I was able to learn about all the muscles and bones and everything else through pure reinforcement and practicing with my classmates- our books did not even have much color but we used our imagination and used the cadavers and ourselves to keep ahead of the curve. Med school was fun because we chose to be excited about what we learned and not pressured because of grades!
we are attempting to cover the topics that would be taught in a year long AP level Biology class, equivalent to a 101 level in a college or university. so it will be more complex than general high school biology.
First of all, thank you so much. Second of all, for those who think he is talking too fast, you can go to your viewing settings and lower the speed- not only is it slower, but it's slightly hilarious.
Thanks. The animations for Biology are actually created entirely by our Creative Director, Amber Bushnell, with the help of a consulting biologist, Brandon Jackson. Thought Bubble does the animations for World History exclusively.
Always astounded at how Hank and the team make science, especially complex anatomical functions, so accessible, when so many mind numbing videos on the internet bang on for hours with complex 'shit' for want of a better word. Of course science isn't 'easy', there'd be no fun if it were no challenge, but these people give you all the jargon and all the action without all the boredom. Great show.
It's amazing how all the little parts (both visible and microscopic) inside of you are a big deal on helping you function and live against things outside the body or to adapt the body to the environment.
Two small questions: - Do you workout a little or not at all? - If you don't workout: How much did your arm hurt the next days from all those curl reps?
I learnt about this when I was doing a course to become a fitness instructor. I remember taking several lessons to learn less about the process than you taught in under 15 minutes. Thankyou
My IB biology teacher used this video in class. So much more helpful than all those stuffy old videos from the late 90s with boring voice overs on lame animations. I actually learned a lot. Thank you so much for making these.
I really want to thank you for these videos. Without you I would be lost in my anatomy class. You're the reason I'm getting an A in my class. Not only do you clarify everything for me but you make learning FUN and enjoyable. PLEASE KEEP MAKING VIDEOS!!!
this video saved my life!!! trying to understand the myosin and actin filaments from my text book made me want to cry and jump off a bridge in tandem!!! Now I totes get it thanks to the schnazzy sliding filament model! Thank you snarky smart guy... you are my hero!
After the first 4 videos of Crash course Biology I had a new hobby which led to me enrolling in an introductory Biology course as an elective to my degree. 6 Months on, and I am now studying a double degree (Arts/Science) With majors In history, Biology and Psychology. In high-school I hated science, but I can honestly say thanks to you a passion has been ignited inside of me and I know look forward to many years of studying this fantastic subject that YOU introduced me too. Thanks.
So you managed to explain basic sliding filament theory in the space of 12 minutes from the beginning, while being absolutely engaging and funny at the same time? Better than any lecturer with any amount of experience that I've seen...
This channel is an absolute life save. I've an ISA on muscles tomorrow and I've been trying to get my head around the topic for days with no luck. I rewatched this a few times and then made notes as I went along, and finally its making sense! All is not lost! so THANK YOUUUUU!!!!!
You have no idea how appreciative I am of this channel. It's helped me go through A&P, Microbio, Bio l and now finally...bio ll 😂 you guys are a godsend
I feel that all Anatomy Courses should have tons of videos like this, but also focused at helping students pass practicals, and exams. Find professors who put their lectures into video presentations. That will help a ton.
hank, you have no idea how much these videos have helped me i'm on my way to becoming a nurse and these have helped my study tremendously!!! thank you so so so much!! DFTBA :)
U forgot sarcrolemme and sarcoplasm and the h,m,a and z zones ( I think it's just my a level course that I need to remember all this stuff damn there's too many sarcro
Wow that was so good. Thank you for dumbing it down for me and explaining it simply in a language that I could understand. If only all teachers talked and explained this way.
Hank, I know you don't get the chance to read all these comments but I hope you do read this so you know how influential you have been to me. I started my first year of University at the start of this year, majoring in History and Politics planning on becoming a teacher (as I have a passion for education).
It is so impressive how much you covered in 12 minutes, and how well you covered it! It took me at least of week of lectures to understand that before.. You even managed to cover rigor mortis! Nice!
I swear Hank is reading my mind. I was just reading about this on Wikipedia a few days ago. I was having a bit of trouble understanding, so thank you Hank for helping me out.
I'm really glad you videotape these. It makes it possible for me to repeat parts of your lecture I miss because I find myself concentrating on moving my muscles and thinking about what happens under the skin cover.
Why don't you show this video to your teacher, he might learn how to teach better, and thus be a better teacher and that means you will like him more and therefore you will learn more and enjoy to classes more. Don't however tell him he sux as a teacher as that will assuredly get you bad grades!.
I've had 2 lectures on this so far and I've understood more with this video than I did in those lectures. But in all fairness, the lectures didn't have pause and rewind features and this video doesn't require me to get up early and have minimal breakfast to attend!
Don't worry bout it! I failed my HL Maths exam last year, so they made me resit two subjects this session. I actually passed with a 4 in bio and I did literally no revision. If you've done more than nothing, then you'll be fine! Also, I hate IB
I totally brushed up on my muscle physiology with the video before giving a lecture. That's right: GIVING one. Also, totally used the middle school formal dance analogy. Thanks, Hank et al!
When the third phosphate is removed from ATP, you get ADP. The molecule has much less chemical energy, because the high energy bond between the last 2 phosphates has been broken.
Gosh, thanks so much, Hank! c: I have an exam tomorrow and I was really frustrated about not knowing a single thing! XD So I found this really useful, so much preach for you! ♥
My teacher couldn't answer this question and you made a point of reminding me. If the muscles resting state is contraction... Why do are muscles fatigue after sustained contraction when that would seem to require less respiration?
I heard somewhere that it has to do something with the nerves miscommunicating, creating a positive feedback loop, the more you want to relax them, the more they get contracted
UCSB biology upperclassman here... currently taking upper division physiology... this video is the perfect review tool; covers just about everything 100x better than the professors can with just slides
It's amazing how despite all the electricity and chemistry needed to activate a muscle, when I want to move whatever body part, it seems to do so instantly, and despite how many different muscles a movement requires, it usually works with awesome synchronization (i.e. the way we just wish we could make robots move but somehow you can always tell a robotic movement from a natural one).
Crashcourse guys. Can you please remember to update you playlist? I'm sure there are others like me who just put on the playlist while we do other stuff. Biology playlist is two videos behind at the time of writing. Thumbs up so they can see it.
Amazing videos guys. Watched a lot of them now and they are all very good at getting the info across. Studying to be a personal trainer and doing hnd level fitness. Again, great videos :)
Wow, this is really interesting. I never would have thought it was that complex. Our bodies are truly amazing, I found myself pondering my hand's movement throughout the video. Keep up the great videos!
I have a request; Can you make a Crash Course for every single academic discipline, from Physics to Philosophy and Geography to Geology. This isn't so I can do well in school, I don't even go to school anymore, I just would love to be knowledgeable about many fields and the funnest and easiest way to do that seems to be your courses.
The animation from 10:25 to 10:30 is slightly off from the audio. The animation does not show that the troponin is dragging the tropomyosin out of the way; the tropononin is just moving itself out of the way.
all cells (not stem) are specialised for a specific function. A tissue is a group of these cells working together. A muscle is an example of a tissue. An organ has two or more tissues to perform its function. I hope that helps, but not sure how specific you wanted to be
Thank you so much for this awesome episode!!! And the result that I got was also fantastic! The first time I got 100% in my Biology assessment!!! Thanks again for crash course!!! Keep on doing it!!!
Major kudos to Amber, the head of graphics. A visual learner like me cannot thank her enough!
I'm in the same place!
how did people 20 years ago even pass their classes without youtube channels like this one?
I've been researching into human anatomy and discovered a fantastic resource at Anatomy Blueprint Pro (check it out on google)

