Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
The FAMAS was originally designed for iron sights only, as it predates the trend of issuing optics on standard infantry rifles (the marksman's rifle at the time of its development was the FR-F1). However, adaptations were made to mount optics, primarily the PGMP updated handguard, which locked more-or-less securely onto the barrel (the original handguard had no need to fit precisely) and had a proprietary mounting rail. While a variety of different optics saw field use (including EOTech and Aimpoint), the official issued scope was the Scrome J4.
The J4 is a pretty simple 4x scope, with 5 settings of reticle illumination. It was used on both he FAMAS and the Minimi, with a BDC reticle that is zeroed at 300m with chevron aiming points for 400, 500, and 600m. A small run of civilian sale examples was made; these have a mildot and crosshair reticle.
Doctrinally, the J4 was not so much a shooting aid, but a tool for observation, target identification, and fire coordination. It was issued to fire team leaders on the FAMAS. Today, these scopes are extremely rare in civilian hands (both in France and the US), as very few civilian examples were sold, and even fewer military ones got out into the collector's market.

As a Frenchman I feel that our national arms industrie exists only to make this man happy and I am glad about it!
I dont know, it rather feels like this man only exist to make feel the french army relevant :P

Oui!
@@MandoWookie yeah, kinda sad that they just use HK stuff now. Some of their domestic designs are kinda neat.
Yes, yes it does . Lol
It's nice seeing Ian be such a happy Oui-aboo
That's going right in my collection of weeaboo derivatives.
Haven’t heard that one before that’s very clever 😂
Bien trouvé!👍
I hate it so much. Take my like.
aka "francaboo." "Oui-aboo" is just too perfect! Ever notice how gun enthusiasts tend to also be some type of "aboo?" Brandon Herrera is a slavaboo (like me).
How much mechanical bore offset do want? Ian: “Oui.”
So this was a project Scrome was like: "Sure we can do that."
Then turned around to find the first local uni student in the building and told them to make it for their first year project cause it was a simple thing.
However unlike many other companies they did make sure to support said student well enough to have a good enough product by the end of it.
Theres a reason they found a student to do it, the older staff were likely either on strike, rioting or having a long lunch. France has a long history of its workforce doing anything except working, especially if someone even slightly suggests they need to work even half as hard as the neighbouring countries.
"Reasonably mostly sorta effective" interesting description there Ian

Congratulations on your new acquisition. As a true fan of French firearms you got the perfect accessory for one of your favorite rifles.
Sights on the FAMAS. Aim for the head, hit them in the pelvis.
For those wondering,
his morale patch is from WoodPatch and says "Draw me like one of your French girls"
Didn't notice it the first time around, saw someone point it out on Twitter, and had to come back to see it with my own eyes. It's real, and oh, so based.
*(internal screaming)*
Yeah, Ian is now interesting...
It's called a "Fire Team ". Last time we were in Paris there I saw a bunch of legionnaires all over town. Most of the guys had Eotechs on their FAMASes.
You see the REP (Regiment Étranger Parachutiste) Légionnaires at main railway stations in Paris all the time. Yes, the French police their transport links with their version of the Paras/82nd Airborne.
@@NotALot-xm6gz that's mostly because of the terror attacks climate that's been in place since about 2015, they patrol stations, airports, museums, religious buildings and general downtown areas
Legionnaires use HK416 for years now...
@@NotALot-xm6gz 2REP is based in Calvi, Corisa... at 1000 kilometers away from Paris. So no, you will not see "Legionnaires in paris all the time", you will see all French military units in all major french cities, including Legionaires, who are only a fraction of the french militaries units... And no, the french "do not police their transports" : The Sentinelle mission, and before it, the Vigipirate mission, are anti-terrorism mission... not police one.
Were they using the latest generation of Felin-type FAMASes?
I really do enjoy the FAMAS content. It's obviously a passion project for you.
"Hey bro I heard you like height-over-bore"
In all seriousness, it's wonderful seeing Ian accessorize one of his favorite guns. Bon travail!
Ian, I’ve always been curious about the history and implementation of Pickatiny rails. It would be wonderful to see you make a video on just that topic! Great video as always! Have a pleasant weekend 😊
Small Arms Solutions has a great video about the history of the 1913 rail and why it should be called the Swan rail… he knew the guy responsible.

An exquisite choice of morale patches if I may
@uspavani_puh watching at 720p (highest available at this time) I could not make it out.
I ***think*** it might have been Rei Ayanami?
French firearms, to me, is the embodiment of the saying "don't judge a book by its cover" in gun form. A FAMAS with that Scrome optic goes against contemporary ergonomics, but it looks and feels like it just works.
I just hope that there will be readily available FAMAS reproductions in the future, because this design is worth preserving.
I went with a Primary Arms 3x Micro Prism on my T97 w/carry handle.
Feels great, looks like a BR from Halo 😛
That 3x microprism is the BOMB!
I put the same on my VHS-2. It’s almost perfect.
@@Pavia1525 Yeah, I have one on my X95.
The most important part
Ian's wife should be rightfully jealous of how lovingly he treats this FAMAS.
Ian + Famas = pure gold
You can tell when Ian is truly happy vs just being professional. Personally don't understand his Francophile obsessions but it warms my heart nonetheless.
I can't judge. I myself am a Russophile for military equipment.
@@supremeghost7950 we still have some good ones
"The French copy no one."
"And nobody copies the French."
Fairly certain the French copied the American armored unit structure after WW2 and kept it in some form even after we ditched it.
No one copies the French, what statement could be more false?
The ranks in the armies of the whole world are of French origin, the bayonet, the powder meaning smoke, the first tanks with modern design, the first flight of an airplane in 1890 the structure of the armies (platoon, squadron, battalion, regiment etc., etc)
The use of uniforms.
First battleship (frigate La Gloire 1859) Invention of the modern submarine. Would you like more?

The editing in this one is fantastic
Ian gets a +10 stats boost when making French content. His video from the Eiffel Tower will be in IMAX.

it would be awesome if 9-Hole Reviews puts through practical accuracy and speedway!!
Ian, if you know anyone at PSA you should tell them to bring the FAMAS into their new battlefield line of firearms. I'd buy one in a heartbeat.
Yes!
“Reasonably, mostly, sort of, effective, actually.” This line is gold.
i hope i find someday somebody that loves me as much as ian loves the famas
"Draw me like one of your french girls" from Woodpatch spotted. Truly a man of the people.
Just the growth of this channel is absolutely amazing and I'm happy to be alive at the same time this man walks this earth.
It would be interesting to see this weapon run thru the Practical Accuracy course by 9-Hole Review. Wonder how the FAMMAS would score?
⬆️this
They gotta do it!
Been in love with FAMAS ever since i first saw it in Metal Gear Solid. Beautiful rifle!
556rs with pineapples
I vaguely recall hearing something about how the main reason the FAMAS was used in Metal Gear is because the shape made it very easy to implement into a PS1 era game (graphics wise).
@@lemonlefleur6236 yep. same reason for the socom pistol
Some days I get the impression that Ian is a Frenchman who got born in the US by mistake but then I realize that no, it wasn't a mistake because had he been born in France he would not be the Ian we are all here to watch...
Looking forward to the next video :-)
We, french citizen, cannot buy FAMAS... What a shame 😅. One of the greatest gun Channel on youtube btw 👍.
I might disagree with you on your opinion that NATO is evil, but I do agree y’all should be able to own the same small arms as your military and other militaries.
@@bigredwolf6 👍 ( i make the difference between the governement of a country and his foreign policy, and the people that live in that country, so i don't think american people are evil)

