If Gear 5 knocked some sense into him, he would have stayed down and let the Gorosei deal with Luffy. That way he would have saved himself from killing Vegapunk and maybe he would have been alive.

"Backstory was retconned" Will One Piece fans STOP calling every new piece of information we learn a retcon? How can Oda "retcon" Kizaru's backstory if we never knew his backstory in the first place? I wouldn't be surprised if Akainu has some sort of Zypher backstory. Pirates killed his family, and his town and the Marines took him in to raise him with absolute justice while others blamed them for not following the World Government, further indoctrinating Akainu. I don't know, but Oda does give characters tragic backstories, so as far as we know, Akainu might genuinely have a backstory as bad as Robin's or Law's.
One piece has over 1k chapters, and JJK only has 267. Oda had over a decade to develop characters. You'll never see a series with that many chapters ever again.
Id like to point out in one of latest Episodes of OP we seen talk of Man with burn scar sailing black ship in Green! Skies! And, Its course mentioned man can spawn Whirlpools to swallow enemy ships whole, Even if Dragon just purely controls Wind you can create Whirlpools with stronger controlled wind, But fact scene was shot in green skies was wild but Black Ship also had 2 Front n Rear Sail Masts with 3 Sail Center Mast? We feel like akainu is bad guy but he is not a bad guy, akainu in marineford did his job, he just followed procedures, people arguing that he almost killed koby, well in real life also if one subordinate does such thing in middle of war he has to face severe consequences, because its not even pride to take such action and its against military law also. Akainu backstory must be sad, no man become as resilient as akainu without a reason. It's why I'm always adverse to call Akainu or any marines villains, antagonists sure but not villains (except for the literal rat marines that are just pirates in uniform). They're doing their jobs and protecting order, we just see them as villains because they're against our protagonists.

Pirates killed his family, and his town and the Marines took him in to raise him with absolute justice while others blamed them for not following the World Government, further indoctrinating Akainu. I don't know, but Oda does give characters tragic backstories, so as far as we know, Akainu might genuinely have a backstory as bad as Robin's or Law's.
One piece has over 1k chapters, and JJK only has 267. Oda had over a decade to develop characters. You'll never see a series with that many chapters ever again.
