It's great that you didn't just "musical montage with titles" over the actual software installation & setup process. It gives a more realistic idea of what it takes for a "Rasp pi novice" to get the device up and running & get it functioning as desired. Well done.
Very nice video. The beauty of the Pi is the community around it. It's the only SBC that really caters to the novice. The creativity that enables things like the PiStorm is amazing. I have a couple of 3A+ boards laying around and I'm about to delve into the PiStorm. I thank you for a very interesting and informative video without a lot of crappy music.
@@CRG Thanks. I'm not worried though. I replaced a TSOP-48 flash in a Samsung TV some years ago. It took me a few tries with cheap magnifying glasses and a bad soldering tip, but it works fine to this day. In the end, we'll all sooner or later have to acquire the skills to work with those tiny components anyway. Tools have never been cheaper, and tutorials have never been more plentiful. So why not start now...
@@Shmbler Fairly simple build really. Not many components and well within being doable under cheap magnification goggles even for old men. You don't sound like you will have any trouble, it's the same with all surface mount, pretty much solders itself if you have good flux.
As somebody who hasn't messed with an Amiga in years, just casually observing from outside. . . This is an incredibly cool hack, and I'm very impressed that somebody made it work. Mad science at its best. On the other hand, from a purely practical standpoint, it's nuts. You could take something like a Mini PC with Ubuntu, install Amiga emulation on it, and it would run Amiga software faster, and it would also run its own native software, which would also perform much better than a stand-alone Pi.
I think the reason why the Pi was chosen to be used is that they are quite ubiquitous with a standard GPIO port and have a consistent form factor. Part of the reason why PiStorm was created was to cut scalpers off at the heels by offering a cheap accessible CPU replacement.
Thanks, The PiStorm has moved on a fair bit since I made this video and even since I made the update video. I do need to revisit it again at some point, really want to try out the EMU68 core.
This was a great video, many thanks indeed. What you need is to use NewMode or ModePro to promote all the non-RTG screens to the RTG system (although expect varied results)!!! All of the Workbench reliant software will promote automatically (like FinalWriter or Wordworth), but the mode promoters will allow you to choose the resolution you want them at. I think you should choose a 1080 P screenmode - it will blow you way!!
I've changed the screenmode to 720p and its amazing, so crystal clear I just stared at the screen last night admiring the high res workbench while listening to mods. I'll take a look at those apps and see if I can't get the likes of sysinfo so show up on RTG.
@@CRG it can take a bit of playing around with sysinfo to get the right display (or at least one that's useable) but it does work. You'll find the mode promotion apps on Aminet.
Love the pace of your videos, nice and chill without talking too fast, new subscriber! - Can I just ask do I need to use a soldering iron for the A500? I watched a video from Dan Wood and he didn't mention it. Is that because he was using a A500 and not a A500+?
The soldering iron is only needed if you get the board without the through hole stuff soldered on. That was part of the deal when I ordered mine but I know other people are selling them fully populated so it would be ready to go. Thanks for subscribing and thank you for the kind words.
Pistorm is the amiga accelerator for everybody, in my opinion, nothing wrong with the other accelerators but Pistorm is going to get better, and better, might even do enough with a Pi Zero. It'll hopefully be a cheap upgrade for all Amiga owners and if they want to go faster they can. Until the PiStorm arrived you were looking at £120+
I couldn't agree more and we are just seeing the start of what's possible. The new Pi4 version thats being worked on gives a massive, massive speed boost. It has been tested with a Pi Zero but results are similar to a stock 68k, marginally faster. But if that's all you need then it could maybe be seen as a means to replace a dead chip, that said though there may never be official support for it.
I would love to find some tidy solutions as to how to route an hdmi cable from the pistorm output the best nondestructive i found is that ribbon cable topmounted hdmi. but surely there has to be some zorro expansion cover replacements with usb as well? Haven't run into any..I'm a leftie so would be a good solution for modern mouse
@@CRG Interesting. The Pi probably has md5 installed so you could see if the checksum is identical for the two files, which would mean they are definitely the same. Try the command inside the folder/directory that contains both files: md5sum pigfx020.card pigfx030.card
Unbeknownst to me up till this point exept the Amiga is great i didn't know my life would seem better with the combination of a accent so thicc is become so, so slick while talking "aboot" miggy stuff. So you sir, ASMR, right now... yes :D haha great stuff tho
great video.. i'm going to try mine with my Rgb2Hdmi so not sure if i'll be needing the Rtg option , also switching modes still has bugs i read on the Github for Rtg
I haven't had any problems so far with the rtg although not done much rtg other than workbench. I do have my second rgb2hdmi board but I'm holding out for an option to feed the signal via the pi3a on the storm.
I’ve been installing basic workbench 3.1 from Amiga Forever. It looks rather dull compared to yours. I’m wondering if I’m missing a trick or a version of the OS? 🤪
I used 3.9 on this but added the custom wallpaper to the desktop. Its really easy to do, I've got a video on it :). Its an older video so I can only apologise for the overbearing music throughout it, should you decide to watch it that is.
This video it a little out of date now. Most people are using EMU68 and its a lot easier to setup. You can more or less just download a pre-setup image. Look for coffin.
I just created the pi service file and followed the commands as per the github. Copy and paste the content of this - github.com/beeanyew/pistorm/blob/wip-crap/boot_scripts/pistorm.service into notepad and save it as pistorm.service then you just need to follow the instructions at the top of this page github.com/beeanyew/pistorm/tree/wip-crap/boot_scripts.
I used an adf disk image. That thing I plugged it into is a gotek floppy drive emulator. Reads the adf disk images from USB as if they were real disks.
There's certainly software in the works for the pistorm and the ST. I have to admit I don't know much about the atari machines but if you joined the discord there is an atari room in there full of discussion.

Nicely done. I like that it's done from a first time approach and not massively rehearsed. Honest approach.
Looks like I'm not years late to the party this time. My bare PCBs should arrive tomorrow. It's going to be an exciting build ;-)
Good luck with the surface mount stuff. Some very fine pitch on there. Well worth it though, the pistorm is a fantastic bit of kit.

Get ScummVM-RTG for the Amiga and then install all those 256-colour Lucasarts and Sierra games! Might need to change CPU type to 040 though.
Only difference in changing the CPU type makes is emulating the MMU. Does SCUMMVM-RTG need the MMU?

I, am a massive fan 500&600 amiga awesome in the day. I would say they where before 386ibm...
The 386 chip came before the A500 although in terms of price the A500 was way more accessible plus it better sound and generally better graphics.
FFPlay would be a nice addition --- to play MP4 etc...
