      Hi yes I did freeze it. The only reason it needs to be frozen is if you can’t get to skinning it right away. Freezing it just preserves it until you have time to work on it.

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459
      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  Год назад +1

      No problem. Since this video I generally only do a few coats of silicone and skip the modge podge step. The silicone gives the fins some flexibility and will help them not to crack.

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459
      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  3 года назад +1

      It will lose a lot of its natural color, painting is the hardest part in my opinion. You could always do one with a clear coat and see how it turns out.

  • @SaucyWheels

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459
      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  3 года назад

      Thank you. While this paint job was a little much I have learned a lot and my current paint jobs look a lot better. Typically the fish loses all its color when you skin it and to replace that color you need to repaint over its natural markings.

I’m just sure not to bend the fins in a funny way when when I freeze them. They can last for months if done properly. When I have time I just put them in a bucket of water to thaw and have at it!

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459
      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  5 лет назад

      The tissue paper on the back stays on and keeps the fins strong you just cut off the excess tissue paper so you can’t see it. I would say the caulk is pretty important because it keeps the fins from becoming brittle and cracking.

      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  4 года назад

      Painting adds back the natural color you lost when mounting the fish. You could put a clear coat over it but the fish would be pretty gray and lost most of its color. All taxidermists paint their fish. This one was one of my first and the paint was a little much but they have become much more natural now.

    How hard would a Mahi Mahi be

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459
      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  5 лет назад

      Thanks for the comment, being 1000 miles from the nearest ocean I have never caught one, however I do have a bluefish in my freezer that I plan on doing a video of very soon I would assume it is similar in some ways being both a saltwater fish. I think a mahi mahi could be done, I would just be curious on how thick there skin is and the texture of it, if it rips or tears easy it could be difficult.

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459
      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  5 лет назад

      MOSSMYD it could still be done. You just want to try and be careful when skinning and placing it into your carving. I have completely cut fish in half and cut holes in fish with my knife by accident. When you place a damaged fish on your foam carving you can use epoxy sculpt to patch up the hole the arrow made, it might not be perfect but done properly can be just fine

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459
      @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459  3 года назад +1

      Yes good question. Basically I carefully take my knife above where the backbone ends and run it into the fishes head carefully not to poke through the skin. Twist the knife around a few times and the brain usually comes out it is white. On a smaller fish there isn’t much there.

    Fish skin needs to be fleshed properly and degreased in a denatured alcohol before mounting,50/50 of water and alcohol,at least a couple of hours but can be left in the mix till your ready to mount. You're missing some steps in the mounting process that you could learn with a You Tube search to make your mounts last, nice job carving your fish body.

      Ralph Jr thanks for the comment Ralph. I am always looking to learn more and get better! I did actually have the steps of fleshing and the denatured alcohol. It can be seen at 1:45 into the video. Did I do something wrong or any other steps I missed? Let me know, thanks!

    Why do you paint over it? I personally think it's pointless and looks stupid on fish. Why bother taxidermying it if you're going to cover up every natural detail? Why not leave it be?

    • @beginnerstaxidermyguide8459

      Oreo the Appaloosa because the little color that you may have when first put on the foam will fade and the fish will just be all gray, also there isn’t a professional taxidermist out there that is still in business that doesn’t paint there fish.
