- Why Am I Stranded in the Middle of the Ocean? Our Crazy Sailing Journey Begins! 🌊⛵
Ever wondered what it feels like to be floating powerless in the middle of the ocean? Join us in this first long-form episode as we rewind and dive into the whirlwind adventure that led us here. Six months ago, I stumbled upon the exact same 1989 36ft sailboat my parents had owned years ago. From casually browsing a brokerage site to road-tripping across Mexico with my parents, the journey to owning this boat was nothing short of serendipitous!
Our Story Unfolds:
Finding Our Boat: A chance conversation with my mom led to discovering our family's old Catalina sailboat for sale. Despite not planning to buy a boat for another year, the stars aligned, and I couldn't resist this massive coincidence.
Survey and Purchase: With my dad's expertise, we conducted a thorough survey of the boat. After a few intense days, I made an offer, celebrated with margaritas, and she was officially ours!
Moving Onboard: Transitioning to boat life was fast-paced. From saying bittersweet goodbyes to friends and packing our lives into boxes, to booking a one-way ticket to La Cruz, the journey was filled with emotions and excitement.
First Impressions: Arriving in La Cruz post-hurricane was daunting. The town was desolate, but stepping onboard our boat felt like coming home. Despite initial doubts, we knew we were ready for this new chapter.
Meet Us:
Sage: Growing up in over a dozen countries and sailing on four different boats, my life has been a series of adventures. From Japan and Argentina to the American South and the Philippines, I’ve experienced diverse cultures and incredible journeys. Now, all grown up and years later, I’m stepping back into the sailing life as the owner and captain of my own boat.
Petra: My partner in crime, Petra, hails from the Czech Republic. After years of working on cruise ships, she found herself in Mexico, hosting tours on catamaran expeditions and private yacht excursions. Despite her love for the water, living on a boat presents new challenges and adventures.
Our Sailing Adventure:
Challenges and Preparations: Like any boat, ours needed work, gear, money, and time. Living and fixing a sailboat is a constant compromise-spending more time and money now or later. We dived into boat projects with the goal of setting off in six months. We ended up leaving five months later!
Learning and Growing: Follow along as we navigate the challenges of boat ownership, learn how to sail, and race against the clock to untie and head out for the season.
Why Watch?:
