I arrived here after reading comments on a Squirrel Nut Zippers' video. Ben makes a cameo at the end of "The Suits Are Picking Up the Bill." I'm not well versed in music terminology, but the transition from an alternative rock beat to a jazz beat is a cool touch.
I was celebrating my 21st birthday at Cat’s Cradle third week of January 1995. I was drunk by the 1/3rd through the show when the first lines rang out. I yelled out ‘who the fuck are you!’ Everyone and the band started cracking up hysterically.
What makes this song for me is the 3/4 jazz section at the end. I wish more of his music was like that. I remember this back when I was a 90s teen and enjoyed but mainly for the final 32 bars ;)
Bought a used copy of the CD with the live version on it. THAT'S the song of the CD. I played it about 50 times in a row. The great Jazz bit at the end reminds me of Peanuts, so I imagined a goth version of the Peanuts characters dance. I wasn't expecting a western saloon. I was expecting to see a goth club.
Very cute video. It's really weird that these guys were popular when my band instructor was in high school. Now he gets to hear me and my friends talk about Ben Folds and Ben Folds Five! He's surprised that people still know of them.
My oh my, I remember hearing/seeing this for the first time here in the UK on The Chart Show on a Saturday morning and loving it immediately. Lovely Stuff! 8-)
Nothing beats singing "It's industrial!" in falsetto to a funky beat! LMAO! I just played this to my 15 year old who's into musical theatre and she loved it!
I remember singing ‘who’s got the looks, who’s got the brains, who’s got everything?’ At the top of my lungs while driving my car with 2 dudes I knew on our way to score weed. The other 2 dudes looked at each other with some concern… like they were grappling with the conundrum of how based on the rules of the street they we’re entitled to bludgeon me to death and leave me in a shallow grave on account of my unbridled glee and wreckless abandon in singing Ben Folds Five out loud in times were Metallica and Wu-Tang were the prevailing currencies. I won’t lie, I felt embarrassed at being exposed for the playful soul that I am… that shit didn’t fly in the industrial heartland I came up in. Oh well… fuck them. They should’ve got their drivers licences and then jobs and then purchased themselves automobiles if they wanna judge.
If not the BEST 1995 song, "Underground" is - what with the "hand me my nose ring" and the "show me the mosh pit" lines - certainly the MOST 1995 song!
I remember stealing this CD from my dad's collection and taking it to my mum's.......I played it to all my friends all the time but they just wanted The Spice Girls.......I was only about 10 but I remember another song called "Alice Childress" or something like that but have never been able to locate it......dad took the CD back and moved away.....love to hear it again x
ben folds has one of those looks that gets better as he ages, i think. 45 yr old, thrice divorced ben folds in hipster glasses: pretty hot. 25 yr old shaved head ben folds: not so much.
I'm a few years younger than Ben Folds. When this song came out, I was exactly in that place of being in my late 20s and thinking, "OMG, I'm so old now!" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA! This is an awesome song, though.
This is not the right video. Where's the one that MTV used to play with the actual bunker kind of thing and the people climbing down into it? I can't find it. Does anyone have a link? 😠
@smittycal well I guess the song is about people not fitting in school and finding a group of people they can hang out with. And maybe the cowboys and outlaws in such represent that in way I guess being unruly and all. And they're all in the bar fighting and whatnot. It probably represents the meaning without blatantly putting it in your face
Through the years, Ben's hair has gotten longer and shaggier, Robert Sledge's (bassist) hair has gotten shorter and more clean cut, and Daren Jesse's (drummer) has stayed the same. Just add a beard.
I like ben folds and ben folds five but have never heard this song. It is very beatles. I am not a huge beatles fan but at least respect their influence.
@masonroe157900000 What video uses stick figures? You'll have to educate me on that one. And to answer your question I would prefer to see a video that relates to the song. There are a lot of videos before and after this that make sense and work well with the song...unfortunately this video and song dont mesh. If you listen to the song content you'll realize that the wild west theme has NOTHING to do with what BFF is talking about.
@KandyKrazed Ummm Im not sure what videos your watching but I've seen a lot of videos that actualy relate to the video. I'd list examples but I'd just be wasting my time.
@smittycal I'm just saying there's plenty of videos that have nothing to do with the song either :P (Again, you're right, waste of time posting several hundred links.) It's one of those "Techniques" that Hollywood does to make sure people talk about the video. "Hey bro, you see that weird ass video with the cowboys?" "Dude, you gotta watch this, it's messed up." I want to say "Advertising" but I don't think that'd be the best word for it :)
Annie Samuel Yeah, I don't disagree. Do you think it's coincidence or do you think Muse used this song as an influence? It's really only obvious at 0:50-0:58, where the piano sounds like a sped up version of the intro of survival. Maybe that tune predates both Ben Folds Five and Muse?
+Fin Taylor ok in simple terms for like music theory nerds who also know nothing about music theory what does "I+" mean. i mean if it were just numbers id be like oh ok that makes sense but that symbol confounds me
Colin Cassidy they're talking about the structure of (in this case 3 note) chords. The name of the chord description changes depending on what the bottom note is and what the chord is in relation to the tonic. The tonic is the key of the overall piece. In this case, there's CEG followed by CEG#. Someone else please expand on my description for Colin.

