So how do you decide which type of gouging to use for a given batch of cane? Do you have to finish a reed completely and test its characteristics to decide which system to use for the rest of that batch?
Hi Yes, generally for a model I would make 5-10 reeds using my current setup and see how they turn out. If those on average felt very dark and ‘dumpf’ (Skinner terminology), or if I consistently had the tip opening I mentioned at the end of the video, then I would make 10 more reeds but with an eccentric gouge and see what happens.