Getting sassy with the algorithm inserting that mag in the intro… kudos, good sir 👍🏻👍🏻
That was a really, really cool opening!
Nice intro sequence putting out your love of French firearms.
One of the best FW intros ever
For a second I thought I was watching Administrative Results!
I dunno why, but a big feeling of jealousy rushes over me whenever I see someone who owns a Famas.. I'm not even a fan of bullpups or even French weapons, but it always interested me and I want one.
That camo looks effective in the sandy waste
The French Ministry of Defence should really give an export licence to Ian so he can have a "FAMAS valorisé" (= improved) with a lowered rail, like here ruclips.net/video/oVC6_9pc0_Q/видео.html so he can have a real cheek weld while shooting with optics. I think in Bourges, the 4 prototypes of the FAMAS that were never put in production can be seen at the Army Ordonance Museum.
Actually, the sticking point is a US import permit.
@@ForgottenWeapons Do you plan a visit to the Museum fore mentionned? I think you should be able to make a score of interresting videos.
@@ForgottenWeapons Surely you could shame ATF into letting you import a french gun?
... again?
I love that someone in Ian's production staff, maybe Ian himself, went to the trouble to accurately translate "More French Music" into French for the captions. The production values on this channel... "Chef's Kiss".
Thanks Ian for showing off that gem. Served me well in combat, excellent scope! Amazing to see one is such good condition. In 10 years, never seen one that ne not beaten up haha!
It's always a pleasure to see you presenting a french weapon. Thank you ! Definitly, you are the most French American on RUclips ! Vive Forgotten Weapons !
Just having that thing on your FAMAS really turns into marksman rifle with bipod, plus it might look weird. That gun is basically popular without optics nor attachments
I looked into those scopes a year ago and I wish to own a Famas and one.
As an ex-Legionairre, 2REP, no one needs scope on a FAMAS. If you can't get a 3-shot triangle at 300 - you shouldn't play with it. If you shoot it at 400m aim for their heads and you will hit their stomachs the drop off is incredible and as for windage..
Well sight radius for iron sights is short so accuracy is going to suffer at range so a scope is needed
That front screw is to retain the frontal accessory mount (PIRAT), not hold the steel insert in the top cover 😉
The CC captions at the start are the icing on the cake
Very cool Ian, I'm glad you were able to get the scope you wanted for your rifle. :) Looks like it does very well for you!
I know I should be focusing on the optics but the tricolour patch with the lass on it keep piquing my interest
Ian, I really admire the passion that you have for your work!
Now, go back to practicing singing “La Marseillaise”.
“Allons, enfants de la Patrie,
Le jour de gloire est arrivé !
Contre nous de la tyrannie
L'étendard sanglant est levé”
Merci pour cette honneur et hommage que tu nous fait 👍
The Forgotten Weapon reppin a Woodpatch patch, my man
"Reasonably mostly sort of effective" well I'm sold
Probably the happiest Ian we've seen...
This is excellent for a squad leader. The bore offset is just about enough to give the squad leader an overhead view of the objective. :P
I must admit when Ian says he found a "unicorn" something I am not that surprised anymore lol his whole channel is mostly about unicorn finds - and thats cool
your love for french weaponry is heart warming (frenchman here) just sad we don't really have any more manufacturers
That’s the most extreme height-over-bore example I have ever seen 😂
This is very cool, as we don't usually see Ian doing a video about some scope outside of sniper scope(which is a very modern concept, when rifleman also has scope)
Holy Height over bore, Batman!
If I want to know how a firearm works, I look through this channel and my mind expands.
Refreshing to see a gun shooting montage without overly-serious music overlaid on top of it.
Love the left hand eject, action Ian!
I have always liked the looks of the FAMAS
Love the WoodPatchs morale patch one of my favorites. Another fantastic video too.
Only the French military would name an NCO after a truly skilled cook
That is a freaking very high over bore mounted scope. I thought the Tavor had a high over bore scope distance but this is extreme!
Very informative subtitles to start the video
Every time Ian shoots a famas, an angel gets its wings
Ah, relaxing opening.
Very interesting optic, i didnt know about it!
Looking at the specifications on the website, it has the magnification of a Ta31 Acog, the eye relief and field of view of a Ta11 acog, and the weight of a TA02 LED. Seems like a very effective optic.
In conclusion
L’acog.
Famous FAMAS 👍💨
Congratulations Ian. AFAIK, that makes the two of us with a Scrome J4 in the US. If I come across an Aim 2000 I’ll message you. Edit to you have the offset rail for the PGMP for the Pirat?
Congrats! It's a very small club. :) I do have the offset rail, but no laser for it (yet?).
@Forgotten Weapons there's one in Bulgaria but he wants an arm and a leg. I haven't seen a real pirat. But the ITL aim 2000 is Identical. If I see one, I'll PM you. You gotta have it to be 100% Afghanistan Mali setup. JB
@Forgotten Weapons I ordered my Scrome 2013 direct from them, but I have a mil dot on mine. I think they were clearing their stock as they are very small company. Cheers. Cool you got the Christmas tree reticle.
I miss the famas i know it was replaced for a reason but there is something French about this gun
Something like it being French
Now I need to see Ian's morale patch collection
Some FAMAS bayonet drills would be nice...or a session of ice in it's three groove bore not obstructing a bullet as the French claimed.
I am so happy that Ian is making video on his beloved rifle
Ian crawling around in the desert
not show Ian spending 2 hours removing cactus needles from everywhere.
Amazing patch lmao, WoodPatch makes some good stuff. Great video.
That looks like a quirky gun to shoot but I really like it.
Man do I love when he breaks out the famas
Loved the intro!!
"Reasonably effective actually " Nice one, Ian. :)
Scrome does no sell this scope on a regular basis. And when they do, suggested retail price is around 3k. For such basic hardware, you have to reeaaaaally want one.
‘Reasonably, mostly, sort of effective, actually’- the best kind of effective!
I'm imagining Ian as part of a French special forces unit going into Chad, Côte d'Ivoire or some other former French colony to take part in a coup. Of course he'll have his trusty scoped FAMAS to deal with any threats from local militias.
Love the change of pace opening
why do i get the feeling this would have been better with an edith piaf soundtrack?
je crois que je suis trop francais lol
merci le telechargement , Ian.
its hard not to love the FAMAS being an MGS fan lol. Gotta love the SOCOM, FAMAS, and the M1911A1 with the extended barrel (and all the other upgrades)
We also had CompM4 optics on F1s if I recall correctly
I appreciate how French that opening was... Could have used a little B/W though, and perhaps Ian randomly taking a break from shooting to smoke and recite existential crisis poetry?
love this weapon, hard to find ( at descent price ) in France.
