Seems to me that dropping the engine would make replacing the engine the easiest solution if you can get a working engine at a good price in the UK. I'm sure you will figure out what is best. In the meantime, your perseverance is inspiring to me and makes my day brighter. Thank you.
Yep, if anything has to go it’s the critters. The mechanical projects can wait in the workshop. The critters are constantly destroying your home. They bring you no joy. Your projects do. Best of luck. Love your channels.
It is an issue of priorities and the biggest benefit, I agree with your analysis, clear the creatures,. protect the house and then deal with the other issues in turn. The VW engine is an issue, getting it out would allow better access to the bolt and the oil leak, Plus, you would be half way to putting the new or repaired engine in. The snapped off bolt might have been work hardened just to make drilling it out more exciting.
Loved the way you told the van to stop after you pushed it out of the garage....you've trained it well. I grew up watching old cars come back to life so I actually enjoy listening to your chat about what's next Phil.
Hats off to you Phil that you keep cheerful. I watch both channels and it certainly hasn’t been your week. However, I hope you have a great weekend because you take a positive outlook on everything, pray that all goes well for you on both channels. You are an inspiration, and thank you for sharing your life.👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️❤️🇦🇺
If only the van were that easy to get started... Anyway... good luck with the van... the engine seems um... unwell... Hope you get it all sorted and remove the pests from your drains.
Re-tired Engineer whenever I had bolts that were snapped that far in to centre it for the drill I got a cap head bolt put it in a lath and drilled the centre with a drill just under the tapping size then hopefully if you damage the hole with the easy out then I would use the correct size drill for the tap then tap the thread best Regards from Liverpool
Wow! Maybe Billy at Chateau De La Basmaignee can use an extra Golf Club Cart and can take that of your hands. Lots of luck getting the VW fixed up. You’ve got this! ✨🙏🏼♥️
Phil I hope you can get your auto works done! I love that you remain positive no matter what! Get help to evict those nasty buggers from the château and block the entry so the water can drain away from your home. ❤❤
I wonder if you've got enough thread in the block to fit a new tensioner with a shorter bolt for testing purposes. Other than that I suspect it might be engine out time, drilling out the snapped bolt in a deep blind hole sounds like a nightmare. Al of 6D Diesels recently did a video on replacing a T4 TDI engine, if I remember correctly because a big end bearing seized and a con rod created additional crankcase ventilation.
I was absolutely amazed that the golf buggy started first time. Definitely agree taking that for the win of the day. I know you will get all of the vehicles going eventually one way or another. Love watching all of your videos on both of your channels.
As I know nothing about vehicle engines so I can’t make any helpful comment, but although my knowledge is zero, I still love watching your vlogs and learning about how vehicles work. Have fun back here in the UK. With love K🇬🇧❤️
Just a suggestion ..You can get a flexible drill bit extension for tight or small spaces with a drill out bit that can get stripped bolts and screws out. Great job btw.❤❤❤
Well, being completely honest at this point it would probably be easier to just replace the engine in the van. Yes, I know that it can be fixed, tap and die, tensioner, new seals, probably a tune up and keep going. The question to all that is: is that engine completely worth it? By getting a new one to bolt back in the van you would be able to get the rest of it done and be in use. Plus, that would offer you an engine that you could break down and either use as parts or rebuild it. I like working on them myself. Good luck with the uninvited guests at the Chateau. Have a great day
Just to add my 2pence worth. As you have the equipment. Taking the engine out, may be your quickest solution. You will have full access to all parts. Even to get the broken bolt out with extractors. Etc. If you find that the valves have been smashed you will be one step closer, for a replacement engine. Good luck which ever you decide. Great content keep it up.
I know the feeling, lately what ever I touch there seems to be a problem, suddenly the double door to the man cave the hinge broke, yesterday the padlock separated and I had to find an O-ring to insert it so it doesn’t fall apart, the exhaust fan lights stopped working so I had to fix all seven wires and this took a while but now I cannot shut the filter draw as the wires are now longer which isn’t a problem,
you can try putting a copper tube in the hole the bolt is snapped in and weld inside the tube so it wont stick to the threads of the hole, not sure if its going into aluminum or steel
what are the chances of finding a salvaged engine? I would imagine that drilling and tapping a new thread onto that broken screw tip might be possible, but, if the engine has been dead for a while, a replacement/ salvaged engine might be the better solution to make the van last longer
that is a good question .. but would it test for long enough on say two threads .. you could try to bottom it out and if it stops then might be worth a try ..
