I have seen many repairs and alterations made to heavy vehicles, your attention to detail is excellent,it’s always good to watch you work, I’m glad of this opportunity.I never miss your videos . Thank you.
Truck looks so much better awesome job. I like it when I hear people say I’m not a welder and lay dimes like it nothing. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
For someone to claim that they are not a welder. Dude you lay down excellent beads don’t sell yourself short. Nice 👍 Job you’ve got this. Have a Blessed One Sir.
For "not being a welder" your welding sure looks better than the "professional" welds I come across from the factory. GM and Mopar seem to be the worst offenders. My Chevy 4500s accessories and bumpers look like they were done with jumper cables and a coat hanger.
Those welds you are doing, look fine! Being a welder, is 10% instruction and 90% practice, in my opinion. I have had two years of instruction at a community college.
Enjoy the turn and burn content. Battling the rust isn’t a problem when you don’t keep them long enough to see it develop. Informative and entertaining, thanks JC.
The welds look perfect to me. I took welding at the local tech school 30 years ago. Yes, I know vertical up is the "propper" technique but I never did it that way.... and I never had a problem because something was welded in the wrong direction either. That bed isn't going anywhere. Nice work, JC! 👍
I learned welding and got my certificates (City and guilds 201) in welding and metalwork engineering in England, UK, 31 years ago and have to say, very good welding, clean welds and I would weld downwards, I have tried welding upwards and you have to be doing upwelds regularly to produce a proper clean, equal penetration on both surfaces. Great work on the reposition of the axle and the brackets. Love the video's and enjoying the work you are doing with all those vehicles.
your welds are fine ,I weld what ever way works for me. and I weld a lot of 1/4 plate and 3/8 plate up hill down hill it gets it done fine, great video J.C. sold my 48 K-b5 and bought a 75 international 6/8 yrd dump truck with 29,788 miles run good but needs fuel tank, pics to follow this spring Chris from Cashmere
The other weldor at work welds truck frames vertical down. Hasn't had one break in over 20 years. I do mine up, but don't argue with the other guys success.
Looks like to me you're doing a great job of welding no matter which way you go, I have to do the same thing and I'm far from a welder. I enjoy your videos and learn lots even at my age.
J.C. I enjoy your Channel thoroughly mate, never feel you have to explain your methods to anybody. Armchair experts usually know sweet bugger all, think they do...but they don't ! Keep on doin" what you've been doin'. Worked well for you and your bride so far. Best Wishes mate.
im will continue to learn and improve. you are correct. i owe no one an explanation on anything. i am going to do what i do how i do it. we do just fine. thanks for watching.
Glad you're back working inside, that truck is in very nice condition, hope the owner takes good care of it! Have a safe work week, stay warm too. Doug@ the "ranch"
Like always you make it look easy but I know it's not easy it's a lot of work I guess that's because you done it so much keep up the great work love the content
I am not a welder either, I only touched on the welding rudimentary and as part of my metal specialist training, but and that can be clear to everyone, a weld seam that is supposed to connect two flat materials is only good if it penetrates both parts sufficiently deeply. This means that the weld root must be sufficiently deep on both workpieces. If you tend to move the weld pool more towards one part, it will penetrate more deeply there. Which then leads to the fact that the other, less penetrated part is also less well connected. I don't know how much such a frame connector has to withstand tensile load, but when welding I always tend to strive for the maximum possible. If in doubt, I then just put a second or third seam over it. Especially in the case of commercial vehicles and their high payload, I would be more than uncomfortable if I imagined that a seam here would not hold, e.g. when braking hard. But, as always fine work an very accurate finish!👍
Love the new shop lights, the older I get can’t get to much light. nothing wrong with a downhill pass if you clean the joint well and make sure you burn it in good, you won’t get as much fillet material but for your aplcaton
Hey JC , The truck bed turn out nice!👍! Funny thing I was taught welding 48 years ago, BUT I can’t weld up hill to save my religion anymore to make it look good! Lol 😂. I am way out of practice! And that is what welding is a lot of practice! Your doing ok in my book! Regards Bob Lee
Fixed up and back to the customer, nice job J.C! 🙂👍 I can't stand how every manufacture of tape measures makes the end loose like that 🤬 It's *infuriating* to me! Hard to get an accurate measurement.
The welds I see in this vlog will probably hold longer the you will be on the planet, nice 👍 looking to me , I’m not a welder either, and mine look like that to for the most part, , wire feed made a whole lotta people some what welders, kool thanks BigAl California.
Very good job bud and will be looking forward to your next vid ..and I really enjoyed your( last live feed ) so don't know when ya will do another but I'm hoping to catch the next one but till then godbless ..
Looks good to me. Long as the welds hold it doesn't matter how good they look. No more overloading the front axle and the turning radius is no doubt better.
When you mentioned needing more lights. Have you thought of having a roofing company put in some clear roofing panels that match you current roof panels? It will save on power bills. Vertical ups are always hard with a mig. Good root width, good penetration and even. nothing wrong with that.
I've built a lot of trailers and a few truck frames and a lot of other things, I still don't like welding upside-down and I weld better going down also. Welding uphill seems like the weld is getting away from line of sight where as welding down hill the weld gets closer and easier to see.
You do great work J.C. don't sweat the horse arse comments. I watch this one hardcore pro guy who pieces together busted excavators using torches and stick as well as the Mig now and again. The one thing he does you would dig is he uses that air hammer with that bundle of steel sticks on his welds as soon as he drops the stick or torch while it's still hot and it polishes his welds and makes them look cool. He goes by the principle that it strengthens what he does on the weld joint but I think he just digs the fantastic polish look it gives them. I know you use that particular air attachment to knock off scale from rusty frames to see how bad the rust is... but hey... it works like a charm on the welds. He just keeps it right next to him while he welds. Weld, hammer with the descaler... wash rinse repeat and all that. Works! Some other guy I watched does it as well [he was rebuilding the pivot on a big equipment hauler]. Can't hurt to give it a try [right up there with those carbide saw blades for cutting steel man!] :-))
@@j.c.smithprojects You know it. Ya that guy is fascinating to watch for sure [old timer]. Your welds are efficient and do the job for sure. I'd have no worries with your welds at all. Wild how he pounds the welds with that air hammer rig eh? I noticed he flattens the dimes to a smooth looking deal by doing that. Anyway, as per always well done on that truck. Nice!!
You sure have your skills, knowledge, and the way you do things put together like a fine Swiss watch. I really love watching you work twenty minutes to punch frame holes just amazing.had my Mack in shop there guys took a whole day to do what you did in about fourth minutes. Where are you located? You do a great job please keep the video’s coming.
maybe the difference is those guys get paid by the hour and i dont. i like to be efficient with my time because i have more work to do than one man can get done. i am in northeast ohio.
Nothing wrong with vertical down welds. They just tend to produce a smaller bead, that’s all. If it’s adequate fir what you’re doing, fine. If you need a larger bead, make multiple passes. No big deal.
I'm glad I'm not the only one who can't weld up hill! I can't weld upside-down either. You did one thing wrong tho..Your supposed to spray the paint on before it cools down! 😆
That saw is a nice lil unit .I think you mentioned how much it sold for when I asked ya about it on your live feed ya had cause honestly that would be a must for cutting metal or even wood .but is it a diamond blade or a diffrent type blade ..but enough of that lol .but the job your doing is looking nice for sure .but great vid bud godbless and stay safe ...
permanent magnet. that was one of the big attractions. had heard of the electric magnets falling off the side of a frame when a breaker tripped or when someone pulled the cord loose.
people may start wondering......first my special purple sparkly pencil when marking holes on the last axle move and now my wife's purple glasses......it doesnt matter. what matters is making sure i got the holes in the right place.
salt and rust are inevitable. is it better to try and seal it or leave it open so it can self wash? i dont know. i can say this, i think the rest of the bed will fail before that steel will.
Glade to see it done but your a pretty good welder better then my welds but I'm self taught only 2 or 3 times a year but mine hold and look worse then yours so don't worry about the negative people
nice job mr jc. welding is one of those topic everyone has opinions on. iv seen more bad welds on crap shoved out of production lines and assembly plants that make your welds look like your a mac daddy dime stacker...lol
Pardon me, but you are a welder, among many other things. Most of the welds you have done are acceptable, even if they do not have the policed look of your son's welds.
First 👍's up JC thanks again for taking your time for us all to be with you for the rest of the build
You will better than most of the men that I've ever worked with keep to your own and do what you feel best at doing your best
I have seen many repairs and alterations made to heavy vehicles, your attention to detail is excellent,it’s always good to watch you work, I’m glad of this opportunity.I never miss your videos . Thank you.
i sure appreciate that. i try to give everything my best. it may not be "the" best but it will always be "my" best!
Millions of miles of pipeline gets welded vertical down, I’m not sure why everyone gets upset about it, but great work as always!
dont know. never had any troubles with this method.
Pipe line welders are also highly trained and inspected
Great video. I’m sold on that circular saw after seeing this
wait until you see what i did with it in the next project series. huge time saver.
You're a far cry better welder than I am. Looks really good.
Truck looks so much better awesome job. I like it when I hear people say I’m not a welder and lay dimes like it nothing. Keep up the good work and stay safe out there.
my problem is i dont weld enough on a regular basis. i struggle at times but i have never broke a weld.
For someone to claim that they are not a welder. Dude you lay down excellent beads don’t sell yourself short. Nice 👍 Job you’ve got this. Have a Blessed One Sir.
i get lucky once in awhile. a welder could reproduce the same pattern over and over. i have a long way to go.
For "not being a welder" your welding sure looks better than the "professional" welds I come across from the factory. GM and Mopar seem to be the worst offenders.
My Chevy 4500s accessories and bumpers look like they were done with jumper cables and a coat hanger.