Back in my college days would turn on 120minutes on MTV and random gems like this would appear. Precious moments
It took me nearly 30 yrs to see this music video… after some of the best gigs I ever went to in the 90s 🥰
I was celebrating my 21st birthday at Cat’s Cradle third week of January 1995. I was drunk by the 1/3rd through the show when the first lines rang out. I yelled out ‘who the fuck are you!’ Everyone and the band started cracking up hysterically.
I saw them around 96, 97 or so at Irving Plaza. Amazing show.
@@thomasd9827So is that you we can hear on Naked Baby Photos?
Same here! Why did it take me so long!? Also what’s with the Goofy Cowboy theme? Doesn’t compliment the lyrics in my humble opinion
@@comoyoko if it was recorded in January’95, I do believe so.
Still as kick ass as it was when I first heard it in 1996 (here in the UK). Damn, I was so young back then 😥😥😪😢😢😭😭😭😭
This song will be played at my funeral.

My friend Amanda was a theater kid and really related to this song. RIP, Amanda.
Ahhh Triple J. 1995. They were some times alright. Thanks Ben. The artist for every occasion.
What a creative composition. Really speaks to their musicianship. Great stuff all over!! Cheers from Norway.
This is Ben Folds Five version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I miss this band so much. Took me through high school and college.
Except good.
Ben Folds Five were so much better than Ben Folds' solo albums. Wish they'd reunite!
@@norekfamily they did reunite…about seven years ago…
Such a good fucking song writer. I love this fucking man and this band

Best part: "It's industrial ! (cowbell)"

that takes me all the way back to 1995. great song.
This comment takes me all the way back to 2012.

I seriously never knew a music video existed for this until now.
This song was issued in the middle of golden era of the alternative music (1995).

If not the BEST 1995 song, "Underground" is - what with the "hand me my nose ring" and the "show me the mosh pit" lines - certainly the MOST 1995 song!
it sounds really good with the bass. Like a three piece with drums, piano, and bass with overdrive and fuzz to it.
hand me my noooose ring!
show me the most pit
Sweet song. Love Ben Folds
Still here in 2022 thumbs up 👍
I was racking my brains to recall the band name. Kept on coming up with Fox Force Five (pulp fiction).
Wow the outro is fantastic. Really wish the entire song had that same feel

okay the start of this song sounds like a Muse song... Survival, maybe?
That may be so but Underground was released in 1996, I would say if anything, Muse might have been inspired by Ben Folds Five. Both are great.