I would cut my losses and get rid of the van, but that’s just my opinion looking from afar. You have so much on your plate with the other vehicles, chateau and pub how do you find the time for Phil. I know it’s nice to keep busy, but you also need relax time it seems your on the go constantly. I’m only thinking of your well being my Dear
Car SOS makes it look so easy with a team at it but it's just you Phil motivation and so many hours on top of living makes editing almost pleasureable, still any positives help, you hoped to get the VW back on the road but a replacement engine an expensive Easter egg.The world pulls you in so many directions.
How about installing a new cam belt tensioner using the shorter/ broken bolt & then getting the motor started to see if the valves bounced off the pistons or not. That will help you decide if the motor is worth pulling to either fix the broken bolt or replacing with a good used.
First thing to find out is if that engine is an “interference “ engine or not. If the timing belt breaks on some engines, the pistons do not hit the valves.
It’s great that your golf cart started. And I’m not being a hater. But sometimes I think you just have so much on your plate. That I’m trying to think how to explain it. It seems like there’s always so much to do between the château your business, and now the vehicles. But you never get time for your mind just to settle down and enjoy. And I don’t want you to take this the wrong way because I sincerely worry about you. Have you thought about just buying some land and building a new house that looks old Incorporating the things that you enjoy about the château. But without all the constant work. It’s such a big yard. It’s such a big house. It just seems to me like it’s overwhelming. And I think people need a space where they can go and just relax. And you do not have that. And I. I mean you could have somebody working outside that château in the yard every day. Just keep up with it. Let alone the inside. It’s just an idea to have something newer that you wouldn’t have to constantly worry about. like I said, I enjoy both your shows. I enjoy you you’re always in a positive frame of mind. Which is enjoyable I just worry about it. I worry about all the pressure. You have all the worries you have. Anyway I’m glad the golf cart started.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤. Yes 🙌 the carts …high note of the day … it starts 😊 Hmm 🤔 easiest fix maybe a whole new block ??? Depending on price Dam it …. Boy I know your pickle….you need your van for camping at the car racing 😢 Good luck 🤞 with what ever you decide 🫶❤️❤️🥰
I'm a fan of V Dub T4s myself. Not a mechanic, so not much of an idea what your on about, even after your explanation. Good to hear you doing something bout the water rats not matter what their correct name is. Thanks m8, keep up the good work, stay vertical Eh!
The broken bolt maybe easier than you think, get a small chisel and hit with hammer, then with a small flatblade screwdriver it should wind out as there should be no tension on the broken bolt, good luck Phil
@@simonhadley2004I'm close to 70 now and stripping and rebuilding engines from when I was knee high to a grosshopper. I hold and engineering degree. But then I often say I was born with a 1/2 spanner in one hand, hammer in the other and a gas axe in the back pocket. I prefer to work onold stuff instead of the modern stuff. becauses it will just keep running.
Can't you do like you did with the bolt and instead of welding, maybe sodder a bit onto the screw left in the engine and then unscrew it that way. Like drill a skinny hole in the middle of the broken piece and sodder something to it that you can then grab with clamps to twist it out
Iget a 1.9 out a golf or polo. I stuck a 1.9 ahu out a polo in mine literally best and easiest thing i ever did and a mapped ecu off ebay. 4 yrs on and still loving it. Honestly transformed it wish id done it years ago. I fot an abl sat in my garden out mine but been sat in the rain a while there if ya need it.. did run yrs ago. Good spares? But id recommend converting it be cheaper to.... plug n play literally
Phil I’m really interested to see what you decide to do on the VW van… is it too far gone? Is it worth replacing the motor probably not or do you sell it for part but what part if the motor is gone and the body needs repair. I love it! Can’t wait
Ditch the range rover at Billys, and either sell the VW van as really don't need the stress and hassle. With the van if really wanting to keep it I would just buy a known working engine in the UK and then sell it. I would have less projects and a more modern, reliable daily driver. I have a reliable Volvo 940 auto estate and a more modern Toyota Auris Hybrid estate. Volvo in tank fuel pump failed at 201,000 miles but £80 Bosch pump and 6 hours of my time was fixed. A real good workhorse.
Why? I have a daily driver, in fact I have multiple daily drivers but these are projects which mean something to me and surely that’s the point? We do many things which aren’t worth it financially but are more than worth it emotionally
Darn so you can't even rebuild that engine. Its close but if you know those luv work on engines cause older is better. Do you or other contacts across the country line in De/Ger they would know any short cuts maybe know ways get another engine. Don't give up. Scotty Kilmer gave some info internet websights mech use find good data on things like this. If you know sone there across pond check there. Crack on!
My two cents, drop the engine. Once it's out, you can sort out the bolt and sort out if its toast. If its toast, perhaps you can source another motor from a breakers yard. Routing for you.

