I was going to comment on how awesome and helpful this video was but instead I just want to say how much I appreciate that Hank chews with his mouth closed. Like, seriously.
+Nancy Eskander I also award him for making chem fun too... this stuff is great Learning/Entertainment..... far better than reality tv and over dramatized sitcoms
well, i wasn't exactly referring to the animations, more like the funny things he says and how he teaches it all. i guess the animations are cool too though. :/
Hank is my hero! I failed biology twice before I started watching crash course, and now I'm passing biology on my third try! It seriously made NO sense to me before, I was so lost and found biology uninteresting and disgusting, but thanks to Hank I find biology hilarious now! Thank you Hank! I'm always recommending crashcourse to everyone I know whether they are taking biology or not lol.
My god, I think I finally understand sodium and potassium channels and depolarisation properly. When I was doing A levels three years ago I only kind of got it. Now I've come across it again at uni and this has helped so much!
whenever my text book for my uni summer paper makes no sense, i youtube a crash course video to see if there is one for the topic im on, and there almost always is, and i use that to help me make sense of my text book! these videos are so incredibly helpful!
So do I. I like it because it feels more interactive to have someone talking to me in a common dialect about a topic that's relevant to what I'm studying.Good stuff. :)
If y'all are stressing on how Hank is talking too quickly (I honestly find it fine since this is "Crash Course" and it's supposed to aid you before a test, etc but that's just my opinion), you could also watch videos on "Bozeman Science" that are much "slower" and just as thorough and explanatory. Some advice from a previous AP Bio student :)
or just slow the speed down. I find Bozeman to be boring and painful but that is just my opinion. But you can easily make it slower by hitting the setting button and putting the speed at .75. Captions also help for all the long scientific words.
I just thought I would thank you guys at crash course. I've watched all of your science videos just out of enjoyment of the learning. Now I'm finding that my friends are also starting to watch them in order to help them revise and understand our curriculum. So thankyou on all of our behalf.
+mark yisser This is so ironic, you're criticizing him because you think he didn't understand the video, while in fact you are the one misunderstanding his comment.
harry is a brain surgeon. he pulls off a man's turban to perform surgery on him and lord voldemort is in the back of the man's head. find out what happens next in "harry potter and the nodes of ranvier" coming june 2018
I love this guy...He is very funny and get the job done...For the first time I actually understand the nervous system. This video has been very helpful.
I watched this video before going in to do my A-level biology exam today, and the essay was on neurones. All I want to say is thank you so much for doing this video as I was able to use the knowledge that this video and my revision gave me to answer it. Again thank you. Keep up the great work!
i think Crash Course should have hundreds of millions of views, to be able to carry on with this work and keep 'em coming. but society would rather give it all to justin B :(
This was extremely helpful for my psychology course! I really enjoyed the use of humor, it somewhat helped to increase my comprehension, and really aided in captivating my attention, which the articles I had read could not seem to do.
Oh my god, I could cry. I have an exam in my Brain & Behavior class on Tuesday, and trying to read my textbook is proving impossible. The words aren't making any sense and I've been at this for days. I can't understand or retain a thing I'm reading. I typed nervous system into youtube with the desperate hope that there would be a video explaining some of the basics, hoping even more that there might be a Crash Course on it... Here it is. This probably won't cover every single technical term I need to know from the first 5 chapters of this book, but at least it will give me a core understanding to work off of to make the text make more sense. Bless you, Hank.
I'm just going to throw out my lecture notes and use CrashCourse from now on. Every time I spend too much time trying to find stuff on the internet, I always find myself back here. CRASHCOURSE SAVES THE DAY AGAIN.
I have a semester exam, and truly, without you Oh Dear Crash Course, I would have flunked the test! Thanks, keep on what you're doing! Thanks again! Love U!
Seriously, you are my hero. I could ditch all of my classes and still pass only on your explanations! Almost.... The graphics are awesome, helps a lot for the visual. Keep up the good work! Xx
I love all the crash course videos. I have been confused on the Nerve Impulse for a week now and after watching I now understand it way better than I had during a 2.5 hour lecture. Thank you crash course!
mochalex Good way to remember it is:Afferent and Efferent are the SaMe. Sensory afferent Motor efferent.Hope this helps. That is the ONE thing my teacher has taught me. Good luck :)
Very helpful! Thank you!! S A M E does work for remembering afferent and efferent. (somatic afferent motor efferent = S A M E ). Depolarization= becoming less negative, EX:-70 mV to 30mV. Hyperpolarization = becoming more negative, EX: -70mV to -90 mV. Repolarization = moving back to RMP -70mV.
Bob The Bodybuilder Yeah, but you also go out, and in, and out, and in and out and in and out andinandoutandinandoutand AAAGH and out, and in, and out.
Excellent video. very easy to understand and covers the basics well. my only constructive criticism would be that cuts are a bit too jolting and difficult to keep up with.
Hank I want to really thank you for what you're doing. Yesterday since our school switched to charter we now have bench mark exams that are usually pretty difficult and 75% and up is considered advanced. Our teacher basically had too much to do and didn't teach us anything. I watched this video and the one on the circulatory system and out of all my teachers classes I got the highest grade which was a 100% because of you Hank. Do not stop doing what you're doing, because it's great.
Awesome videos!!! love love love!!! Thank you for the more clear, fun and visual review that I needed for my Anatomy & Physiology course. You are helping me pass :-)
i love you man cause i can listen to everything you're saying and i don't get bored. you're making revision a lot more bearable. thanx for saving me in my exams
Just to inform you, we use crash course in the Netherlands on high schools too! I use your videos as well as others for my English teaching and I love it! The videos are amazing and helped me when I was a student myself at high school! Crash course is a legacy ❤
thanks a bunch. i never really understood ''the nervous system'' which is an important topic in my course until now and i can't believe i didn't understand this, though it's pretty broad and complicated.
I think I love you because of these videos. The brain physiology part of my college Psychology class makes my brain so confused, everything else was chill until this section came up.
your videos are simply amazing... thanks for these videos, these will help millions of children around the globe to understand these lessons easily... and not forgetting the man in the video explains things very well, he is amazing...
I wish I had this glorious man to teach me about this when I was at school! now I'm studying to become a psychology teacher and am using this video in my lesson plans! :) the students will love it.
See I spent all week trying to understand this from my stupid A&P instructor. He makes me wonder if he even knows what he is talking about. You're awesome.
I have trouble paying attention in class and understanding when the teacher is completely boring, but smarty pants with a sense of humor catch my attention with their relatable or relevant examples. Not that it is always suppose to be fun, but it is more interesting when it is perfect for those who have different learning styles. I enjoy science, biology, human anatomy, etc soooooo much more watching videos like these and actually get it whatever it is Im struggling with! Cool video, thanks!
Crash Course is actually one of the best things ever. From religion to chemistry and biology, from ancient history to politics - they have videos on like everything, ALL of which I find absolutely fascinating and entertaining - best criteria for good learning! These videos honestly inspire my thirst for knowledge. When I watch them I enjoy learning all this cool stuff. That's what teaching is all about - inspiring. School really turns me off learning, so I come here instead... :)
Good... except not all neurons are myelinated :( like a lot of the cerebral cortex (brain's gray matter), also the postganglionic neurons of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system.
Need to remember Afferent and Efferent? A=Arrive, E=Exit :)
Dylan Sharp You sir just earned me two extra points for a test on Monday. :D
+Dylan Sharp Thanks mate :D
Makes so much sense! I have a quiz on Wednesday and this tip will really help. :)
haha no problem! Happy to help!
+Dylan Sharp oh thank u , this can be useful :D
I love Crash Course because I can procrastinate productively.
+Rebecca Gourlay
whatever works for you
TRUEEE!
Yes, exactly, instead of studying other subjects, I can watch crash course and learn more!
most accurate comment ever
Wow, you just gave me a new brain cell
I was going to comment on how awesome and helpful this video was but instead I just want to say how much I appreciate that Hank chews with his mouth closed. Like, seriously.
When he said "Don't zone out here!" I was totally zoning out
Yep
at that very moment lol .. perfect timing
I know right
I started to zone out XD
Haha, totally!
Remember SAME
S- Sensory goes with
A-fferent ( to CNS)
M-otor goes with
E-fferent (from CNS)
Does anyone else start learning something in school and immediately come to crash course to make it easier
Emma M meeeeee
Emma M Me right now.
+Emma M You my friend read my mind
+Emma M Basically, what most students are doing rn :)
Sometimes my school just cuts the bullshit and plays crash course in class.
On behalf of all students with overactive sympathetic divisions due to upcoming science tests, thank you.
I award him the "Making biology fun!!" Award. Anyone agree?
+Nancy Eskander
I also award him for making chem fun too... this stuff is great
Learning/Entertainment..... far better than reality tv and over dramatized sitcoms
+Nancy Eskander agree...
+Nancy Eskander *them, you'v got to give credit to the team that make the animations.
well, i wasn't exactly referring to the animations, more like the funny things he says and how he teaches it all. i guess the animations are cool too though. :/
his personality is perfect...
because i find the others a bit lacking when they try to fill the spot.
guess that's why he got so rich from doing it
Hank is my hero!
Omg, this is a 2 hour lecture condensed into 12 minutes of simplified awesomeness!
heyysimone Yes, God bless the Crash Course lol The pizza really helped me out with understanding it all.
heyysimone I'm in 5th grade and I'm learning this
Murmur Talib It's always good to start early.....
+Krishna Dhulipal
Need to remember Afferent and Efferent? A=Arrive, E=Ewww go away
+Patricia Kamara Hey, cool! Thanks!
+Patricia Kamara The "A" part of you idea works well. It's just the "E" part that doesn't appeal to me. Anyway, thanks for the analogy!
+Patricia Kamara I just thing of E=Exit
+Patricia Kamara J-just no.
+Patricia Kamara how about A = arrive and E = Exit?
Watching all the nervous system ones because I have a test tomorrow. This one is definitely the oldest one. Nervous system cage match!!!
Mol Berry lol i have a final after tomorrow
Nervous system cage match = anxiety
If y'all are stressing on how Hank is talking too quickly (I honestly find it fine since this is "Crash Course" and it's supposed to aid you before a test, etc but that's just my opinion), you could also watch videos on "Bozeman Science" that are much "slower" and just as thorough and explanatory. Some advice from a previous AP Bio student :)
simplymaci. i honestly just pause the video as i take notes... and crash course is amazing, my favorite next to khan academy!
or just slow the speed down. I find Bozeman to be boring and painful but that is just my opinion. But you can easily make it slower by hitting the setting button and putting the speed at .75. Captions also help for all the long scientific words.
simplymaci
What is meant by AP in AP bio?
I'm seeing this everywhere. Can you explain it?
anatomy/Physiology or assistant physician student
Advance placement I'm assuming.
I gotta say, thanks for putting these systems up! A great way to learn and/or review bio knowledge! You've earned my subscription!
I just thought I would thank you guys at crash course. I've watched all of your science videos just out of enjoyment of the learning. Now I'm finding that my friends are also starting to watch them in order to help them revise and understand our curriculum. So thankyou on all of our behalf.
I lost it at "Harry Potter and the Nodes of Ranveir"
+Christiaan Voldstad
Easy explanation... you're just an idiot that's all
+mark yisser
Quite blunt aha
+adam shah I must be missing something
+Christiaan Voldstad what?
+mark yisser This is so ironic, you're criticizing him because you think he didn't understand the video, while in fact you are the one misunderstanding his comment.
harry is a brain surgeon. he pulls off a man's turban to perform surgery on him and lord voldemort is in the back of the man's head. find out what happens next in "harry potter and the nodes of ranvier" coming june 2018
it's 2018 now
They said it's coming out in June so ya gotta wait ;)))
Lol😂😂😂😂😂
B... But nodes of Ranvier are only present in the PNS... 😌😌
Incorrect. Nodes of Ranvier are "gaps" in between areas of myelinated axon (or schwann cells in the PNS). They are present in the PNS, and CNS.
Hank/Crash Course = lifesaver = the only thing that makes understanding science/biology/psychology (anything really) understandable!
Combining humor and effective teaching strategies = PERFECTION!
This video is the perfect balance between informal, funny language and actually informative. Fantastic graphic design too, love the colors. Good job!
this 12 minute vid taught me more than my EMT book did
i know its rly bad
i think Crash Course should have hundreds of millions of views, to be able to carry on with this work and keep 'em coming.
but society would rather give it all to justin B
:(
Justin B is stepping his game up, I wouldn't say that he is the problem anymore..I think it's just some people aren't into science like that.
Bless you, Hank.
Harry Potter and the Nodes of Ranvier. That just made my life lolol
Crash Course, you are my savior. I wouldn't be able to live through my biology quiz without you. (6:41 awesome diagram!)
You do this better than my Biology teacher :p
I know, My bio teacher hates me and I didn't even do anything, just on the first day he didn't like the way I was wearing my scarf.
HI ROXAS!
I'm just going to throw out my lecture notes and use CrashCourse from now on. Every time I spend too much time trying to find stuff on the internet, I always find myself back here. CRASHCOURSE SAVES THE DAY AGAIN.
Me in school: ZZZzzzZZZZzzz
Me a day befor final exam: CrashCourse! CrashCourse! CrashCourse! O.O
also yes, it was today.
Which country you are???
I have a semester exam, and truly, without you Oh Dear Crash Course, I would have flunked the test! Thanks, keep on what you're doing! Thanks again! Love U!
Thank you for making my Biology exams just that much more achievable!!
Seriously, you are my hero. I could ditch all of my classes and still pass only on your explanations! Almost....
The graphics are awesome, helps a lot for the visual.
Keep up the good work!
Xx
apart from you talking so fast, this is better than school!
Hank you always make biology so much less boring. Thank you crash course.
i would totally read/watch harry potter and the nodes of ranvier
so would i
Lol same
I love all the crash course videos. I have been confused on the Nerve Impulse for a week now and after watching I now understand it way better than I had during a 2.5 hour lecture. Thank you crash course!
my sympathetic divison is running rn bc ap bio exam is tomorrow
Sonali Pustam how's college lol
me rn bc of the ap exam on monday
actually i took ap bio as a junior so im still in high school!
instead of revising by reading and reading my notes, I watch ur videos over and over again. thank u soo much exactly what I need.
I have enough trouble with affect and effect. Now I have to keep track of afferent vs. efferent??
ha
affect is verb. effect is noun.
mochalex I remember it that motor is efferent as it is 'eff off' haha so it is causing an effect, not sure if that helps
mochalex Good way to remember it is:Afferent and Efferent are the SaMe. Sensory afferent Motor efferent.Hope this helps. That is the ONE thing my teacher has taught me. Good luck :)
mochalex Efferent Exits info, Afferent Attracts info
It is nice to have a more real view on biology in a relatable way! Thank you guys!
Tom Stewart Isn't depolarization when the peak is met at 40mV and it returns back to -70mV by the release of K+ ions? So it's becoming more negative.
Just listened to CrashCourse with headphones in for the first time. The sound design is crazy good.
A comes before E, hence:
*Afferent* to Brain
*Efferent* from Brain
E for exit (from brain)
A for arrival (to brain)
Bob The Bodybuilder Yeah, but you also go out, and in, and out, and in and out and in and out andinandoutandinandoutand AAAGH and out, and in, and out.
Here's an easy way I learned back in my university days:
SAME
Sensory = afferent
Motor - efferent
I don't know why you guys find it confusing
You have saved my life.
I understood more from you than I did from the actual textbook.
Thank You So Much.
DFTBA Hank.
My brain is quite fascinated by itself right now
CrashCourse is not a lifesaver for test but a fantastic helper to prepare for the classes the next day. Thank you for this very informative video.
Excellent video. very easy to understand and covers the basics well. my only constructive criticism would be that cuts are a bit too jolting and difficult to keep up with.
Hank I want to really thank you for what you're doing. Yesterday since our school switched to charter we now have bench mark exams that are usually pretty difficult and 75% and up is considered advanced. perfect exam revision! I'll never forget what the nodes of ranvier are now xD
You have a gift of making people understand the complexity of your work.
I love these videooos ! keep doing what you're doing :)
Ya! if they stop i might fail.
Cody Kramer ahahaaaa.....i tooo think so...;p
This is actually really good.... I had to watch this for a science assignment and I would not be surprised if I watched this again...
Awesome videos!!! love love love!!! Thank you for the more clear, fun and visual review that I needed for my Anatomy & Physiology course. You are helping me pass :-)
Hank, you're helping me pass nursing school. This is the BEST.
Surprisingly comprehensive
Hank Green,
You are single-handedly getting me through the first year of my medical degree.
Thank you,
Grateful Medic
So who else ordered pizza about 4 mins into this episode because... mhhhhh Pizzzzaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa?
Ik right? Same.
LiwenDiamond ikr i got really hungry
+LiwenDiamond
lol
Meeeee!
i love you man cause i can listen to everything you're saying and i don't get bored. you're making revision a lot more bearable. thanx for saving me in my exams
I'm a sponge and I find this whole biology class offensive!
