I tried my best to film a train there. I got a motel and spent 2 days waiting and nothing moved. It's 271 miles one way but I will return. That is on the very top of my list. I'm going to Cass, West Virginia in a couple weeks and then I am returning to West Brownsville and I won't leave until I film 2 trains there, no matter how many days it takes. I was disappointed but not as disappointed as last fall when I tried to film a train going through Natural Tunnel, Virginia. 3 days with 2 nights in a motel and only 2 trains went through and both were at night and there wasn't any light to film them. West Brownsville Pa. has street lights so I can at least film one there. The people in the town were nice also. A couple of them knew who I was. Lol

After 20 years of being out of the volunteer fire service. When I heard fire house sires going off, my adrenaline still gets pumping. What a rush. Jay Township Elk County, Pennsylvania sire is still in use and many of the fire companies in Pennsylvania are still in use. Thank you for sharing.
I wish we still had them in use where I live but we have none in use in Southeast Ohio. I use to be able to hear 4 of them from my home in Goshen, Ohio when I was a volunteer. That was one of the most exciting things about being a firefighter back in the day. That and riding on the tailboard flying over railroad crossings. lol
I can only imagine how much relief the caller feels when they hear that siren wind up knowing help is soon to be on the way I have vague memories of my departments house siren going off everyday at noon and for every call I’m now a member of New Haven Volunteer Fire Rescue here in Upstate New York and I’ve been a member fir a few years now and I love every single second of it I wanted to join to give back to a community that’s giving so much to me

My town stopped using the sirens in 2010 and all but two were removed. They had switched to just pagers and text messages. In 2017, when someone had passed away, they blew the sirens as a final farewell to the guy. Amazingly, one flick of the switch and both roared to life. A glorious final blow out to a good guy.
Thanks for posting, I use to be with a department in Riverdale Maryland back in the 70's and we had a siren. It would sound one long blast for an ambulance call, and three blast for a fire call. I would hustle on my bike to the station hoping to at least get a position on the back step if the buckets were filled. Great old days lost to time but memories will live.
Very cool! That was when I was on Goshen Fire Dept in Ohio. I liked the tailboard the most and besides, the senior firemen usually took all the seats in the trucks to play with the sirens and radios. lol

I remember that siren. I heard it go off once when I was spending the night at a friend's house when he was still living in West Brownsville with his dad.
I live 3 houses away from the VFD in my town. Most of the time when it sounds late at night it wakes me up as it's very loud. If it doesn't, my dog howling like crazy in the living room finishes the job every time.
It depends on where you go, but fire whistles are still really common on the east coast. Lots of them in PA, VA, DE etc. I’m from kansas and while the majority of departments including my own don’t use them anymore, there are still quite a few in kansas and Nebraska that do including the town I work in. It’s a good backup as it is easy to leave the house and forget the pager. Also warns the town to look out for firemen responding.

Our department stopped using the siren in the mid 2000's because the pagers went to digital and many new residents complained..so it was removed from the pole behind the station. I actually have the hood/ cover and it looks like a dome.... gonna convert it to a BBQ/ smoker for the patio at the station.

I'm not sure. But years ago the fire whistle was a series of horn blasts depending on the pattern of the horn blast it would tell you what street it was on

Brian, this is a Federal Signal Model 5. 12 port. The signal, just as NECRailfan505 said, is attack, which is used most of the time for fires or severe thunderstorm warnings. During World War II and the Cold War, Attack was used for Civil Defense.
My home town still uses the house siren for fire calls too! Actually they use both the towns sirens for both fire calls and tornado warnings and also set them off for one long blast every day at noon
In my county in VA, the local storm sirens double as alert sirens for the VFD's. In my town specifically they only sound the siren between 6 AM and 8 PM out of respect for the residents, but during the day that, pagers, radios and text alerts all work together to alert the departments if there is a call. Anything that's not a medical run, the sirens get sounded.
I remember as a kid, the station down the street from my parents' house used one of these to call the volunteers. Many years later (during pager days, pre-cell phone) I volunteered out of that same station, sometimes working overnight on the rescue squad. Thanks for the memories!

