"yeah, hey i totally play cedh so i think this 3 mana card that works 10% of the time is super cool in this format that ends on turn 2 pretty often, what do you guys think?"
I have a black border fork I shoehorn into most of my red decks out of spite and you’d be surprised how good it can be; but they are right floor is below the floor it kinda stinks; no one counters my fork so why pay more for a certainty I’m already not worried about. WHAT IM CONCERNED ABOUT IS THIS MAN READ THE ONE RING AND CHOSE THIS OVER THAT LIKE BRO WHAT
As a non-CEDH player, you all have quickly become my favorite content creators. I feel like I learn so much more about the game from you all. Even if you can't remember the card names!
Mostly because they’re not cringe. They’re pretty relatable. They’re not robotic, or sponsored by Wizards and they say what’s on their mind. I mean, HAVE YOU WATCHED THE BIT ABOUT “Display of Power?” Slap my face and call me a Secret Lair, because that comment was an unfathomable crushing brutality of truth!! “0/10!!”
Looking at the list of archers, just the first page of Scryfall has archers that don't have reach. In defense of the Orc Bois (Bowmasters), they don't block flying creatures. They kill them.
Thank you guys for accurately assessing Display of Power. That card is a major trap and I've seen a lot of people online hyping it up, glad that y'all don't just judge cards by their ceilings!
Note: Grand Abolisher does not protect WGD loops. The dragon can still be bounced or exiled once the first trigger has resolved and the animation aura's sacrifice trigger is on the stack.
Something I've noticed a lot of people overlooking with Aragorn, the Uniter is his high level of synergy with Painter's Servant. Turning your whole deck into Lava Spikes or Titanic Growths could actually be extremally relevant on top of Grindstone/Sphinx's Tutelage combo. I know the combo isn't as viable anymore, but you can also just use it to mill yourself out and win with Thassa's Oracle.
Agree with Dylan on Gandalf. Felt similarly about the Azorius Heliod. It never took a tournament down afaik, but definitely won games due to people not being sure wtf to do, but never got to do its thing again a second time against the same people. Either way, I’m building a high power deck with him for MonoW (trying to get a deck in in color and color combo) with a few combos I could pull at instant speed.
The chaos at the beginning, the best way to start a review. Also, absolutely was waiting for this, for some reason after the short with Orcish Bowmasters yesterday i thought this was up. Glad it is now!
someone probably commented this already but i was hoping to see you guys talk about Borne Upon a Wind maybe some other time still loved the pod cast keep up the good work!
Hi guys, love the content, these are honestly my favorite videos whenever a new set drops! Keep it going, I'm not sure if any of you actually is a hulk player (I imagine no from the way you talked about it in the last few videos) so I just wanted to give my 2 cents. I'm the person who's built and maintains the abzan tymna halana deck on the database (there's 2, not the samwise one). When samwise was first spoiled, I was also very excited about it since it simplified the pile. And everything that simplifies the pile, means you can cut slots from the deck to make a better overall deck with fewer slots actually dedicated to the combo itself. That being said, after extensive playtesting with my local group I can confirm the following. It is a much simpler and cleaner line to both play and execute. Pretty much the only counterplay once a hulk death trigger resolves, is a timely otawara which admittedly they won't have every time. But I've also find that if you happen to draw any of the combo pieces, namely samwise, the cat or abolisher, it can make things a lot more complicated for you since you'll basically have to cast those cards to win. Now we are talking about cheap cards, yes, but putting them out in the field can make the susceptible to exile removal which can mess up your lines. So I'm currently back to my previous pile of abolisher + 1 cmc sac outlet + activated sleeper. This does 2 things. First is that an otawara cannot stop you since you can always sacrifice anything they target in response and either get another piece from the deck or animate it back. And secondly, if you happen to draw any of the pieces, it's not a problem since your combo has many parts that can be interchanged with one another. Another thing it incidentally does, is allow you to loop utility creatures such as skyclave apparition to remove any hate pieces on the board. This means that the deck essentially only folds to tutor hate on the 1st dies trigger or dies replacement effects (I know that technically containment priest effects also affect us but these aren't as common). That's my 2 cents for any hulk players out there, feel free to check out the decklist that I still maintain and will keep updating for as long as I can.
