Watching this video really gave me a education of why certain Fly Rods are so very expensive and how the makers take pride and attention to detail and the finish product speaks for itself, WOW if i owned one i would be afraid to even use it. Peace.
I love this and all the episodes. When it aired I missed when he mentions camping in the Allegheny National Forrest. That’s where I grew up. What a small world

Too many others like to put on the act that they know what they're doing and then fu** up and laugh it off like it was an isolated incident. lol I feel like I am learning with you and your willingness to be the student gets the sub from me. I look forward to your future content.
This is a real find.I knew a gentleman named Peter McVey from Corbett Lake Lodge just outside Merrit ,BC. He was a cane fly rod maker. He had a following of many people around the world who would seek him out to purchase these rods. Looking at these people here in the video all I can think of is " for the love of fishing ". Thanks
🌴 Been refurbishing some antique cane saltwater rods for my own wall hangers and found this channel and showing the process of manufacturing a rod from raw bamboo to a finished rod was great , I do wish it would have shown installing the reel seat and varnishing the rod but I still enjoyed seeing the process , this was an informative video , and what a great couple , thanks for making it 👍🏼
How fascinating, I was approached a few years back by a Dr. no joke and asked if I made bamboo flyfishing rods. I said no and he said I should because there is a demand for handmade rods. Great video Eric, keep them coming.
Great video. It took me back to the mid 80's when I worked as an apprentice for a winter at the Paul Young Rod Co. under Paul's grandson, Todd. That Tonkin cane is an amazing material.
Eric, I stumbled onto your show late one night in So Cal on PBS, and immediately perked up. All I fish with are cane rods, I've done small repairs but no total re-dos or makes; I know what it takes to make one. Wish you had time to show varnishing, then taking the stick out for christening. But no complaints, great show. I wondered what taper did you guys follow? tight lines, Darrell K.
Totally captivating, I’m a retired woodshop teacher from Northern California still with ten fingers. I’m looking to augment my passion for fishing with rod making. Can you supply me with the name of the book Jeff used to get started. Much appreciated.
I have been watching your videos for quite some time but I think this one I like the best. I really appreciate your attitude and willingness to learn new things. Thank you.😎
What an absolutely beautiful setting to film a wonderful episode! So interesting to watch all the steps involved in crafting that elegant fly rod. What a wonderful life they must have being able to work together each day creating such treasures! Eric, it's almost time for you to take your first fishing trip for 2020! Hope you have an awesome time! So glad you're adding more full episodes of ACL on RUclips! God bless you and keep you safe and well!!
A great video! I've made about a dozen graphite rods (spinning and fly) in a variety of weights, but I've never made a split bamboo fly rod. I'm envious!
I ❤️❤️❤️ your channel.. I've learned so much from watching all the different types of things that you've covered and really appreciate how you bring all the different types of almost forgotten trade/crafts and document them for us to witness. Thank you so much for sharing.. I'm learning so much.. hugs from Canada
I was sad you didn't run a full reveal with detail. But I suppose you need to let everyone find out for themselves by way of purchase. And you definitely had me looking them up. I'm also happy that you own the rights to your show. You'll blow up here soon.
One of the best & most interesting video's ive seen . Especially since im looking at putting new guides on an antique bamboo rod at the moment. Thanks for your great content.
Excellent episode !! I have two books on the subject ... one autographed by the author ... but not one rod. Still using the fiberglass rod I bought in the early seventies. Take care Eric !!
Nothing feels like a split cane rod I still have my wife’s Grand Father’s rod I like using it in areas where I won’t find any monsters so I don’t over stress it. I prefer it over all of my other rods of modern materials. I also have a shorter trolling rod for Salmon fishing here in Oregon.
As a bamboo rod maker I can say you’re a brave man to split cane without gloves. Bamboo rod makers can honestly say they have Tonkin cane literally in their blood...