When the U.S. Weather Bureau made its report of the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak in the great lakes states, they recommended that civil defense sirens that were installed to summon firemen & warn of enemy attack be used to warn of tornadoes. Civil defense sirens had been used to warn of tornadoes in " tornado alley " states for a few years & had been found to be effective.
We still use air horns 145dB in Sweden for part time and voluntary fire stations. Some only normally daytime, but all personnel have digital pagers and SMS-call also. We use alternating two-tone to gather personell and can also give other signals for call all for "total alarm" when not in duty or when paging isn't working. Also for alerting people on "Important Message to the Public" with 7 seconds on and 14 off for 2 minutes, to go indoors and listen to broadcasts and SMS. Used for severe threats and accidents or civil defense actions. But this one you showed is sounding more lovely! I wish I can get a Chrysler-Bell Victory, Firepower Hemi powered, Air-Raid Siren and put it on a tower at my home to call my kids up to 40 miles away! :D Thank for this post, Brian! where i live in North Dakota we have a house siren at our local volunteer fire department and it goes off whenever EMS or the fire department has to respond to a crash outside of town
Lemoore fire we have the same siren, but it only goes off during structure fires or gas leaks or hazardous material. We have the siren and we have our pages. I’ve been with the department 33 years firefighter EMT.
I like the last round - short round. Thats what was originally specified by Federal. My department had the same thing. A short quick wind up and down - then 5 long cycles and then a short at the end to signify it was the last round. My department has 4 sirens. One on each station and 2 pole sirens to expand coverage. When the whether is right and you can hear all 4 it sounds amazing !
Reminds me of the old movie testament that came out in the 80's where they were nuked by a missle & most survivors fell sick and passed away from the radiation that contaminated food, water agriculture & the ground. But this video is neat! I use a siren app on my phone for alarms & notifications. The only alarms that will wake me up! Lol. I will add this to my sound recorder as well! Thanks for sharing! 😃
My fire department still activates our fire siren. It is located behind the fire hall and is used for all calls except for EMS because they have their own station. We have an STH-10 and house 6 units that are in service. The station is located in Dansville, NY.

As a volunteer firefighter I believe we still use our house siren if nobody is at the station but if people are we normally use our pagers but normally we have 4 guys on crew but if nobody’s there the house siren will go off to alert us if we aren’t there or we are at our training grounds which I’m surprised some stations in Pennsylvania still use house sirens nowadays I’ve been with my department for about 3 months now it’s a pretty fun job to have but scary at the same time but makes life more interesting
I enjoyed it. I use to sleep in my clothes so that I could get to the fire house faster. Lol. I have been on all kinds of runs including a small airplane crash with 2 people in it
My department was supposed to but up our new siren but never did, and someone complained that there wasn't a sirent in town, so they hooked up the old one we used to have, but they rarely sound it, which it should go off evrytime the put a page out. At least I would think

In Baltimore County, Md there are quite a few volunteer companies that still use the " house siren" to alert members to calls. In other counties in Md " house sirens" are also used . I am glad that those sirens are still active for the members that don't have pagers.
Watching this I seem to remember fire sirens and whistles from various places where I lived during the late 40s and during the 50s. Sometimes they'd sound off in patterns to indicate where the fire was.

Smitty SF-3751 Back when, in the late 50's and early 60's. in Saint James, Long Island, New York. Being a volunteer fireman, I was taught how to drive a standard shift, never new a transmission could make such awful noises and two guys had to go to the dentist, but it was fun for an 18 year old. Was also on the racing team.
I remember growing up my towns two firehouses would horns that would blast and you’d hear them all over town. I haven’t heard them in years now. They must have been replaced with something like pagers or phone notification apps. That being said, sirens like this one to me are scarier than horns. They remind me of air raid sirens.
I remember one day years ago in the hamlet I used to live in. Was making a purchase at the equipment to store which was beside the Quonset that houses their fire department. Literally in the middle of the transaction and in the equipment shop the all call started blaring and all but the shop cat and one of the wives dropped everything they were doing and ran to the fire hall. It happened so fast that I was still standing there with the cash in hand to make the purchase. I called out tentatively and the misses came up to finish the purchase. Not even 2 minutes later. All three fire vehicles and the bush truck as well as the ambulance came flying out of the Quonset. Years later they have a new and proper fire hall for themselves but I got to see them responding to an all call again. And it was still everybody that worked in that equipment shop. So now that they are several blocks away. They have a passenger Ford Transit that everybody piles into.
I lived in Auburn Hills, Mi from 1985-1990. Auburn Hills had a volunteer fire department, too. They used the siren for fires and also on Halloween, they used to siren to signify the starting and stopping of Trick or Treating. Nowadays, they have a paid fire dept. I’m not sure if the siren is still in use and if so, might be for tornado warnings or high wind warnings. Sorry to hear that you weren’t able to film a train.
Thanks, yeah, this was one that I really wanted to film. I will return. The street running section is 6 tenths of a mile long. I gotta get a train here. I know Norfolk Southern still runs coal trains through here.
My grandparents lived next to a firehouse in Rifton NY. and the fire siren would go off at 12:00 seven days a week. Once when we stayed with them when I was growing up the siren went off and it scared me. My grandmother closed the window. And another time it went off ay 7:30 in the morning for a fire somewhere. It doesn't go off anymore