Thank you all for not making me feel bad about playing a cedh deck. I played for many years in modern, and I love edh. I'll play casually as well but there are games where I want to go as fast as possible and just try to win. And I never thought there was anything wrong with that. So you guys kick ass.
Ive seen Orcish Bowmasters played 7 times now, its been countered, bolted, it sat there and was played around, it landed and did nothing as a player won during that turn cycle, and it killed 3 of Edric's creatures early only to get Resculpted, and to be honest the 4/4 Elememtal did more than the Bowmasters did in the long run.
8:32 also stops k’rrik, drannith, Magda, ornithopter, rograck, krark, sakashima, and soooo many more. I feel we all might be wrong and it’ll be better than we thought. This tends to happen.. know what I mean? 22:12 this dwarf and be crewed on the same turn and you can play a mama crypt if you sol ring for example. With xorn out, it’ll double. So I would make room for it
What is a great with boromir Is you can pair it with ratadrabik of urborg. This allows you to have infinite boromir and death triggers. You sac boromir w/ ratadrabik out create a non-legendary boromir token that targets it’s self to give it tempted by the ring to make it legendary and you will always have one out.
One thing about Nasty End is that you actually go UP in cards. Playing Village Rites (one card)requires you to sacrifice a creature (one card), so it’s more card velocity than card advantage.
I am surprised you guys brought up some magda cards but didn't bring up Gimli of the Glittering Caves. A dwarf that can make 3 treasures a turn is pretty huge for magda and being a 2/1 double strike with magda out makes him pretty evasive.
Cam I'm a Magda junkie as well and agree with the Magda cards but how about the Gimli of the Glittering Caves from one of the precons? 2R 1/1 Double strike, when a legendary creature enters the field under your control it gets a +1/+1 and whenever it deals combat damage, make a treasure. Gloin does feel more consistent for sure but an unhindered Gimli attack can allow for more explosive Magda uses.
As soon i saw that card I thought the same but i think the problem relies on the 1/1 , maybe if it was 1R instead of 2R it would be better , i don't know , being a 1/1 sucks most of the times and you won't be casting a lot of legendaries for it to grows and adding another 3mana dwarf mmm i don't know i think Gloin would be more consistent only because it's a 3/3, however i'll be testing both and see which one works better 😁
Yeah same feelings was hoping a LotR set would give some good dwarves but looks like we still waiting for hopefully Commander Masters with maybe some dwarves or changeling/shapeshifters and Eldraine on the horizon.
I think Lotho has a home in decks like Tivit and Atraxa that have a big commander to ramp into that will provide you immediate value. Hitting them faster can provide a ton of momentum.
I just got done with a cEDH evening where we all hit our stride and took the loses well because each game was packed with interaction and there wasn’t 5 turns of preparing for an epic battle. People were posturing for explosive things by turn 4 but interaction made the game last longer. Once a game was finished we all just shuffled up and from turn one of the next game we were playing interactive magic.
Historically archer creatures can not have reach as long as they deal direct damage. This fits with that theme. They're still "Shooting" something, including flying creatures sometimes.
I dont see how Stern scolding is a very situational counters, after testing it I think you are rating the card way to low just because it doesnt counter Winota when it actually counters the whole metagame, This is a list of interesting creatures it can counter : Thassas Oracle Dockside Tymna Thrassios Opposition Agent Kiki Jiki Seedborn muse Notion thief Dranith magistrate orchis bowmasters Grand abolisher Kinnan Dauthi Voidwalker hermit druid krrick Najeela Archon of emeria collector ouphe Derevi lavinia professional facebreaker ragavan saactum prelate Urza Sisay Malcom Chulane Zur the enchanter Rocco Glinthorn bucaneer kark-sakashima esper sentinel
Man I just love hearing all of your thoughts on each of the upcoming cards that might do well/poorly in cedh. Helps shed light on what to possibly expect.