Those will look like masterpieces if you compare them to what's under a BigTex or PJ trailer.
Those welds you are doing, look fine! Being a welder, is 10% instruction and 90% practice, in my opinion. I have had two years of instruction at a community college.
Being accurate shows in the quality of your work
turn out great thanks .. wish you left more time of the finished truck at the end
JC you are a very humble and honest person.
The left hand barely holding the steering wheel with 2 fingers at speed tells the story. Well done.
JC, for your builds you should include a before and after picture because you have transformed that truck.
Nice job J.C. Bet the turning radius is a lot better. Thanks.
Always. Like your video. Good job. As my grandfather taught me. Devil. In details. Your pride in what you do is so obvious.

When you mentioned needing more lights. Have you thought of having a roofing company put in some clear roofing panels that match you current roof panels? It will save on power bills. Vertical ups are always hard with a mig. Good root width, good penetration and even. nothing wrong with that.
i just put up a bunch of new led lights. they use far less electric than the fluorescents.

i had done 2 other brackets on the bed. i used the uphill method. by the time i was about done, i was able to make a decent uphill pass.

I bet that truck might even steer out of the driveway unlike how it steered in
Love thoughs internationals, what's next on the menu?
next one is already in the shop. hydraulics, differential, cutting, fabri-cobbling and some crappy welding....it has it all!
Did you by that carbide saw at the Home Depot? I have heard you say before you pick up quite a few Milwaukee tools there.

Why don't you use a stick welder for these joints?
because i have a mig and dont have a stick.
How much does this cost and where are you located?
around here it costs between 2500 and 3500 depending on the truck, suspension, if anything else needs moved and so on.