I think he lives across the road from the station. He lives in an awesome spot! He has the street running railroad in front of his house and the fire station behind his home. I would be in heaven! I was wondering what would happen if they had a structure fire or something that required more personnel. Hopefully more volunteers would show up. Back when I was a volunteer, we had 2 runs at the same time. Only one of us was 18 and the rest of us just high school kids. The 18 year old drove the fire truck with another cadet to a car fire while my brother, another cadet and myself took a couple 5 gallon Indian water tanks and a broom to fight a field fire. Another fire dept was also called to help cover for us. The good ole days
Jaw Tooth The thing is, SNL has always political humor, but it used to be all in fun, and they made fun of whoever was in office and everyone was fair game. Today the skits do nothing but put down conservatives, and it mean spirited and not funny. I haven’t watched SNL in years.
Pretty cool Jawtooth! I like old air raid and tornado sirens. Gotta love nostalgia. I wish I had the time to railfan. Theres probably so many cool spots that I don't even know about. I spent a few days at Natural Tunnel a couple years back and every time I would hear one come on the radio, I'd try to get down to the tunnel but would miss it. And the time I spent down at the bottom there were no trains. However the Tunnel lighting at night was really cool to see. I'd love to engineer or conduct trains through Appalachia. I could never figure out how you get those jobs.
I had a lot of bad luck at Natural Tunnel for some reason. A few years ago a train was coming through the tunnel with 3 Heritage units leading it. Right when the engines came out of the tunnel, my camera froze up. Last year when I returned I spent 3 days trying to film a train there and only 2 went by and they were both at night. That is the only location that I think I will give up on. I will return to West Brownsville and try to get a train there.
Wish we had those sirens here in Perth, Western Australia, they would make people more aware of emergencies. We have a radio alert, but that only helps if the radio is on. TV’s do not have the alert, except for news alerts. If I am listening to Foxtel I am even more blind to emergencies.
I live in Red Lion, PA. They still use ours. Reminds me of Silent Hill. They use the same sound before everything turns to crap. Always look out the window to see if Pyramidhead is walking down the street.
That scares me because if there was a raid I would sleep through it…our fire sirens for volunteers sounds so similar. I lived near the fire hall so I got used to it 🤣😭

When I was about 14 the fire department came to the school and explained how they would count the long blasts and short blasts and that would tell the fire personnel in town what they were responding for. They gave us a cheat sheet so we could listen and count it in class. That was the days when there were still pay phones on the corner and no one had cell phones. Circa 1987 Williamsburg, Ohio. Now text messages have replaced all the sirens except the weather siren in town.
I knew a police officer in Williamsburg back in the 80s. His name was Greg Lang. I was on Goshen Fire Department with him in the late 70s. Do you know him? Williamsburg was a cool little town back then to watch trains in and I remember it had a wig wag signal at the Main Street crossing (SR 276)

Here in Bishop, CA, the siren (actually five strategically around town) goes off every day at Noon and on every single page. Only complaints are when it DOESN'T go off!

Your town made a big mistake getting rid of your fire station's sirens. It shoukd be reinstated OUT OF NECESSITY!!!!!

Our town has this siren as well, a Model 5. They don’t use it anymore; instead, they replaced it with a Whelen WPS 2805

Fire department sirens are long into the past where I live Josh Burger but I do remember them way long ago when I was a juvenile

The stl 10 and Sth-10 I hear all the time for fires, now only the stl goes off the Sth-10 does weather warnings only

Trexlertown Fire Company uses their STH-10 for fire calls. However, it's locked out from going off during overnight hours.

@@JawTooth they still use the siren on calls. While the radios is still the main use the siren still goes as well.
Music to my ears... can't remember how many times growing up jumping into the pick-up with my Dad racing to the firehouse he served 57 years ....I'm in my 40th now.