Amanda Martinez they cut up bodies for research
they actually studied, maybe?

God, this is so much easier than listening to a robot voice explain this. You make studying for my exams way more fun, dude.
I totally agree!
we are attempting to cover the topics that would be taught in a year long AP level Biology class, equivalent to a 101 level in a college or university. so it will be more complex than general high school biology.
You should write a book
First of all, thank you so much. Second of all, for those who think he is talking too fast, you can go to your viewing settings and lower the speed- not only is it slower, but it's slightly hilarious.
omg thanks xD
hw pls?
How it feels to watch Crash Course while stoned.
Tamara Rostro I tried it. HAHAHAHA thank you so much for bringing this to my attention
😁🤣🤣🤣🤣LOL

Joe T So true indeed!!! I am loving the challenge, Hank and the team really make it FUN!!
I have been struggling to understand this for over a week, and you managed to explain it clearly in 12 minutes. Well done. Very well done.
My uni prof made this WAY more complicated
YOU ROCK!
Cramming for an in class paper I have to write on this tomorrow. Finally understanding it! Thank you so much!
Probably the best CC video I've watched. Hank actually spoke at a normal speed!!
It's amazing how all the little parts (both visible and microscopic) inside of you are a big deal on helping you function and live against things outside the body or to adapt the body to the environment.
Two small questions:
- Do you workout a little or not at all?
- If you don't workout: How much did your arm hurt the next days from all those curl reps?
LOL ikr I thought he was going to stop much earlier!
Pretty sure that weight is probably nothing for him.
I learnt about this when I was doing a course to become a fitness instructor.
I remember taking several lessons to learn less about the process than you taught in under 15 minutes.
Thankyou
you teach me WAAAAAAYYYYYY better than my science teacher!!
man that comment was 6 yrs ago... how di that turn out?

He forgot to mention that muscles are antagonistics. Therefore, if one contracts the other one relaxed. So ATP IS REQUIRED ALWAYS
Thank you
I doubt he "forgot". Lol.
Hank, your presentation is much less annoying than the original episodes. I am glad because I enjoy your content.

soooo much better than 3 hour long power points followed by 3 hour long robotic voiced videos where I retain absolutely nothing
You're crazy but you're a lot better than my tutor so thank you.
I used his videos in my classes b/c I love them, he makes it fun!
After the first 4 videos of Crash course Biology I had a new hobby which led to me enrolling in an introductory Biology course as an elective to my degree. 6 Months on, and I am now studying a double degree (Arts/Science) With majors In history, Biology and Psychology. Better than any lecturer with any amount of experience that I've seen...
i did most of my revision for my gcse biology with Crashcourse and i managed to get an A* on my first exam so thank you hank
Wait, our muscle filaments need ATP in order to relax?
WHOOoooaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that's why dead bodies are stiff
cool
WOAH I never realised that!!!!!!
This channel is an absolute life save.
I've an ISA on muscles tomorrow and I've been trying to get my head around the topic for days with no luck. I rewatched this a few times and then made notes as I went along, and finally its making sense! All is not lost! so THANK YOUUUUU!!!!!

Hank, you da real MVP!
I feel that all Anatomy Courses should have tons of videos like this, but also focused at helping students pass practicals, and exams.

This was so helpful! What would I do without Crash Course?
I have a test on muscles this saturday and this video potentially saved my grades. Thank you so very much, Hank! Great timing!
I am SO grateful for this and for other crash course bio videos!
I never learned physiology in the class from proffessor who used to to teach us... it's u man who helped me master it....
Moral of the video, if you want a genius son then just name him Huxley :D
Hank... I may be old enough to be your mom.. but as a nursing student... I am in love with your adorable nerdy persona... your the best.
Learned more here than in my class - plus the guy was really cute.
You're not the only one! I just love life and learning amazing things.
Here for my anatomy test. Thank God for CrashCourse cuz I didn't understand shit from that lecture >.
hank, you have no idea how much these videos have helped me i'm on my way to becoming a nurse and these have helped my study tremendously!!! thank you so so so much!! DFTBA :)
Great video! Easy to understand! I need more of these videos to get me through A&P!
I think these descriptions are amazing, so easy to understand for a "mature age" and previously uneducated student. Thank you.
This makes A&P fun to learn!!! Haha ☺️
Congratulations you're in AP want a cookie?
Steven it's not AP it's A&P..... they are not the same.
That's nice

The amazing thing about this whole process is how fast it can occur. From the description it sounds like it would take too long for it to occur.
The speed of reactions is insane. I think the small distances things are happening over are what let millions of reactions happen every second.
