- Fish taxidermist Steve Mathews first arrived in Cairns in the 1970s. At that time, the skin of the fish would be preserved and stuffed with hay, which proved difficult and varied in quality.
The new technique of molding was developed out of Cairns, right next to the Great Barrier Reef, with the help of Steve and has now been taken up worldwide. Steve has pieces hanging in the Louvre in Paris and the Smithsonian in the US.

That's awesome, cheers for sharing
This is not taxidermy.
I loved growing up around this with Steve and my grandfather making all the fish
Very cool dude
Any chance of an apprenticeship mate?
Well done Steve, good to see you are still operating and working at what you love. It's been a long time, I get back to Cairns now and again. We should catch up.
"even the smaller ones which when they were caught people thought they were great" 🤣a 3D artist
That's pretty cool ✌️
This was an amazing watch, and its amazing how different fish taxidermy is to other creatures. And to be commissioned by such prestigious places! Amazing work!
Much love and respect from Michigan
I really hope someone inherit his passion and skill. Well done Steve.