Idk if it was mentioned in other comments, but @Cam you can just cast Spiteful Banditry for X = 0 as a 2 mana enchantment to get you incidental treasures over time without needing to wipe the board. Just a thought!
@@jasonkorf7700 I think a mono red board wipe with upside has potential. Something like Lotho is clearly better, but I'll give it a while before I say SB is unplayable.
Surprised not to gear Sauron thr Dark Lord talked about tbh. I know Grixis is crowded for great commanders but it seems like a pretty great midrange or control commander.
I was going to watch the podcast when I noticed that RUclips has a specific Podcast section! I always just find the episodes through the Video section. Never knew that.
The hand refueling is pertinent, but you can't loop it as easily as Sauron, LOTR as there aren't many GOOD ways to be tempted. I believe you are absolutely right in "regular" edh, but in cEDH none of those cut it compared to existing grixis shells.
I feel like people are evaluating Aragorn a little wrong. He isn't a Food Chain Commander, FC Commanders want to use FC to recast their Commander over and over for value. Aragorn doesn't want to be recast, he wants to sit on the battlefield. Aragorn is a Storm Commander that works with FC, but works with a lot of other things too. You can do Dockside loops like Blue Farm, recasting Dockside with Sabertooth or Curio or Lore Drakki+Bounce spell. You can Birgi+Grinning Ignus, or Aluren+ Ignus/Horned Kavu. You can more or less take any Storm list in the database and adapt it to Aragorn (other than Kenny), and while Aragorn isnt drawing you cards he is overclocking your Blue cantrips so your Brainstorm scrys 2 before drawing 3. Aragorn is a Storm deck, whether or not he's a good enoigh Storm deck we will have to wait and see. I think he could be fringe playable, but I've been wrong before.
I'm surprised to see the precon grixis Sauron, but no mention of the main set grixis Sauron. I know Ryan from Playing With Power had an eye on that one.
I feel like spiteful banditry would work in my Zurgo helmsmasher deck. Not only do you get treasure for opp. creatures blocking but you will grow Zurgo. Plus him having indestructible could let you wipe the board and still keep him around. I could be wrong though, I mostly play edh.
Does anyone agree that the other Sauron that lets you wheel whenever the ring tempts seems like it might make for a strong grixis control list? Considering building it but idk if thats the way to go with it
I’m not sure if this was stated in the video but the sac food ability on Sam wise returns the creature to hand and not play so you still need mana to recast.
It’s so funny to me that Mount Doom is good in Ob Nixilis for its second ability. But Ob Nixilis also loves when opponents play it for the first ability
In my playgroup we have a Fynn, the Fangbearer deck and it's 100% the reason I'm gonna be running Spiteful Banditry. I run a Prosper deck so putting 3 into the X isn't gonna be too much of a problem for me
I feel like people are sleeping on Stern Scolding. It counters all the key creatures in a meta that is growing to be creature heavy. I'm gonna be testing it, but I think not countering Winota and Tivit isn't enough of a downside for it. It hits so much.
Problem is that archers with "big shoulders - that cannot look up" will change the meta to less creatures :) On other hand Stern counter the Archers... :D Still problem is that is ONLY Creature counter, that have a lot limitation even on that part. Its not bad card, but i think its still worst then others 0 and 1 mana options and will not have "spot" in most of deck.
@@MareczqZglos I would definitely play scolding over miscast; and spellpierce, and very probably over suspend, I also believe spell snare has some place in the format if you can't afford some of the free counterspells (I know, proxies etc), because despite being one pip, it hits SO MANY relevant things.
