  • Diagnose and Fix the Secondary Air Pump on a 2003 Mercedes AMG SL55 (R230). In the US this is known as the Smog Pump. This fault will cause the Check Engine Light (CEL) to illuminate and the error code P0410 to be set. This appears to be a common problem on Mercedes of this era.
    Tools Used:
    Small Spanners and sockets
OBDII code reader - I used a Foxwell NT530, but Bluedriver and, of course, SDS also worked for me.
Optional - Multimeter to check the relay and fuse
    Parts:
AMG Secondary Air Pump by SKP, part number SKAP913068 sourced from Rockauto.
4 pin 40Amp Relay, normally open
    Difficulty Level : Easy

I diagnosed the problem as well. I realized I had such a thing on my SL55 and I took them right off! Jumped in STAR and made the car forget all about it ;)

That’s the other option, it will probably still pass an MOT emissions test if the motor is already warmed up, I don’t know about other countries though.

@@techstuff-cars Yeah, I don't have emissions where I live so the removal of cats, stock exhaust and SAI system were the first mods I did to mine. Enjoy the SL, they're a lot of fun especially when/if you start turning the wick up and unleash the beast within :)

@@FuKnOveRkiLL can you please tell if this sequence is correct? I wanted to disable downstream oxygen sensors:
      1. Select your car
      2. Go to Control Units
      3. Go to Drive
      4. Go to MESFI 2.8
      5. Go to Development Data
      6. Go to Control Unit Adaptations
      7. Go to Control Unit Adaptations(Variant Coding)
      8. Go to Implizite Kodierung ME281 AMG C6-Stand
For EGR scroll down to 0176 and change Diagnose ein to Diagnose aus
For Secondary Air Injection scroll down to 0178 and change Diagnose ein Diagnose aus
For Post Cat 02 sensors scroll down to 0182 and change Diagnose ein Diagnose aus
      /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
      UNLOCK ME 2,8 SFI
      control unit groups
      drive
      ME 2,8 SFI
      development data
      actuations
      complete index of actuations
steuergerät entriegeln -> confirm (In English: ECU unlock for programming))
then apply variant coding while engine is still running.

@@fredrezfield1629 Hi, I try to explain this in the video. if you pull the hose off the check valve, with the engine cold. Start the car and you can feel the exhaust gas pulsing out of the check valve and then after about 30 seconds to a minute the check valve should close and you should not feel the exhaust gas coming out of the valve. If this is the case your check valves are ok. If the air pump is working you should hear the pump running and also feel the air coming out of the hose which attaches to the check valve. Hope this helps.