Just to inform you, we use crash course in the Netherlands on high schools too! I use your videos as well as others for my English teaching and I love it! The videos are amazing and helped me when I was a student myself at high school! Crash course is a legacy ❤
My test will be going A+ tomorrow
Enigmoro wish we all had that confidence
Mine too😃
thanks a bunch. i never really understood ''the nervous system'' which is an important topic in my course until now and i can't believe i didn't understand this, though it's pretty broad and complicated.
Did anyone else feel slightly awkward watching him carefully eat that pizza? It's hard to explain why, I just did.
The Pip lol i have a test tomorrow a final
The Pip its awkward when he was talking and eating in the same time
+The Pip
Huuhh???!
+The Pip
Huuhh???!
I have a big HESI test tomorrow. Just want to say THANK YOU in advance!
These videos helped A LOT!
Thanks, this will help a lot with my notes!
OMG you just saved me for my physiology exam! I finally get it!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Can someone please create an "Unless your a sea sponge" T-shirt?
I think I love you because of these videos. The brain physiology part of my college Psychology class makes my brain so confused, everything else was chill until this section came up.
Crash course. When the exam is tomorrow and you barely studied.
your videos are simply amazing... thanks for these videos, these will help millions of children around the globe to understand these lessons easily... and not forgetting the man in the video explains things very well, he is amazing...
I like your videos, you guy make biology FUN!!
I wish I had this glorious man to teach me about this when I was at school! now I'm studying to become a psychology teacher and am using this video in my lesson plans! :) the students will love it.
afferent = arriving!
efferent = exiting!
I never really got the whole action potential and resting potential bit in class. This made my day. Thank you heaps!!!!
Afferent: ''a, ad'' means ''to'' in Ancient Latin
Efferent: ''e, ex'' means ''away from'' in Ancient Latin
thank me later
It might be the fact that I am in Latin III, but that is exactly how I remember them.
it's later bert
they say Latin is a dead language, but it's a huge part in the meanings of modern day English vocabulary.
Its called Latin, not ancient latin...
Kirsten Raphael I think there's only an Ancient Greek, and "just" Latin.
Unless it evolved in medieval times..
thank you for making these videos! its very handy when you don't understand or need a visual explanation of things from the textbook.
dear crashcourse,
you are my bio mark.
Mr. Hank Green, thank you for never forgetting to be awesome.
I love this guy! Smart and funny makes an attractive person. 😊
there is another thing that will make you more attractive
See I spent all week trying to understand this from my stupid A&P instructor. He makes me wonder if he even knows what he is talking about. You're awesome.
Now every species has a nervous system unless you are, wait for it,..... a sea sponge (mongol clip plays)
Quinn R Conrad Because they have confident system
Crash course saves my life. You guys are heroes.
Is it just me or was there something oddly cute about his pizza-eating demonstration?
I think when he goes down to take another bite it looks like a cute little dinosaur :3
He's very cute! 😊
I have trouble paying attention in class and understanding when the teacher is completely boring, but smarty pants with a sense of humor catch my attention with their relatable or relevant examples. Not that it is always suppose to be fun, but it is more interesting when it is perfect for those who have different learning styles. great, now i want pizza.
same
Great After reading your username I want breakfast
😃😎😵
Crash Course is actually one of the best things ever. From religion to chemistry and biology, from ancient history to politics - they have videos on like everything, ALL of which I find absolutely fascinating and entertaining - best criteria for good learning!

another great book name: percy jackson and the bowmans capsule
These videos may be the reason I'm passing Honors Anatomy.... I love you, Hank.
Fantastic video :) are there any videos on the synapse and transferal of neurotransmittors from the presynaptic neurone to post synaptic neurone?
Yes in crash course a and p
Wut?
Hank. I love you. I really hope this saves me from failing. It probably will. I love you.
Good... except not all neurons are myelinated :( like a lot of the cerebral cortex (brain's gray matter), also the postganglionic neurons of the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system.
Good video for the day before exam...crash course, actually saved my educational life some how.
The dislikes were sea sponges
This was much more entertaining and tolerable to watch than the early chemistry episodes.
Harry Potter and the nodes of ranvier, BRAVO HANK
Told my bio teacher about your videos and now she's assigning these for homework. ^.^ Easiest/Best A ever!
