty common. Even Ryan George had it in a skit.
Ha glad it's not just me. And I wouldn't have relied on reddit before if you paid me, but results are so drowned behind basically ads and AI articles now...
I'm so glad I'm not the only one. I keep telling my friends that Google doesn't show me things *I* want to see anymore, but rather things *it* wants me to see. I feel like they look at me like I'm some kind of conspiracy theorist! Resolving tech issues used to be so easy, but now I get the same 25 copy-pasted articles from their "preferred" websites, none of which tell me the answers I'm actually looking for!
Now this is an example I can get behind and understand.
I honestly didn't understand how Google wasn't working? 😂
@@falstad7711I can't even find the same shit I clearly remember already googling and finding easily 2 years ago. I go through like 2 pages of google and then it stops showing me anything as if that was all there was on the entire internet about thing.
Then I have to go to yandex or yahoo or some crap and sift through even more shit but at least usually at least I find the website I was looking for there at some point.
Google used to be so good, now it's borderline useless, it's a shame and very annoying.
At least you can still find some nice wallpapers with the image search.
"but rather things it wants me to see. "
THIS, ONE MILLION TIMES THIS!
when i search a specific browser issue i dont want to see how to fix an issue FOR GOD DAMN GOOGLE CHROME OR SAFARI WICH I AM NOT SEARCHING ABOUT
google treats you like a baby, it shows you what it thinks you meant not what you actually searched for. it assumes you are a stupid baby looking for basic faq shit for basic bitch apps, not the niche specific issue i have for a niche specific app im actually using that i am actually searching for.
specific search terms mean nothing, itll ignore all the actual words in your search to feed you basic how to articles for more popular apps im not even asking about.
And somehow Microsoft has the worst help forums in the world despite being some of the most ubiquitous products
We are all susceptible to propaganda
I had the same exact thoughts. I just started adding “reddit” to my searches recently as just an after thought to find real folks fixing problems & didn’t even realize in the moment that this is a good sign that google is busted.
Yeah, for me it started with magic the gathering cards because I wanted to see what people thought of them and how they combo'd them. Then I just started doing that for everything. I didn't even think about how the first page is 90% SPONSORED SCAMS NOW.
the irony is that adding "reddit" at the end no longer works in most cases because reddit subreddit communities are still privated for the strike
I feel like we are reaching the "all current system are becoming obsolete" stage that technology filters through, like a lot of the old stuff is either becoming redundant, obsolete, unusable or dysfunctional
I'm convinced some subreddits just used the strike as an excuse to be privated forever.
Last I checked, most big subs folded because Reddit said they'll ban mods and "certain mods" didn't want to lose their privilege and unprivated.
@@alita8900 I mean Reddit didn't give in. In fact they forced the mods out of popular subs and reopened them. What's worse is all the other search engines started copying google, and now NONE of them work. You used to be able to type words into some of them and get websites that contained those words. Not so much these days.
They aren't just copying Google. Most search engines use either Google or bing to generate search results. So there are basically just two search engines.
I have a whole folder on my phone of searches that Google can't make because people don't believe me, there are basic facts that it gets wrong because it's a popularity engine not a sophisticated search engine
I was on board for this the whole way, but the "reddit" bit really hit me like a truck.

I'm so glad more and more people are talking about this. When I pointed this out to people years ago they acted like I was crazy. You really can't get any real, helpful information anymore without adding "Reddit" to the end, and that's massively hit or miss too.
I looked up "cowboy hat" for drawing reference once, and even with ad blockers enabled, there were four entire pages full of nothing but ads to buy cowboy hats before the first real result showed up (the Wikipedia article). It's like they secretly add "I want to buy ___" to every search you make.
I'll never forget when I googled "Sin guilty gear flag" and all the results were anything but his flag
And then you try to wrap it in quotes, and Google's like "Naaah, I think you meant this other stuff anyway."
@@SudoBurger minus (-) qualifies on searches to eliminate wrong results used to work but they don't consistently anymore... It's impressive they managed to fuck up a basic blacklist
"Cowboy hat" gives me pictures of cowboy hats immediately.
Many of them come from shopping sites, because cowboy hats are a product. This doesn't happen if you're searching for, let's say, toenail.
Though even if you're looking for things to shop for you're never finding what you're looking for
Oh ny God, this is my literal reaction after hearing 1:54
I was like "google is still useful" but deep down I know is not longer the same and indeed now I have to always put Reddit at the end of everything I ask for learning or finding the real way of things, the human experience and not some web article full of ads with redundant texts trying to convince me about stuff they're paid to promote, it's true, Google doesn't work anymore.