@@MareczqZglos you are absolutely free not to. I feel these are highly meta dependent. Stern and spell snare are hard counter whose target, while theoretically restricted, includes all the relevant cards of the format except for a very few (like Winota or Kraum) that miscast or dispel already dont hit. Sure, stern doesn't counter adNaus, but it deals with abolisher or drannith, or Rocco, or dockside, or Tymna, or thrasios, or kinnan, or loads of others that you don't want to see on the battlefield. Sure, you could use removal, but in some case it won't be enough, like abolisher or dockside. I get this is similar to "is stiffle good enough for CEDH", and while stifle isnt good I've felt trickbind is just versatile enough to be worth it sometimes. Full disclosure, we don't allow proxies of cards we don't own in my community (I know), so I may be biased as we don't have grim monolith, mox Diamond, not everyone has FoW and FoN, etc.
Instead of "once per turn" they should think about using more "once during each upkeep" or even try "once during each main phase." Both of these use the word once so they won't go infinite but provide an avenue for power creep.
So you guys mentioned abzan-hulk in cEDH. Is that worth playing? Right now my only cEDH deck is a jeska/tymna D&T/Turbo deck but I’m tryna mix it up a bit, while still staying in my preferred lane
I keep seeing people mention that scolding hits kiki, but in the vast majority of games Kiki isn't being cast it's being cheated in from things like pod lines
I was wondering that as well. You'd think that any and every orzov or rakdos deck would want this. Anything with smothering tithe or dockside. Bats/treasure seems dumb good
Grand Abolisher isn't really needed unless you expect a lot of graveyard hate a better use for those 2 MV is Gingerbrute and Sylvan Safekeeper, that line gets you 5 total food and a food right away and only loses to 4+ pieces of gy hate and removal = to number of lands you have.
Is spiteful banditry not good in korvold? It helps cast korvold and turns into card draw later on. I guess it is a little slower than that deck is trying to go though.
oh god yes another BIG BIG cEDH podcast with the new SET from PLAY TO WIN i love these guyS! you should listen to them if you have not I love their podcast so so much WOW it gets better every week! i LOVE thassa's ORACLE i LOVE DOCKSIDE extortionist i LOVE MANA CRYPT good cards!! cant WAIT to play the new orcish bowmasters card! it seems really good! everything about it! WOW cen't wait for next week guys keep it up~!! cam dylan and tyler all together!!!! lord of the rings!
To be fair- Orcs hate sunlight, and therefore shooting upwards to the sky might be something they don't like to do as it would cause them to see some sunlight?
i need some lessons on how to be as enthusiastic as you guys you make all the cards actually sound fun Just a small comment to point out how absurd lotho is. If lotho makes 2 treasures in a rotation (not uncommon) and you cast 2 spells on your turn lotho would be the same as a dockside for 5 on your next turn (2 mana cast so both are +3) lotho is the most busted card in this set bar none imo great episode :)
“Hey Patreon member, what’s your favorite card?” *gives card* “0/5 for sure” 😂😂 genuinely my favorite part haha
Haha! Yeah, I thought that was brutal! 😂

HELL YEAH!
It's so funny to look back on how people reviewed One Ring now that it's taken over the format.
Tyler's Orc joke won the podcast. I know it wasn't a competition... but he won anyway 😂
What joke? Let me look it up
Looking at the list of archers, just the first page of Scryfall has archers that don't have reach.
In defense of the Orc Bois (Bowmasters), they don't block flying creatures.
They kill them.
Discounting changelings, 45 out of 98 archers in magic have reach. So it's more likely that an archer in magic DOES NOT have reach
Delighted Halfling is doing work in Rocco too... uncounterable Rocco gives you 2 uncounterable creatures right to the battlefield
Thank you guys for accurately assessing Display of Power. That card is a major trap and I've seen a lot of people online hyping it up, glad that y'all don't just judge cards by their ceilings!
Cam's "Hyuk, hyuk, hyuk!" Is half the reason I'm here
Note: Grand Abolisher does not protect WGD loops. The dragon can still be bounced or exiled once the first trigger has resolved and the animation aura's sacrifice trigger is on the stack.
Something I've noticed a lot of people overlooking with Aragorn, the Uniter is his high level of synergy with Painter's Servant.
@@thedoctor1471 I would not .
