In this video, we'll discuss how to choose the correct Unistrut channel for your application.
First, determine how much weight your channel will need to support.
Pro Tip: The higher the gauge, the thinner the steel, and the less weight it can typically hold.
Now, let's take a look at the different Unistrut channel profiles in descending order of strength.
Once you've narrowed down your selection, you'll need to take a look at the engineering data associated with that channel profile to make sure it's still a good fit.
Will your channel be supporting that weight vertically, as a column? Or horizontally, as a beam? Look at the specific Column and Beam Loading Charts, associated with your channel, to see how much weight different spans of channel can hold.
Also keep in mind that adding holes to your channel can decrease its strength, anywhere from 5% to 30%, and make sure to factor that data into your calculations if necessary.
Here's something else to consider. How soon do you need your material? Some Unistrut channel profiles are more readily stocked than others. If you are working within narrow time constraints, you might want to consider: P1000, P3300, P4100, P5000, or P5500 channels over less readily available ones.
Now that we've determined the right channel for the job, we need to decide on the finish.
That will depend on where it's going and what you need to do with it. Will it be exposed to the elements, or in a high humidity environment? Will you be welding your channel, painting it or powder coating it? If necessary, review our product finishes page to determine which will work best for your application. We'll link to it in the description.
Perhaps your application requires fittings to be connected to the channel on two or more sides of the channel. If that is the case, you may need to consider a back-to-back channel profile or other channel combination.
Another important consideration is whether to purchase a solid channel or one with holes or slots.
Unistrut manufactures channel with a variety of hole patterns, with T-Slot being the most common and most readily available.
Now that you've carefully considered all of your options, you are ready to start designing or building your project!
In today's video, we focused on Unistrut's most common channel width, 1-5/8”, but Unistrut also manufactures 1-1/4”, A-Series channel, as well as a 13/16” wide channel, the P6000, and it's low-profile counterpart, which is only 13/32 of an inch high, the P7000.
