    I am in the generation that precedes you. Therefore my teachers were yet another! generation back. The style was to berate, insult, and attack the student to get them to work up to the level the teachers wanted. Years later I was involved in setting up a mentorship program, and everyone was to talk about their mentors that helped them. I had nothing to say! There was no MENTORSHIP attitude when I started... just bullying. I think part of it is the era, but now it is unacceptable to teach that way. That is a good thing :)

    When I walked into the audition room for the university choir as a first year in front of a panel of four and an accompanist, the director asked me my name, and I said “um, James”. “Um James, is it? Your name is Um James?” I started to put my music back in my bag and was ready to walk out there and then, but luckily he said something else and got me to sing. Anyway that’s the day I found out I’m a countertenor, so I’m glad his terrible first impression didn’t lead me to quit singing there and then!

    What the Discovery theme sounds like to me is a composer doodling of an afternoon. It just doesn't work. It's nothing. The final chord is just plain weird, drawing attention to what is, effectively, the whole piece's atonality in a way that just screams "why"? Musically, what is the intention behind that chord? To be jarring to the viewer? What for? It doesn't excite me to expect adventures. It doesn't make me sad. It doesn't make me horrified. It feels almost like "oh I need to end it somewhere but let's mix it up a bit for no reason". It's perfunctory and sloppy, which surely is NOT the feel you want to create going into each episode!

    Wonderful video. I've been playing the Rieger 1A for a long time successfully but I'd like a shape that would be a bit more helpful for the extreme upper register and a bit more "lighter" for tonguing. I tried the Thunemann shape and found it a bit on the heavy side. Although it does have a bit more power than the 1A. Thank you for sharing your experience.

      @@burnbassoon I haven't given much thought to that. I'll definitely take your word on that for my next batch of reeds. But, again, have you tried or know of any shape that lends itself particularly to the upper register and/or to light/fast articulation? Good video! I appreciate the tip profiler blade depth recommendation of .04mm. Do you have a recommendation for blade depth on a profiler? Thanks!

    • @burnbassoon
      @burnbassoon 4 месяца назад

      It also depends on the distance of the cutting plate from the blade. Some companies have too wide a tolerance to accommodate for 0.04mm. You may have to go to 0.02mm. Blade depth on profiler: no, only because I don’t have a reliable way to measure. I generally sharpen my blade after 40 reeds, so I can allow for quite a deep cut. I like to see the bark come off in one pass. That’s not really helpful, I know…

    • @jesseschartz
      @jesseschartz 4 месяца назад

      @@burnbassoon It's always nice to hear about other approaches. I've never really measured specifically for my profiler (Rieger) just adjust the blade height (new or sharpened) until it feels "normal". Hi Andrew, this is wonderful and as a professional oboe reed maker, I can agree that it makes everything easier and more satisfying to know a few things about the player who will receive my hand-made reeds. Luckily, I seem to have missed whatever social media excitement that motivated your making this film. Cheers to all the brave souls who dare to make and sell and send reeds to some of the most demanding clients there ever could be! I say this with respect and admiration for those discerning musicians who trust us to fashion what will become their voice, hopefully a true and authentic one!