Not for nothing but Mind Over Matter and One Ring draws your whole deck.
Whenever Tyler's not on screen, all the other characters should be asking, "Where's Tyler?"
Instead of "once per turn" they should think about using more "once during each upkeep" or even try "once during each main phase." Both of these use the word once so they won't go infinite but provide an avenue for power creep.
earned a like just for that intro!!!!
fuck yes been waiting for this one
So you guys mentioned abzan-hulk in cEDH. Is that worth playing? Right now my only cEDH deck is a jeska/tymna D&T/Turbo deck but I’m tryna mix it up a bit, while still staying in my preferred lane
I keep seeing people mention that scolding hits kiki, but in the vast majority of games Kiki isn't being cast it's being cheated in from things like pod lines
is there a reason why Mirkwood bats wasnt listed? i feel like whenever you create or sac a token deal 1 damage to each opponent is very strong
I was wondering that as well. You'd think that any and every orzov or rakdos deck would want this. Anything with smothering tithe or dockside. Bats/treasure seems dumb good
I aspire to communicate my feelings as well as tyler
“Bowmaster doesn’t have reach” It sure has no problem killing Birds of Paradise.
I’m surprised you guys didn’t talk about “Last March of The Ents” for the Selvala/Marwin decks.
loving the omegamart shirt!!!
The once per turn treasure making enchantment will be very good with that other red enchantment rite of the raging storm
I love these videos! Have you ever considered making a best enchantress deck in cEDH video?
I kinda like display of power in my Naya minsc deck as a win con and protection piece.
Delighted halfling is now my pet card..... Gotta love cavern of souls on a stick
Magus of the cavern
Play mat is on the way! I can't wait!!
I feel mirkwood bats should have been at least looked at.
Notably this line protects against all the cheeky land effects that the abolisher pile is most scared of
No Samwise the Stouthearted? Goes in Ao for sure and saffi potentially?
your hair looks great Cam
For Dawnwaker, I cut offer you can refuse for stern scolding. I don't like giving people treasure and it can make them win
1 mana for 2 cards is a much better rate than 2 for 3.... Tyler is my spirit animal
Do you guys think the one ring will see play in mono blue decks with mind over matter as a 2 card combo?
Boramir is part of a strong 2 card infinite combo. Might slip into cEDH easily.
If youre playing the version of Tymna Jeska with Citadel, Magda, etc then Lotho is a powerhouse. I removed Smothering Tithe for him.
Don't sleep on the fact that Boromir + Ratadrabik + any blood artist effect (which there are 10+) are an infinite combo thats super easy to tutor up.
What about Éomer, King of Rohan for Winota? Kill a creature + big body + monarch seems pretty good for a human.
What about Gimli of the glittering caves? A dwarf that makes 2 treasures without Magda?
Tivit has switched over to the ring because it gains value over multiple turns at a lower initial investment
Will the episode be on Apple Podcasts soon?
Not talking about Borne Upon a wind? My zur heart mourns.
32:39 at this point I’m just curious about Cam’s high school English grades. :v
To be fair- Orcs hate sunlight, and therefore shooting upwards to the sky might be something they don't like to do as it would cause them to see some sunlight?
missed Borne and LQR (maybe wasnt leaked yet idk)
Woah, I just looked up Uruk-hai and then learned that they're taller than orc and shorter than human.
What about casting banditry where x = 0 just to have it on the field?
why arent there any good blue black vampire commanders? because you never see them in D-mirror.
Hey Dylan, which cards play best in Yisan for next week? 🧐🧐
i need some lessons on how to be as enthusiastic as you guys you make all the cards actually sound fun
Just a small comment to point out how absurd lotho is. If lotho makes 2 treasures in a rotation (not uncommon) and you cast 2 spells on your turn lotho would be the same as a dockside for 5 on your next turn (2 mana cast so both are +3)
lotho is the most busted card in this set bar none imo
great episode :)
32:32 Damn this made me snarf yo!
Laughed a lot, thanks!
The one ring in Mairsil is fun :)