When the U.S. Weather Bureau made its report of the 1965 Palm Sunday tornado outbreak in the great lakes states, they recommended that civil defense sirens that were installed to summon firemen & warn of enemy attack be used to warn of tornadoes. Civil defense sirens had been used to warn of tornadoes in " tornado alley " states for a few years & had been found to be effective.
We still use air horns 145dB in Sweden for part time and voluntary fire stations. Some only normally daytime, but all personnel have digital pagers and SMS-call also. We use alternating two-tone to gather personell and can also give other signals for call all for "total alarm" when not in duty or when paging isn't working. Also for alerting people on "Important Message to the Public" with 7 seconds on and 14 off for 2 minutes, to go indoors and listen to broadcasts and SMS. Used for severe threats and accidents or civil defense actions.
But this one you showed is sounding more lovely! I wish I can get a Chrysler-Bell Victory, Firepower Hemi powered, Air-Raid Siren and put it on a tower at my home to call my kids up to 40 miles away! :D Thank for this post, Brian! (and a great 5th of July! LOL)

where i live in North Dakota we have a house siren at our local volunteer fire department and it goes off whenever EMS or the fire department has to respond to a crash outside of town

Lemoore fire we have the same siren, but it only goes off during structure fires or gas leaks or hazardous material. We have the siren and we have our pages. I’ve been with the department 33 years firefighter EMT.
I like the last round - short round. Thats what was originally specified by Federal. My department had the same thing. A short quick wind up and down - then 5 long cycles and then a short at the end to signify it was the last round. My department has 4 sirens. One on each station and 2 pole sirens to expand coverage. When the whether is right and you can hear all 4 it sounds amazing !
These types of sirens are awesome in tornado situations. Wish my fire companies in my town would use them

Reminds me of the old movie testament that came out in the 80's where they were nuked by a missle & most survivors fell sick and passed away from the radiation that contaminated food, water agriculture & the ground. But this video is neat! I use a siren app on my phone for alarms & notifications. The only alarms that will wake me up! Lol. I will add this to my sound recorder as well! Thanks for sharing! 😃

My fire department still activates our fire siren. It is located behind the fire hall and is used for all calls except for EMS because they have their own station. We have an STH-10 and house 6 units that are in service. The station is located in Dansville, NY.

As a volunteer firefighter I believe we still use our house siren if nobody is at the station but if people are we normally use our pagers but normally we have 4 guys on crew but if nobody’s there the house siren will go off to alert us if we aren’t there or we are at our training grounds which I’m surprised some stations in Pennsylvania still use house sirens nowadays I’ve been with my department for about 3 months now it’s a pretty fun job to have but scary at the same time but makes life more interesting
I enjoyed it. I use to sleep in my clothes so that I could get to the fire house faster. Lol. I have been on all kinds of runs including a small airplane crash with 2 people in it
My department was supposed to but up our new siren but never did, and someone complained that there wasn't a sirent in town, so they hooked up the old one we used to have, but they rarely sound it, which it should go off evrytime the put a page out. At least I would think

My little town in Northeast Ohio still uses fire sirens we have three of them in town one at the station another at the west end of town and north end of town

In Baltimore County, Md there are quite a few volunteer companies that still use the " house siren" to alert members to calls. In other counties in Md " house sirens" are also used . I am glad that those sirens are still active for the members that don't have pagers.
I'm kind of surprised that so many departments still use the house siren for calls. There are none left in my area

Watching this I seem to remember fire sirens and whistles from various places where I lived during the late 40s and during the 50s. Sometimes they'd sound off in patterns to indicate where the fire was.
Wow, that is cool! I did not know that they did that. Someone else said in there town they made one rotation for EMS and 3 rotations for fire runs

Federal Sign & Signal Model 5. That signal is called attack, and most of the time used for fires or severe thunderstorm warnings. When WW2 and The Cold War was happening, this was used as an air raid signal.
I also must point out that in 2:51 in you're maysville video there was a Siren.

Back when, in the late 50's and early 60's. in Saint James, Long Island, New York. Being a volunteer fireman, I was taught how to drive a standard shift, never new a transmission could make such awful noises and two guys had to go to the dentist, but it was fun for an 18 year old. Was also on the racing team.
Have friends that live in West Brownsville, Pennsylvania. About a 15 minute drive from where I live in Fayette County.

