When you steam the strips did you do all strips on the forum at once or one at a time like the glue up. I like the way you secured the laminate with thr cord instead of clamps. Im getting ready to do my first net, im glad I found your video. Thanks Art

Hello Jim, nice work! I am building my first net out of black walnut and can't make up my mind on what the best finish should be for it. Can you help me out and give me some guidence? Shellac, Lacquer, danish oil, epoxy????????? I'm just not sure!!! Cheers!

I’ve used a couple different methods over the years. I have had the best results with a marine spar urethane mix. I like to mix this with mineral spirits 50/50. I use a cheese cloth wrapped in a clean rag to apply this finish. Quick thin coats, steel wool between each coat. 12 coats minimum. Wait 24 hrs between coats.

James, I’ve been making my nets for about ten years. I have come up with several different ways to attach the lanyard. Have not found the perfect one yet. Can you tell me where you got your brass swivels you used?

I get them on eBay. Look up Solid Brass Swivel eye rotating connector for bag fob key chain craft use

How many strips do you typically use per net? Any woods that you have found work well or not so well?
I am getting a form done now and hope to start bending soon.

I shoot for an over thickness of between 3/8 to 1/2”. My strips are pretty thin so I usually use between 9 and 10 strips. I’ve had good results with different hardwoods like padauk, maple, sapele, walnut, bloodwood, Purple Heart. Zebra wood works well but you have to pay attention to the grain direction. Keep in mind you have to pay attention with each species of wood but I’ve just noticed more so with zebra wood.

Could you do an equipment requirement list for this? I'd love to try and make my own nets.

Thank you, I source it from lumber mills or I’ve ordered smaller slabs online and had them shipped.

Wondering where you might have gotten your templates from? Can't seem to source one...

I didn’t get them from anywhere. All the jigs I use I made them from scratch. I merely got my French curve set out, drew a shape that liked and transferred it to plywood, refined it over the course of several interactions. Would you like to see more content on this?
