A tidbit about Christianity, usually the far-right-leaning ones' nonsense beef with the LGBT community; there was a quote in an edition of the Bible that had been mistranslated to say just... vile things. The CORRECT translation of the quote was to actually forbid p-philia, which I think is a much, MUCH bigger issue.

I think a bigger problem with disability representation is how the story is written, Sia's movie wasn't just awful because of the actress not being autistic, another huge reason was the writing not understanding how autism works, especially with the restraint scenes. Even then, there are plenty of stories written about mental disorders written by people who did proper research, that are amazing. Authentic voices can help a lot of stories, but they aren't nessisarally a requirement. The bigger problem with Hollywood stories in particular is that they want to hire famous people in their films, so they hire them instead of a disabled actor who's a newcomer, they go with someone famous.

Exactly, you're right on the money. The problem isn't the casting, because, you know, acting is an actual thing, it's the god-awful writing that accompanies these movies most of the time. Which seems to be 99% of big Hollywood movies these days, actually minus the big indie hits like Parasite, Everywhere All At Once, and RRR. Sia's movie was the absolute worst example of this made by people who probably hate autistic people or something and want to ruin their reputation. Probably some secret plot from the hollywood deep state cult to diminish the value of the spiritually enlightened, since only autistic people are the only ones who can truly comprehend God and are the next natural stage in human psyco-spiritual evolution. I kid, I kid. Unless...

Autism aside, no need to be so cynical about cinema, there are lots and lots and lots of good films out there getting ignored or bashed because people just focuses on over the top "artistry" usually independent films that everyone knows about.
That's the mindset that's provoking the "Mario Movie rating controversy" right now, just to cite a example.

With the pistol emoji becoming the water gun emoji, I’m wondering if it would be different if it was a sci-fi ray gun instead. Better yet, if Nintendo wants to make their own, we need the Zapper.

    • @OverlordZeroULTIMA
      @OverlordZeroULTIMA Год назад +21

See, I feel like sci-fi blaster (the more cartoony the better!) would be better than water gun as well. While I do love Star Wars, I wouldn't want a blaster from it as an emoji since they still look like a basic gun (even if they shoot lasers and not bullets).
I mean, I wouldn't miss a gun emoji at all, since I don't use them in the slightest (aside from ones like the thumbs up), but I'd just want to be more considerate toward those who were affected by mass shootings (or gun violence in general). After it's happened, I'm sure it's been hard to recover. Even military vets may return home with PTSD, and fireworks and thunder trigger them, so some emojis are just better off not made, especially if it's based off a real weapon. Or if they ARE made, at least give the person the ability to make them invisible so they can't be used, or just simply delete them.

Im a disabled person, and while I don’t need anything like a wheelchair or a cane, I do get special parking meaning I see the old accessibility symbol a lot, and I wanted to offer some insight on #3.
I personally prefer the new one for the same reason Josh does: it paints the disabled person as someone who isn’t completely helpless. I understand there are disabled people out there who need way more help than I do, I still don’t want to be portrayed as someone who can’t do anything for themselves. I hate when people see me as a sad porcelain doll after learning about my diagnosis, especially if they knew prior and saw me doing things going for long walks, rehearsing a chase scene for the school play, hanging up bird feeders, etc, and know I can take care of myself. I want to see disabled people being shown as capable of doing things for themselves more often, so I love the new accessibility symbol showing someone pushing themselves. Sorry this was long, I just wanted to share my opinion.

Even now, at 22 and with a job, my boss has my mom's phone number, just to make sure she knows that I'm a good little girl who does everything she's told. It makes me feel like I'm useless on my own, that I need someone to tell me what to do.😢

@@billiezeiszler608 I’m also on the spectrum. I’m in my last year at a catholic school. I just want to go to a non-catholic college and move on with my life because, as far as I’ve seen (and experienced), catholicism claims to know the absolute truth about everything with their only evidence to it being that it was said by this character that could or could not exist.
I don’t think catholicism as a church has a strong opinion against people on the spectrum, but most catholics sure do, because catholics think we were all made similar to God, but some of us are more like God than others (for example, God isn’t on the spectrum), and the people who are the most similar to God are better by default, and therefore superior, this by their own logic.
Sorry for going off topic I just felt like I needed to say this to someone.

It's a cultural reality. It's almost a cliche. I think all over Asia but very much in Japan that's basically always the joke. That a peach will always resemble a butt. You can see this in, for example, Okami, when you visit the old man in the tiny village. He has peach drawings on the wall and if you slash an art scroll it reveals an artpiece of the peach expanded into a full body, showing it used as the butt of a beautiful woman.

As an autistic person myself, non-autistic actors playing autistic characters has never bothered me personally. I view it the same way I view any actor playing a character with differences from themselves. The art of acting is to be able to become someone you're not, and I don't really feel comfortable setting a precedent that only actors that share certain traits with the characters they play can play those characters. If, for example, we decide that only gay actors can play gay characters, then logically the reverse would also be true, that only straight actors can play straight characters. But if that were the case, we never would have had Jim Parsons playing Sheldon Cooper, and he fits that role so well.

Heck, they almost completely cancelled HT4 (which was in development before Spiderverse) because they wanted to improve their reputation, but decided instead to transfer development of the animation to a Chinese studio and then shadow drop it on Netflix out of nowhere. Now Sony is #2 with DreamWorks at #1 who is finally getting out of their first real dark age (Kung Fu Panda 3 to Boss Baby 2) as Disney fails deeper and deeper at being even slightly good. Harambe did not attack the child. The child fell/jumped into the enclosure while their guardian was not paying attention. The gorilla grabbed him and kept running from one side of the enclosure of the other, like it would trying to protect a baby gorilla, because it was getting riled up by the onlookers screaming and otherwise freaking him out. Human children bodies are not as resilient as baby gorillas', though, the crowd could not be calmed down so that the zookeepers might have a chance to go in and defuse the situation, and, with the compounding risk that hitting Harambe with a tranquilizer would further put the child in danger (either hitting him directly or the surprised, hurt, and rapidly uncoordinated with sedation animal doing something unfortunate), the zoo officials had to shoot and kill the gorilla. The child came out fine. The guardian was never charged. Harambe died. The zoo's public image was rescued shortly afterward thanks to a premature hippo named Fiona being born and raised by keepers. And the chronically online made Harambe a meme.

I'm not sure if a Gorilla would drag a baby gorilla many meters across the ground like a rag doll, banging their head on the concrete. You can see in footage that Harambe dragged the child along the ground for several meters, battering him, but I excluded this footage in the name of good taste. As it is extremely shocking to see. According to news reports, he was shot because the zookeepers didn't want to risk having a child's limbs ripped off. Tranquilizer was too risky as this would not have acted fast enough. A gorilla is not as predictable as a human when a change is introduced to their habitat.
I wonder how different the social media anger against a gorilla shooting would be if we also had a dead child because zookeepers didn't act fast enough.
If you'd like to see the footage and explanations from zookeepers, I've attached the link here: ruclips.net/video/BUCfY270l7k/видео.html

I suspect the problem is that it is a legally required symbol under ADA with very specific details (like the background *must* be blue, green is not official and therefore isn't recognized as compliant). If the design was changed then the law would have to be updated and everyone would have to update their signs or else be non-compliant and face fines. And the reason there has to be 1 universally recognized symbol is because otherwise people could not maintain the alert (letting the paint wear away but so long as there's faint blue they are ok) or could frivolously sue because "it wasn't what I thought it meant."
It's probably more a "legal red tape" thing than anything else.

For the water gun: consistency is extremely important for communication. Different platforms can stylize emoji in different ways, but they need to always depict the same thing. If one person picks the water gun emoji because they want to evoke playfulness, and the recipient sees the realistic pistol emoji instead, that us unnecessary misunderstanding and friction.
The water gun strikes me as a very obvious example of virtue signalling -- when a party tries to appear to be more moral and to appear to care more about an issue than they actually do. Seeing squirt guns where others see weapons is not at all solidarity for victims of gun violence. I'd say it's quite the opposite.

    • @klikkolee
      @klikkolee Год назад

@@phantomstrider "when could they benefit from having it" is the kind of question relevant to a discussion of removing it. But I don't think it's fair to assess this as similar to removing the pistol emoji. It's more like obscuring it. Nowadays, a lot of people are going to be aware that the water gun emoji is the pistol emoji in new clothes, and I do expect that to color how people who care about guns perceive it -- whether they care by virtue of being a victim of violence or for some other reason. Until you see "The water gun emoji used to be an emoji of a real pistol" broadly treated as trivia, this won't be a removal of the pistol emoji.