I remember growing up my towns two firehouses would horns that would blast and you’d hear them all over town. I haven’t heard them in years now. They must have been replaced with something like pagers or phone notification apps.
That being said, sirens like this one to me are scarier than horns. They remind me of air raid sirens.
I remember one day years ago in the hamlet I used to live in. Was making a purchase at the equipment to store which was beside the Quonset that houses their fire department. Literally in the middle of the transaction and in the equipment shop the all call started blaring and all but the shop cat and one of the wives dropped everything they were doing and ran to the fire hall. It happened so fast that I was still standing there with the cash in hand to make the purchase. I called out tentatively and the misses came up to finish the purchase. Not even 2 minutes later. All three fire vehicles and the bush truck as well as the ambulance came flying out of the Quonset.
Years later they have a new and proper fire hall for themselves but I got to see them responding to an all call again. And it was still everybody that worked in that equipment shop. So now that they are several blocks away. They have a passenger Ford Transit that everybody piles into.

I lived in Auburn Hills, Mi from 1985-1990. Auburn Hills had a volunteer fire department, too. They used the siren for fires and also on Halloween, they used to siren to signify the starting and stopping of Trick or Treating. Nowadays, they have a paid fire dept. I’m not sure if the siren is still in use and if so, might be for tornado warnings or high wind warnings. Sorry to hear that you weren’t able to film a train.
Thanks, yeah, this was one that I really wanted to film. I will return. The street running section is 6 tenths of a mile long. I gotta get a train here. I know Norfolk Southern still runs coal trains through here.

My grandparents lived next to a firehouse in Rifton NY. and the fire siren would go off at 12:00 seven days a week. Once when we stayed with them when I was growing up the siren went off and it scared me. My grandmother closed the window. And another time it went off ay 7:30 in the morning for a fire somewhere. It doesn't go off anymore

I think he lives across the road from the station. He lives in an awesome spot! He has the street running railroad in front of his house and the fire station behind his home. I would be in heaven! I was wondering what would happen if they had a structure fire or something that required more personnel. Hopefully more volunteers would show up. Back when I was a volunteer, we had 2 runs at the same time. Only one of us was 18 and the rest of us just high school kids. The 18 year old drove the fire truck with another cadet to a car fire while my brother, another cadet and myself took a couple 5 gallon Indian water tanks and a broom to fight a field fire. Another fire dept was also called to help cover for us. The good ole days

Jaw Tooth The thing is, SNL has always political humor, but it used to be all in fun, and they made fun of whoever was in office and everyone was fair game. Today the skits do nothing but put down conservatives, and it mean spirited and not funny. I haven’t watched SNL in years.
Town I live in has one. Goes off every night at 10:30 for curfew. Can be really haunting to hear on a foggy night.
Pretty cool Jawtooth! I like old air raid and tornado sirens. Gotta love nostalgia. I wish I had the time to railfan. Theres probably so many cool spots that I don't even know about. I spent a few days at Natural Tunnel a couple years back and every time I would hear one come on the radio, I'd try to get down to the tunnel but would miss it. And the time I spent down at the bottom there were no trains. However the Tunnel lighting at night was really cool to see. I'd love to engineer or conduct trains through Appalachia. I could never figure out how you get those jobs.
I had a lot of bad luck at Natural Tunnel for some reason. A few years ago a train was coming through the tunnel with 3 Heritage units leading it. Right when the engines came out of the tunnel, my camera froze up. Last year when I returned I spent 3 days trying to film a train there and only 2 went by and they were both at night. That is the only location that I think I will give up on. I will return to West Brownsville and try to get a train there.
They still have one in opperation here in Ladysmith WI! I can hear it at my house 2 miles away

Wish we had those sirens here in Perth, Western Australia, they would make people more aware of emergencies. We have a radio alert, but that only helps if the radio is on. TV’s do not have the alert, except for news alerts. If I am listening to Foxtel I am even more blind to emergencies.
I live in Red Lion, PA. They still use ours. Reminds me of Silent Hill. They use the same sound before everything turns to crap. Always look out the window to see if Pyramidhead is walking down the street.

That’s the same one located at Laurence Harbor Fire Company. Aka they have the same siren as the one in this video except it’s a Model 7A.
When I was about 14 the fire department came to the school and explained how they would count the long blasts and short blasts and that would tell the fire personnel in town what they were responding for. They gave us a cheat sheet so we could listen and count it in class. That was the days when there were still pay phones on the corner and no one had cell phones. Circa 1987 Williamsburg, Ohio. Now text messages have replaced all the sirens except the weather siren in town.
I knew a police officer in Williamsburg back in the 80s. His name was Greg Lang. I was on Goshen Fire Department with him in the late 70s. Do you know him? Williamsburg was a cool little town back then to watch trains in and I remember it had a wig wag signal at the Main Street crossing (SR 276)

Here in Bishop, CA, the siren (actually five strategically around town) goes off every day at Noon and on every single page. Only complaints are when it DOESN'T go off!
