This is definitely my favorite M.R. James story, and you do it so much justice. I'm planning on listening to it and maybe some other M.R. James stories with my parents as we prep fondue on Christmas Eve.
I always thought this was one of the best from M. R. James, and certainly one of the creepiest. This narration and the sound effects that support it are just perfect and bring the whole thing flying at the listener like a wind on a cold night. The nightmare sequence could not possibly have been delivered any better..surely M. R. somehow collaborated with this production?!
Fantastic story and narration! The old gent gave us another good scare. This one is good! Great job, Jasper! The music and sounds remain phenomenal!! Thanks
Here's another in our Ghost Stories for Christmas series - this time by dear old M.R. James. Hope you enjoy it. Coming on Christmas Eve is a new story written especially for the channel. Hope you enjoy.
Some interesting facts I found due to this excellent reading: This is the only *MRJ* story set on Christmas Day & the *Bow Street Runners* were the first professional police force in Britain from 1749~1839. THX *Jasper* for sparking my interest & the bell sounds are wonderful ... can never get enough of these distant bells 👍👍👍👍👍🎄🎁 the scream, the owl, the bell ...he couldn't sleep after that? Really/? Why ever not? 😨🦉🔔🔔🔔
When a friend asked me to recommend one story with one genuinely frightening scene in it, I recommended this one to her because of the nightmare about the Punch and Judy show. I was really hoping this would be part of the Christmas series. It's late evening. I've been looking forward to listening to this all day. I was not disappointed.
Thanks Simon, glad you enjoyed it! When I re-read it for the recording I was impressed again by how effective and genuinely unnerving that whole dream sequence is. Some unusually visceral writing by James.
Hi Alison, this has a reputation of being one of the author's more "opaque" stories. But I'll sum it up after putting a great big SPOILER ALERT notice here. SPOILERS AHEAD... The narrator's dream was prophetic (in a surreal way). Two travelling Punch & Judy men with a criminal bent apparently killed the narrator's uncle by hanging him (for reasons unknown). When he watches their performance in the market square he sees from his elevated position the ghost of his uncle (with a bag over his head) rising up within the showbox. One of the men runs away in terror and it is assumed he is being chased by the other. In a blind panic he runs over the side of a chalk pit and falls to his death, but the other man is nowhere to be seen. When they go back the other man is still in the tent, dead, and we presume he was strangled by the uncle's ghost.
@@EnCryptedHorror Thanks muchly Jasper, that helps. I simply couldn't work out why the uncle was hanged and the other two killed. Opaque is the word. I often find MR James rather unsatisfactory. Your telling of the dream was super scary!
Good choice, this is often harder to find than some of his other more well known tales not really sure why, just as effective as his more famous works.

Keep your eye out on Christmas Eve...👀

And just when I thought that I knew all of M.R. James's works, along comes Jasper...thank you King of Creepiness.
You're very welcome, Jared! Cheers.

This is the kind of dream you get if you eat too much cheese before bed. Perhaps that's why the maid preferred to serve it at breakfast 😆

That's very true. It IS one of James most effective and is often overlooked.

Am M R James! Thanks Jasper. Will listen later.
Just recently stumbled upon your channel. Love it! One of the best.
Always forget how good this one is. Especially when performed so well. Hope you had a great end of year Jasper.
You too! Here's to a better 2022! Onwards and upwards and all that!
Thankyou. I hope you have a good Christmas 🎄
You're welcome! Have a super Christmas yourself 🙂
Excellent work, as always. Thank you.
Thanks Rosie!
Beautiful narration and sound design. Thank you so much for this!
You're welcome. Thank you, Rob!
understood about full time job demands.......happy 2022. . . you still da best... take your time...
Trying to do at least two a week. Expect another on Friday or Saturday.
Only do what works for you.....its all good
This is one of those stories that both delight and baffle me, that I can imaging discussing with friends over a cup of something.
It's certainly one of the author's weirdest 🤔
I am baffled; perhaps I nodded off... What/who caused the deaths of the three men? Fabulous reading Jasper, as usual.

Thanks Aaron. And one of the best dream sequences the author ever wrote.
As always great job from Mr le strange though I was thinking caper would be more fitting than jasper because it's more ghostly 😅😄😆
Haha, I had considered "Casper" but (a) it's taken and (b) he's friendlier than I am 😄👻
I was never fond of Punch & Judy it always gave me the all~overs & it still does
You can be thankful that I didn't go ahead and make the swazzle I was going to use to do the Punch voice... 😃