"Handicap" parking spots are probably the reason why there are "problems" (not "controversies") with the new logo. Here in the states public places are legally required by the Americans with Disabilities Act to offer close and wide parking spaces that are clearly identified with blue parking lines and the 1960s blue wheelchair symbol, and when discussing legally required symbols there is no wiggle room for how it looks since every detail has to match. I'm autistic as well, and on the topic of a neurotypical actor playing an autistic character, I disagree with the notion that an actor necessarily has to be a member of the social group they portray; it is acting, after all, and the whole point is to be able to portray something you're not. What I do take issue with (and I have no idea where the specific example pointed to in this video stands, I'm just mentioning this as a general statement) is when a social group is depicted in media content without having input from people who are members of the social group being depicted (for example, a movie that depicts Japanese society but has nobody in the writing room, cast, or crew who has any actual firsthand experience with Japanese culture); the reason for this is that, by failing to include people who are familiar with the culture they're depicting, the content creators run the risk of unintentionally misrepresenting the people they depict (to continue my example, they may fail to understand subtleties of customs and language, which could lead to something intended as positive or benign being interpreted as offensive; look up George H.W. Bush flipping off Australia when he thought his hand gesture would be interpreted as "V for Victory" for a real-world example of this exact kind of thing).
It also gets particularly complicated when trying to gatekeep actors portraying characters with mental or neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism (or bipolar disorder, or schizophrenia, or OCD, or a variety of others) because there are no definitive ways to test for those conditions; diagnosis is inherently subjective to an extent, and even when a diagnosis is present, symptoms may not be obvious. There is no way to say with certainty that a particular person is or isn't autistic. But again, at the end of the day, I personally don't care; all I care about is that the representation is accurate, and, on the specific topic of representing autism, that can be done by having an autistic writer and a neurotypical actor just the same as having a neurotypical writer and an autistic actor.

No offense, Strider, but I never understood this argument of "Only people of [insert group] should play people of that group in movies." I'm visually impaired and don't need Daredevil or Ray Charles to be played by actual blind people. I just want them to be done justice which Hollywood tends to be better at when they focus on acting talent instead of labels. Which is of course not to say that I don't appreciate actual disabled people getting work in Hollywood. I can totally see why filmmakers would want to cast their characters authentically. But that should be a creative decision, not an absolute must, because then I would wonder where the line is. Can only shortsighted, black-haired orphans play Harry Potter? Who would play characters with early childhood autism? I'm not sure there are many actors with this condition.
And what about the opposite? Wouldn't that logic imply that people who are on the autism spectrum shouldn't get to play characters who aren't?
When people can only ever play themselfs, I wonder what the purpose of acting still is.
Personally it feels like society is currently hellbent on coming up with just different ways to reduce people on their labels instead of actually normalizing them, which is why I am not a fan of this line of thinking.
(I'm not gonna go on Twitter crusades over this though.)

I feel a lot of us forget that even if we are going through harshness in our current climate, we shouldn't forget those in even worse situations. I've seen a lot of people hate on bigoted countries/states, but its so rare to see actual sympathy to those in those places forced to be closeted for their safety. It's good to always be thankful to what we have, while also not forgetting those in worse situations deserve sympathy. You were already one of my favorite channels, but the last entry enforced that so hard in my mild, cause you care so much for the world and people in it. As a wheelchair user the debate over the accessibility icon is INCREDIBLY silly. It seems like the whole debate is the figure in the original symbol was just sitting there, and the new one shows a person in motion... Thinking about other simplified icons depicting people (bathroom signs, crosswalks etc) sometimes the person is just standing and sometimes they're moving/walking. I don't see a problem with using both and both the hatred for the new symbol and the graffiti over the old symbol are both pointless and don't accomplish anything. There's bigger problems facing disabled people than if the stick figure in a wheelchair is moving or not.

      You should be good.
I'm no chef. Nor have I ever had culinary classes. But here's what I'm guessing. (I really wrote an essay for this stuff 💀.)
I'd say that the amount/ type of ingredients that you use should dictate the placement of the cheese.
Are you just using the bread, cheese, and meat? Well if that's the case, then just put the cheese where ever.
Are you using lettuce, tomatoes, onions, condiments, and pickles? Then put the cheese on top of the pattie.
If you place it on the bottom or in the middle of all of the other stuff, you might not be able to taste the cheese at all. Especially since condiments, onions, and pickles tend to either have a stronger/ sour flavor to them. Which can easily obscure the flavor of the cheese.
Tomatoes and lettuce mainly keep those more flavorful ingredients separated from the cheese and pattie. Both of which. Add their own unique flavor to the burger as a whole.
The pattie's salty and peppery flavor. The taste of the type of cheese that's being used. The hint of vinegar in the pickles. The sour flavor of the onion. The neutral watery/ leafy taste of the lettuce and tomatoes. Ect.
They're all separated and placed in a way that allows their qualities to unite. No one ingredient over powers the others.
And since the cheese being placed on the bottom. Runs the risk of not being able to taste it. I'm guessing that's what made people mad about Google's old burger emoji. But idrk.

My best guess for the ban on the new disability icon is because the character in said icon is hunching. I think the federation believes that makes the character either "too active for a disabled person" or "not disabled enough to be considered disabled", as the pose may suggest that the character is still able to move with its back freely, which is the opposite of "disabled" and may encourage people to pretend to be disabled in order to take advantage of areas restricted to disabled people (e.g. parking spaces).
Yeah it sounds kinda dumb, but it's the best I can think of. Sometimes restrictions and bans are placed for stupid reasons.