There's also the sheer amount of ads, you either use something like Opera GX or the first 5 results of every query are scams trying to trick you into thinking they're the site you're looking for so you give them your account details, not to mention Reddit slowly killing itself means that the years of actual human-made content begins shrinking

exclusions seem to simply not exclude for me anymore. 🙃
I know people shit on AI but i occasionally use the Bing AI for programming/modelling stuff if i'm not finding what i need and it's relatively competent
It’s literally jaw-dropping sometimes how inappropriate the results are. You’re thinking “there’s just no way the biggest search engine is utterly useless, must be my search” and you revise your search only to get… the exact same results. It’s surreal what Google has become.
Other than google maps i havent touched google in years. Not that other search engines are mich better, but their better non thr less.
@@Dappis I do the same sometimes, and it's sad that AI is better at this than the search results from Google.
Who would have thought that all companies applying SEO would mess up with the search engines
I remember reading tips about it back in 2011 or so and every advice guru type swearing you need SEO for your website. And it felt so shallow and false, and look where it led.
SEO is fine, but he problem is the SEO factors google is actively ranking higher are meaningless and produce trash. It's Google's own fault.
The amount of traffic you get on Google tends to drop of exponentially after position 1. Getting traffic to your page is pretty important for websites, so naturally they'd be employing tactics that optimises this traffic flow. The problem is that Google's been cultivating this atmosphere of competition for so long that websites are now built for SEO first and users second. That's why the content served sucks - it's not meant for people, its for tricking search engines into thinking they found an answer to your query.
@@Apoc2Kimagine that, a product ruined by purely financial motivations
@@crestofscribbles8761 it's a mathematical problem. there is no method of ranking results which cannot be exploited by sites that put in more work to boost themselves
with AI generated content, it will get even worse, as AI will be able to outcompete any human doing optimization, and smaller projects made by individuals will always fall behind corporate ad garbage
in a sense, it is google's creation, but it also can't exactly be undone. the web is just very monetized
Good to know is not only my feeling. RUclips is even worst. Just shows 3 videos "related" with your search, then 3 "that you might like (not related at all with the search)" and the rest of the pages are not related to search but the algorithm wants you to catch you and keep you in.
I swear google would give you an article about “when was gum invented”
*I JUST WANT THE DATE*
Nein
The hilarious part is that during the first and second verse I went "Hm yeah, I usually just get all my answers from Reddit now, even if google pointed me to it." and then the lyrics mentioned adding reddit to the search X'D I feel this. I occasionally rant to my partner about googling something and it comes up with wording I did not put as a result. An example of this is when I was looking for anime where the main character is a cat, like a literal cat (I was extremely high at the time) and I googled "Anime where the main character is a cat" and not only did no results actually help me past the first page (too high to continue), the first result said "15 most memorable anime cats" and the second was "10 anime characters who can transform into cats". I did not say that google. Where is the "main" part. I don't want to know about cats who appear in 1 episode in a 600 episodic series, I don't care.
That's Search Engine Optimization for you. Flood the internet with garbage content like listicles or retyped wiki articles, optimize it to appear as early in the search as you can so you can collect on ad revenue and user data.
I did some SEO stuff once and it made me feel like a bad person. Pretty much the only SEO I will do is going the extra mile for accessibility, but I do it properly to help visually impaired people, and it has the added benefit of boosting SEO. Usually.
A lot of ppl don't adhere to disability web standards because they are care about ppl with disability, it's because it makes robots have an easier time parsing and ranking your website if everything has it's proper alt text and many other stuff, haha :(

In defense of google (hate that I'm saying that) this isn't a problem that can be solved just by going after Google executives. If your views makes life worse in the village, having to interact with the other villagers will either help you understand that, or at least get you enough pushback to, if not reconsider, at least keep it to yourself. If your views make life worse for others, but 90% of the people you talk to are just people who agree with you on those and so you can more easily delegitimize people who disagree with you in real life, because, well, obviously all these other people agree with you, they must be wrong.
It's a bit of an oversimplification, but it's why internet bubbles tend to drive people towards more partisan/radical thinking, while having to actually go out and interact with a lot of different people tend to push people more towards... I guess center left? Less extreme, but more respecting the rights of others (which, at least in the US, is a left thing, I guess?).