The broken bolt is in a blind hole, but it will not be bottomed out. I'd try a left hand drill bit, you might find it will unscrew the broken bit 🤞

My opinion Phil, as bad as the oil leak is I would just find another engine.
I'm sure you'll figure it out. You are really clever with vehicles

I think its great that the golf cart worked! You’ll make the right decision about your vehicles because youre experienced

Can you maybe use an EZ-Out broken bolt extractor? Drill a hole in the remaining bolt and screw in the extractor
you can try putting a copper tube in the hole the bolt is snapped in and weld inside the tube so it wont stick to the threads of the hole, not sure if its going into aluminum or steel

👍🏴😁✌️
A real catch 22. I have faith you'll figure it all out, Phil.
Be safe and careful.😊👍🙏
Would love if sometimes you show cool gadgets old and new that maybe general public don’t know
Did you check to see if there are enough threads remaining to at least test the engine?
that is a good question .. but would it test for long enough on say two threads .. you could try to bottom it out and if it stops then might be worth a try ..

drop the oil pan and see what goodies are inside before dropping the motor.

perhaps small the victories, but victories nonetheless!! don't wear yourself out! 🤺

What about a temporary rather shorter belt as a temporary measure, one that eliminates the dud tensioner?
Would it be possible to weld a threaded stud where the bolt was and attach the tensioner to the stud with a nut?
I bet u could sell that cart easily in your area!!! Yay
Always good to end on a good note ❤
Enjoy the beautiful day.😊

Your suggestion is typical of Old School Engineering. Something I have done myself multiple times over the years.
@Curiosity-NZ I'm in my fifties now, I did a 5 year apprenticeship on leaving school fixing lorries so have got 1 or 2 old-school tricks up my sleeve😂

Ah.. good luck!
Good luck on deciding on what to do i know you will figure it out.
I have exactly that same jump pack, brilliant aren't they 👍
Phil please look at the positive! Your little people mover car is running. Clean it up and sell it. You’re on a good roll!

Dunno why you don't have a boroscope, even a cheap one that attaches to your phone.
Get a set of easy outs to get that broken bolt out. Drill a small hole into the broken bolt and those easy outs will get it out easy peasy.

She runs that is a plus.👍
How about sump cover off and see what's in the oil. May quickly help you to condemn the engine.
Take the positive 😊😊😊
I would cut my loses on the vw as it will just use up so much time and Space , let it go ☹️
havent u got a magnetised screwdriver or chewing gum on the end of a screwdriver down thru hole

Cut the new bolt down a bit. And fit a new tensioner.
It’s snapped off at the threads inside so you cannot get any length bolt into it or that’s exactly what I would have done just to test the engine
Any recalls on that vehicle? Maybe get a free part.?😊
Can you drill a hole in that bolt and use a bolt extractor. I have used them with success.
Can you get a new engine
🙈🙊
Get bolt out the full stip down atleast you know she will easy do 250000 miles
Can i ask where in world you are ?