But yeah, echo chamber bubbles tend to exhibit a certain sort of focused herd behavior I could see someone comparing to a group of zombies. It wouldn't be my go to, but I could see someone saying it.
@@thaddeusgenhelm8979Your village analogy doesn't work because villages murder people for being gay or even just women for showing ankles which doesn't hurt anybody. I mean at the end of the day people will always find ways to blame innocent people for the actions of aggressors. So better to at least let the victims keep to themselves.
Besides FaceBook specifically tried putting people with different political opinions together and that's what created all the animosity between family members. Because uncle Ted has n problem saying "maybe gay people need to be shot" on the internet because he's a fascist little bitch or some dumb idiot falls how ok line and sinker for Russia's propaganda telling young people it's okay to destroy storefronts because of some radical Marxism.
it scares me that my parents and so many older people i know do not realize anything has changed or that they are being advertised to
That ENDING is the SINGLE BEST way to show off patreon supporters I have EVER SEEN ♥♥♥♥♥
It's crazy how every video she makes is even higher quality than the last
The fucking reddit line is so accurate 💀
I'm glad I am not the only one.
When I tell people google search is not what it used to be some people think I'm crazy.
The worst part is trying to remember faintly how good it used to be and gaslighting yourself into thinking maybe it never was that great before really.
That's a really nice and funny song, i want to search more of this)
Also the unique feeling, so calming, i love the clay texture!
This gives me big Bo Burnham vibes.
This is the result of centralising all information on social media. We did this to ourselves. Run an instance of Open-Assistant at this point.
The difference between the other "recent Ukelele performance on RUclips" and this is night and day. SavannahXYZ I love you, so make an album already god damn it!
That Reddit part is so true!!!
It's nigh impossible to find any D&D info on the net without using Reddit. Most sites are like recipe sites, 90% personal stories and filler, 9% ads, 1% content.
What genre of music is this? I am absolutely obsessed and I NEED MORE. I love this too much and has been on loop for an hour now
Great song it really spoke to my heart because I 100% on the same page about having to type reddit into every search... and now google is just yahoo...
Kingdom Hearts sound effects at 1:39 got me feeling melancholic about the death of the usable internet
Thank you for this warning from the future, Savanah
The Reddit thing is so true, every problem that I have to search I just add Reddit in the front for more accurate results and is so annoying
I HAD to use my surround sound for this absolute BANGGER😫😫
This guy gets it😎😎
Oh yeah Google just ignores the quotes and time ranges whrn it feels like now, especially when theres an advert it thinks it can ram into your search
Yup, even more convinced you're from around my generation, especially the:"you did not heed my warning and now we're all doomed" in the video description, that's me every day.
Great work as always, You really make me wanna come out and do stuff outside my ghost modeler works.
This gives me such weird Bo Burnham vibes
I've also noticed the last handful of months google search has gotten way worse giving either irrelevant information or information that is YEARS old and doesn't work for the current codebase your working in.
RUclips doesn't work anymore either. Sometimes you'll search for an old video, and it seems like it's gone. But RUclips is just recommending videos and you have to scroll way down to find it.
Well, I would recommend Ecosia, I find the search engine works fine. On a relevant note, what a beautifully sung song and animated art piece!
i really love the artstyle in your animations
I thought it was just me till people started talking about it more.
Streaming services are bombarding us with ads, even though less commercials (ads) were why we switched to streaming in the first place.
Search engines are forgetting that we want to SEARCH for stuff instead of, you guess it, bombarded with ads.
Everything needs a subscription instead of a one-time payment.
I can go on.
"Don't Be Evil" Google's original motto
Using google sometimes feels like programming, where you need the proper keywords and syntax to get a reasonable result.
Also hi Savannah :D loved the song!!
Ironically, searching for a lot of programming content is garbage on Google because they don't allow symbols.
At least SO still works. Usually .
I love trying to find a specific thing on google and by the end my search query is formatted like "xxxxxxx xxxx xxxxx xxx" "xxxxxx" "xxxxx" -xxx -xxxxxxxxxx -xxxxxx -xx
At least programs do exactly what I ask them to. The search algo re-interprets my input whenever it feels like.
Operators don't work anymore. Type "Butter -peanut" and it will show you peanut butter.
I like how the fingerprints are there as texture, that looks amazing
thanks! the material is called clay d'oh, linked in desc if you're looking to use the same one!
This has major MOOD energy.... *AND I'M HERE FOR IT!*
